A colony of rabbits has been developed at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston that is resistant to dietary-induced hypercholesterolemia. The liver of resistant rabbits had higher levels of ($\sp{125}$I) $\beta$-VLDL binding and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMGCoA) reductase activity, but lower acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity than normal rabbits. Direct quantitation of intracellular cholesterol content of the liver revealed that the resistant rabbits had $<$10% of the intracellular free cholesterol present in normal rabbits. Fibroblasts isolated from normal and resistant rabbits exhibited differences in ($\sp{125}$I) LDL binding, HMGCoA reductase activity and ACAT activity that were similar to those found in the liver. No structural differences were found in the LDL receptor of normal and resistant fibroblasts that would account for the increased binding capacity of the resistant cells. The regulation of LDL receptor levels by exogenous oxygenated sterols was similar in normal and resistant fibroblasts. The regulation of LDL receptor binding capacity by LDL was attenuated in the resistant compared to normal fibroblasts, suggesting that the resistant fibroblasts have an alternate pathway for processing lipoprotein-derived cholesterol. Sterol-balance studies revealed that the cholesterol-fed resistant rabbits increased lithocholic acid excretion compared to the basal state, and had higher levels of deoxycholic acid excretion than cholesterol-fed normal rabbits. In addition, the specific activity and mRNA levels of cholesterol 7$\alpha$-hydroxylase (C7$\alpha$H) were higher in resistant rabbits than normal rabbits, suggesting that the increased bile acid excretion was due to an increase in bile acid synthesis. Increased clearance of cholesterol relieves the negative feedback inhibition cholesterol exerts on expression of the LDL receptor. The number of cell surface LDL receptors is then increased in resistant rabbits and allows rapid clearance of lipoproteins from the plasma compartment, thereby reducing plasma cholesterol levels. The low intracellular cholesterol level also relieves the negative feedback inhibition cholesterol exerts on HMGCoA reductase. Increased synthesis of cholesterol from acetate provides cells with cholesterol for bile acid synthesis and/or homeostasis. The activity of ACAT is then decreased due to the flux of cholesterol through the bile acid synthetic pathways. ^

This thesis is centered on applying molecular genetics to study pattern formation during animal development. More specifically, this thesis describes the functional studies of a LIM-homeodomain gene called lmx1b during murine embryogenesis. Lmx1b expression is restricted to the mid-hindbrain junction as well as to the dorsal mesenchyme of the limb, suggesting important functions during mid-hindbrain and limb development. To test these possibilities, lmx1b homozygous mutant mice were generated and their limb and CNS phenotypes examined. Lmx1b homozygous mutant mice exhibit a large reduction of mid-hindbrain structures, and that their limbs are symmetrical along the dorsal-ventral axis as the result of a dorsal to ventral transformation. Taken together, these studies define essential functions for lmx1b in mid-hindbrain patteming and in dorsal limb cell fate determination. However, the molecular mechanisms which accounts for these phenotypes are unknown, and whether lmx1b has same or distinctive functions during the mid-hindbrain and limb development is also unclear. ^ Recently, insight into molecular mechanisms of mid-hindbrain patterning and limb development has resulted from the identification of several factors with restricted expression patterns within these regions. These include the secreted factors wnt-1, fgf-8, wnt-7a and the transcription factors pax-2, and en-1. Targeted disruption of any of these genes in mice suggests that these genes might be involved in similar regulatory pathways. Analysis of the expression of these genes in lmx1b mutants demonstrates that lmxlb is not required for the initiation, but is required to maintain their expression at the mid-hindbrain junction. Thus, lmxlb is not required for specifying mid-hindbrain cell fates, rather, it functions to ensure the establishment or maintenance of a proper organizing center at the mid-hindbrain junction. Interestingly, lmxlb functions cell non-autonomously in chimera analysis, which indicates that lmx1b might regulate the expression of secreted factors such as wnt-1 and/or fgf-8 in the organizing center. In contrast, lmx1b functions cell autonomously in the dorsal limb to govern dorsal ventral limb development and its expression is regulated by with wnt-7a and en-1. However, single and double mutant analysis suggest that all three genes have partially overlapping functions as well as independent functions. The results point toward a complicated network of cross-talks among all three limb axes. ^

En la Argentina se institucionalizó la figura del perito médico con la creación del Cuerpo Médico de Policía por decreto del Gobernador de la Provincia de Buenos Aires Gral. Martín Rodríguez en 1822, apareciendo en los expedientes judiciales con la designación de "Médico de Policía" o "Médico de Tribunales". Sin embargo la primera definición de este auxiliar de la justicia como "experto en arte o cosa" es más antigua, apareciendo en la legislación base de nuestro sistema penal: las Leyes de Partidas (especialmente la 3a y la 7a). En este capítulo analizaremos la actuación de este agente en los casos de violencia sexual, mostrando la importancia vital de su función para la determinación misma de su existencia como delito punible por la ley, veremos como se mezclan a un tiempo las consideraciones científicas, sociales e incluso personales en sus informes pretendida y idealmente neutrales. Además buscaremos resaltar cuando sea posible el nivel de imbricación de los saberes médicos y legales en los abogados y médicos de esta época caracterizada por la profesionalización de ambas ramas.

Als man nach dem ersten Weltkrieg im verkleinerten Deutschland nach der Möglichkeit von Neulandgewinnung suchte, dachte man auch an eineTrockenlegung der ostpreußischen Haffe. Aus diesem Anlaß wurden umfangreiche Bohrungen ausgeführt, um ein möglichst genaues Bild vom Untergrunde der Haffe zu bekommen. Auf Veranlassung der Preußischen Geologischen Landesanstalt wurde ich mit der Untersuchung der Diatomeen in den Bohrproben beauftragt. Die Arbeit wurde 1934 begonnen und Ende 1937 wurde der letzte Arbeitsbericht abgeliefert. Die beabsichtigte Veröffentlichung ist bisher unterblieben, weil die Druckvorlagen später verloren gegangen sind. Seitdem sind über die Haffuntersuchungen mehrere Teilergebnisse veröffentlicht worden, von denen hier schon wegen der Terminologie die pollenanalytischen Arbeiten von L. HEIN (1941) und HUGO GROSS (1941) erwähnt seien, auf die im Abschnitt Il 2e näher eingegangen wird. Bei der geologischen Auswertung war Zurückhaltung geboten; denn es wäre gewagt, allein aus der Perspektive der Diatomeenforschung endgültige Aussagen machen zu wollen. Darum habe ich mich bemüht, das Material so weit aufzuschließen, daß es Geologen später auch bei veränderter Fragestellung auswerten können. "Die Theorien wechseln, aber die Tatsachen bleiben." Der Initiative des Herrn Prof. Dr. K. GRIPP und der finanziellen Hilfe der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft ist es zu verdanken, daß die vorliegende Arbeit im Druck erscheinen kann. Zusammenfassung 1. Nur in den alluvialen Schichten des Kurischen Haffs wurden Diatomeen gefunden. 2. Die Diatomeenflora des Kurischen Haffs besteht zur Hauptsache aus Süßwasserformen. 3. Salzwasserformen finden sich in allen Schichten verstreut unter der Süßwasserflora. Wenn sie auch nach Zahl der Arten in manchen Proben einen erheblichen Prozentsatz der Flora ausmachen, so ist doch die Zahl der Individuen stets so gering, daß man nirgends von einer Brackwasserflora sprechen kann. 4. Die Süßwasserflora besteht in den unteren Schichten vorwiegend aus Grundformen; und zwar machen die epiphytischen Bewohner flacher Sumpfgewässer einen großen Teil der Flora aus. 5. In einzelnen Bohrungen kommt in den untersten alluvialen Schichten eine Grundflora mit zahlreichen Mastogloien vor. Dies sind die ältesten diatomeenführenden Schichten, entstanden in isolierten Sumpfgewässern. 6. Die übrigen Schichten mit überwiegender Grundflora sind vermutlich Ablagerungen der Ancyluszeit. 7. Die oberen Schichten, in denen die Planktondiatomeen überwiegen, dürften größtenteils der Litorina-Transgressionszeit angehören, jedoch ist der Transgressions-Kontakt nicht klar zu erkennen. 8. Das Ende der Litorinazeit ist noch weniger erkennbar, da eine grundsätzliche Veränderung der Flora nach oben nicht zu beobachten ist. 9. Die ostbaltischen Charakterformen sind in allen Schichten vertreten.

The NA64-Mesozooplankton dataset contains biogeochemistry and mesozooplankton data collected in a series of 9 cruises in the Northern Adriatic completed from January 1965 to September 1965 monthly, and December 1965. Biogeochemistry sampling was undertaken using 5L Nansen bottles fired at 0m, 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m and/or bottom depths. The dataset includes 709 samples analysed for nitrate, phosphate, temperature, salinity and density. Mesozooplankton sampling was undertaken at the same locations as for biogeochemistry, using two different net (Hensen non-closing and Appstein closing net). The dataset includes 146 samples analysed for mesozooplankton composition (at higher taxonomic level), abundance and volume settlement. After sedimentation and volume measurement, the fish larva and fish eggs were extracted from samples (egss of Engraulis encrasicholus were determined). Chaetognaths were partly isolated. Identification at higher taxonomic level of zooplankters was completed. Taxonomic identification was done at Smithonian Mediterranean Centre in Salambo. Previous pollen analytical studies on sediments from the pleistocene lake basin at Samerberg, situated on the northern edge of the Bavarian Alps (47°45' N, 12°12' E, 607 m a.s.l.) had been performed on samples taken from cores and exposures close to the southern shore of the former lake. After geoelectric and refraction-seismic measurements had shown that the lake basin had been much deeper in its northern part, another core was taken where maximum depth could be expected. The corer penetrated three moraines, two of them lying above pollen-bearing sediments, and one below them, and reached the hard rock (Kössener Kalk) at a depth of 93 m. Two forest phases could be identified by pollen analysis. The pollen record begins abruptly in a forest phase at the end of a spruce-dominated period when fir started to spread (DA 1, DA = pollen zone). Following this, Abies (fir) was the main tree species at Samerberg, Picea being second, and deciduous trees were almost non-existent. First box (Buxus) was of major importance in the fir forests (DA 2), but later on beech (Fagus) and wing-nut (Pterocarya) spread (DA 3). Finally this forest gave way to a spruce forest with pine (DA 4). The beginning and the end of this interglacial cycle are not recorded. Its vegetational development is different from the eemian one known from earlier studies at Samerberg. It is characterized by the occurrence of Abies together with Buxus, Pterocarya and Fagus. A similar association of woody species is known only from the Holsteinian age deposits in an area ranging from England to Poland, though at no other place these species were such important constituents of the vegetation as at Samerberg. Therefore zone 1 to 4 are attributed to the Holsteinian interglacial period. The younger forest phase, separated from the interglacial by a stadial with open vegetation (DA 5), seems to be completely represented, though its sediments are disturbed, apparently by sliding which caused repetition of same-age-sediments in the core (DA 7a, b, c) The vegetational development is simple. A juniper phase (DA 6) was followed by reforestation with spruce, accompanied by some fir (DA 7, 9). Finally pine became the dominant species (DA 9). The simple vegetational development of this younger forest phase does not allow a safe correlation with one of the known pre-eemian interstadials, but for stratigraphical reasons it can be related best to the Dömnitz-interglacial, which among others is also known as Wacken- or Holstein-II-interglacial. Possibly another phase of reforestation is indicated at the end of the following stadial (DA 10). But due to an erosional unconformity nothing than the rise of the juniper curve can be stated. It was only after this sequence of forest phases and periods with open vegetation that glaciers reached the Samerberg area again.
