A new bimetallic cluster complex with the formula [(Mn(phen)(2))(2)V4O12].1/2 H2O has been synthesized through hydrothermal reaction of vanadate staring material with manganese cation in the presence of nitrogen donor chelating ligand and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR UV-vis, ESR spectrum and thermal analysis. The compound crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 18.475(4) Angstrom, b = 11.473(2) Angstrom, c = 23.667(5) Angstrom, beta = 97.76(3)degrees, V = 4971(2) Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. The structure of [{Mn(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12].1/2 H2O is composed of a discrete V4O124- cluster covalently attached to two [Mn(phen)(2)](2+) fragments.

A new bimetallic cluster complex with the formula [{Co(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12](H2O)-H-. was synthesized from the hydrothermal reaction of V2O5, H2C2O4, Co(NO3)(2), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), (C4H9)(4)NOH and water. The compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic system with space group Pbcn and unit cell parameters a = 19.106(3) Angstrom, b = 15.250(3) Angstrom, c = 16.321(2) Angstrom, V = 4755.4(13) Angstrom(3), Z = 4 and R = 0.0318. The bimetallic cluster complex [{Co(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12](H2O)-H-. is composed of a discrete V4O124- cluster eovalently attached to two [Co(phen)(2)](2+) fragments and the discrete hexanuclear bimetallic clusters of [{Co(phen)(2)}(V4O12)-V-2](H2O)-H-. are further extended into interesting three-dimensional supermolecular arrays via pi-pi stacking interactions of phen groups. Other characterizations by elemental analysis, IR, and thermal analysis are also described.

Rare earth complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, phen: 1.10-phenanthroline) hits been incorporated into unmodified MCM-41 and modified MCM-41s by aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or N-[(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine(TEPED). Thus, the assemblies of unmodified or modified MCM-41s with rare earth (RE) complex have been obtained. XRD spectra. NMR spectra. diffuse reflectance spectra. and the luminescence spectra were used to characterize the pure RE complex and the corresponding assemblies. The assemblies have better luminescence properties under UV irradiation. and their fluorescence lifetimes on the excited state are longer than that of the corresponding pure complex. The possible mechanisms are also discussed in the context.

By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of Gd(acac)(3) (acac: acetylacetone) and Gd(TFacac)(3) (TFacac: 1, 1, 1-trifluoro-acetylacetone), the effect of fluorine replacing of hydrogen was discussed. It can lower the triplet state energy of acac and make it more suitable to the D-5(1) energy state of europium. Organic electroluminescent (OEL) devices with corresponding europium complexes as emissive layers were fabricated. A triple laver-type device with a structure of glass substrate/indium-tin oxide (ITO)/poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/PVK:Eu(TFacac)(3)phen:2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD)/PBD/Al exhibits bright red luminescence upon applying dc voltage, The device has the properties of a diode and the current-bias voltage line was obtained.

(C5H9C5H4)(3)NdBrLi(THF)(4)(1)(C5H9=cyclopentyl) was obtained from the reaction of NdCl3 with C5H9C5H4Na and LiBr (Nd:Na:Li=1:2:1 molar ratio) in THE X-ray crystallography showed that the ten-coordinated neodymium atom is bonded to three cyclopentylcyclopentadienyl(eta(5)) rings and a single bromine atom bridging a lithium which is bonded to three THF molecules. Complex 1 is triclinic, P1 space group with unit dimensions of a= 12.048(2), b= 13.498(3), c= 13.831(3)Angstrom, a = 104.16(3), beta = 104.07(3), gamma =95.96(3)degrees, V=2083.3(7)Angstrom(3), Z=2, D-c=1.35Mg/m(3) and F(000)=874. (C5H9C5H4)(3)SmTHF (2) was synthesized by reaction of anhydrous SmCl3 with C5H9C5H4Na at a molar ratio of 1:3. The structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. The ten-coordinated samarium atom is bonded to three cycloperrtylcyclopentadienyl rings and one oxygen of THF molecule to form a pseudo-tetrahedron. Complex 2 is orthorhombic, Fdd2 space group with unit cell dimensions of a =28.175(5)Angstrom, b =46.24(2) Angstrom, c =9.167(4) Angstrom(3), V=11943(8)Angstrom(3), Z= 16, D-c = 1.38Mg/m(3) and F(000)=5136.

A charge transfer salt, (Bu4N)(4) (C5H6)[(HSiMo11MoO40)-Mo-VI-O-V] has been photochemically synthesized from (Bu4N)(4)SiMo12O40 and 1.3-cyclopentadiene and Characterized, by elemental analysis, IR spectra, solid diffusion reflectance electronic spectra, CV and ESR. The X-ray crystal structure revealed that the title complex crystal data are as follows: triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 14.347(3), b = 14.423(3), c = 27.158(5) Angstrom, alpha = 96.90(3), beta = 104.18(3), gamma = 98.20(3)degrees, V = 5322(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 2, M-r = 2855. 30, D-c = 1.782g.cm(-3), F(000) = 2860, R = 0.0719, wR = 0.198. The title compound is composed of 1.3-cyclopentadiene, four tetrabutylammonium and [(SiMo11MoO40)-Mo-VI-O-V](4-) anion.

Rare earth complex Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 was introduced into a SiO2-PEG-400 hybrid material by a sol-ger method. The result indicated that Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) could associate with Eu3+ and change the surroundings of Eu3+ in the hybrid material, greatly improving the decay time. Transparent SiO2-PEG400 hybrid doped with a very small amount of Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 has better mechanical properties and can retain excellent luminescence properties of the rare earth complex. The rare earth complex Eu(TTA)(3) was successfully encapsulated into MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve by the addition of the complex into the sol-gel mixture for the synthesis of MCM-41 mesoporous material under microwave radiation. The as-synthesized MCM-41-hosted Eu(TTA)(3) mesophase was confirmed to possess hexagonally ordered mesostructure and a uniform crystal. size of about 30 nm with XRD and HRTEM techniques. Moreover, the IR spectrum, photoluminescence effect and fluorescence lifetime of the Eu(TTA)(3)/MCM-41 hybrid were also studied. An increase in Stokes' shift and no change in luminescence lifetime were observed to the resultant mesophase in comparison with Eu(TTA)(3) in ethanol solution.

A new carboxylic acid ligand (o-amino-4-hexadecane benzoic acid, AHBA) and a corresponding terbium complex (Tb(AHB)(3)) were synthesized and characterized. A multilayer electroluminescent device with poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), 2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) and the terbium complex as emissive layer was fabricated: glass substrate/ITO/PPV/PVK:-To(AHB)(3):PBD/Alq(3)/Al. The photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) spectra were discussed. This EL cell exhibited characteristic emission of terbium ions with a maximum luminance of 35 cd/m(2) at 20 V. Electroluminescent (EL) devices based on a soluble complex Tb(MDP)(3) [Tris-(monododecyl phthalate)Terbium] doped with poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), (2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) (PBD) were fabricated. The device structures of ITO/PVK/PVK:PBD:Tb(MDp)(2)/Aiq(3)/Al and ITO/PVK:PBD:Tb(MDP)(3)/Alq(3)/Al were employed. The Tb(MDP), as emissive layer was spin-coated. The encapsulation of a rare earth (RE) complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen in modified S1-MCM-41 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane is reported for the first time. The luminescence intensity of the RE complex in the modified Si-MCM-41 is about 9 times as strong as in unmodified Si-MCM-41 and the luminescence of the RE complex in the modified SI-MCM-41 has good color purity.

Function of chloride and effect of various alkylaluminiums, C1/A1 molar ratio, solvents on cyclization in situ of isoprene polymerization catalyzed by Nd-Al bimetallic complex were studied. The structure of cyclized products was characterized by means of IR and H-1 NMR, The results indicated that in the course of isoprene polymerization with rare earth catalytic system, the function of alkylchloride introduced is terminating cis-polymerization and generating cationic species with alkyl-aluminums to initiate cyclization in situ. Soluble cyclized polyisoprene was obtained with fragments of cyclopolyisoprene.

Layered compound zirconium bis(monohydrogenphosphate)(alpha-ZrP) intercalated with rare earth complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen was prepared. The pre-intercalation of p-methoxyaniline into alpha-ZrP makes the interlayer separation large enough to exchange PMA with europium complex, thus, the luminescent assembly was prepared. This was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectra and elemental analysis. The fluorescence spectra and lifetime of the assembly were also presented.

The solubility of [Tris-(acetylsalicylate)-terbium] [Tb(AS)(3)] is improved to a greater extent than [Tris-(salicylate)-terbium] [Tb(Sal)(3)] following introduction of a flexible acetyl group. Th3+ binds with acetylsalicylate in solution at low pH value and the resultant Tb(AS)(3) has good solubility in chloroform. A Green EL device with the structure ITO/PVK/PVB:PBD: Tb(AS)(3)/ PBD/Al has been fabricated based on soluble Tb(AS)(3), in which Tb(AS)(3) was first used as an emissive center doped with PVK and PBD. The hole-transporting layer and the emissive layer were formed by spin coating. The device exhibited a highly pure characteristic green light of Tb3+. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Electroluminescent devices using a ternary europium complex Eu(DBM)(3)(hhpy)(2) (dibenzoylmethane, DBM; hexahydro pyridine, hhpy) as an emitting layer, poly(vinyl-carbazole) (PVK) as a hole-transporting material and tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) as an electron-transporting material have been fabricated. When only using Eu(DBM)(3)(hhpy)(2) as the emitting layer, luminance of 2.52 cd/m(2) with pure Eu3+ EL emissions from devices is achieved. Introducing a hole transporting material PVK and an electron transporting material 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxidiazole (PBD) in the emitting layer, luminance of 100cd/m(2) is achieved, and the eletroluminescence efficiency is enhanced by about two orders of magnitude.
