HfG was founded in 1953 with the aim of transforming, through design, a devastated postwar society. By combining academic and polytechnic training, it endeavored to design all kinds of objects through a rational perspective. However, controversy soon emerged amongst the faculty. This research seeks to review not only the motivation of the architect Max Bill in defending the Preliminary Course of esthetical training, but also to explain the reasons that led to the unaesthetic reactions of the theorist Tomas Maldonado and the designer Otl Aicher, who successively prioritised scientific methodology and project praxis as alternatives to Max Bill's idealist pedagogy.

ABSTRACT This thesis is focused on the identification, analysis and relationship study of factors which may benefit or hinder the successful deployment of innovation, from a marketing-sales interface perspective. Considering the non-existent investigation dedicated to the study of new products launches into markets in which Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies’ subsidiaries operate, it is that this investigation has been carried out. FMCG companies rely on innovation as their key process for a competitive growth on a medium and long term basis. Nowadays, the life-cycle of products is getting shorter as a result of new technological and scientific development, having impact on consumer behavior, and therefore companies are forced to dedicating more resources to the development of new products, reengineering and innovation programs (Mundra, Gulati and Gupta, 2013). However, in spite of the investment increase, the innovation success rates have been reported to be lower than 25% (Evanschitzky, Eisend, Calantone y Jiang, 2012). Increasing success rates on innovation processes has been considered as a key element on the survival and competitiveness of companies, outperforming competitors and developing new business models. Despite new studies which try to comprehend the process of new products launch, a prototype of innovation management has not yet been identified (Gupta et al, 2007). Emphasizing on success factors, authors Keupp, Palmié and Gassman (2012) recognize that successful innovation does not solely depend on innovation processes’ selection strategy, but it is also based on the way in which these are implemented (Klein and Sorra, 1996; Repenning, 2002; Keupp, Palmié y Gassmann, 2012). While analyzing the implementation of projects for new products releases on massive consumption companies, the two departments in charge of taking this forward are marketing and sales, by focusing on communication strategies with consumers and clients respectively (Ernst, Hoyer y Rubsaamen, 2010). This means that having success on innovation implementation requires an effective management of inter-functional relationship among marketing and sales (Ernst, Hoyer y Rubsaamen, 2010; Hughes, Le Bon y Malshe, 2012). In spite of the importance on the integration between marketing and sales on the conceptualization and implementation of innovation, this subject has not been studied in depth (Hughes, Le Bon y Malshe, 2012; Keupp, Palmié y Gassmann, 2012). In multinational companies, previous research has confirmed that the performance of their subsidiaries determine the competitive success of the company on a global scale. The challenge of said subsidiaries is to conjugate the global innovation development and communication with the local consumer and market behavior. Therefore, this empirical study aims to respond to the academic and management question of how to improve the success rates of new product launches into MNE subsidiary’ markets, from a marketing-sales relationship perspective. Particularly, this investigation analyses how the formalization of products and communication mechanisms affect interpersonal trust and marketing-sales interface effectiveness and also on how these factors affect the overall planning of the implementation of innovation. The determination of which factors build the hypothesis of the innovation execution process was taken forward through an extensive research on the extant literature on functional interfaces and innovation processes. More than 50 items were selected which were in turn validated by marketing and sales referents on Uruguay and Argentina through in depth interviews. Based on the identified factors, two theoretical models were proposed: (1) Relative to the influence that interpersonal trust dimensions have on inter functional linkages effectiveness and how organizational mechanisms such as frequency and quality of communication between departments affect trust and their relationship. (2) Relative to the integrated planning and innovation implementation dimensions. Marketing and sales department use formal process thus allowing inter-personal trust, which affects positively their relationship and also enables the development of integrated planning between them. The study was performed within a massive consumption company which is part of the “Global 500” (Fortune, 2015), with subsidiaries all over the world and more than 25 participant brands in 15 categories, having implemented over 150 innovation projects in the year under study. The analyzed subsidiary group has been awarded worldwide for their performance in competitive growth and their high contribution to the total growth. The model being analyzed in this thesis was implemented throughout Latin America, representing a remarkable case of innovation implementation excellence for subsidiaries of multinational companies. Data recollection was carried out through a structured and confidential questionnaire, sent to the universe of marketing-sales directors and managers’ database available with a high level of responsiveness of 70%, resulting in 152 valid cases. Data exploration involved a descriptive analysis, followed by a reliability estimation and an exploratory factorial analysis carried out through SPSS v.20. Confirmatory factorial analysis and path analysis (to examine relations between the different study factors) were studied using “R” software (Package 2.15.1., R Core Team, 2012) (Fox, 2006). Finally, in depth interviews were carried out to several marketing and sales managers in each of the six countries so as to further confirm the hypothesis and their relations. The models results prove that communication frequency has a positive impact on the quality of the same, which in turn has direct effects on the marketing-sales relations. Additionally, communication quality has an impact on the cognitive trust, which also relates not only to affective trust, but also to the relation between both areas. This means that in order to improve the implementation of innovation, managers should strive to enforce marketing-sales relations, facilitating the interpersonal trust construction (firstly cognitive, followed by affective trust), increasing the communication frequency, and therefore nurturing the communication quality among both areas. Through the second model, the results confirm the importance of creating effective relationships between sales and marketing to facilitate planning integrated new product implementations. While formalized new product development processes provide opportunities for sales and marketing to communicate, this does not directly influence the planning of integrated new product implementations. By using these formal opportunities to communicate to create information quality, it is possible to improve sales and marketing’s ability to integrate information during the planning process. Further, communication quality creates inter-personal trust in the other party’s competences (cognitive-based trust), leading to affect-based trust. Affect-based inter-personal trust, not only to improve the overall effectiveness of the sales and marketing relationship, but also helps in planning integrated new product implementations. This study contributes to the understanding of factors which enterprises can use to improve the inter-functional relations between marketing and sales, and the implementation of innovation in FMCG companies. The contribution of this investigation can be measured in two ways: enrichment of management and contribution to the academic area. From a business perspective, it provides massive consumption businesses leaders with knowledge on which factors affect innovation implementation, which results on mid and long-term success for the company. From an academic point of view, it provides knowledge on a prototype of successful innovation implementation management based on the marketing-sales interface effectiveness through a case study in the FMCG consumption market. Last but not least, it incorporates for the first time an empiric study on emerging geographies capable of recovery post a deep economic crisis through successful innovation implementation on their markets.

ABSTRACT The question of mass housing in the USSR during the Twenties was marked by the drive to define and establish a socialist state in political, social and economic terms. In this context of instability and change, a group of architects gathered together under the Association of Contemporary Architects, OSA, led by Moisey Ginzburg, to address the issue of mass housing, thus taking on the responsibility and being committed to creating a new social order. Their quest not only involved solving the problem of housing for workers in large Soviet cities, but also redefining this solution as an appropriate framework for a society undergoing dramatic changes which, at the same time and in a dialectical process, would contribute to the creation of this new society. The solution provided by OSA transcended Modern standards of immediate design set by the West and was the result of a research process that would last five years. This work culminated in the construction of Narkomfin House and its self-criticism, developed in three successive approaches. The first was conceptual, being formalized in the Comradely Competition held by the OSA in 1926 and taking into account the participation of citizens and independent experts. The second approach to the problem of mass housing involved research developed by the Typification Section of the Stroykom, this time under scientific and methodological premises. Finally, the conclusions reached were put in practice with the construction of six Experimental Transitional Houses of which the most notable is Narkomfin House. This third empirical approach has traditionally been examined by scholars in isolation. However, its study must necessarily transcend the genius of the author-creator and involve the research process of which it is part. In this thesis, Narkomfin House is presented not only as the paradigm in Soviet housing avant-garde we are used to, but also as a prototype reflecting the principles and conclusions reached in the preceding conceptual and scientific approaches. Only from this point of view does Ginzburg’s understanding of his own building as a proactive and non-imposed environment make sense: a project conceived as a transition tool towards a more advanced society.

----------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY--------------------------------------------------- The history of architecture is measured - in part - by the evolution of fashion, periods and styles of religious architecture. In the emergence of the new interfaith university chapel of the 1950s in North America, the chapel of MIT, named after its inauguration as "Kresge Chapel" in honor of its benefactor, was the best example of a prototype, in this time so marked by the emergence of new postwar consciousnesses. The thesis focuses its research on this chapel; how it came about in response to the need to reconcile formal scientific and technological education with religious and humanist training for the program imposed as an extension of the campus of MIT in the university district of Cambridge, Boston Massachusetts, around two main projected buildings : Chapel and auditorium. From research work has been obtained the documentary information necessary to know how it evolved from the first sketches to its construction. Its creation as a necessity of the university society was not at all spontaneous, being halfway between the Scandinavian influence - German and the American Lutheran tradition of neoclassical churches, the heirs to the "Akron Plan". The academic and professional training directed by his father, Eliel Saarinen, together with the travels of the architect, a "genetic" heritage with this external prototype for the emerging "international style", and help to understand the complex dimension of what the chapel is capable of representing. The chapel is an emotional refuge of light and is a remarkable turning point in the recovery of such focused renewed and evolved, along with the double lumen resource - gimmicky, vertical to the altar and lower horizontal, distributed from the undulating perimeter inside, the example is shown to promote a certain sensitivity to the new forms of "religion" but vague religious profile emerging in the America of the 50s. From the syncretism as a mechanism and main "modus operandi" of the project, FAITH versus REASON appears as permanent dualism in all phases of the project from a process of finding the harmony of both and for each of them. With the study of the prototypical model of MIT, we seek the "pattern" used by the architect in his projection of "new church" adapted to the cultural and religious diversity and new and different humanist sensitivities for the project. The development sheds enough light to understand the architectural patterns of the chapel, making it the perfect and harmonic communion named opposites on the campus of MIT. Along the way, furthermore, the research sheds light and order on the phases of the project through the contribution, collection, sorting and order of data, dates and graphic documents, today scattered and confusingly published, due to inexistence of a deep and comprehensive study like this work is meant to be, in the context of such a seminal work in the history of modern architecture. The final pattern will demonstrate the syncretic artifice of each of the parts - each in itself and all together - forming the "Ima Summis" of the chapel; the result of the project action deducted from its deciphered genetic series. Being the SYNCRETIC, the main attribute of the built matter, passing from the mystical to the scientific, from the intuitive to the reasoned and always with the vehicle of architecture as the representation of the ineffable. As for the structure of the thesis, the development starts from an introduction in which the intentions are declared and the context of that which is investigated is described, in terms of the main hypothesis announced in the subtitle of the thesis. Faced with previous considerations of the chapel and the research itself, the principal hypothesis is expressed and explained, along with other secondary objectives. To conclude the introduction, the method followed is described as a strategy and the structuring of the document is justified for the compression of this work towards its conclusions. It is in the first chapter of the thesis, the C1, where the main body of the work is initiated through the historiographical account of the situation and context prior to the chapel as antecedents. A second chapter, C2, addresses the study of the development of the project and of the work and construction of the chapel, based on the necessary documentary evidence. To this end, the analysis begins with the description of the place, the commission and the program, moving on to analyze in detail the various proposals of each phase. What is projected, how it evolved and through what phases passed the project to, among other questions, understand the change in style between the phase of influence of Mies through the projected chapel in the ITT of Chicago chapel (called in this work as "miesian" influences or models) and the reunion with the modus of making initiated by his father Eliel, through a model equally at once of Scandinavian-German heritage and of the American-Lutheran tradition, (referred to in this work as "saarinian" inheritance or models). In the third chapter, C3, we study and analyze the most notable elements in which are found those particularities referred to as "genetic" in each of the principal parts, (see above C3.1.1... - C3.1.8), where these influences - sometimes synergies - are traced, helping to justify and form a classification based on four of those principals (see above C3.2), from which, at the end of this chapter may be discerned a matrix pattern, that of the chapel itself (see above. C3.3.), based on concurrent architectural orders. Once the necessary information and order is obtained, we come to the decisive point in the fourth chapter, C4, where the syncretic capacity of the chapel in response to the main hypothesis indicated in the subtitle of the thesis is justified. For this, the chapter beings with the focus and context of the terms "syncretism" and "syncretic", providing justification for their use for this research, going on to assert that the chapel is syncretic from the sum of two fundamental aspects: the first corresponds to the interfaith and non-denominational capacities of the chapel, its ability to transcend both situations and be recognizable by both the religious and the scientific. The second corresponds to the sum of the different syncretic parts, each in themselves, capable of making together a syncretic building with the opposite. Once discerned the keys to the syncretic and epic in the chapel and despite its dual character both SACRED and PROFANE, a comparatison positions the chapel as being unique among interfaith examples built in the 1950s, without being repeated in the same way and with the same result over time or in any other university or centre of technology. So, the exhibition of this work ends with the last chapter, C5, in which from that comparison a number of issues come together and to distance themselves from MIT and bear out the initial proposition, concluding that the hypothesis and its pattern, the pattern of the syncretic which models the "modus operandi" of the architect to contain the ineffable. The research closes ranks around four conclusions for the four main chapters; C2, C3, C4, and C5 The chapel of MIT as a prototypical model is not repeated in time, or any other university and is positioned as the best prototype - a landmark of a new universitary religious architecture.

Abundant research has shown that poverty has negative influences on young child academic and psychosocial development, and unfortunately, disparities in school readiness between low and high income children can be seen as early the first year of life. The largest federal early care and education intervention for these vulnerable children is Early Head Start (EHS). To diminish these disparate child outcomes, EHS seeks to provide community based flexible programming for infants and toddlers and their families. Given how relatively recent these programs have been offered, little is known about the nuances of how EHS impacts infant and toddler language and psychosocial development. Using a framework of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) this paper had 5 goals: 1) to characterize the associations between domain specific and cumulative risk and child outcomes 2) to validate and explore these risk-outcome associations separately for Children of Hispanic immigrants (COHIs), 3) to explore relationships among family characteristics, multiple environmental factors, and dosage patterns in different EHS program types, 4) to examine the relationship between EHS dosage and child outcomes, and 5) to examine how EHS compliance impacts child internalizing and externalizing behaviors and emerging language abilities. Results of the current study showed that risks were differentially related to child outcomes. Poor maternal mental health was related to child internalizing and externalizing behaviors, but not related to emerging child language skills. Although child language skills were not related to maternal mental health, they were related to economic hardship. Additionally, parent level Spanish use and heritage orientation were associated with positive child outcomes. Results also showed that these relationships differed when COHIs and children with native-born parents were examined separately. Further, unique patterns emerged for EHS program use, for example families who participated in home-based care were less likely to comply with EHS attendance requirements. These findings provide tangible suggestions for EHS stakeholders: namely, the need to develop effective programming that targets engagement for diverse families enrolled in EHS programs.

The Association of Research Libraries' 2012 publication, Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries, focuses heavily on the concept of transformative use within the fair use analysis. In some cases, the Association of Research Libraries advocates for using the entire work in an electronic format for course reserves. However, current approaches to electronic course reserves and fair use/transformative use arguments are not conducive to utilizing the Association of Research Libraries' recommendations. This article attempts to reframe the conversation by examining fair use in a broad context and the role of the class in the fair use analysis.

Characterization of sound absorbing materials is essential to predict its acoustic behaviour. The most commonly used models to do so consider the flow resistivity, porosity, and average fibre diameter as parameters to determine the acoustic impedance and sound absorbing coefficient. Besides direct experimental techniques, numerical approaches appear to be an alternative to estimate the material’s parameters. In this work an inverse numerical method to obtain some parameters of a fibrous material is presented. Using measurements of the normal incidence sound absorption coefficient and then using the model proposed by Voronina, subsequent application of basic minimization techniques allows one to obtain the porosity, average fibre diameter and density of a sound absorbing material. The numerical results agree fairly well with the experimental data.

Numerical modelling methodologies are important by their application to engineering and scientific problems, because there are processes where analytical mathematical expressions cannot be obtained to model them. When the only available information is a set of experimental values for the variables that determine the state of the system, the modelling problem is equivalent to determining the hyper-surface that best fits the data. This paper presents a methodology based on the Galerkin formulation of the finite elements method to obtain representations of relationships that are defined a priori, between a set of variables: y = z(x1, x2,...., xd). These representations are generated from the values of the variables in the experimental data. The approximation, piecewise, is an element of a Sobolev space and has derivatives defined in a general sense into this space. The using of this approach results in the need of inverting a linear system with a structure that allows a fast solver algorithm. The algorithm can be used in a variety of fields, being a multidisciplinary tool. The validity of the methodology is studied considering two real applications: a problem in hydrodynamics and a problem of engineering related to fluids, heat and transport in an energy generation plant. Also a test of the predictive capacity of the methodology is performed using a cross-validation method.

The diary and commonplace book of Perez Fobes is written on unlined pages in a notebook with a sewn binding at the top of the pages; only the edge of the original leather softcover remain. The volume holds handwritten entries added irregularly from August 23, 1759 until December 1760 while Fobes was a student at Harvard College. The topics range from the irreverent, to the mundane, to the theological and scientific. The notebook serves to chronicle both his daily activities, such as books he read, lectures he attended, and travel, as well as a place to note humorous sayings, transcribe book passages, or ponder religious ideas such as original sin. In the volume, Fobes devotes considerable space to the subject of astronomy, and drew a picture of the "The Solar System Serundum Coper[nici] with the Or[bit] of 5 Remarkable Comets." At the back of the book, on unattached pages is a short personal dictionary for the letters A-K kept by Fobes.
