Purpose – This paper aims to address the gaps in service recovery strategy assessment. An effective service recovery strategy that prevents customer defection after a service failure is a powerful managerial instrument. The literature to date does not present a comprehensive assessment of service recovery strategy. It also lacks a clear picture of the service recovery actions at managers’ disposal in case of failure and the effectiveness of individual strategies on customer outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – Based on service recovery theory, this paper proposes a formative index of service recovery strategy and empirically validates this measure using partial least-squares path modelling with survey data from 437 complainants in the telecommunications industry in Egypt. Findings – The CURE scale (CUstomer REcovery scale) presents evidence of reliability as well as convergent, discriminant and nomological validity. Findings also reveal that problem-solving, speed of response, effort, facilitation and apology are the actions that have an impact on the customer’s satisfaction with service recovery. Practical implications – This new formative index is of potential value in investigating links between strategy and customer evaluations of service by helping managers identify which actions contribute most to changes in the overall service recovery strategy as well as satisfaction with service recovery. Ultimately, the CURE scale facilitates the long-term planning of effective complaint management. Originality/value – This is the first study in the service marketing literature to propose a comprehensive assessment of service recovery strategy and clearly identify the service recovery actions that contribute most to changes in the overall service recovery strategy.

The solar wind is an extended ionized gas of very high electrical conductivity, and therefore drags some magnetic flux out of the Sun to fill the heliosphere with a weak interplanetary magnetic field(1,2). Magnetic reconnection-the merging of oppositely directed magnetic fields-between the interplanetary field and the Earth's magnetic field allows energy from the solar wind to enter the near-Earth environment. The Sun's properties, such as its luminosity, are related to its magnetic field, although the connections are still not well understood(3,4). Moreover, changes in the heliospheric magnetic field have been linked with changes in total cloud cover over the Earth, which may influence global climate(5), Here we show that measurements of the near-Earth interplanetary magnetic field reveal that the total magnetic flux leaving the Sun has risen by a factor of 1.4 since 1964: surrogate measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field indicate that the increase since 1901 has been by a factor of 2,3, This increase may be related to chaotic changes in the dynamo that generates the solar magnetic field. We do not yet know quantitatively how such changes will influence the global environment.

The involvement of pertussis toxin (PTX)-sensitive and -insensitive pathways in the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade was examined in ventricular cardiomyocytes cultured from neonatal rats. A number of agonists that activate heterotrimeric G-protein-coupled receptors stimulated MAPK activity after exposure for 5 min. These included foetal calf serum (FCS), endothelin-1 (these two being the most effective of the agonists examined), phenylephrine, endothelin-3, lysophosphatidic acid, carbachol, isoprenaline and angiotensin II. Activation of MAPK and MAPK kinase (MEK) by carbachol returned to control levels within 30-60 min, whereas activation by FCS was more sustained. FPLC on Mono Q showed that carbachol and FCS activated two peaks of MEK and two peaks of MAPK (p42MAPK and p44MAPK). Pretreatment of cells with PTX for 24 h inhibited the activation of MAPK by carbachol, FCS and lysophosphatidic acid, but not that by endothelin-1, phenylephrine or isoprenaline. Involvement of G-proteins in the activation of the cardiac MAPK cascade was demonstrated by the sustained (PTX-insensitive) activation of MAPK (and MEK) after exposure of cells to AlF4-. AlF4- activated PtdIns hydrolysis, as did endothelin-1, endothelin-3, phenylephrine and FCS. In contrast, the effect of lysophosphatidic acid on PtdIns hydrolysis was small and carbachol was without significant effect even after prolonged exposure. We conclude that PTX-sensitive (i.e. Gi/G(o)-linked) and PTX-insensitive (i.e. Gq/Gs-linked) pathways of MAPK activation exist in neonatal ventricular myocytes. FCS may stimulate the MAPK cascade through both pathways.

Polar lows are intense meso- a -scale cyclones that develop over the oceans poleward of the main baroclinic zone. A number of previous studies have reported polar low formation over the Sea of Japan within the East Asian winter monsoon. To understand the climatology of polar lows over the Sea of Japan, a tracking al- gorithm for polar lows is applied to the recent JRA-55 reanalysis. The polar low tracking is applied to 36 cold seasons (October–March) from October 1979 to March 2015. The polar lows over the Sea of Japan reach their maximum intensity on the southeastern side of the midline between the Japanese islands and the Asian continent. Consistent with previous case studies, composite analysis demonstrates that the polar low devel- opment is associated with the enhanced northerly flow on the western side of a synoptic-scale extratropical cyclone, with the cold trough in the midtroposphere and with increased heat fluxes from the sea surface. Furthermore, the present climatological study has revealed two dominant directions of motion of the polar lows: southward and eastward. Southward-moving polar lows are steered by a strong northerly flow in the lower troposphere, which is enhanced on the western side of synoptic-scale extratropical cyclones, while the eastward-moving polar lows occur within a planetary-scale westerly flow in the midlatitudes. Thus, the di- rection of polar low motion reflects the difference in planetary- and synoptic-scale conditions.

Calcium (Ca) is critical for crustaceans due to their molting cycle and its presence in the carapace as calcium carbonate, apart from the usual functions of Ca, such as cell signalling. Ca transport in Dilocarcinus pagei, a freshwater crab, was studied in isolated cells from hepatopancreas to further characterize Ca transport mechanisms in these crabs. Cells were isolated and loaded with Fluo-3, a calcium fluorescent dye. Three different cell treatments were performed: Group 1 cells were Ca free during cell dissociation, and calcium was present (at 1mM) for fluorescence cell loading and transport experiments (FC); Group 2 cells were calcium free during cell dissociation and for transport experiments, but not during cell loading (LC); and Group 3 cells were Ca free during cell dissociation, cell loading and transport experiments (WC). Intracellular Ca was recorded through time after ATP was added to the cells and ATP caused an increase in Ca efflux within 30s in all cells. WC cells showed the smallest Ca efflux compared to the other cells, probably because it was intracellularly Ca ""depleted"". Vanadate and amiloride decreased the Ca efflux when ATP was added to the cells, while verapamil did not cause any effect in Ca efflux, confirming the presence of a Ca(2+)-ATPase sensitive to vanadate in hepatopancreas of D. pagei. In a different set of experiments, cells were also exposed to a Ca pulse of 1 and 10mM during 180s. 10mM Ca increased intracellular Ca compared to 1mM, and the increase was not recovered during the experimental time. Additionally, Ca influx was reduced by verapamil and amiloride, but not completely. The results suggest that Ca influx probably occurs through an undefined exchanger, apart from Ca channels (verapamil sensitive) and electrogenic 1Na(+)(1H(+))/1 Ca(2+) exchanger (amiloride-sensitive). Similarities between freshwater and seawater crabs, lobsters and crayfish in relation to plasma membrane Ca transporters, although the environment where they live is quite diverse, suggest that universal mechanisms for Ca homeostasis are widespread among crustaceans. In this paper an analytical solution of the temperature of an opaque material containing two overlapping and parallel subsurface cylinders, illuminated by a modulated light beam, is presented. The method is based on the expansion of plane and cylindrical thermal waves in series of Bessel and Hankel functions. This model is addressed to the study of heat propagation in composite materials with interconnection between inclusions, as is the case of inverse opals and fiber reinforced composites. Measurements on calibrated samples using lock-in infrared thermography confirm the validity of the model.

We have demonstrated previously that the complex bis[(2-oxindol-3-ylimino)-2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine-N,N`]copper(II), named [Cu(isaepy)(2)], induces AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase)-dependent/p53-mediated apoptosis in tumour cells by targeting mitochondria. In the present study, we found that p38(MAPK) (p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase) is the molecular link in the phosphorylation cascade connecting AMPK to p53. Transfection of SH-SY5Y cells with a dominant-negative mutant of AMPK resulted in a decrease in apoptosis and a significant reduction in phospho-active p38(MAPK) and p53. Similarly, reverse genetics of p38(MAPK) yielded a reduction in p53 and a decrease in the extent of apoptosis, confirming an exclusive hierarchy of activation that proceeds via AMPK/p38(MAPK)/p53. Fuel supplies counteracted [Cu(isaepy)(2)]-induced apoptosis and AMPK/p38(MAPK)/p53 activation, with glucose being the most effective, suggesting a role for energetic imbalance in [Cu(isaepy)(2)] toxicity. Co-administration of 3BrPA (3-bromopyruvate), a well-known inhibitor of glycolysis, and succinate dehydrogenase, enhanced apoptosis and AMPK/p38(MAPK)/p53 signalling pathway activation. Under these conditions, no toxic effect was observed in SOD (superoxide dismutase)-overexpressing SH-SY5Y cells or in PCNs (primary cortical neurons), which are, conversely, sensitized to the combined treatment with [Cu(isaepy)(2)] and 3BrPA only if grown in low-glucose medium or incubated with the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase inhibitor dehydroepiandrosterone. Overall, the results suggest that NADPH deriving from the pentose phosphate pathway contributes to PCN resistance to [Cu(isaepy)(2)] toxicity and propose its employment in combination with 3BrPA as possible tool for cancer treatment.

In this work, we prepared a new magnetically recoverable CoO catalyst through the deposition of the catalytic active metal nanoparticles of 2-3 nm on silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles to facilitate the solid separation from liquid media. The catalyst was fully characterized and presented interesting properties in the oxidation of cyclohexene, as for example, selectivity to the allylic oxidation product. It was also observed that CoO is the most active species when compared to Co(2+), Co(3)O(4) and Fe(3)O(4) in the catalytic conditions studied.

The in-depth oxypropylation of different types of cellulose fibers, namely Avicel, Rayon, Kraft, and Filter Paper, was investigated. New biphasic mono-component materials were obtained, which could be hot-pressed to form films of cellulose fibers dispersed into a thermoplastic matrix. The success of this chemical modification was assessed by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy. differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements. The optimization of this process led to the establishment of the optimal molar ratio between the cellulose CH groups and propylene oxide, which varied as a function of the specific morphology of the fibers. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the research project progress in “the mapping of pedagogical methods in web-based language teaching" by Högskolan Dalarna (Dalarna University). This project will identify the differences in pedagogical methods that are used for online language classes. The pedagogical method defined in this project is what the teachers do to ensure students attain the learning outcomes, for example, planning, designing courses, leading students, knowing students' abilities, implementing activities, etc. So far the members of this project have analyzed the course plans (in the language department at Dalarna University) and categorized the learning outcomes. A questionnaire was constructed based on the learning outcomes and then either sent out remotely to teachers or completed face to face through interviews. The answers provided to the questionnaires enabled the project to identify many differences in how language teachers interact with their students but also, the way of giving feedback, motivating and helping students, types of class activities and materials used. This presentation introduces the progress of the project and identifies the challenges at the language department at Dalarna University. Finally, the advantages and problems of online language proficiency courses will be discussed and suggestions made for future improvement.
