The majority of the kinetic models employed in catalytic after-treatment of exhaust emissions use a global kinetic approach owing to the simplicity because one expression can account for all the steps in a reaction. The major drawback of this approach is the limited predictive capabilities of the models. The intrinsic kinetic approach offers much more information about the processes occurring within the catalytic converter; however, it is significantly more complex and time consuming to develop. In the present work, a methodology which allows accessing a model that combines the simplicity of the global kinetic approach and the accuracy of the intrinsic kinetic approach is reported. To assess the performance of this new approach, the oxidation of carbon monoxide in the presence of nitric oxide as well as a driving cycle was investigated. The modelling of carbon monoxide oxidation with oxygen which utilised the intrinsic kinetic approach with the global kinetic approach was used for the carbon monoxide + nitric oxide reaction (and all remaining reactions for the driving cycle). The comparison of the model results for the dual intrinsic + global kinetic approach with the experimental data obtained for both the reactor and the driving cycle indicate that the dual approach is promising with results significantly better than those obtained with only the global kinetics approach.

Bioprospecting has led to increased interest in potential applications for marine organisms and their by-products. As a rich source of mineralising porous organisms, our seas and oceans could provide new directions for bone tissue engineering particularly in the supply of biomimetic templates that may enhance in vivo and ex vivo bone formation. In this chapter we examine the history of marine organism use in this field; exploring how these organisms could be utilised, given the problems of sustainability, and reviewing the current evidence to support their use for bone repair and regeneration.

Question: How parallel is adaptive evolution when it occurs from different genetic backgrounds?
Background: Divergent evolutionary lineages of several post-glacial fish species including the threespine stickleback are found together in Ireland.
Goals: To investigate the morphological diversity of stickleback populations in Ireland and assess whether morphology evolved in parallel between evolutionary lineages.
Methods: We sampled stickleback from lake, river, and coastal habitats across Ireland. Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA data revealed evolutionary history. Geometric morphometrics and linear trait measurements characterized morphology. We used a multivariate approach to quantify parallel and non-parallel divergence within and between lineages.
Results: Repeated evolution of similar morphologies in similar habitats occurred across Ireland, concordant with patterns observed elsewhere in the stickleback distribution. A strong pattern of habitat-specific morphology existed even among divergent lineages. Furthermore, a strong signal of shared morphological divergence occurred along a marine–freshwater axis. Evidently, deterministic natural selection played a more important role in driving freshwater adaptation than independent evolutionary history.

The efficacy of TiO 2 photocatalysis for the destruction of pathogenic bacteria has been demonstrated by a number of groups over the past two decades. Pathogenic bacteria represent a significant hazard for the food and drink industry. Current practices in this industry dictate that rigorous sanitizing regimes must be regularly implemented resulting in lost production time. The incorporation of a TiO 2 antibacterial surface coating in this setting would be highly desirable. In this paper we report a preliminary study of the efficacy of a TiO 2 coating, doped with the lanthanide, neodymium, at low temperature conditions such as those utilised in the food and drink sector. The rapid destruction of Staphylococcus aureus, a common foodborne pathogen, was observed using TiO 2 films coated to glass and steel substrates.

Metallo-azomethine ylides, generated from imines by the action of amine bases in combination with LiBr or AgOAc, undergo cycloaddition with both 1R, 2S, 5R- and 1S, 2R, 5S-menthyl acrylate at room temperature to give homochiral pyrrolidines in excellent yield. The stronger the base the faster the cycloaddition and the greater the yield with: 2-t-butyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine > DBU > NEt(3) X-Ray crystal structures of representative cycloadducts establish that the absolute configuration of the newly established pyrrolidine stereocentres is independent of the metal salt and the size of the pyrrolidineC(2)-substituent for a series of aryl and aliphatic imines.

INTRODUCTION:Cerebral small-vessel disease has been implicated in the development of Alzheimer’sdisease (AD). The retinal microvasculature enables non-invasive visualization andevaluation of the systemic microcirculation. We evaluated retinal microvascular parametersin a case-control study of AD patients and cognitively-normal controls.

METHODS:Retinal images were computationally analyzed and quantitative retinal parameters (caliber, fractal dimension, tortuosity, and bifurcation) measured. Regression models were used tocompute odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (CI) for AD with adjustment forconfounders.

RESULTS:Retinal images were available in 213 AD participants and 294 cognitively-normal controls.Persons with lower venular fractal dimension (OR per standard deviation [SD] increase, 0.77[CI: 0.62–0.97]) and lower arteriolar tortuosity (OR per SD increase, 0.78 [CI: 0.63–0.97])were more likely to have AD following appropriate adjustment.
DISCUSSION:Patients with AD have a sparser retinal microvascular network and retinal microvascularvariation may represent similar pathophysiological events within the cerebralmicrovasculature of patients with AD.

Gas fired generation currently plays an integral support role ensuring security of supply in power systems with high wind power penetrations due to its technical and economic attributes. However, the increase in variable wind power has affected the gas generation output profile and is pushing the boundaries of the design and operating envelope of gas infrastructure. This paper investigates the mutual dependence and interaction between electricity generation and gas systems through the first comprehensive joined-up, multi-vector energy system analysis for Ireland. Key findings reveal the high vulnerability of the Irish power system to outages on the Irish gas system. It has been shown that the economic operation of the power system can be severely impacted by gas infrastructure outages, resulting in an average system marginal price of up to €167/MWh from €67/MWh in the base case. It has also been shown that gas infrastructure outages pose problems for the location of power system reserve provision, with a 150% increase in provision across a power system transmission bottleneck. Wind forecast error was shown to be a significant cause for concern, resulting in large swings in gas demand requiring key gas infrastructure to operate at close to 100% capacity. These findings are thought to increase in prominence as the installation of wind capacity increases towards 2020, placing further stress on both power and gas systems to maintain security of supply.

In September 2012 the European Commission opened a formal investigation of Gazprom’s business practices in the EU. The Gazprom investigation raises a number of questions. One of them is the issue of jurisdiction—whether EU competition law applies to Gazprom, a foreign company. A day after the opening of the proceeding, in a press note and alongside other issues, Gazprom raised the question of jurisdiction, noting that it complies with laws of the countries in which it operates and that is it ‘registered outside the jurisdiction of the EU’. This statement, possibly, prompted some commentators to consider the applicability of EU law in this case.
In a piece in the ECLR, entitled ‘Iron Curtain at the border: Gazprom and the Russian blocking order to prevent the extraterritoriality of EU competition law’, Sean Morris offered his views on some of the aspects of the Gazprom case, including the issue of jurisdiction. Morris discussed also the blocking Order issued by the Russian President in response to the European Commission’s investigation, and its possible effects in the Gazprom case.
This article seeks to add a few important and relevant issues of law relating to extraterritoriality and the reach of EU law generally and in particular— in the context of the Gazprom investigation and in the light of the Morris article. This piece also sheds some light on the considerations which might have informed Russia’s hastily enactment of the Blocking Order.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed to report and explore the survival of dental veneers constructed from non-feldspathic porcelain over 5 and 10 years.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 4,294 articles were identified through a systematic search involving all databases in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE, Web of Knowledge, specific journals (hand-search), conference proceedings, clinical trials registers, and collegiate contacts. Articles, abstracts, and gray literature were sought by two independent researchers. There were no language limitations. One hundred sixteen studies were identified for full-text assessment, with 10 included in the analysis (5 qualitative, 5 quantitative). Study characteristics and survival (Kaplan-Meier estimated cumulative survival and 95% confidence interval [CI]) were extracted or recalculated. A failed veneer was one which required an intervention that disrupted the original marginal integrity, had been partially or completely lost, or had lost retention more than twice. A meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis of Empress veneers was completed, with an assessment of statistical heterogeneity and publication bias. Clinical heterogeneity was explored for results of all veneering materials from included studies.

RESULTS: Within the 10 studies, veneers were fabricated with IPS Empress, IPS Empress 2, Cerinate, and Cerec computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacture (CAD/CAM) materials VITA Mark I, VITA Mark II, Ivoclar ProCad. The meta-analysis showed the pooled estimate for Empress veneers to be 92.4% (95% CI: 89.8% to 95.0%) for 5-year survival and 66% to 94% (95% CI: 55% to 99%) for 10 years. Data regarding other non-feldspathic porcelain materials were lacking, with only a single study each reporting outcomes for Empress 2, Cerinate, and various Cerec porcelains over 5 years. The sensitivity analysis showed data from one study had an influencing and stabilizing effect on the 5-year pooled estimate.

CONCLUSION: The long-term outcome (> 5 years) of non-feldspathic porcelain veneers is sparsely reported in the literature. This systematic review indicates that the 5-year cumulative estimated survival for etchable non-feldspathic porcelain veneers is over 90%. Outcomes may prove clinically acceptable with time, but evidence remains lacking and the use of these materials for veneers remains experimental.

PURPOSE: This systematic review reports on the survival of feldspathic porcelain veneers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (OVID), Embase, Web of Knowledge, selected journals, clinical trials registers, and conference proceedings were searched independently by two reviewers. Academic colleagues were also contacted to identify relevant research. Inclusion criteria were human cohort studies (prospective and retrospective) and controlled trials assessing outcomes of feldspathic porcelain veneers in more than 15 patients and with at least some of the veneers in situ for 5 years. Of 4,294 articles identified, 116 studies underwent full-text screenings and 69 were further reviewed for eligibility. Of these, 11 were included in the qualitative analysis and 6 (5 cohorts) were included in meta-analyses. Estimated cumulative survival and standard error for each study were assessed and used for meta-, sensitivity, and post hoc analyses. The I2 statistic and the Cochran Q test and its associated P value were used to evaluate statistical heterogeneity, with a random-effects meta-analysis used when the P value for heterogeneity was less than .1. Galbraith, forest, and funnel plots explored heterogeneity, publication patterns, and small study biases.

RESULTS: The estimated cumulative survival for feldspathic porcelain veneers was 95.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 92.9% to 98.4%) at 5 years and ranged from 64% to 95% at 10 years across three studies. A post hoc meta-analysis indicated that the 10-year best estimate may approach 95.6% (95% CI: 93.8% to 97.5%). High levels of statistical heterogeneity were found.

CONCLUSIONS: When bonded to enamel substrate, feldspathic porcelain veneers have a very high 10-year survival rate that may approach 95%. Clinical heterogeneity is associated with differences in reported survival rates. Use of clinically relevant survival definitions and careful reporting of tooth characteristics, censorship, clustering, and precise results in future research would improve metaanalytic estimates and aid treatment decisions.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic substances, highly resistant to environmental degradation, which can bio-accumulate and have long-range atmospheric transport potential. Most studies focus on single compound effects, however as humans are exposed to several POPs simultaneously, investigating exposure effects of real life POP mixtures on human health is necessary. A defined mixture of POPs was used, where the compound concentration reflected its contribution to the levels seen in Scandinavian human serum (total mix). Several sub mixtures representing different classes of POP were also constructed. The perfluorinated (PFC) mixture contained six perfluorinated compounds, brominated (Br) mixture contained seven brominated compounds, chlorinated (Cl) mixture contained polychlorinated biphenyls and also p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, hexachlorobenzene, three chlordanes, three hexachlorocyclohexanes and dieldrin. Human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cells were used for 2h and 48h exposures to the seven mixtures and analysis on a CellInsight™ NXT High Content Screening platform. Multiple cytotoxic endpoints were investigated: cell number, nuclear intensity and area, mitochondrial mass and membrane potential (MMP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Both the Br and Cl mixtures induced ROS production but did not lead to apoptosis. The PFC mixture induced the ROS production and likely induced cell apoptosis accompanied by the dissipation of MMP. Synergistic effects were evident for ROS induction when cells were exposed to the PFC+Br mixture. No significant effects were detected in the Br+Cl, PFC+Cl or total mixtures, which contain the same concentrations of chlorinated compounds as the Cl mixture plus additional compounds; highlighting the need for further exploration of POP mixtures in risk assessment.

Our objective is to define differences in circulating lipoprotein subclasses between intensive vs. conventional management of Type 1 diabetes during the randomization phase of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). Nuclear magnetic resonance-determined lipoprotein subclass profiles (NMR-LSP), which estimate molar subclass concentrations and mean particle diameters, were determined in 1,294 DCCT subjects after a median of five (interquartile range: four, six) years following randomization to intensive or conventional diabetes management. In cross-sectional analyses, we compared standard lipids and NMR-LSP between treatment groups. Standard total-, LDL- and HDL-cholesterol levels were similar between randomization groups, while triglyceride levels were lower in the intensively treated group. NMR-LSP showed that intensive therapy was associated with larger LDL diameter (20.7 vs. 20.6 nm, p=0.01) and lower levels of small LDL (median: 465 vs. 552 nmol/l, p=0.007), total IDL/LDL (mean: 1000 vs. 1053 nmol/l, p=0.01), and small HDL (mean: 17.3 vs. 18.6 μmol/l, p<0.0001), the latter accounting for reduced total HDL (mean: 33.8 vs. 34.8 μmol/l, p=0.01). In conclusion, intensive diabetes therapy was associated with potentially favorable changes in LDL and HDL subclasses in sera. Further research will determine whether these changes contribute to the beneficial effects of intensive diabetes management on vascular complications.

Purpose: The recently completed Chinese "Million Cataract Surgeries Program" (MCSP) is among the largest such campaigns ever, providing 1.05 million operations. We report MCSP outcomes for the first time, in Jiangxi, the province with the greatest program output. Methods: Ten county hospitals participating in MCSP were selected in Jiangxi (range of gross domestic product per capita US$743-2998). Each hospital sought to enroll 75 consecutive MCSP patients aged ≥50 years. Data recorded included type of cataract procedure, bilateral uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and refractive error pre- and ≥50 days postoperatively. Results: Among 715 patients (mean age 72.3±9.1 years, 55.5% female), preoperative UCVA was <3/60 (legally blind) bilaterally in 13.3% and unilaterally in the operated eye in 50.9%. No subjects had UCVA >6/18 preoperatively. Small incision cataract surgery was performed in 92.3% patients. Among 662 patients (92.6%) completing follow-up was ≥ 40 days after surgery, BCVA was ≥6/18 in 80.1%, UCVA was ≥6/18 in 57.1% and UCVA was <3/60 in 2.1%. Older age (p<0.001), female sex (p=0.04), worse refractive error (p=0.02) and presence of intra- (p=0.002) and postoperative surgical complications (p<0.001), were independently associated with worse postoperative UCVA. Based on these results, the MCSP cured an estimated 124,950 cases (13.3%×[100-2.1%]×1.05 million) of bilateral and 502,500 (50.9%×[100-2.1%]×1.05 million) of unilateral blindness. Conclusions: Due to relatively good outcomes and the large number of surgeries performed on blind persons, the sight-restoring impact of the MCSP was probably substantial. © Informa Healthcare USA, Inc.

In co-melt granulation, collisions occur between the particles to be agglomerated and the binder material. Depending on the stage of granulation, the binder material can be in the solid or liquid phase. The outcome of these collisions controls the dynamics of the granulation process and the fundamental physics of the impacts are of interest. This paper examines the impact of glass beads (model particles) and solid Poly Ethylene Glycol (PEG) flakes on a substrate of PEG as the temperature of the PEG layer is increased from below its melting point to above it. While the layer is in the solid state, the result of the impact can be quantified by the coefficient of restitution. When the layer is in the liquid state, the impact can be quantified by the immersion behaviour. The results obtained show that the coefficient of restitution between either glass beads and PEG flakes and the PEG layer is strongly affected by temperatures. As the PEG layer approaches its melting point, the coefficient of restitution falls to zero. Once the temperature of the PEG layer exceeds the melting point, the impact is characterised by a transient maximum indentation and then rebound to an equilibrium position. These too are strongly dependent on temperature.
