Strength Development of Concrete Based on Maturity and Pulse Velocity, MLR-95-03, 1995

The effect of curing temperature, in the range of 4.4 to 22.8 degrees C (40 to 73 degrees F), on strength development was studied based on the maturity and pulse velocity measurements in this report. The strength-maturity relationships for various mixes using a Type I cement and using a Type IP cement, respectively, were experimentally developed. The similar curves for early age strength development of both the patching concrete, using a Type I cement with the addition of calcium chloride, and the fast track concrete, using a Type III cement and fly ash, have also been proposed. For the temperature ranges studied, the strength development of concrete can be determined using a pulse velocity measurement, but only for early ages up to 24 hours. These obtained relationships can be used to determine when a pavement can be opened to traffic. The amount of fly ash substitution, up to 30%, did not have a significant influence on the strength-maturity relationship.

Instrumentation of Paver Vibrators, MLR-95-10, 1999

Premature deterioration of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements led to investigations for causes of the concrete failures. Evidence of parallel longitudinal cracks in deteriorating pavements, with crack spacings similar to paver vibrator spacings, made it clear that the vibrators were related to the cause for deterioration. After a number of field trips observing paving operations and measuring vibrator frequencies, it soon became clear that the paver vibrators were, in many cases, not running in compliance with the Iowa DOT specification. The specified frequency was from 5000 to 8000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The pavers visited did not have a monitoring system to give a continuous frequency readout for any of it's vibrators. Occasionally, during a paving operation, frequency readings were taken on some vibrators with a hand held tachometer. However, that degree of monitoring was found to be far from providing the quality of information and control necessary to maintain compliance to the Iowa DOT specification. A paver vibrator monitoring system, which would operate continuously while paving and cover all vibrators, was determined to be essential. The output must be visible to the paver operator and inspector at all times.

Microadenomas hipofisários: revisão de 95 casos

Procedemos a uma revisão de 95 casos de microadenomas hipofisários, evidenciados por ressonância magnética, nas instituições: Hospital Santa Cruz/Beneficência Portuguesa de Niterói e Clínica X-Labs/Rio de Janeiro. O objetivo foi verificar o tipo principal, incidência, proximidade à haste hipofisária, correlacionando-os com dados clínico-laboratoriais. Os equipamentos utilizados foram de 0,5 Tesla (Gyroscan T5 III da Philips e Vectra da GE) e 1,0 Tesla (Signa da GE), sendo realizadas seqüências rápidas, antes e após administração venosa do meio de contraste paramagnético (gadolínio). Predominaram pacientes do sexo feminino, com prolactinomas, sendo as queixas mais freqüentes: galactorréia, amenorréia e hiperprolactinemia. Em contraste à literatura corrente, observamos que mais freqüentemente a haste hipofisária encontrava-se centrada. Na detecção dos microadenomas é fundamental a injeção venosa do gadolínio o mais próximo possível da aquisição das imagens, sendo recomendável utilizar metade da dose do meio de contraste.

95. kadettikurssin maavoimien kadettialiupseerien johtamiskäyttäytymisen tarkastelua syväjohtamisen näkökulmasta

Kadettien näkemyksiä hyvistä johtajista ja kouluttajista on tutkittu aikaisemmin. Kadettikursseille nimetään kadettijohtajia, joista jokainen saa johtamistehtävän. Nämä kadettijohtajat muodostavat kadettialiupseerijärjestelmän. Kadettialiupseerijärjestelmää ja kadettiesimiesten johtamista ei ole tutkittu aikaisemmin. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää kadettialiupseerien johtamisen ominaisuuksia ja löytää yhteneväisyyksiä kadettialiupseerien välillä. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään myös kadettialiupseeriorganisaation taustoja ja kadettialiupseeriksi ylentämiseen liittyviä perusteita. Tutkimus on kvalitatiivinen tapaustutkimus. Tutkimuksen tieteellinen viitekehys pohjautuu Vesa Nissisen Syväjohtamisen malliin. Aineistonkeruu suoritettiin teettämällä johtajaprofiilit arvioitavista henkilöistä. Tutkimusta täydennettiin avoimilla kysymyksillä. Tutkimustulokset arvioitiin tietokonepohjaisella JOTOS- ohjelmalla sekä teemoittelutaulukolla. Kirjallisuuden lisäksi käytettiin Kadettikoulun henkilökunnan haastatteluja aiheen tukemiseksi. Tutkimuskohteena olivat 95. kadettikurssin viisi maavoimien kadettialiupseeria. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella kadetit arvostivat omassa kadettijohtajassaan ammattitaitoa johtajan valmiuksista. Johtamiskäyttäytymisen osa-alueista esille nousivat luottamuksen rakentaminen omaan johtajaan ja passiivisen johtamisen puuttuminen. Johtamisen vaikutuksista kadetit arvostivat omissa johtajissaan johtamisen tehokkuutta ja tyytyväisyyttä sekä oman tehtävän täyttämistä. Tutkimus herätti mielenkiintoa jatkotutkimukselle. Jatkotutkimuksessa tutkimus keskittyisi jo valmistuneiden kadettialiupseerien tutkimiseen. Erityismielenkiinnon kohteena olisi heidän johtamistehtäviensä vaikutus työuran aloittamisessa.
