Two Chrastil type expressions have been developed to model the solubility of supercritical fluids/gases in liquids. The three parameter expressions proposed correlates the solubility as a function of temperature, pressure and density. The equation can also be used to check the self-consistency of the experimental data of liquid phase compositions for supercritical fluid-liquid equilibria. Fifty three different binary systems (carbon-dioxide + liquid) with around 2700 data points encompassing a wide range of compounds like esters, alcohols, carboxylic acids and ionic liquids were successfully modeled for a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Besides the test for self-consistency, based on the data at one temperature, the model can be used to predict the solubility of supercritical fluids in liquids at different temperatures. Productive infection of human endothelial cells with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a single stranded RNA virus induces shedding of sHLA-E. We show here that sHLA-E that is released upon infection with this flavivirus can inhibit IL-2 and PMA mediated ERK 1/2 phosphorylation in two NK cell lines, Nishi and NKL. Virus infected or IFN-gamma treated cell culture supernatants containing sHLA-E were found to partially inhibit IL-2 mediated induction of CD25 molecules on NKL cells. It was also found that sHLA-E could inhibit IL-2 induced H-3]-thymidine incorporation suggesting that, similar to cell surface expressed HLA-E, sHLA-E could also inhibit NK cell responses. Hence JEV-induced shedding of sHLA-E needs further investigation to better understand immune responses in JEV infections since it may have a role in viral evasion of NK cell responses. The AA5086 aluminum alloy sheets with different starting textures were subjected to shock wave deformation with an input impulse of similar to 0.2 Ns. Microstructural examination indicate no significant change in grain size; however, the evolution of substructure manifesting intra-granular misorientation was evident. The improvement in hardness indicates the absence of recovery and strain hardening during shock deformation. Shock deformed samples show characteristic texture evolution with high Brass {110}< 112 > component. The study demonstrates the viability of high velocity forming of AA5086 aluminum alloy sheet using shock wave. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Detailed pedofacies characterization along-with lithofacies investigations of the Mio-Pleistocene Siwalik sediments exposed in the Ramnagar sub-basin have been studied so as to elucidate variability in time and space of fluvial processes and the role of intra- and extra-basinal controls on fluvial sedimentation during the evolution of the Himalayan foreland basin (HFB). Dominance of multiple, moderately to strongly developed palaeosol assemblages during deposition of Lower Siwalik (similar to 12-10.8 Ma) sediments suggest that the HFB was marked by Upland set-up of Thomas et al. (2002). Activity of intra-basinal faults on the uplands and deposition of terminal fans at different times caused the development of multiple soils. Further, detailed pedofacies along-with lithofacies studies indicate prevalence of stable tectonic conditions and development of meandering streams with broad floodplains. However, the Middle Siwalik (similar to 10.8-4.92 Ma) sub-group is marked by multistoried sandstones and minor mudstone and mainly weakly developed palaeosols, indicating deposition by large braided rivers in the form of megafans in a Lowland set-up of Thomas et al. (2002). Significant change in nature and size of rivers from the Lower to Middle Siwalik at similar to 10 Ma is found almost throughout of the basin from Kohat Plateau (Pakistan) to Nepal because the Himalayan orogeny witnessed its greatest tectonic upheaval at this time leading to attainment of great heights by the Himalaya, intensification of the monsoon, development of large rivers systems and a high rate of sedimentation, hereby a major change from the Upland set-up to the Lowland set-up over major parts of the HFB. An interesting geomorphic environmental set-up prevailed in the Ramnagar sub-basin during deposition of the studied Upper Siwalik (similar to 4.92 to <1.68 Ma) sediments as observed from the degree of pedogenesis and the type of palaeosols. In general, the Upper Siwalik sub-group in the Ramnagar sub-basin is subdivided from bottom to top into the Purmandal sandstone (4.92-4.49 Ma), Nagrota (4.49-1.68 Ma) and Boulder Conglomerate (<1.68 Ma) formations on the basis of sedimentological characters and change in dominant lithology. Presence of mudstone, a few thin gravel beds and dominant sandstone lithology with weakly to moderately developed palaeosols in the Purmandal sandstone Fm. indicates deposition by shallow braided fluvial streams. The deposition of mudstone dominant Nagrota Fm. with moderately to some well developed palaeosols and a zone of gleyed palaeosols with laminated mudstones and thin sandstones took place in an environment marked by numerous small lakes, water-logged regions and small streams in an environment just south of the Piedmont zone, perhaps similar to what is happening presently in the Upland region/the Upper Gangetic plain. This area is locally called the `Trai region' (Pascoe, 1964). Deposition of Boulder Conglomerate Fm. took place by gravelly braided river system close to the Himalayan Ranges. Activity along the Main Boundary Fault led to progradation of these environments distal-ward and led to development of on the whole a coarsening upward sequence. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. A direct discretization approach and an operator-splitting scheme are applied for the numerical simulation of a population balance system which models the synthesis of urea with a uni-variate population. The problem is formulated in axisymmetric form and the setup is chosen such that a steady state is reached. Both solvers are assessed with respect to the accuracy of the results, where experimental data are used for comparison, and the efficiency of the simulations. Depending on the goal of simulations, to track the evolution of the process accurately or to reach the steady state fast, recommendations for the choice of the solver are given. We estimate transverse spin single spin asymmetry(TSSA) in the process e + p(up arrow) -> J/psi + X using color evaporation model of charmonium production. We take into account transverse momentum dependent(TMD) evolution of Sivers function and parton distribution function and show that the there is a reduction in the asymmetry as compared to our earlier estimates wherein the Q(2) - evolution was implemented only through DGLAP evolution of unpolarized gluon densities.

The shearing of ordered gamma' precipitates by matrix dislocations results in the formation of antiphase boundaries (APB) in Ni-base superalloys. The APB energy is an important source of order-strengthening in disk and blade alloys where Ti and Ta substitute for Al in gamma'. While the importance of APB energy is well-acknowledged, the effect of alloying on APB energy is not fully understood. In the present study, the effect of Ti and Ta additions on the {111} and {010} APB energies was probed via electronic structure calculations. Results suggest that at low levels of Ti/Ta, APB energies on either plane increases with alloying. However, at higher Ti/Ta levels, the APB energies decrease with alloying. These trends understood by accounting for nearest neighbour violations about the APB and additionally, invoking the effect of precipitate composition on the energy penalty of the violations. We propose an Environment Dependent Nearest Neighbour Bond (EDNNB) model that predicts APB energies that are in close agreement to calculated values.

Oocytes present at birth undergo a progressive process of apoptosis in humans and other mammals as they age. Accepted opinion is that no fresh oocytes are produced other than those present at the time of birth. Studies have shown that DNA repair genes in oocytes of mice and women decline with age, and lack of these genes show higher DNA breaks and increased oocyte death rates. In contrast to the ethical problems associated with monitoring the changes in DNA double-strand breaks in oocytes from young and old humans, it is relatively easy to carry out such a study using a rodent model. In this study, the mRNA levels of DNA repair genes are compared with protein products of some of the genes in the primordial follicles isolated from immature (18-20 days) and aged (400-450 days) female rats. Results revealed a significant decline in mRNA levels of BRAC1 (P < 0.01), RAD51 (P < 0.05), ERCC2 (P < 0.05), and H2AX (P < 0.01) of DNA repair genes and phospho-protein levels of BRAC1 (P < 0.01) and H2AX (P < 0.05) in primordial follicles of aged rats. Impaired DNA repair is confirmed as a mechanism of oocyte ageing. (C) 2014 Reproductive Healthcare Ltd. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work deals with the homogenization of an initial- and boundary-value problem for the doubly-nonlinear system D(t)w - del.(z) over right arrow = g(x, t, x/epsilon) (0.1) w is an element of alpha(u, x/epsilon) (0.2) (z) over right arrow is an element of (gamma) over right arrow (del u, x/epsilon) (0.3) Here epsilon is a positive parameter; alpha and (gamma) over right arrow are maximal monotone with respect to the first variable and periodic with respect to the second one. The inclusions (0.2) and (0.3) are here formulated as null-minimization principles, via the theory of Fitzpatrick MR 1009594]. As epsilon -> 0, a two-scale formulation is derived via Nguetseng's notion of two-scale convergence, and a (single-scale) homogenized problem is then retrieved. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents the results of the laboratory model tests and the numerical studies conducted on small diameter PVC pipes, buried in geocell reinforced sand beds. The aim of the study was to evaluate the suitability of the geocell reinforcement in protecting the underground utilities and buried pipelines. In addition to geocells, the efficacy of only geogrid and geocell with additional basal geogrid cases were also studied. A PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) pipe with external diameter 75 mm and thickness 1.4 mm was used in the experiments. The vehicle tire contact pressure was simulated by applying the pressure on the top of the bed with the help of a steel plate. Results suggest that the use of geocells with additional basal geogrid considerably reduces the deformation of the pipe as compared to other types of reinforcements. Further, the depth of placement of pipe was also varied between 1B to 2B (B is the width of loading plate) below the plate in the presence of geocell with additional basal geogrid. More than 50% reduction in the pressure and more than 40% reduction in the strain values were observed in the presence of reinforcements at different depths as compared to the unreinforced beds. Conversely, the performance of the subgrade soil was also found to be marginally influenced by the position of the pipe, even in the presence of the relatively stiff reinforcement system. Further, experimental results were validated with 3-dimensional numerical studies using FLAC(3D) (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in 3D). A good agreement in the measured pipe stain values were observed between the experimental and numerical studies. Numerical studies revealed that the geocells distribute the stresses in the lateral direction and thus reduce the pressure on the pipe. In addition, the results of the 1-g model tests were scaled up to the prototype case of the shallow buried pipeline below the pavement using the appropriate scaling laws. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Lipase and surfactant together form a potent pair in various biotransformation, industrial application and biotechnological studies. The present investigation deals with changes in the activity, stability and structure of lipase from Rhizopus oryzae NRRL 3562 in presence of long chain ionic liquid-type imidazolium surfactant. Both the activity and stability were found to be enhanced in presence of the surfactant at low concentration (1-125 mu M) followed by inhibition at high concentration. The activity increased by 80% and thermal deactivation temperature raised by 2.5 degrees C. Investigations by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and circular dichroism revealed structural changes leading to rise in beta-sheet content and lowering of a-helix at low surfactant concentrations. Deactivation at high concentration correlated with greater structural changes depicted by spectroscopic studies. Isothermal titration calorimetric studies showed the binding to be spontaneous in nature involving non-covalent interactions. High negative value of entropy signifies exposure of hydrophobic domains and increase in structural rigidity, which correlates with active site being more accessible and rigid in presence of the surfactant. Application of these surfactants hold greater potential in the field of lipase based biotransformations, enzyme structural modifications and studies. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The current day networks use Proactive networks for adaption to the dynamic scenarios. The use of cognition technique based on the Observe, Orient, Decide and Act loop (OODA) is proposed to construct proactive networks. The network performance degradation in knowledge acquisition and malicious node presence is a problem that exists. The use of continuous time dynamic neural network is considered to achieve cognition. The variance in service rates of user nodes is used to detect malicious activity in heterogeneous networks. The improved malicious node detection rates are proved through the experimental results presented in this paper. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
