In this paper we investigate the effect of terminal substituents on the dynamics of spin and charge transport in donor-acceptor substituted polyenes [D-(CH)(x)-A] chains, also known as push-pull polyenes. We employ a long-range correlated model Hamiltonian for the D-(CH)(x)-A system, and time-dependent density matrix renormalization group technique for time propagating the wave packet obtained by injecting a hole at a terminal site, in the ground state of the system. Our studies reveal that the end groups do not affect spin and charge velocities in any significant way, but change the amount of charge transported. We have compared these push-pull systems with donor-acceptor substituted polymethine imine (PMI), D-(CHN)(x)-A, systems in which besides electron affinities, the nature of p(z) orbitals in conjugation also alternate from site to site. We note that spin and charge dynamics in the PMIs are very different from that observed in the case of push-pull polyenes, and within the time scale of our studies, transport of spin and charge leads to the formation of a ``quasi-static'' state.

Zn(1-x)Fe(x)O(1+0.5x) (x = 0.5-5 mol%) nanoparticles were synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion route. The structural characterization of these nanoparticles by PXRD, SEM and TEM confirmed the phase purity of the samples and indicated a reduction in the particle size with increase in Fe content. A small increase in micro strain in the Fe doped nanocrystals is observed from W-H plots. EPR spectrum exhibits an intense resonance signal with effective g values at g approximate to 2.0 with a sextet hyperfine structure (hfs) besides a weak signal at g approximate to 4.13. The signal at g approximate to 2.0 with a sextet hyperfine structure might be due to manganese impurity where as the resonance signal at g approximate to 4.13 is due to iron. The optical band gap E-g was found to decrease with increase of Fe content. Raman spectra exhibit two non-polar optical phonon (E-2) modes at low and high frequencies at 100 and 435 cm(-1) in Fe doped samples. These modes broaden and disappear with increase of Fe do pant concentration. TL measurements of gamma-irradiated (1-5 kGy) samples show a main glow peak at 368 degrees C at a warming rate of 6.7 degrees Cs-1. The thermal activation parameters were estimated from Glow peak shape method. The average activation energy was found to be in the range 0.34-2.81 eV. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis of THF coordinated aluminium nanoparticles by the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method is described. These colloids are not stable with respect to precipitation of aluminium nanoparticles. The precipitated aluminium nanopowder is highly pyrophoric. Highly monodisperse colloidal aluminium nanoparticles (3.1 +/- 0.6 nm) stabilized by a capping agent, hexadecyl amine (HDA), have also been prepared by the SMAD method. They are stable towards precipitation of particles for more than a week. The Al-HDA nanoparticles are not as pyrophoric as the Al-THF samples. Particles synthesized in this manner were characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Annealing of the Al-HDA nanoparticles resulted in carbonization of the capping agent on the surface of the particles which imparts air stability to them. Carbonization of the capping agent was established using Raman spectroscopy and TEM. The annealed aluminium nanoparticles were found to be stable even upon their exposure to air for over a month which was evident from the powder XRD, TGA/DSC, and TEM studies. The successful passivation was further confirmed with the determination of high active aluminium content (95 wt%) upon exposure and storage under air.

A single-step magnetic separation procedure that can remove both organic pollutants and arsenic from contaminated water is clearly a desirable goal. Here we show that water dispersible magnetite nanoparticles prepared by anchoring carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CMCD) cavities to the surface of magnetic nanoparticles are suitable host carriers for such a process. Monodisperse, 10 nm, spherical magnetite, Fe3O4, nanocrystals were prepared by the thermal decomposition of FeOOH. Trace amounts of antiferromagnet, FeO, present in the particles provides an exchange bias field that results in a high superparamagnetic blocking temperature and appreciable magnetization values that facilitate easy separation of the nanocrystals from aqueous dispersions on application of modest magnetic fields. We show here that small molecules like naphthalene and naphthol can be removed from aqueous media by forming inclusion complexes with the anchored cavities of the CMCD-Fe3O4 nanocrystals followed by separation of the nanocrystals by application of a magnetic field. The adsorption properties of the iron oxide surface towards As ions are unaffected by the CMCD capping so it too can be simultaneously removed in the separation process. The CMCD-Fe3O4 nanocrystals provide a versatile platform for magnetic separation with potential applications in water remediation.

We describe a hybrid synthetic protocol, the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method, for the synthesis and stabilization of monodisperse amorphous cobalt nanoparticles. By employing an optimized ratio of a weakly coordinating solvent and a capping agent monodisperse colloidal cobalt nanoparticles (2 +/- 0.5 nm) have been prepared by the SMAD method. However, the as-prepared samples were found to be oxidatively unstable which was elucidated by their magnetic studies. Oxidative stability in our case was achieved via a pyrolysis process that led to the decomposition of the organic solvent and the capping agent resulting in the formation of carbon encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles which was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Controlled annealing at different temperatures led to the phase transformation of metallic cobalt from the hcp to fcc phase. The magnetic behaviour varies with the phase and the particle size; especially, the coercivity of nanoparticles exhibited strong dependence on the phase transformation of cobalt. The high saturation magnetization close to that of the bulk value was achieved in the case of the annealed samples. In addition to detailed structural and morphological characterization, the results of thermal and magnetic studies are also presented.

A simple, rapid, and surfactant-free synthesis of crystalline copper nanostructures has been carried out through microwave irradiation of a solution of copper acetylacetonate in benzyl alcohol. The structures are found to be stable against oxidation in ambient air for several months. High-resolution electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) reveals that the copper samples comprise nanospheres measuring about 150 nm in diameter, each made of copper nanocrystals similar to 7 nm in extension. The nanocrystals are densely packed into spherical aggregates, the driving force being minimization of surface area and surface energy, and are thus immune to oxidation in ambient air. Such aggregates can also be adherently supported on SiO2 and Al2O3 when these substrates are immersed in the irradiated solution. The air-stable copper nanostructures exhibit surface enhanced Raman scattering, as evidenced by the detection of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid at 10(-6) M concentrations.

This work describes the formation of hydrogels from sodium cholate solution in the presence of a variety of metal ions (Ca2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Ag+). Morphological studies of the xerogels by electron microscopy reveal the presence of helical nanofibres. The rigid helical framework in the calcium cholate hydrogel was utilised to synthesize hybrid materials (AuNPs and AgNPs). Doping of transition metal salts into the calcium cholate hydrogel brings out the possibility of synthesising metal sulphide nano-architectures keeping the hydrogel network intact. These novel gel-nanoparticle hybrid materials have encouraging application potentials.

The present work demonstrates a novel strategy to synthesize orthogonally bio-engineered magnetonanohybrids (MNPs) through the design of versatile, biocompatible linkers whose structure includes: (i) a robust anchor to bind with metal-oxide surfaces; (ii) tailored surface groups to act as spacers and (iii) a general method to implement orthogonal functionalizations of the substrate via ``click chemistry''. Ligands that possess the synthetic generality of features (i)-(iii) are categorized as ``universal ligands''. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel, azido-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) silane that can easily self-assemble on MNPs through hetero-condensation between surface hydroxyl groups and the silane end of the ligand, and simultaneously provide multiple clickable sites for high density, chemoselective bio-conjugation. To establish the universal-ligand-strategy, we clicked alkyl-functionalized folate onto the surface of PEGylated MNPs. By further integrating a near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) marker (Alexa-Fluor 647) with MNPs, we demonstrated their folate-receptor mediated internalization inside cancer cells and subsequent translocation into lysosomes and mitochondria. Ex vivo NIRF imaging established that the azido-PEG-silane developed in course of the study can effectively reduce the sequestration of MNPs by macrophage organs (viz. liver and spleen). These folate-PEG-MNPs were not only stealth and noncytotoxic but their dual optical and magnetic properties aided in tracking their whereabouts through combined magnetic resonance and optical imaging. Together, these results provided a strong motivation for the future use of the ``universal ligand'' strategy towards development of ``smart'' nanohybrids for theragnostic applications.

Polycrystalline powders of Ba1-xCaxBi4Ti4O15 (where x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1) were prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering techniques have been employed to probe into the structural changes on changing x. XRD analyses confirmed the formation of monophasic bismuth layered structure of all the above compositions with an increase in orthorhombic distortion with increase in x. Raman spectra revealed a redshift in A(1g) peak and an increase in the B-2g/B-3g splitting with increasing Ca content. The average grain size was found to increase with increasing x. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant (T-m) increased linearly with increasing Ca-content whereas the diffuseness of the phase transition was found to decrease with the end member CaBi4Ti4O15 showing a frequency independent sharp phase transition around 1048 K. Ca doping resulted in a decrease in the remnant polarization and an increase in the coercive field. Ba0.75Ca0.25Bi4Ti4O15 ceramics showed an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of 15 pC N-1 at room temperature. Low values of dielectric losses and tunability of temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (tau(epsilon)) in the present solid-solution suggest that these compounds can be of potential use in microwave dielectrics at high temperatures. We report a simple, template free and low-temperature hydrothermal reaction pathway using Cu(II) - thiourea complex (prepared in situ from copper (II) chloride and thiourea as precursors) and citric acid as complexing agent to synthesize two-dimensional hierarchical nano-structures of covellite (CuS). The product was characterized with the help of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The concentration of citric acid in the hydrothermal precursor solution was seen to have a profound effect on the nanostructure of the product generated. Based on the outcoming product nano-architecture at different concentration of the ionic surfactant in the hydrothermal precursor solution a possible mechanism suited for reaction and further nucleation is also discussed. A new family of ricinoleic acid based polyesters was synthesized using catalyst free melt-condensation polymerization with sebacic acid, citric acid, mannitol and ricinoleic acid as precursors. The use of FT-IR and NMR characterisation techniques confirms the presence of ester linkages in the as-synthesized polymers. Depending on the precursor combination, their relative amount and the degree of curing, a broad range of elastic modulus (22-327 MPa) and tensile strength (0.7-12.7 MPa) can be obtained in the newly synthesized biopolymers. The polymers show rubbery behaviour at a physiological temperature (37 degrees C) and the contact angles of the synthesized polymers fall in the range of 42 degrees to 71 degrees, making them ideal substrates to study delivery of drugs through polymer scaffolds. The cytocompatibility assessment of the cured polymers confirmed good cell attachment and growth of smooth muscle cells (C2C12 myoblast cells). Importantly, oriented cell growth was observed after culturing myoblast cells for 3 days. The in vitro degradation in PBS indicates that the mild cured polymers follow a first order reaction kinetics and have degradation rate constants in the range of 0.009-0.038 h(-1), depending on the relative proportions of monomers. Overall, the results of our study indicate that the physical properties can be tailored by varying the composition of the monomers and curing conditions in the newly developed polyesters. Hence, they may be used as potential substrates for tissue engineering scaffolds and for localized drug delivery.

We have demonstrated that cadmium deoxycholate (1), a Cd-salt, provides a convenient and inexpensive route to high quality CdSe nanocrystals with photoluminescence (PL) in the blue to red region of the visible spectrum, with reproducible quantum yields as high as similar to 47%. Owing to the high thermal stability of the bile acid based cadmium precursor (decomposition point: 332 degrees C), it was possible to achieve high injection and growth temperatures (similar to 300 degrees C) for the nanocrystals, which was essential for obtaining larger CdSe nanocrystals emitting in the red region (625-650 nm) with a sharp full width at half maximum (FWHM) (23 nm) and multiple (6-7) excitonic absorption features. The as-prepared CdSe nanocrystals synthesized from cadmium deoxycholate represent a series of highly efficient emitters with pure colours and controllable sizes, shapes and structures.

Nanocrystalline delta-NbNx samples have been synthesized by reacting NbCl5 and urea at three different temperatures. A comparison of their structural, magnetic, transport and thermal properties is reported in the present study. The size of the particles and their agglomeration extent increase with increasing reaction temperature. The sample prepared at 900 degrees C showed the highest superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of 16.2 K with a transition width, similar to 1.8 K, as obtained from the resistivity measurement on cold-pressed bars. Above T-c, magnetization measurements revealed the presence of surface ferromagnetism which coexists with superconductivity below T-c. Heat capacity measurements confirm superconductivity with strong electron-phonon coupling constant. The sample prepared at 800 degrees C shows a lower T-c (10 K) while that prepared at 700 degrees C exhibit no superconductivity down to the lowest temperature (3 K) measured.

The blending of perfluorinated bile ester derivatives with the gelator 2,3-didecyloxyanthracene (DDOA) yields a new class of hybrid organo- and aerogels displaying a combination of optical and mechanical properties that differ from those of pure gels. Indeed, the nanofibers constituting the hybrid organogels emit polarized blue light and display dichroic near-UV absorption via the achiral DDOA molecules, thanks to their association with a chiral bile ester. Moreover, the thermal stability and the mechanical yield stress of the mixed organogels in DMSO are enhanced for blends of DDOA with the deoxycholic gelator (DC11) having a C-11 chain, as compared to the pure components' gels. When the chain length of the ester is increased to C-13 (DC13) a novel compound for aerogel formation directly in scCO(2) is obtained under the studied conditions. A mixture of this compound with DDOA is also able to gelate scCO(2) leading to novel composite aerogel materials. As revealed by SAXS measurements, the hybrid and the pure DDOA and DC13 aerogels display cell parameters that are very similar. These SAXS experiments suggest that crystallographic conditions are very favorable for the growth of hybrid molecular arrangements in which DDOA and DC13 units could be interchanged. Specific molecular interactions between two components are not always a pre-requisite condition for the formation of a hybrid nanostructured material in which the components mutually induce properties.

Novel composite cyclodextrin (CD)-CaCO3 spherical porous microparticles have been synthesized through Ca2+-CD complex formation, which influences the crystal growth of CaCO3. The CDs are entrapped and distributed uniformly in the matrix of CaCO3 microparticles during crystallization. The hydrophobic fluorescent molecules coumarin and Nile red (NR) are efficiently encapsulated into these composite CD-CaCO3 porous particles through supramolecular inclusion complexation between entrapped CDs and hydrophobic molecules. Thermogravimetric (TGA) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) analysis of composite CD-CaCO3 particles reveals the presence of large CDs and their strong interaction with calcium carbonate nanoparticles. The resulting composite CD-CaCO3 microparticles are utilized as sacrificial templates for preparation of CD-modified layer-by-layer (LbL) capsules. After dissolution of the carbonate core, CDs are retained in the interior of the capsules in a network fashion and assist in the encapsulation of hydrophobic molecules. The efficient encapsulation of the hydrophobic fluorescent dye, coumarin, was successfully demonstrated using CD-modified capsules. In vitro release of the encapsulated coumarin from the CD-CaCO3 and CD-modified capsules has been demonstrated.
