This article describes the ways in which cotton goods were commercialised during the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth. Several national cases are analysed: Britain, as the Workshop of the World; France, Germany, Switzerland and the US, as core economies; and Italy and Spain as countries on the European periphery. The main question that we address is why some cotton industries vertically integrated their production and commercialisation processes, but others did not. We present a model that combines industrial district size and product differentiation to explain why vertical integration was present in most cases and why there was vertical specialisation in Lancashire and Lowell.

Familial status, or presence of children in the home, protects families with children under 18 years of age. Also protected are families seeking custody of a child or expecting the birth of a child. There is only a narrow exception to this part of the law: units designated as “housing for older persons.” Property owners are required by the law to allow reasonable modifications to a property (at the tenant’s expense) and to make reasonable accommodations in policies in order to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities.

Another recently enacted law is the Iowa Safe Schools Law. Effective September 1, 2007, Iowa Code Chapter 280 requires both public and private schools to establish policies prohibiting harassment and bullying against students by employees, school volunteers, or other students. Sexual Orientation and Gender identity are covered under the Safe Schools Law. Students may now seek remedies under both Chapter 216 and Chapter 280.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To test prospective associations between cannabis disorder symptoms/frequency of cannabis use and health issues and to investigate stability versus transience in cannabis use trajectories. DESIGN: Two waves of data collection from the longitudinal Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors (C-SURF). SETTING: A representative sample of young Swiss men in their early 20s from the general population. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 5084 young men (mean age 19.98̴1;±̴1;1.19 years at time 1). MEASUREMENTS: Cannabis use (life-time use, frequency of use, cannabis disorder symptoms) and self-reported measures of health issues (depression, mental/physical health, health consequences) were assessed. Significant changes in cannabis use were tested using t-test/Wilcoxon's rank test for paired data. Cross-lagged panel models provided evidence regarding longitudinal associations between cannabis use and health issues. FINDINGS: Most of the participants (84.5%) remained in the same use category and cannabis use kept to similar levels at times 1 and 2 (P̴1;=̴1;0.114 and1;=̴1;0.755; average of 11;±̴1;2.8 months between times 1 and 2). Cross-lagged panel models showed that cannabis disorder symptoms predicted later health issues (e.g. depression, 46;̴1;=̴1;0.087, P̴1;<̴1;0.001; health consequences, 46;̴1;=̴1;0.045, P̴1;<̴1;0.05). The reverse paths from health issues to cannabis disorder symptoms and the cross-lagged panel model between frequency of cannabis use and health issues were non-significant. CONCLUSIONS: Patterns of cannabis use showed substantial continuity among young Swiss men in their early 20s. The number of symptoms of cannabis use disorder, rather than the frequency of cannabis use, is a clinically important measure of cannabis use among young Swiss men.

SUMMARY : Parasites and sociality in ants This thesis investigates the complex relationships between sociality, defences against parasites and the regulation of social structures. We studied how fungal parasites influenced colony organization, collective defences and social immunity in the ant Formica selysi. We first describe the diversity and prevalence of fungal pathogens associated with ant nests. The richness of fungal parasites community may increase the risk of multiple infections and select for a diversification of anti-parasitic defences in ants. Collective defences are powerful means to combat parasites, but can also increase the risk of disease transmission. Here, we showed that allo-grooming (mutual cleaning) was directed towards every returning individuals, be they contaminated or not. This collective behaviour removed conidia more efficiently than self-grooming but did not improve the survival of contaminated individuals. This suggests that allo-grooming may rather protect the group than cure contaminated individuals. It may also permit "social vaccination" if a contact with contaminated ants protects groomers frorn a second fungal exposure. Social transfer of immunity is an emerging theme in insect immunology. Here, we showed that ants in contact with an ant from a different genetic lineage had a higher disease resistance. We also found that naïve ants had a higher resistance after a contact with an immunized ant. This suggests that a transfer of resistance is possible and that "social vaccination" may improve the resistance of the group. However, it remains unclear whether repeated exposure to parasites may also increase the resistance of infected individuals themselves. lmmune memory in invertebrates is still debated. We tested whether immune priming against fungal parasite arose in ants and whether it was strain-specific. We found no evidence of immune priming. Naïve and immunized ants had a similar survival when infected. Together with our previous results, this suggests that ants have evolved efficient collective anti-fungal defences but that these defences aim at protecting the group rather than the contaminated individuals. ln colonies of our study population, there is a strong variation in the number of breeders. This is associated with important changes in life-history traits like demography or queen and worker body size. In the second part of the thesis, we investigated how social structures evolved and were maintained. We showed that queens from monogyne and polygyne colonies were able to found new colonies both alone or in association. We also found that there was no difference between monogyne and polygyne colonies in the acceptance of additional queens. These results suggest that a high plasticity has been maintained in this population, which may permit to adapt rapidly to changing environmental conditions. RESUME : Parasites et socialité chez les fourmis Durant cette thèse, nous avons étudié comment la socialité apporte de nouvelles réponses a des problèmes complexes telle que la défense contre les parasites ou l'organisation de la vie en groupe. Nous avons choisi comme modèle la fourmi Formica selysi et ses champignons pathogènes. Nous avons d'abord montré que la diversité et la prévalence de champignons pathogènes associés aux nids de fourmis étaient très élees. Cela a pu pousser les fourmis à diversifier le champ de leur défenses anti-parasitaires afin d'éviter les infections multiples, La socialité a en particulier permis l'évolution de défenses collectives qui pourraient être plus efficaces que les défenses individuelles. Nous nous sommes donc intéressés de plus près aux défenses collectives et avons étudié quels en étaient les coûts et les bénéfices pour le groupe et pour ses membres. Nous avons trouvé que les fourmis nettoyaient tous les individus entrant dans la colonie, qu'ils soient contaminés ou non. Cela permettait d'ôter plus de spores que le nettoyage individuel et n'augmentait pas la transmission de maladie. Cependant, le nettoyage mutuel n'augmentait pas non plus la survie des individus contaminés. ll se pourrait donc que ce comportement serve plutôt a éviter une dissémination de la maladie qu'à soigner les individus contaminés. Le nettoyage mutuel pourrait aussi permettre aux individus sains d'avoir un premier contact non-létal avec un parasite et d'être vaccinés contre une future exposition. Cette hypothèse a été soutenue par une expérience dans laquelle nous avons montré que le contact avec une fourmi immunisée permettait d'augmenter la résistance d'individus naïfs. Les fourmis avaient aussi une meilleure résistance lorsqu'elles étaient en contact avec une fourmi provenant d'une autre lignée génétique. Cette "vaccination sociale" pourrait permettre d'une part d'augmenter le nombre d'espèce de parasites contre lesquelles le groupe serait protégé et d'autre part de faire l'économie d'autres défenses individuelles telles que la réponse immunitaire. Nous avons testé si les fourmis étaient elles-mêmes "vaccinées", c'est-à-dire, si elles exprimaient une mémoire immunitaire après un premier contact avec un champignon parasite. Nous n'avons trouvé aucune différence de survie entre les individus naïfs et immunisés ce qui suggère les fourmis favorisent d'autres défenses que la mémoire immunitaire contre les champignons entomopathogènes. Cela suggère également que les comportements coopératifs anti-parasitaires pourraient compléter, voire remplacer les défenses individuelles. La socialité telle qu'elle est pratiquée par les fourmis pose un autre problème de poids qui est celui de savoir combien d'individus se reproduisent. En effet, si les ouvrières sont stériles, le nombre de reines assurant la reproduction peut varier considérablement. Dans la population de E sebrsi étudiée, les colonies monogynes (une reine) co-existent avec des colonies polygynes (plusieurs reines) dans le même habitat. Nous nous sommes demandés si ces structures sociales étaient fixes ou si un changement de l'une à l'autre était possible. Pour cela nous avons comparé la fondation de nouvelles colonies par les jeunes reines issues de colonies monogynes et polygynes. Nous avons également observé si l'acceptation de nouvelles reines était possible dans les deux types de colonies. Nous n'avons trouvé aucune différence entre les deux types de colonies. Cela suggère qu'un changement est possible et que l'évolution des structures sociales est un processus dynamique. Cela pourrait être dû à l'habitat particulièrement changeant dans lequel se trouve notre population qui exigerait d'être capable de s'adapter très rapidement a de nouvelles conditions.

In the administration, planning, design, and maintenance of road systems, transportation professionals often need to choose between alternatives, justify decisions, evaluate tradeoffs, determine how much to spend, set priorities, assess how well the network meets traveler needs, and communicate the basis for their actions to others. A variety of technical guidelines, tools, and methods have been developed to help with these activities. Such work aids include design criteria guidelines, design exception analysis methods, needs studies, revenue allocation schemes, regional planning guides, designation of minimum standards, sufficiency ratings, management systems, point based systems to determine eligibility for paving, functional classification, and bridge ratings. While such tools play valuable roles, they also manifest a number of deficiencies and are poorly integrated. Design guides tell what solutions MAY be used, they aren't oriented towards helping find which one SHOULD be used. Design exception methods help justify deviation from design guide requirements but omit consideration of important factors. Resource distribution is too often based on dividing up what's available rather than helping determine how much should be spent. Point systems serve well as procedural tools but are employed primarily to justify decisions that have already been made. In addition, the tools aren't very scalable: a system level method of analysis seldom works at the project level and vice versa. In conjunction with the issues cited above, the operation and financing of the road and highway system is often the subject of criticisms that raise fundamental questions: What is the best way to determine how much money should be spent on a city or a county's road network? Is the size and quality of the rural road system appropriate? Is too much or too little money spent on road work? What parts of the system should be upgraded and in what sequence? Do truckers receive a hidden subsidy from other motorists? Do transportation professions evaluate road situations from too narrow of a perspective? In considering the issues and questions the author concluded that it would be of value if one could identify and develop a new method that would overcome the shortcomings of existing methods, be scalable, be capable of being understood by the general public, and utilize a broad viewpoint. After trying out a number of concepts, it appeared that a good approach would be to view the road network as a sub-component of a much larger system that also includes vehicles, people, goods-in-transit, and all the ancillary items needed to make the system function. Highway investment decisions could then be made on the basis of how they affect the total cost of operating the total system. A concept, named the "Total Cost of Transportation" method, was then developed and tested. The concept rests on four key principles: 1) that roads are but one sub-system of a much larger 'Road Based Transportation System', 2) that the size and activity level of the overall system are determined by market forces, 3) that the sum of everything expended, consumed, given up, or permanently reserved in building the system and generating the activity that results from the market forces represents the total cost of transportation, and 4) that the economic purpose of making road improvements is to minimize that total cost. To test the practical value of the theory, a special database and spreadsheet model of Iowa's county road network was developed. This involved creating a physical model to represent the size, characteristics, activity levels, and the rates at which the activities take place, developing a companion economic cost model, then using the two in tandem to explore a variety of issues. Ultimately, the theory and model proved capable of being used in full system, partial system, single segment, project, and general design guide levels of analysis. The method appeared to be capable of remedying many of the existing work method defects and to answer society's transportation questions from a new perspective.

The dramatic rise in fuel prices and growing environmental concerns are pressing freight transportation companies to pursue new systems and methods to improve fuel efficiency and reduce their environmental impact. While select major carriers appear to be leading efforts to adopt technologies that support a dramatic improvement in fuel performance, there appears to be little understanding as to the breadth and depth of efforts being taken by the broader motor carrier community, consisting of over 20,000 companies of all sizes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of adoption of technologies and policies to support improved fuel efficiency among motor carrier fleets.

This is a study of how transportation policy can be fashioned to improve Iowa's long-term economic prospects. The research focuses on the state level and covers pricing, resource allocation, investment, and other issues that directly affect the performance of public facilities that support transportation of goods and people to and from points in Iowa. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 begins with an assessment of how Iowa's economy is changing, both functionally and spatially. Commuting patterns and methods of goods movement are then discussed. The purpose of this analysis is to provide a context for the exploration of transportation policy issues in subsequent chapters. In Chapter 3 a framework is established for evaluating changes in transportation policies. A working definition of economic development is given and the role of government policies in making an area more attractive to economic activity is considered. Chapter 4 analyzes public policy options for Iowa's roads and highways. These policy options are intended to help the state compete for economic activity. Chapter 5 assesses alternative investment strategies for major navigational facilities on the upper Mississippi River. Chapter 6 examines major transportation policy issues in Iowa's agricultural sector. The current magnitude of agricultural shipments and the roles of several modes are presented. After focusing on issues related to railroad competitiveness, the analysis turns to how Iowa's rural roads should be financed. The need for joint investment and pricing decisions affecting waterways, railroads, and rural roads is stressed. Chapter 7 examines the current status of freight transportation in Iowa. An assessment is made of issues related to trucking and of intermodal transportation and its potential for cost-effective shipping to and from businesses in Iowa. Chapter 8 summarizes the key findings of this study, offering ten recommendations. These recommendations relate to transportation as a means of facilitating economic development.

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää kuinka moninaisuus ja sen johtaminen näkyvät voittoa tavoittelemattoman järjestön tiimityössä, kuinka moninaisuus ja tiimityö pystyvät selittämään motiiveja työskennellä voittoa tavoittelemattomassa järjestössä ja mitä tulisi huomioida tiimityön ja tiimin johtajuuden osalta, kun moninaisuus ja voittoa tavoittelemattoman järjestön luonne otetaan huomioon. Tämä tutkielma on laadullinen tutkimus, jossa tutkimusmenetelminä on käytetty yhdeksää teemahaastattelua, edellisen tutkimuksen tuloksia (Astikainen, 2005) sekä havainnointia. Tutkimuksen perusteellavoidaan todeta, että voittoa tavoittelemattoman järjestön luonne, tiimityö tai moninaisuus eivät sinällään merkitse paljoakaan tulosten kannalta, vaan niiden keskinäiset yhteydet. Nämä yhdessä, oikein hyödynnettynä, vaikuttavat työntekijöiden motivaatioon ja sitä kautta organisaation tuloksiin.

We propose a new approach and related indicators for globally distributed software support and development based on a 3-year process improvement project in a globally distributed engineering company. The company develops, delivers and supports a complex software system with tailored hardware components and unique end-customer installations. By applying the domain knowledge from operations management on lead time reduction and its multiple benefits to process performance, the workflows of globally distributed software development and multitier support processes were measured and monitored throughout the company. The results show that the global end-to-end process visibility and centrally managed reporting at all levels of the organization catalyzed a change process toward significantly better performance. Due to the new performance indicators based on lead times and their variation with fixed control procedures, the case company was able to report faster bug-fixing cycle times, improved response times and generally better customer satisfaction in its global operations. In all, lead times to implement new features and to respond to customer issues and requests were reduced by 50%.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of business exits on future dimensions of entrepreneurial activity at the macroeconomic level. Design/methodology/approach: This research uses the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) data for 41 countries and the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to carry out the analysis. The paper differentiates the effect of the two components of total entrepreneurial activity, and the two motivations for it – opportunity and necessity entrepreneurship. Findings: The results presented here show a positive and significant effect of the coefficient associated with exits in all models. This means that the levels of entrepreneurial activity exceed business exits. The robustness of the models are tested, including other variables such as the fear of failure, the Gross Domestic Product, role models, entrepreneurial skills and the unemployment variables. The main hypothesis which stated that at national level business exits imply greater rates of opportunity-driven entrepreneurship is corroborated. Originality/value: One would expect that unemployment rates would imply higher levels of necessity entrepreneurship. However, results show that unemployment rates do in fact favour opportunity entrepreneurship levels. This could be due to those government policies that are aimed at promoting entrepreneurship through the capitalization of unemployment to be totally invested in a new start-up. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first panel data study to link previous exit rates to future dimensions of entrepreneurial activity.
