Fractal image compression is a relatively recent image compression method, which is simple to use and often leads to a high compression ratio. These advantages make it suitable for the situation of a single encoding and many decoding, as required in video on demand, archive compression, etc. There are two fundamental fractal compression methods, namely, the cube-based and the frame-based methods, being commonly studied. However, there are advantages and disadvantages in both methods. This paper gives an extension of the fundamental compression methods based on the concept of adaptive partition. Experimental results show that the algorithms based on adaptive partition may obtain a much higher compression ratio compared to algorithms based on fixed partition while maintaining the quality of decompressed images.

A queue manager (QM) is a core traffic management (TM) function used to provide per-flow queuing in access andmetro networks; however current designs have limited scalability. An on-demand QM (OD-QM) which is part of a new modular field-programmable gate-array (FPGA)-based TM is presented that dynamically maps active flows to the available physical resources; its scalability is derived from exploiting the observation that there are only a few hundred active flows in a high speed network. Simulations with real traffic show that it is a scalable, cost-effective approach that enhances per-flow queuing performance, thereby allowing per-flow QM without the need for extra external memory at speeds up to 10 Gbps. It utilizes 2.3%–16.3% of a Xilinx XC5VSX50t FPGA and works at 111 MHz.

We describe, for the first time, stimuli-responsive hydrogel-forming microneedle (MN) arrays that enable delivery of a clinically-relevant model drug (ibuprofen) upon application of light. MN arrays were prepared using a polymer prepared from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) by micromolding. The obtained MN arrays showed good mechanical properties. The system was loaded with up to 5% (w/w) ibuprofen included in a light-responsive 3,5-dimethoxybenzoin conjugate. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the conjugate inside the polymeric MN matrix. In vitro, this system was able to deliver up to three doses of 50 mg of ibuprofen upon application of an optical trigger over a prolonged period of time (up to 160 hours). This makes the system appealing as a controlled release device for prolonged periods of time. We believe that this technology has potential for use in ?on-demand? delivery of a wide range of drugs in a variety of applications relevant to enhanced patient care.

The report addresses the question of what are the preferences of broadband consumers on the Portuguese telecommunication market. A triple play bundle is being investigated. The discrete choice analysis, adopted in the study, base on 110 responses, mainly from NOVA students. The data for the analysis was collected via manually designed on-line survey. The results show that the price attribute is relatively the most important one while the television attribute is being overlooked in the decision making process. Main effects examined in the research are robust. In addition, "extras" components are being tested in terms of users' preferences.

El fulgor de las redes sociales, Facebook y Twitter, en el año 2013 ha llevado a múltiples análisis investigativos en estudios de comunicación a nivel de maestría; debido, en más de una forma, a las victorias conseguidas en el plano de la interactividad comunicativa sustentadas en los principios de libertad humana, propios de la democracia. Al reconocer al sujeto como decidor, hablamos de la libertad para seleccionar, pertenecer, y participar, formando redes de afiliación y amistad basadas en las conexiones físicas. Así, busco conocer cuál es el grado de interactividad de las redes sociales en la difusión del video online. El inicio de la comunicación moderna impulsada por la prensa bajo un formato de oferta de información derivó en la aplicación de prácticas comunicacionales semejantes en el medio televisivo, pero cuando los medios iniciaron la producción de contenidos en la web, la lógica del emisor-canal-receptor se transformó hacia una bidireccionalidad múltiple. En este punto, a partir de un método cuantitativo, cuestiono el establecimiento de un diálogo con el usuario y entre usuarios generado por las publicaciones en Facebook y Twitter de cibermedios como TerraTV, CaracolTV y Ecuavisa, identificados por la distribución de contenido en formato de video on demand con carácter noticioso. Con el posicionamiento de internet en la esfera mediática la formación de las redes humanas físicas se virtualizaron, haciendo que cada uno de los nodos de la sociedad red ofrezca sus dosis de innovación al sistema, agregando valor e impulsando el capital social. Likes, fan pages, share, tuits, comentarios y clicks han llevado a todos los medios de comunicación a mantener conexiones con las redes sociales. En el caso de Ecuador, indago si Ecuavisa está empleando todas las potencialidades ofrecidas por la arquitectura de Facebook y Twitter para desarrollar una conversación entre sus fans. Con estudios de casos de 182 post y tuits producidos en Facebook y Twitter por los cibermedios seleccionados durante la elección del papa en marzo 2013, se compara el grado de adecuación a la interactividad en la difusión del video online, tras la implementación de un modelo de medición adaptado al test de dinamismo. CaracolTV se configura, entre los representantes de Brasil, Colombia y Ecuador, como el cibermedio con mayor grado de interactividad en una escala de 70 puntos.

Media content distribution on-demand becomes more complex when performed on a mass scale involving various channels with distinct and dynamic network characteristics, and, deploying a variety of terminal devices offering a wide range of capabilities. It is practically impossible to create and prepackage various static versions of the same content to match all the varying demand parameters of clients for various contexts. In this paper we present a profiling management approach for dynamically personalised media content delivery on-demand integrated with the AXMEDIS Framework. The client profiles comprise the representation of User, Device, Network and Context of content delivery based on MPEG-21:DIA. Although the most challenging proving ground for this personalised content delivery has been the mobile testbed i.e. the distribution to mobile handsets, the framework described here can be deployed for disribution, by the AXMEDIS PnP module, through other channels e.g. satellite, Internet to a range of client terminals e.g. desktops, kiosks, IPtv and other terrminals whose baseline terminal capabilities can be made availabe by the manufacturers as is normal.
