We discuss here a semiconductors assembly comprising of titanium dioxide (TiO2) rods sensitized by cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals for potential applications in large area electronics on three dimensional (3-D) substrates. Vertically aligned TiO2 rods are grown on a substrate using a 150 degrees C process flow and then sensitized with CdS by SILAR method at room temperature. This structure forms an effective photoconductor as the photo-generated electrons are rapidly removed from the CdS via the TiO2 thereby permitting a hole rich CdS. Current-voltage characteristics are measured and models illustrate space charge limited photo-current as the mechanism of charge transport at moderate voltage bias. The stable assembly and high speed are achieved. The frequency response with a loading of 10 pF and 9 M Omega shows a half power frequency of 100 Hz. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Several mathematical models are available for estimation of effective thermal conductivity of nonreactive packed beds. Keeping in view the salient differences between metal hydride beds in which chemisorption of hydrogen takes place and conventional nonreactive packed beds, modified models are proposed here to predict the effective thermal conductivity. Variation in properties such as solid thermal conductivity and porosity during hydrogen absorption and desorption processes are incorporated. These extended models have been applied to simulate the effective thermal conductivity of the MmNi(4.5)Al(0.5) hydride bed and are compared with the experimental results. Applicability of the extended models for estimation of the effective thermal conductivity at different operating conditions such as pressure, temperature, and hydrogen concentration is discussed.

Applications of hydriding materials for solid state hydrogen storage, hydrogen compression, thermal energy storage and sorption heating and cooling systems have been demonstrated successfully. However, the performance of these devices significantly depends upon heat and mass transfer characteristics of the reactive packed beds. One of the important parameters regulating heat and mass transfer in the hydriding bed is its effective thermal conductivity (ETC), which is dependent on several operating parameters such as pressure and temperature. ETC also varies significantly due to the variation of hydrogen concentration during the hydriding and dehydriding processes. Based on the extensive studies done by the authors on ETC of metal hydride beds, a review of experimental methods, mathematical studies and augmentation techniques is presented in this paper, with emphasis on the effects of operating parameters on ETC. In a vertically oscillating circular cylindrical container, singular perturbation theory of two-time scale expansions was developed in inviscid fluids to investigate the motion of single free surface standing wave including the effect of surface tension.
Resumo:
In a vertically oscillating circular cylindrical container, singular perturbation theory of two-time scale expansions is developed in weakly viscous fluids to investigate the motion of single free surface standing wave by linearizing the Navier-Stokes equation. The fluid field is divided into an outer potential flow region and an inner boundary layer region. The solutions of both two regions are obtained and a linear amplitude equation incorporating damping term and external excitation is derived. The condition to appear stable surface wave is obtained and the critical curve is determined. In addition, an analytical expression of damping coefficient is determined. Finally, the dispersion relation, which has been derived from the inviscid fluid approximation, is modified by adding linear damping. It is found that the modified results are reasonably closer to experimental results than former theory. Result shows that when forcing frequency is low, the viscosity of the fluid is prominent for the mode selection. However, when forcing frequency is high, the surface tension of the fluid is prominent.
A quantum dot sensitized solar cell based on vertically aligned carbon nanotube templated ZnO arrays
Resumo:
We report on a quantum dot sensitized solar cell (QDSSC) based on ZnO nanorod coated vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the electron lifetime for the device based on VACNT/ZnO/CdSe is longer than that for a device based on ZnO/CdSe, indicating that the charge recombination at the interface is reduced by the presence of the VACNTs. Due to the increased surface area and longer electron lifetime, a power conversion efficiency of 1.46% is achieved for the VACNT/ZnO/CdSe devices under an illumination of one Sun (AM 1.5G, 100 mW/cm2). © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

The integration of high yield, uniform and preferential growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNT) on low stress micromechanical structures was analyzed. A combination of electron-beam crosslinked surface micromachining and direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of electric field aligned carbon nanotubes was used for the analysis. The selective placement of high yield and uniform VACNTs on a partially suspended Ni/SiO2/Ti microstructure was also demonstrated.
