A combination of modelling and analysis techniques was used to design a six component force balance. The balance was designed specifically for the measurement of impulsive aerodynamic forces and moments characteristic of hypervelocity shock tunnel testing using the stress wave force measurement technique. Aerodynamic modelling was used to estimate the magnitude and distribution of forces and finite element modelling to determine the mechanical response of proposed balance designs. Simulation of balance performance was based on aerodynamic loads and mechanical responses using convolution techniques. Deconvolution was then used to assess balance performance and to guide further design modifications leading to the final balance design. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The performance of the Oxford University Gun Tunnel has been estimated using a quasi-one-dimensional simulation of the facility gas dynamics. The modelling of the actual facility area variations so as to adequately simulate both shock reflection and flow discharge processes has been considered in some detail. Test gas stagnation pressure and temperature histories are compared with measurements at two different operating conditions - one with nitrogen and the other with carbon dioxide as the test gas. It is demonstrated that both the simulated pressures and temperatures are typically within 3% of the experimental measurements.

This paper attempts a state-of-the-art summary of research into thunderstorm wind fields from an engineering perspective. The characteristics of thunderstorms and the two extreme wind events-tornadoes and downbursts-spawn by thunderstorms are described. The significant differences from traditional boundary layer flows are highlighted. The importance of thunderstorm gusts in the worldwide database of extreme wind events is established. Physical simulations of tornadoes and downbursts are described and discussed leading to the recommendation that Wind Engineering needs to focus more resources on the fundamental issue - What is the flow structure in the strongest winds? © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Experiments to investigate the transition process in hypervelocity boundary layers were performed in the T4 free-piston shock tunnel. An array of thin-film heat-transfer gauges was used to detect the location and extent of the transitional region on a 1500 mm long x 120 turn wide flat plate, which formed one of the walls of a duct. The experiments were performed in a Mach 6 flow of air with 6- and 12-MJ/kg nozzle-supply enthalpies at unit Reynolds numbers ranging from 1.6 x 10(6) to 4.9 x 10(6) m(-1). The results show that the characteristics typical of transition taking place through the initiation, growth, and merger of turbulent spots are evident in the heat-transfer signals. A 2-mm-high excrescence located 440 turn from the leading edge was found to be capable of generating a turbulent wedge within an otherwise laminar boundary layer at a unit Reynolds number of 2.6 x 10(6) m(-1) at the 6-MJ/kg condition. A tripping strip, located 100 mm from the leading edge and consisting of a line 37 teeth of 2 rum height equally spaced and spanning the test surface, was also found to be capable of advancing the transition location at the same condition and at the higher enthalpy condition.

A model describing coherent quantum tunnelling between two trapped Bose-Einstein condensates is discussed. It is not well known that the model admits an exact solution, obtained some time ago, with the energy spectrum derived through the algebraic Bethe ansatz. An asymptotic analysis of the Bethe ansatz equations leads us to explicit expressions for the energies of the ground and the first excited states in the limit of weak tunnelling and all energies for strong tunnelling. The results are used to extract the asymptotic limits of the quantum fluctuations of the boson number difference between the two Bose-Einstein condensates and to characterize the degree of coherence in the system.

In this paper we present a technique for visualising hierarchical and symmetric, multimodal fitness functions that have been investigated in the evolutionary computation literature. The focus of this technique is on landscapes in moderate-dimensional, binary spaces (i.e., fitness functions defined over {0, 1}(n), for n less than or equal to 16). The visualisation approach involves an unfolding of the hyperspace into a two-dimensional graph, whose layout represents the topology of the space using a recursive relationship, and whose shading defines the shape of the cost surface defined on the space. Using this technique we present case-study explorations of three fitness functions: royal road, hierarchical-if-and-only-if (H-IFF), and hierarchically decomposable functions (HDF). The visualisation approach provides an insight into the properties of these functions, particularly with respect to the size and shape of the basins of attraction around each of the local optima.

At the close of the Wars of the Roses, a new dynasty was founded by a man lacking a prince’s education; moreover, his weak claim to the throne of England gave rise to a set of serious problems. These two crucial, interrelated elements are central in Francis Bacon’s biographical account of Henry VII. The literal road leading Richmond from exile to victory in Bosworth Field, in 1485, is eventually transformed into a metaphoric path that prefigures the long, deep process of learning undertaken during his 24-year reign. This fundamental process carried out by the king will be approached mainly through the passages focused on the Lambert Simnell/Perkin Warbeck affairs, the most difficult probelms the monarch had to face in a time and in a kingdom of many uncertainties. The Simnell/Warbeck menaces embodied Henry Tudor’s greatest dilemmas, continually emphasised in Bacon’s work – the essence of legitimacy and the essence of royalty.

Low noise surfaces have been increasingly considered as a viable and cost-effective alternative to acoustical barriers. However, road planners and administrators frequently lack information on the correlation between the type of road surface and the resulting noise emission profile. To address this problem, a method to identify and classify different types of road pavements was developed, whereby near field road noise is analyzed using statistical learning methods. The vehicle rolling sound signal near the tires and close to the road surface was acquired by two microphones in a special arrangement which implements the Close-Proximity method. A set of features, characterizing the properties of the road pavement, was extracted from the corresponding sound profiles. A feature selection method was used to automatically select those that are most relevant in predicting the type of pavement, while reducing the computational cost. A set of different types of road pavement segments were tested and the performance of the classifier was evaluated. Results of pavement classification performed during a road journey are presented on a map, together with geographical data. This procedure leads to a considerable improvement in the quality of road pavement noise data, thereby increasing the accuracy of road traffic noise prediction models.

This study explores a large set of OC and EC measurements in PM(10) and PM(2.5) aerosol samples, undertaken with a long term constant analytical methodology, to evaluate the capability of the OC/EC minimum ratio to represent the ratio between the OC and EC aerosol components resulting from fossil fuel combustion (OC(ff)/EC(ff)). The data set covers a wide geographical area in Europe, but with a particular focus upon Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, and includes a great variety of sites: urban (background, kerbside and tunnel), industrial, rural and remote. The highest minimum ratios were found in samples from remote and rural sites. Urban background sites have shown spatially and temporally consistent minimum ratios, of around 1.0 for PM(10) and 0.7 for PM(2.5).The consistency of results has suggested that the method could be used as a tool to derive the ratio between OC and EC from fossil fuel combustion and consequently to differentiate OC from primary and secondary sources. To explore this capability, OC and EC measurements were performed in a busy roadway tunnel in central Lisbon. The OC/EC ratio, which reflected the composition of vehicle combustion emissions, was in the range of 03-0.4. Ratios of OC/EC in roadside increment air (roadside minus urban background) in Birmingham, UK also lie within the range 03-0.4. Additional measurements were performed under heavy traffic conditions at two double kerbside sites located in the centre of Lisbon and Madrid. The OC/EC minimum ratios observed at both sites were found to be between those of the tunnel and those of urban background air, suggesting that minimum values commonly obtained for this parameter in open urban atmospheres over-predict the direct emissions of OC(ff) from road transport. Prémio - CEN/TC 287 AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN INSIRE 2012 Implementation of the INSPIRE Directive on Road Infrastructure in Portugal Inês Soares, aluna de Mestrado em engenharia civil do ISEL, Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa e Paulo Martins, e o seu orientador, receberam um prémio europeu, no dia 27 de junho, em Istambul na Turquia, numa conferência internacional organizada pela Comissão Europeia e pelo governo Turco.  A jovem portuguesa foi escolhida entre cerca de 20 candidatos de vários países. Paulo Matos Martins, professor no ISEL, além de mentor do trabalho premiado, foi orientador de mestrado da aluna e explica que se trata de um estudo sobre a aplicação da Diretiva comunitária INSPIRE à infraestrutura rodoviária nacional que contou com a estreita colaboração do InIR, Instituto da Infraestrutura Rodoviária através da coorientação da engenheira Adelaide Costa e colaboração técnica do engenheiro Rui Luso Soares.  O projeto-piloto correspondeu à criação de uma aplicação informática que permite aceder a informação geográfica harmonizada relativa à infraestrutura rodoviária nacional, de acordo com as disposições de execução INSPIRE, dando cumprimento aos requisitos impostos pela Diretiva às entidades responsáveis por este tipo de informação, entre as quais se incluem diversos organismos públicos (podendo no futuro vir a incluir as autarquias), permitindo aos decisores políticos e a todos os cidadãos o fácil acesso a informação de qualidade sobre as infraestruturas, o território e o ambiente.

Um túnel é uma obra subterrânea dimensionada com o objetivo de satisfazer diversas necessidades num mundo onde o planeamento urbano e a gestão de espaços ganha cada vez mais importância. A execução de este género de obras de engenharia pode ter várias finalidades, que podem ir desde a construção/reabilitação de redes de saneamento, abastecimento de água ou gás (túneis de pequeno diâmetro) até à construção/modernização de redes pedonais, rodoviárias ou ferroviárias, galerias mineiras, tuneis para barragens, etc. (túneis de grande diâmetro). As tuneladoras são uma das ferramentas de desmonte mais utilizadas na execução de obras subterrâneas. Existem no mercado vários tipos de máquinas tuneladoras, a sua escolha e dimensionamento depende de diversos fatores que devem ser cuidadosamente analisados, nomeadamente tipo de terreno a escavar, presença ou não de água na zona de escavação, dureza e/ou abrasividade das formações a atravessar, etc. Será feita uma abordagem aos princípios de funcionamento de este tipo de equipamentos, indicando o seu campo de aplicação dentro da respetiva tecnologia de escavação onde se inserem. Finalmente será desenvolvido o caso da empreitada: “Execução da Travessia do Rio Ave, da Estação Elevatória de Vila do Conde e dos Sistemas Elevatória da Aguçadoura e da Apúlia 4 - AR 44.0.08”, onde em alternativa ao desvio provisório do Rio Ave em Vila do Conde foi projetada a execução de duas travessias no diâmetro 1200 mm, uma delas escavadas maioritariamente em terreno aluvionar brando e a outra em terreno rochoso duro e abrasivo com recurso, em ambos casos, à utilização de máquina tuneladora. Através da avaliação do desempenho do equipamento escolhido para execução de este trabalho será estudada a eficiência da utilização deste tipo de equipamento. Com o objetivo de mostrar os custos associados à execução de obras de escavação subterrânea com recurso a utilização de máquinas tuneladoras, será feita uma análise económica e comparativa relativa aos dois casos de obra apresentados.
