The photon statistics of the random laser emission of a Rhodamine B doped di-ureasil hybrid powder is investigated to evaluate its degree of coherence above threshold. Although the random laser emission is a weighted average of spatially uncorrelated radiation emitted at different positions in the sample, a spatial coherence control was achieved due to an improved detection configuration based on spatial filtering. By using this experimental approach, which also allows for fine mode discrimination and timeresolved analysis of uncoupled modes from mode competition, an area not larger than the expected coherence size of the random laser is probed. Once the spectral and temporal behavior of nonoverlapping modes is characterized, an assessment of the photon-number probability distribution and the resulting second-order correlation coefficient as a function of time delay and wavelength was performed. The outcome of our single photon counting measurements revealed a high degree of temporal coherence at the time of maximum pump intensity and at wavelengths around the Rhodamine B gain maximum.

An Australian natural zeolite was collected, characterised and employed for basic dye adsorption in aqueous solution. The natural zeolite is mainly composed of clinoptiloite, quartz and mordenite and has cation-exchange capacity of 120 meq/100 g. The natural zeolite presents higher adsorption capacity for methylene blue than rhodamine B with the maximal adsorption capacity of 2.8 x 10(-5) and 7.9 x 10(-5) Mot/g at 50 degrees C for rhodamine B and methylene blue, respectively. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption followed the pseudo second-order kinetics and could be described as two-stage diffusion process. The adsorption isotherm could be fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic calculations showed that the adsorption is endothermic process with Delta H degrees at 2.0 and 8.7 kJ/mol for rhodamine B and methylene blue. It has also found that the regenerated zeolites by high-temperature calcination and Fenton oxidation showed similar adsorption capacity but lower than the fresh sample. Only 60% capacity could be recovered by the two regeneration techniques. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Adsorptions of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Basic Blue 9 (BB9, also known as methylene blue) by sugarcane bagasse of different surface areas were compared in this study. There was a small gain in the amount of dye removed by increasing bagasse surface area from 0.57 m2/g to 1.81 m2/g. BB9 adsorption was less sensitive to surface area change than RhB adsorption. Adsorption capacity of 250 mg/L RhB on 1 g/L bagasse was 65.5 mg/g compared to a value of 30.7 mg/g obtained with BB9 under the same conditions. Increasing adsorption temperature (from 30 °C to 50 °C) while having no effect on RhB adsorption, slightly decreased BB9 adsorption by ~4%. The differences in adsorption performances between these dyes have been related to the molecular structure of the dyes and the surface chemistry of bagasse.

Fabrication of multilayer ultrathin composite films composed of nanosized titanium dioxide particles (P25, Degussa) and polyelectrolytes (PELs), such as poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS), on glass substrates using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique and its potentia application for the photodegradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has been reported. The polyelectrolytes and TiO2 were deposited on glass substrates at pH 2.5 and the growth of the multilayers was studied using UV/vis speccrophotometer. Thicknes measurements of the films showed a linear increase in film thickness with increase in number of bilayers. The surface microstructure of the thin films was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope. The ability of the catalysts immobilized by this technique was compared with TiO2 films prepared by drop casting and spin coating methods. Comparison has been made in terms of film stability and photodegradation of rhodamine B. Process variables such as the effect of surface area of the multilayers, umber of bilayers, and initial dye concentration on photodegradation of rhodamine B were studied. Degradation efficiency increased with increase in number of catalysts (total surface area) and bilayers. Kinetics analysis indicated that the photodegradation rates follow first order kinetics. Under maximum loading of TiO2, with five catalyst slides having 20 bilayers of polyelectrolyte/TiO2 on each, 100 mL of 10 mg/L dye solution could be degraded completely in 4 h. The same slides could be reused with the same efficiency for several cycles. This study demonstrates that nanoparticles can be used in wastewater treatment using a simple immobilization technique. This makes the process an attractive option for scale up.

The ultrasonic degradation of two dyes, Rhodamine B (C28H31ClN2O3) and Rhodamine Blue (C28H32N2O3), were studied in the absence of catalyst and in the presence of two catalysts (combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2. The rate of degradation of catalyzed reaction was higher than that obtained with in the absence of the catalysts. Among the catalysts, combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 degraded the dyes faster when compared to the degradation with commercial Degussa P-25 catalyst. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model was developed and the kinetic rate parameters were determined. The effect of other operating parameters, such as initial concentration, pH, temperature, and power intensity, was also investigated. The degradation rate increased with decreasing pH, increasing temperature, and higher intensity.

Sensing and photocatalysis of textile industry effluents such as dyes using mesoporous anatase titania nanowires are discussed here.Spectroscopic investigations show that the titania nanowires preferentially sense cationic (e.g. Methylene Blue, Rhodamine B) over anionic (e.g. Orange G, Remazol Brilliant Blue R) dyes. The adsorbed dye concentration on titania nanowires increased with increase in nanowire dimensions and dye solution pH. Electrochemical sensing directly corroborated spectroscopic findings. Electrochemical detection sensitivity for Methylene Blue increased by more than two times in magnitude with tripling of nanowire average length. Photodegradation of Methylene Blue using titania nanowires is also more efficient than the commercial P25-TiO2 nanopowders. Keeping illumination protocol and observation times constant, the Methylene Blue concentration in solution decreased by only 50% in case of P25-TiO2 nanoparticles compared to a 100% decrease for titania nanowires. Photodegradation was also found to be function of exposure times and dye solution pH.Excellent sensing ability and photocatalytic activity of the titania nanowires is attributed to increased effective reaction area of the controlled nanostructured morphology. Eu3+-activated layered BiOCl phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method at relatively low temperature and shorter duration (400 degrees C for 1 h). All the samples were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with the space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies confirmed the plate-like morphology. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescent D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The electric dipole transition located at 620 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 594 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). The evaluated Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors were close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ and Y2O2S:Eu3+ red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition probability (A(tot)), radiative lifetime (tau(rad)), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau(rad)) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The experimental decay curves of the D-5(0) level in Eu3+-activated BiOCl have a single exponential profile. In comparison with other Eu3+ doped materials, Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors have a long lifetime (tau(exp)), low non-radiative relaxation rate (W-NR), high quantum efficiency (eta) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau(rad)). The determined radiative properties revealed the usefulness of Eu3+-activated BiOCl in developing red lasers as well as optical display devices. Further, these samples showed efficient photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye under visible light irradiation. These photocatalysts are useful for the removal of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in water.

Stolzite polymorph of PbWO4 catalyst was prepared by the facile room temperature precipitation method. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld analysis using powder X-ray data. PbWO4 was crystallized in the scheelite-type tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed leaf like morphology. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit broad blue emission (425 nm) under the excitation of 356 nm. The photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue, Rhodamine B and Methyl orange dyes were measured under visible illumination. The 100% dye degradation was observed for MB and RhB dyes within 60 and 105 min. The rate constant was found to be in the decreasing order of MB > RhB > MO which followed the 1st order kinetic mechanism. Therefore, PbWO4 can be a potential candidate for blue component in white LEDs and also acts as a catalyst for the treatment of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in water. To harvest solar energy more efficiently, novel Ag2S/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions were synthesized by a hydrothermal route. This novel photocatalyst was synthesized by impregnating Ag2S into a Bi2WO6 semiconductor by a hydrothermal route without any surfactants or templates. The as prepared structures were characterized by multiple techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL). The characterization results suggest mesoporous hierarchical spherical structures with a high surface area and improved photo response in the visible spectrum. Compared to bare Bi2WO6, Ag2S/Bi2WO6 exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of dye Rhodamine B (RhB). Although silver based catalysts are easily eroded by photogenerated holes, the Ag2S/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst was found to be highly stable in the cyclic experiments. Based on the results of BET, Pl and DRS analysis, two possible reasons have been proposed for the enhanced visible light activity and stability of this novel photocatalyst: (1) broadening of the photoabsorption range and (2) efficient separation of photoinduced charge carriers which does not allow the photoexcited electrons to accumulate on the conduction band of Ag2S and hence prevents the photocorrosion.

Polymer optical fibers (POFs) doped with organic dyes can be used to make efficient lasers and amplifiers due to the high gains achievable in short distances. This paper analyzes the peculiarities of light amplification in POFs through some experimental data and a computational model capable of carrying out both power and spectral analyses. We investigate the emission spectral shifts and widths and on the optimum signal wavelength and pump power as functions of the fiber length, the fiber numerical aperture and the radial distribution of the dopant. Analyses for both step-index and graded-index POFs have been done.

A capillary electrophoresis microchip coupled with a confocal laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detector was successfully constructed for the analysis of trace amounts of heavy metals in environmental sources. A new fluorescence dye, RBPhOH, synthesized from rhodamine B, was utilized in a glass microchip to selectively determine copper with high sensitivity. A series of factors including running buffer concentration, detection voltage, and sample loading time were optimized for maximum LIF detector response and, hence, method sensitivity.
