Since the introduction of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for the repair and retrofit of concrete structures in the 1980’s, considerable research has been devoted to the feasibility of their application and predictive modeling of their performance. However, the effects of flaws present in the constitutive components and the practices in substrate preparation and treatment have not yet been thoroughly studied. This research aims at investigating the effect of surface preparation and treatment for the pre-cured FRP systems and the groove size tolerance for near surface mounted (NSM) FRP systems; and to set thresholds for guaranteed system performance. This study was conducted as part of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 10-59B to develop construction specifications and process control manual for repair and retrofit of concrete structures using bonded FRP systems. The research included both analytical and experimental components. The experimental program for the pre-cured FRP systems consisted of a total of twenty-four (24) reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams with various surface preparation parameters and surface flaws, including roughness, flatness, voids and cracks (cuts). For the NSM FRP systems, a total of twelve (12) additional RC T-beams were tested with different grooves sizes for FRP bars and strips. The analytical program included developing an elaborate nonlinear finite element model using the general purpose software ANSYS. The bond interface between FRP and concrete was modeled by a series of nonlinear springs. The model was validated against test data from the present study as well as those available from the literature. The model was subsequently used to extend the experimental range of parameters for surface flatness in pre-cured FRP systems and for groove size study in the NSM FRP systems. Test results, confirmed by further analyses, indicated that contrary to the general belief in the industry, the impact of surface roughness on the global performance of pre-cured FRP systems was negligible. The study also verified that threshold limits set for wet lay-up FRP systems can be extended to pre-cured systems. The study showed that larger surface voids and cracks (cuts) can adversely impact both the strength and ductility of pre-cured FRP systems. On the other hand, frequency (or spacing) of surface cracks (cuts) may only affect system ductility rather than its strength. Finally, within the range studied, groove size tolerance of ±1/8 in. does not appear to have an adverse effect on the performance of NSM FRP systems.

This paper addresses the theme of retrotif applied to buildings that belong to the modernist architectural production of historical interest located in the urban area of Natal . The overall objective is to identify and harmonize procedures for retrofit and architectural heritage preservation using elements of constructive analysis of expression and Benefit Cost Ratio ( BCR ) parameters established by the National Electric Energy Agency - ANEEL . The hypothesis put forward is that by stimulating the projetual year analysis , retrofit interventions , it is possible to obtain better results with projects RCB addressing the issues of preservation of architectural heritage . For both flow analysis of process solutions and proposals for action of elements and systems that seek to improve the energy performance of the building , restoring or preserving the architectural elements were developed . The proposed interventions undergo performance through computer simulations of systems such as DesignBuilder, Solar and Sun Tool. The energy results were converted to the analysis of RCB parameter and compared to the constructive expression of the project because the prenatal and intervention. From the results , a plot was constructed which results in a comparison between the RCB and the constructive expression of the simulated interventions

Nell’ottica della pianificazione di interventi di Retrofit Energetico che possano migliorare l’efficienza energetica del comparto edilizio-residenziale, in relazione agli obiettivi della vigente normativa energetica di ispirazione comunitaria, obiettivo della tesi è la ricerca e validazione di strumenti economici che possano guidare le committenze nella scelta del migliore rapporto tra costi e benefici delle opere. La tesi affronta l’approccio dell’analisi del Costo Globale come previsto dalla normativa comunitaria formato dalla direttiva 2010/31/UE sulla prestazione energetica degli edifici, dal regolamento delegato UE n°244 del 16 gennaio 2012 e dalla norma EN 15459 del 2008. Obiettivo è la comparazione di tre interventi alternativi di retrofit energetico per un edificio ad uso misto sito nel centro di Bologna. Si tratta di interventi mirati all’efficientamento e all’abbattimento del fabbisogno energetico per la climatizzazione invernale dello stabile, con gradi successivi di approfondimento, come definiti dalla attuale normativa (ristrutturazione importante di primo livello, di secondo livello e riqualificazione energetica). Lo studio si sviluppa definendo le criticità dello stato attuale del costruito e i possibili interventi migliorativi necessari. Definiti i pacchetti tecnici delle soluzioni di intervento si è passato alla ricerca dei dati necessari comprendenti dati finanziari su tassi di sconto e di inflazione e sui costi di investimento iniziali, costi di gestione e manutenzione, costi di sostituzione e costi energetici relativi alle varie alternative di progetto. I risultati dell’analisi economica delle alternative progettuali, nel periodo di studio considerato, vengono poi confrontati con i dati relativi all’impatto energetico e delle emissioni di CO2 e con le relative classi energetiche.

Increasing energy efficiency in the residential sector, while maintaining adequate home ventilation for health and well-being, is proving to be a challenge. This study assesses the efficacy of passive ventilation strategies designed to comply with building regulations and imposed after housing energy-efficiency retrofits. In particular, it focuses on the provision of ventilation using background through-wall vents, which remains a common strategy in a number of European countries including Ireland and the UK, where vent sizes, related to floor area, are stipulated in building regulations. A collective of social housing, with background through-wall vents installed post thermal retrofit, is taken as a case study. These homes are modelled to interrogate the impact of the passive ventilation strategy on house air exchange rate and thermal heating energy loads. The reaction of occupants to through-wall vent installation is decidedly negative and many block vents to limit thermal discomfort and heat loss. Simulation studies show significant external air ingress through vents. A wide range of effective air change rates are observed when vents are sized without reference to building airtightness, and significant energy penalties result for the leakier homes. This study evaluates the provision of passive through-wall ventilation as part of a retrofit programme and shows it to have a number of drawbacks that may impact on the health of the building and its occupants and ultimately be at odds with the aims of achieving energy efficiency in the residential sector.

Questo progetto è stato sviluppato durante un periodo di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile del Trinity College e continuato presso l’Università di Bologna. Il progetto ha l’obiettivo di analizzare le soluzioni per l’ampliamento, la sostituzione degli impianti e l’ottimizzazione energetica di un tipico edificio residenziale Irlandese, una end of terrace in mattoni costruita negli anni ’20, collocata a Blackrock (Dublino). Diversi studi sostengono che lo stock abitativo irlandese è il peggiore del nord Europa per quanto riguarda la performance energetica. Questa tesi consta di una prima parte di studio del contesto e delle tecniche costruttive tradizionali irlandesi; è presente un capitolo di approfondimento sulle leggi riguardanti le costruzioni e gli incentivi forniti dal governo irlandese per interventi di retrofit energetico. Il terzo capitolo è un’analisi dell'esistente, con disegni del rilievo geometrico, immagini dell’edificio originale, termogrammi e dati riguardanti l’attuale performance energetica. Vengono poi mostrate diverse ipotesi di progetto e, una volta determinata la disposizione degli spazi interni, vengono considerate due soluzioni simili, ma costruite con pacchetti costruttivi diversi. Nel Progetto A l’involucro dell’addizione ha una struttura in muratura, nel Progetto B la struttura è in X-lam. Le performance energetiche delle due proposte vengono confrontate tramite una simulazione attuata grazie all'utilizzo del software dinamico IES-VE. Viene valutata l’applicazione di energie rinnovabili, quali l’energia solare e eolica e l’apporto che queste possono dare al bilancio energetico. Infine viene fatta un’analisi dei costi, valutando possibili suddivisioni dei lavori e ipotizzando un piano di ritorno dell’investimento, anche in combinazione con l’applicazione di energie rinnovabili. Alla fine del progetto si trova una valutazione quantitativa dei miglioramenti dell’edificio e un’analisi critica dei limiti del progetto.

Urban retrofit is becoming increasingly established as one of the most effective solutions to contain the energy consumption of the existing building stock, to reduce vulnerability to natural and man-made risk and generally improve the quality of built space. However, the planning of retrofit interventions at urban scale should take account of the actual feasibility of measures lest they remain only on paper. This contribution supplies an overview of the many issues related to the subject of urban regeneration, proposing a procedure to identify practical interventions to minimize costs and maximize benefits, in terms of energy efficiency, an increase in resilience and improvement in the quality of the building stock. This procedure was applied to a case study of a neighborhood in the city of Naples, a high-density urban area which is particularly vulnerable to volcanic and seismic risk, and to risks due to climate change.

Ce projet porte, dans un souci d’efficacité énergétique, sur la récupération d’énergie des rejets thermiques à basse température. Une analyse d’optimisation des technologies dans le but d’obtenir un système de revalorisation de chaleur rentable fait objet de cette recherche. Le but sera de soutirer la chaleur des rejets thermiques et de la réappliquer à un procédé industriel. Réduire la consommation énergétique d’une usine entre habituellement en conflit avec l’investissement requis pour les équipements de revalorisation de chaleur. Ce projet de maitrise porte sur l’application d’optimisations multiobjectives par algorithme génétique (GA) pour faciliter le design en retrofit des systèmes de revalorisation de chaleur industrielle. L’originalité de cette approche consiste à l’emploi du «fast non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm» ou NSGA-II dans le but de trouver les solutions optimales entre la valeur capitale et les pertes exergétiques des réseaux d’échangeurs de chaleur et de pompes à chaleur. Identifier les solutions optimales entre le coût et l’efficacité exergétique peut ensuite aider dans le processus de sélection d’un design approprié en considérant les coûts énergétiques. Afin de tester cette approche, une étude de cas est proposée pour la récupération de chaleur dans une usine de pâte et papier. Ceci inclut l’intégration d’échangeur de chaleur Shell&tube, d’échangeur à contact direct et de pompe à chaleur au réseau thermique existant. Pour l’étude de cas, le projet en collaboration avec Cascades est constitué de deux étapes, soit de ciblage et d’optimisation de solutions de retrofit du réseau d’échangeur de chaleur de l’usine de tissus Cascades à Kinsley Falls. L’étape de ciblage, basée sur la méthode d’analyse du pincement, permet d’identifier et de sélectionner les modifications de topologie du réseau d’échangeurs existant en y ajoutant de nouveaux équipements. Les scénarios résultants passent ensuite à l’étape d’optimisation où les modèles mathématiques pour chaque nouvel équipement sont optimisés afin de produire une courbe d’échange optimal entre le critère économique et exergétique. Pourquoi doubler l’analyse économique d’un critère d’exergie? D’abord, parce que les modèles économiques sont par définition de nature imprécise. Coupler les résultats des modèles économiques avec un critère exergétique permet d’identifier des solutions de retrofit plus efficaces sans trop s’éloigner d’un optimum économique. Ensuite, le rendement exergétique permet d’identifier les designs utilisant l’énergie de haute qualité, telle que l’électricité ou la vapeur, de façon plus efficace lorsque des sources d’énergie de basse qualité, telles que les effluents thermiques, sont disponibles. Ainsi en choisissant un design qui détruit moins d’exergie, il demandera un coût énergétique moindre. Les résultats de l’étude de cas publiés dans l’article montrent une possibilité de réduction des coûts en demande de vapeur de 89% tout en réduisant la destruction d’exergie de 82%. Dans certains cas de retrofit, la solution la plus justifiable économiquement est également très proche de la solution à destruction d’exergie minimale. L’analyse du réseau d’échangeurs et l’amélioration de son rendement exergétique permettront de justifier l’intégration de ces systèmes dans l’usine. Les diverses options pourront ensuite être considérées par Cascades pour leurs faisabilités technologiques et économiques sachant qu’elles ont été optimisées.

net sustainability. At best they reduce relative resource consumption. They still consume vast quantities of materials, energy, water and ecosystems during construction. Moreover, green buildings replace land and ecosystems with structures that, at the very best, only 'mimic' ecosystems<'). Mimicking nature is little compensation when we have lost a third of species that are integral parts of our life support system. Already, development has exceeded the Earth's ecological carrying capacity, so even 'restorative' design is not enough. Urban areas must be retrofitted to increase net bioregional carrying capacity - just to support existing or reduced population levels in cities. The eco-retrofitting of our built environment is therefore an essential precondition of achieving a sustainable society. But we need to eco-retrofit cities in ways that increase net sustainability, not just relative efficiency.

This paper reports on progress in developing new design and measurement concepts, and translating these concepts into practical applications. This research addresses gaps in ‘best practice’ green building, and is aimed ultimately at replacing green buildings with sustainable urban environments. Building on the author’s previously articulated concepts of Design for Eco-services and Positive Development, this research will demonstrate how to eco-retrofit cities so that they reverse the negative impacts of past design and generate net positive ecological impacts, at no extra cost. In contrast to ‘restorative’ design,this means increasing ecological carrying capacity and natural and social capital through built environment design. Some exemplars for facilitating Positive development will be presented in this talk,such as Green Scaffolding for retrofits, and Green Space Walls for new construction. These structures have been designed to grow and change over time, be easily deconstructed, and entail little waste. The frames support mini-ecospheres that provide a wide range of ecosystem services and biodiversity habitats, as well as heating, cooling and ventilating. In combination, the modules serve to improve human and environmental health. Current work is focused on developing a range of such space frame walls, optimised through an innovative marriage of eco-logical design and virtual modelling.

While raised floors as a building component has been around since the 70's, its application in terms of a holistic system in the fit-out of commercial office buildings has not been fully embraced due to some inherent problems and negative perceptions of the stakeholders involved. Today, the new generation of raised floor systems(RFS) offers a suite of innovative and integrated products and solutions, and as such are not only suitable for the changing office space requirements, but also capable of meeting tbe smart and sustainable challenges, which are becoming the prerequisite in the refurbishment of existing buildings. As there has been a prediction for continued growth in refurbishment projects in major cities around the globe, RFS as an alternative methodology warrants new examination and highlight. This paper introduces research recently completed in Australia that provided a holistic approach to the application of RFS enabled by intelligent building technologies, and examined key issues of project development when refurbishing commercial office buildings. It focuses on the constructability of RFS, and how it will respond to smart feature requirements in buildings while extending service life, meeting new organisational change and workplace health needs for applications in today's office environment. It also introduces key project procurement issues and the integrated decision support when dealing with the refurbishment of office buildings. The paper recommends procurement strategies as well as the justification of adopting the RFS technology in the Australian office building sector. Given the current economic downturn, refitting as opposed to new build .projects will come onto the spotlight. This paper will provide valuable information for building owners and developers alike when contemplating the retrofit of office buildings.
