Coaptive thermo coagulation (CTC) for the treatment of stigmata of recent hemorrhage (SRH) in the colon is risky. We evaluated the safety and effectiveness of endoclips in 13 patients with acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). Thirty-day re-bleeding and complication rates were comparable to a historical cohort of 41 patients (group 2) who underwent CTC/IE (injection epinephrine) for the management of acute lower GIB. There was no difference in the 30-day re-bleeding rates in the two groups. In group I, immediate hemostasis was successful in all patients. Three of 13 patients (23.1%) developed re-bleeding. In group II, 41 patients from six prior studies underwent CTC and/or IE for the treatment of HRS where 12 (29.3%) developed re-bleeding. There were no immediate complications. Endoclip deployment is as effective as CTC and/or IE for treatment of SRH in the colon.

Benign leiomyomas are common soft tumors, arising especially in the female genital tract; unlike uterine leiomyomas, they rarely occur in perineal regions. They can develop wherever smooth muscle is present. Herein is reported the case of a large perineal leiomyoma in a 36-year-old woman who noted a palpable mass close to the rectum 1 year after she had delivered vaginally, in the same region of as a mediolateral episiotomy. Complete surgical excision was performed. Histopathologic findings were compatible with benign leiomyoma. At postoperative follow-up, no signs of anal dysfunction were noted. There was no pathologic correlation between formation of the leiomyoma and the episiotomy despite a possible association between the presence of fibrosis and development of leiomyomas, which was found during a literature review. One hundred fifty-one Erysipelothrix spp. isolates from Brazilian swine were characterized by serotyping, determination of antimicrobial susceptibility, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Among all isolates, 139 were classified in 18 different serotypes and serotype 2b was the most frequent. The susceptibility profiles of the isolates were very similar among each other, which did not permit subtyping Erysipelothrix spp. isolates by the antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Despite the fact that AFLP and PFGE provided the same discriminatory index (0.98), PFGE was more discriminatory than AFLP, given the types of groups it generates. Regardless the technique employed (AFLP or PFGE), no discrimination between recent and historical isolates was established, neither a fixed epidemiologic pattern for their grouping was observed. Nevertheless, AFLP could be an interesting alternative for discriminating the Erysipelothrix species, while PFGE could be an indication for discerning this bacterium according to the serotypes. Traumatic injury to the dentition of dipnoans, indirectly as a result of jaw fracture, or directly from damage to the tooth tissues, is present throughout the history of this group, in fossil and in Recent material. Bones heal, but traces of the injury are retained in the tooth tissues, permanently if the proliferative regions of the tooth plate are injured, or until the damaged dentines are removed by wear if the growing regions are left intact. Lack of resorption and repair of damaged dental hard tissues in dipnoans has implications for some models of tooth plate growth in lungfish with a permanent dentition, because this indicates that lungfish tooth plates may not have the capacity to form reparative dentine as part of the normal growth processes.

In the last few years two factors have helped to significantly advance our understanding of the Myxozoa. First, the phenomenal increase in fin fish aquaculture in the 1990s has lead to the increased importance of these parasites; in rum this has lead to intensified research efforts, which have increased knowledge of the development, diagnosis, and pathogenesis of myxozoans. The hallmark discovery in the 1980s that the life cycle of Myxobolus cerebralis requires development of an actinosporean stage in the Oligochaete. Tubifex tubifex, led to the elucidation of the life cycles of several other myxozoans. Also, the life cycle and taxonomy of the enigmatic PKX myxozoan has been resolved: it is the alternate stage of the unusual myxozoan. Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, from bryozoans. The 18S rDNA gene of many species has been sequenced, and here we add 22 new sequences to the data set. Phylogenetic analyses using all these sequences indicate that: 1) the Myxozoa are closely related to Cnidaria (also supported by morphological data), 2) marine taxa at the genus level branch separately from genera that usually infect freshwater fishes; 3) taxa cluster more by development and tissue location than by spore morphology; 4) the tetracapsulids branched off early in myxozoan evolution, perhaps reflected by their having bryozoan. rather than annelid hosts; 5) the morphology of actinosporeans offers little information for determining their myxosporean counterparts (assuming that they exist), and 6) the marine actinosporeans from Australia appear to form a clade within the platysporinid myxosporeans. Ribosomal DNA sequences have also enabled development of diagnostic tests for myxozoans. PCR and in situ hybridisation tests based on rDNA sequences have been developed for Myxobolus cerebralis. Ceratomyxa shasta. Kudoa spp,, and Tetracapsula bryosalmonae (PKX). Lectin-based and antibody tests have also been developed for certain myxozoans, such as PKX and C. shasta. We also review important diseases caused by myxozoans. which are emerging or re-emerging. Epizootics of whirling disease in wild rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have recently been reported throughout the Rocky Mountain states of the USA. With a dramatic increase in aquaculture of fishes using marine netpens, several marine myxozoans have been recognized or elevated in status as pathological agents. Kudoa thyrsites infections have caused severe post-harvest myoliquefaction in pen-reared Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and Ceratomyxa spp., Sphaerospora spp., and Myxidium leei cause disease in pen-reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and sea bream species (family Sparidae) in Mediterranean countries.

Marked elevation of dioxin associated with the herbicide Agent Orange was recently found in 19 of 20 blood samples from persons living in Bien Hoa, a large city in southern Vietnam. This city is located near an air base that was used for Agent Orange spray missions between 1962 and 1970. A spill of Agent Orange occurred at this air base more than 30 years before blood samples were collected in 1999. Samples were collected, frozen, and sent to a World Health Organization-certified dioxin laboratory fm congener-specific analysis as part of a Vietnam Red Cross project. Previous analyses of more than 2200 pooled blood samples collected in the 1990s identified Bien Hoa as one of several southern Vietnam areas with persons having elevated blood dioxin levels from exposure to Agent Orange. In sharp contrast to this study, our previous research showed decreasing tissue dioxin levels over time since 1970. Only the dioxin that contaminated Agent Orange, 2,3, 7, 8-tetrachlmodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), was elevated in the blood of 19 of 20 persons sampled from Bien Hoa. A comparison pooled sample from 100 residents of Hanoi, where Agent Orange was not used, measured blood TCDD levels of 2 parts per trillion (ppt). TCDD levels of up to 271 ppt, a 135-fold increase, were found in Bien Hoa residents. TCDD contamination was also found in some nearby soil and sediment samples. Persons new to this region and children born after Agent Orange spraying ended also had elevated TCDD levels. This TCDD uptake was recent and occurred decades after spraying ended. We hypothesize that a major route of current and past exposures is from the movement of dioxin from soil into river sediment, then into fish, and from fish consumption into people.

The discovery of periodic mesoporous MCM-41 and related molecular sieves has attracted significant attention from a fundamental as well as applied perspective. They possess well-defined cylindrical/hexagonal mesopores with a simple geometry, tailored pore size, and reproducible surface properties. Hence, there is an ever-growing scientific interest in the challenges posed by their processing and characterization and by the refinement of various sorption models. Further, MCM-41-based materials are currently under intense investigation with respect to their utility as adsorbents, catalysts, supports, ion-exchangers, and molecular hosts. In this article, we provide a critical review of the developments in these areas with particular emphasis on adsorption characteristics, progress in controlling the pore sizes, and a comparison of pore size distributions using traditional and newer models. The model proposed by the authors for adsorption isotherms and criticalities in capillary condensation and hysteresis is found to explain unusual adsorption behavior in these materials while providing a convenient characterization tool.

Recent progress in the production, purification, and experimental and theoretical investigations of carbon nanotubes for hydrogen storage are reviewed. From the industrial point of view, the chemical vapor deposition process has shown advantages over laser ablation and electric-arc-discharge methods. The ultimate goal in nanotube synthesis should be to gain control over geometrical aspects of nanotubes, such as location and orientation, and the atomic structure of nanotubes, including helicity and diameter. There is currently no effective and simple purification procedure that fulfills all requirements for processing carbon nanotubes. Purification is still the bottleneck for technical applications, especially where large amounts of material are required. Although the alkali-metal-doped carbon nanotubes showed high H-2 Weight uptake, further investigations indicated that some of this uptake was due to water rather than hydrogen. This discovery indicates a potential source of error in evaluation of the storage capacity of doped carbon nanotubes. Nevertheless, currently available single-wall nanotubes yield a hydrogen uptake value near 4 wt% under moderate pressure and room temperature. A further 50% increase is needed to meet U.S. Department of Energy targets for commercial exploitation. Meeting this target will require combining experimental and theoretical efforts to achieve a full understanding of the adsorption process, so that the uptake can be rationally optimized to commercially attractive levels. Large-scale production and purification of carbon nanotubes and remarkable improvement of H-2 storage capacity in carbon nanotubes represent significant technological and theoretical challenges in the years to come.
