The occupational risks in the nanotechnology research laboratories are an important topic since a great number of researchers are involved in this area. The risk assessment performed by both qualitative and quantitative methods is a necessary step for the management of the occupational risks. Risk assessment could be performed by qualitative methods that gather consensus in the scientific community. It is also possible to use quantitative methods, based in different technics and metrics, as indicative exposure limits are been settled by several institutions. While performing the risk assessment, the information on the materials used is very important and, if it is not updated, it could create a bias in the assessment results. The exposure to TiO2 nanoparticles risk was assessed in a research laboratory using a quantitative exposure method and qualitative risk assessment methods. It was found the results from direct-reading Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) equipment and the CB Nanotool seem to be related and aligned, while the results obtained from the use of the Stoffenmanager Nano seem to indicate a higher risk level.

Consumer neuroscience (neuromarketing) is an emerging field of marketing research which uses brain imaging techniques to study neural conditions and processes that underlie consumption. The purpose of this study was to map this fairly new and growing field in Finland by studying the opinions of both Finnish consumers and marketing professionals towards it and comparing the opinions to the current consumer neuroscience literature, and based on that evaluate the usability of brain imaging techniques as a marketing research method. Mixed methods research design was chosen for this study. Quantitative data was collected from 232 consumers and 28 marketing professionals by means of online surveys. Both respondent groups had either neutral opinions or lacked knowledge about the four themes chosen for this study: benefits, limitations and challenges, ethical issues and future prospects of consumer neuroscience. Qualitative interview data was collected from 2 individuals from Finnish neuromarketing companies to deepen insights gained from quantitative research. The four interview themes were the same as in the surveys and the interviewees’ answers were mostly in line with the current literature, although more optimistic about the future of the field. The interviews also exposed a gap between academic consumer neuroscience research and practical level applications. The results of this study suggest that there are still many unresolved challenges and relevant populations either have neutral opinions or lack information about consumer neuroscience. The practical level applications are, however, already being successfully used and this new field of marketing research is growing both globally and in Finland.

Introduction: Bien que l'importance de transférer les données de la recherche à la pratique a été largement démontrée, ce processus est toujours lent et fait face à plusieurs défis tels que la conceptualisation des évidences, la validité interne et externe de la recherche scientifique et les coûts élevés de la collecte de grandes quantités de données axées sur le patient. Les dossiers dentaires des patients contiennent des renseignements valables qui donneraient aux chercheurs cliniques une opportunité d'utiliser un large éventail d'informations quantitatives ou qualitatives. La standardisation du dossier clinique permettrait d’échanger et de réutiliser des données dans différents domaines de recherche. Objectifs: Le but de cette étude était de concevoir un dossier patient axé sur la recherche dans le domaine de la prosthodontie amovible à la clinique de premier cycle de l’Université de Montréal. Méthodes: Cette étude a utilisé des méthodes de recherche-action avec 4 étapes séquentielles : l'identification des problèmes, la collecte et l'interprétation des données, la planification et l’évaluation de l'action. Les participants de l'étude (n=14) incluaient des professeurs, des chercheurs cliniques et des instructeurs cliniques dans le domaine de la prosthodontie amovible. La collecte des données a été menée à l’aide d’une revue de littérature ciblée et complète sur les résultats en prosthodontie ainsi que par le biais de discussions de groupes et d’entrevues. Les données qualitatives ont été analysées en utilisant QDA Miner 3.2.3. Résultats: Les participants de l'étude ont soulevé plusieurs points absents au formulaire actuel de prosthodontie à la clinique de premier cycle. Ils ont partagé leurs idées pour la conception d'un nouveau dossier-patient basé sur 3 objectifs principaux: les objectifs cliniques, éducatifs et de recherche. Les principaux sujets d’intérêt en prosthodontie amovibles, les instruments appropriés ainsi que les paramètres cliniques ont été sélectionnés par le groupe de recherche. Ces résultats ont été intégrés dans un nouveau formulaire basé sur cette consultation. La pertinence du nouveau formulaire a été évaluée par le même groupe d'experts et les modifications requises ont été effectuées. Les participants de l'étude ont convenu que le cycle de recherche-action doit être poursuivi afin d'évaluer la faisabilité d’implémentation de ce dossier modifié dans un cadre universitaire. Conclusion: Cette étude est une première étape pour développer une base de données dans le domaine de la prothodontie amovible. La recherche-action est une méthode de recherche utile dans ce processus, et les éducateurs académiques sont bien placés pour mener ce type de recherche.

This article considers the place of qualitative research in psychoanalysis and child psychotherapy. It discusses why research methodology for many years occupied so small a place in these fields, and examines the cultural and social developments since the 1960s which have changed this situation, giving formal methods of research much greater significance. It reflects on the different pressures to develop formal research methods which arise both from outside the psychoanalytic field, as a condition of its continued professional survival, and from within it, where its main aim is the development of fundamental psychoanalytic knowledge, It suggests that the conduct of mainly quantitative research into treatment outcomes is largely a response to these external pressures, whilst the main benefits to be gained from the development of qualitative research methods, such as Grounded Theory, are in facilitating the knowledge-generating capacities and achievements of child psychotherapists themselves. The paper describes Grounded Theory methods, and explains how they can be valuable in the recognition of hitherto unrecognised meanings and patterns as these are made visible in clinical practice. Finally, it briefly describes five different examples of completed doctoral studies, all of which have added significantly to the knowledge-base of child psychotherapy, and which demonstrate how much can be accomplished using this method of research.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of the systematic use of comics as a literary-didactic method to reduce gender differences in reading literacy and reading motivation at the primary level of education. It was assumed that the use of comics would have a positive effect on pupils’ reading literacy and reading motivation, while also reducing the aforementioned differences between boys and girls. The dimensions of reading literacy and reading motivation were examined in experimental and control groups, before and after the intervention, by means of questionnaires and tests for pupils. The sample consisted of 143 pupils from second to fifth grade from two Slovenian primary schools in a rural environment, of which 73 pupils participated in the experimental group and 70 pupils represented the control group. Effects of the use of comics as a literary-didactic method were not found: using comics as a literary-didactic method did not have a statistically significant effect on pupils’ reading literacy and reading motivation. However, when the four-way structure of the research (taking into account the age and gender of the pupils) was considered, some subgroups showed a statistically significant increase in reading interest and attitude towards reading. No reduction of gender differences in reading literacy and reading motivation was found. This paper presents the lifecycle assessment (LCA) of fuel ethanol, as 100% of the vehicle fuel, from sugarcane in Brazil. The functional unit is 10,000 km run in an urban area by a car with a 1,600-cm(3) engine running on fuel hydrated ethanol, and the resulting reference flow is 1,000 kg of ethanol. The product system includes agricultural and industrial activities, distribution, cogeneration of electricity and steam, ethanol use during car driving, and industrial by-products recycling to irrigate sugarcane fields. The use of sugarcane by the ethanol agribusiness is one of the foremost financial resources for the economy of the Brazilian rural area, which occupies extensive areas and provides far-reaching potentials for renewable fuel production. But, there are environmental impacts during the fuel ethanol lifecycle, which this paper intents to analyze, including addressing the main activities responsible for such impacts and indicating some suggestions to minimize the impacts. This study is classified as an applied quantitative research, and the technical procedure to achieve the exploratory goal is based on bibliographic revision, documental research, primary data collection, and study cases at sugarcane farms and fuel ethanol industries in the northeast of SA o pound Paulo State, Brazil. The methodological structure for this LCA study is in agreement with the International Standardization Organization, and the method used is the Environmental Design of Industrial Products. The lifecycle impact assessment (LCIA) covers the following emission-related impact categories: global warming, ozone formation, acidification, nutrient enrichment, ecotoxicity, and human toxicity. The results of the fuel ethanol LCI demonstrate that even though alcohol is considered a renewable fuel because it comes from biomass (sugarcane), it uses a high quantity and diversity of nonrenewable resources over its lifecycle. The input of renewable resources is also high mainly because of the water consumption in the industrial phases, due to the sugarcane washing process. During the lifecycle of alcohol, there is a surplus of electric energy due to the cogeneration activity. Another focus point is the quantity of emissions to the atmosphere and the diversity of the substances emitted. Harvesting is the unit process that contributes most to global warming. For photochemical ozone formation, harvesting is also the activity with the strongest contributions due to the burning in harvesting and the emissions from using diesel fuel. The acidification impact potential is mostly due to the NOx emitted by the combustion of ethanol during use, on account of the sulfuric acid use in the industrial process and because of the NOx emitted by the burning in harvesting. The main consequence of the intensive use of fertilizers to the field is the high nutrient enrichment impact potential associated with this activity. The main contributions to the ecotoxicity impact potential come from chemical applications during crop growth. The activity that presents the highest impact potential for human toxicity (HT) via air and via soil is harvesting. Via water, HT potential is high in harvesting due to lubricant use on the machines. The normalization results indicate that nutrient enrichment, acidification, and human toxicity via air and via water are the most significant impact potentials for the lifecycle of fuel ethanol. The fuel ethanol lifecycle contributes negatively to all the impact potentials analyzed: global warming, ozone formation, acidification, nutrient enrichment, ecotoxicity, and human toxicity. Concerning energy consumption, it consumes less energy than its own production largely because of the electricity cogeneration system, but this process is highly dependent on water. The main causes for the biggest impact potential indicated by the normalization is the nutrient application, the burning in harvesting and the use of diesel fuel. The recommendations for the ethanol lifecycle are: harvesting the sugarcane without burning; more environmentally benign agricultural practices; renewable fuel rather than diesel; not washing sugarcane and implementing water recycling systems during the industrial processing; and improving the system of gases emissions control during the use of ethanol in cars, mainly for NOx. Other studies on the fuel ethanol from sugarcane may analyze in more details the social aspects, the biodiversity, and the land use impact.

The purpose of this article is to present a defense of the use of single case studies in management research. The defense is necessary because this type of research has been relegated to a secondary role, or even rejected, by many researchers, who consider it unscientific. Evidence of this low status is the fact that most reputable academic journals in management publish few articles based on single-case studies. In this paper, we examine in detail the objections to the use of such cases in management research. We show the efforts made by some researchers to answer these objections and we show quality criteria for research that are alternatives to the criteria used in the so-called "scientific method." Our analysis suggests that a better understanding - by researchers with different methodological preferences - of the arguments for each particular use of the single-case study as a research method would allow a better dialogue between researchers and benefit management research as a whole.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of qualitative research within the scope of management scientific studies, referring to its philosophy, nature and instruments. It also confronts it with quantitative methodology, approaching its differences as well as its complementariness and synergies, with the purpose of explaining, from a more analytic point of view, the relevance of qualitative methodology in the course of an authentic and real research despite its complexity. Design/methodology/approach: Regardless of its broad application, one may attest the scarcity literature that focuses on qualitative research applied to the management scientific area, as opposed to the large amount that refers to quantitative research. Findings: The paper shows the influence that qualitative research has on management scientific research. Originality/value:. Qualitative research assumes an important role within qualitative research by allowing for the study and analysis of certain types of phenomena that occur inside organisations, and in respect of which quantitative studies cannot provide an answer.

Esta dissertação estuda de que forma a publicidade impressa contribui para a construção de marcas de luxo. Inicialmente é trabalhado o conceito de luxo de forma aprofundada, elencando os seus principais autores e respetivas teorias identificando ainda os principais atributos deste tipo de produtos e serviços. Posteriormente é desenvolvido o conceito de marca, em conjunto com os modelos de construção de marca, focando a análise do modelo proposto por David Aaker com o intuito de compreender melhor quais os principais ativos aos quais uma marca deve estar atenta se quer estar presente neste sector. Numa segunda parte deste estudo desenvolveu-se um método de investigação que engloba a análise de um corpus de 232 anúncios retirados da revista Wallpaper durante o ano de 2012. Trabalhou-se este conjunto de anúncios por um lado através de uma análise extensiva, quantitativa, e por outro lado através de uma análise semiótica, qualitativa. Procurou-se deste modo compreender o que torna único este tipo de marcas no que diz respeito ao contributo do seu discurso publicitário para a sua afirmação e posicionamento no sector do luxo. Através deste estudo foi possível identificar o importante contributo da publicidade para o sucesso, crescimento e manutenção de uma marca de luxo. Foi possível concluir que é determinante para este tipo de marcas manter de forma coerente e contínua a sua identidade ao longo do tempo. A narrativa publicitária em imagem impressa, assume-se como um importante agente comunicacional, possibilitando e potenciando ligações emocionais duradouras a longo prazo com os seus consumidores, consolidando a marca, e reforçando a sua identidade.

The investigation which employed the action research method (qualitative analysis)was divided into four fases. In phases 1-3 the participants were six double bass students at Nossa Senhora do Cabo Music School. Pilot exercises in creativity were followed by broader and more ambitious projects. In phase 4 the techniques were tested and amplified during a summer course for twelve double bass students at Santa Cecilia College.

The WORKS Project started two years ago (2005), involving the efforts of research institutes of 13 European countries with the main purpose of improving the understanding of the major changes in work in the knowledge-based society, taking account both of global forces and the regional diversity within Europe. This research meeting in Sofia (Bulgaria) aimed to present synthetically the massive amount of data collected in the case studies (occupational and organisational) and with the quantitative research during last year.

Este estudo insere-se no âmbito da Geometria e pretende compreender a influência dos recursos didáticos utilizados no reconhecimento de propriedades e relações geométricas em figuras planas. De acordo com o objetivo do estudo formulamos duas questões orientadoras que se articulam entre si. - Que fragilidades apresentam os alunos, no reconhecimento de propriedades geométricas em figuras planas? - Que contributos resultam da utilização de materiais manipuláveis, na visualização espacial e investigação de propriedades geométricas? Com este estudo pretendemos reunir informação que contribua para aprofundar o conhecimento sobre o raciocínio geométrico dos alunos. Em termos metodológicos segue um método de investigação misto, com recolha de informação qualitativa de natureza interpretativa e quantitativa, na modalidade de estudo de caso. A recolha de dados foi realizada numa turma de 4.º ano do ensino básico onde foi desenvolvida a experiência didática. A informação recolhida resultou da observação direta e as fontes dos dados foram as produções dos alunos, as notas de campo, registos fotográficos, vídeo e áudio. A docente assumiu o papel de investigadora e orientadora das tarefas propostas aos alunos tendo estes desempenhado um papel ativo na construção do seu próprio conhecimento. Os resultados obtidos permitem evidenciar as fragilidades dos alunos no reconhecimento de propriedades geométricas de figuras planas em diferentes posições. Destacam ainda os contributos da utilização da Mira e do Tangram, no estudo da simetria e no desenvolvimento da visualização espacial para a concretização de aprendizagens concretas, motivadoras e significativas.

The objective of this dissertation was to explore the German men’s grooming market and to discuss the usage and purchase behavior of young male adults. After a brief market analysis, this dissertation evaluates the results of qualitative and quantitative research. The conducted research explored the consumer’s reasoning for and attitude towards personal grooming, and their attitude towards product attributes and the aging process. The dissertation concludes that men attach high value to personal grooming but only to the extent that their personal need is satisfied. As the male involvement in MG is highly dependent on each consumer’s individual needs, the market requires a careful segmentation.
