Sustained atrial fibrillation (AF) is maintained by sites displaying high dominant frequency (DF). In patients (pts) with long-standing persistent AF (LS-pAF), their spatial distribution and the presence of a left-to-right atrial DF gradient remain poorly known. We hypothesized that the pre-ablation bi-atrial frequency characteristics of LS-pAF pts terminated within the left atrium (LT) are different from that of non terminated (NT) ones. Methods: 23 consecutive pts (59±7y, LS-pAF duration 19±12m) underwent stepwise catheter ablation (step-CA) consisting in pulmonary veins isolation, left atrial (LA) defragmentation, and right atrial (RA) ablations for non terminated AF. A quadripolar catheter (CAT) was placed into the RA appendage (RAA), a decapolar CAT into the coronary sinus (CS) and a duodecapolar CAT into the LA divided into 8 segments. For each segment, 20-sec of bipolar recording was acquired. The DF was defined as the largest peak in the power spectrum (3-15 Hz). The inter-atrial DF gradient was defined as the DF difference between LA and RA appendages. Results: LS-pAF was terminated in 83% (19/23) of the pts: 17 LT, 2 during RA ablation and 4 NT. The figure shows that before ablation bi-atrial DF values of LT pts are significantly lower than that of NT pts for each LA segment as well as for the RAA (p < 0.05). No significant LA-to-RA DF gradient was observed both for LT (0.3±0.5 Hz, p=ns) and NT (0.5±0.03 Hz, p=ns) pts. No significant difference in DF values was observed between LA segments. Conclusions: The lower DF of LT pts is suggestive of a higher organization within both atria compared to NT pts. Our findings suggest that low bi-atrial DF values, but not inter-atrial DF gradient, might be of interest for selecting LS-pAF candidates for sinus rhythm restoration by step-CA.

Methods like Event History Analysis can show the existence of diffusion and part of its nature, but do not study the process itself. Nowadays, thanks to the increasing performance of computers, processes can be studied using computational modeling. This thesis presents an agent-based model of policy diffusion mainly inspired from the model developed by Braun and Gilardi (2006). I first start by developing a theoretical framework of policy diffusion that presents the main internal drivers of policy diffusion - such as the preference for the policy, the effectiveness of the policy, the institutional constraints, and the ideology - and its main mechanisms, namely learning, competition, emulation, and coercion. Therefore diffusion, expressed by these interdependencies, is a complex process that needs to be studied with computational agent-based modeling. In a second step, computational agent-based modeling is defined along with its most significant concepts: complexity and emergence. Using computational agent-based modeling implies the development of an algorithm and its programming. When this latter has been developed, we let the different agents interact. Consequently, a phenomenon of diffusion, derived from learning, emerges, meaning that the choice made by an agent is conditional to that made by its neighbors. As a result, learning follows an inverted S-curve, which leads to partial convergence - global divergence and local convergence - that triggers the emergence of political clusters; i.e. the creation of regions with the same policy. Furthermore, the average effectiveness in this computational world tends to follow a J-shaped curve, meaning that not only time is needed for a policy to deploy its effects, but that it also takes time for a country to find the best-suited policy. To conclude, diffusion is an emergent phenomenon from complex interactions and its outcomes as ensued from my model are in line with the theoretical expectations and the empirical evidence.

Understanding why dispersal is sex-biased in many taxa is still a major concern in evolutionary ecology. Dispersal tends to be male-biased in mammals and female-biased in birds, but counter-examples exist and little is known about sex bias in other taxa. Obtaining accurate measures of dispersal in the field remains a problem. Here we describe and compare several methods for detecting sex-biased dispersal using bi-parentally inherited, codominant genetic markers. If gene flow is restricted among populations, then the genotype of an individual tells something about its origin. Provided that dispersal occurs at the juvenile stage and that sampling is carried out on adults, genotypes sampled from the dispersing sex should on average be less likely (compared to genotypes from the philopatric sex) in the population in which they were sampled. The dispersing sex should be less genetically structured and should present a larger heterozygote deficit. In this study we use computer simulations and a permutation test on four statistics to investigate the conditions under which sex-biased dispersal can be detected. Two tests emerge as fairly powerful. We present results concerning the optimal sampling strategy (varying number of samples, individuals, loci per individual and level of polymorphism) under different amounts of dispersal for each sex. These tests for biases in dispersal are also appropriate for any attribute (e.g. size, colour, status) suspected to influence the probability of dispersal. A windows program carrying out these tests can be freely downloaded from http://www.unil.ch/izea/softwares/fstat.html

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting has stimulated the development of micro-pumps designed to prevent the hemodynamic instability induced by heart luxation for the exposure of target vessels of the posterior wall. Impella (Aachen, Germany) developed micro-pumps with a miniaturized propeller system for both sides of the heart. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of both pumps working together on blood cell integrity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both right and left-sided micro-pumps were implanted in 5 calves (body weight, 72_4 Kg) during 3 h. Blood samples for hematology and hemolysis parameters were drawn hourly. RESULTS: Both pumps performed well with a flow of 3.6 L +/- 0.3 L during the 3 h of the experiment with stable hemodynamic conditions. Mixed venous oxygen saturation was 63.4 +/- 15.2% at baseline and 63.8 +/- 16.3% at the end of the experiment (P = ns). Red cell count, LDH and free plasma hemoglobin were 6.7 +/- 2.1 x 10(12)/L, 1807 +/- 437 IU/L, and 32 +/- 9 mg/L at baseline vs. 6.1 +/- 2.1 x 10(12)/L, 1871 +/- 410 IU/L, and 52 +/- 9 mg/L at the end of the experiment (P = ns for all comparisons). Platelet count exhibited a non-significant drop (872 +/- 126 vs. 715 +/- 22 x 10(9)/L). CONCLUSIONS: This double pump system based on the Archimed screw principle is hematologically well tolerated under conditions of prolonged cardiac assist.
