Slightly < 111 >-oriented 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)03-0.35PbTiO(3) ceramic was prepared using fine powders obtained by means of an alternative and promising chemical oxide precursor method. High quality samples with improved structural, microstructural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were obtained. The dielectric constant value (epsilon similar to 2577) measured at 1 kHz is compared to unpoled < 112 > grain-oriented ceramics while the remanent polarization (P-r similar to 19-1 mu cm(-2)) is compared with random grain-oriented ceramics. These results point out the viability to produce ferroelectric PMN-PT ceramics of very good quality using powder precursors prepared from this chemical method. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Flexible piezo- and pyroelectric composite was made in the thin film form by spin coating. Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) ceramic powder was dispersed in a castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) matrix, providing a composite with 0-3 connectivity. The dielectric data, measured over a wide range of frequency (10(-5) Hz to 105 Hz), shows a loss peak around 100 Hz related with impurities in the polymer matrix. There is also an evidence of a peak in the range 10(-4) Hz, possibly originating from the glass transition temperature T of the polymer. The pyroelectric coefficient at 34 K is 7.0x10(-5) C(.)m(-2.)K(-1) which is higher than that of P-PVDF (1X10(-5) C(.)m(-2.)K(-1)).

Objectives. The purpose of this paper is to modify the conventional calcium fluoro-aluminosilicate glass, which is used in the formation of glass ionomer cements (CIGs) by the niobium addition and to study the properties of GICs obtained.Materials and methods. Sol-gel process was used to prepare the powder at lower temperature than fusion method. Glass-ceramic powder obtained in this way was used to prepare the GICs. The properties such as working and setting times, microhardness and diametral tensile strength were evaluated for the experimental GICs and a commercial luting cement.Results. The ideal powder:liquid (P:L) ratio determined to prepare the experimental GICs was equal to 1:1. The cements prepared using this ratio showed working and setting times similar to the commercial GICs. in mechanical tests it was observed that microhardness and diametral tensile strength of the experimental GICs decreased significantly with the reduction of P:L ratio. on the other hand, the results obtained in microhardness tests indicated that the presence of niobium was a positive factor.Significance. The chemical process allows the development of glass-ceramic powder at 600 degrees C which is the goal of the present paper. It was concluded that GICs containing niobium might be used in dental applications and these results encourage further researches on other compositions. (c) 2007 Academy of Dental Materials. Monofilamentary tapes (150 pm thickness) were prepared by swaging and rolling silver tubes containing the Bi:2212 ceramic (granulation below 20 mum) and the silver powder (about 0.8 mum). The study has been made, among other samples, on tapes with nominal proportions of 0, 10 and 20 wt.% of silver. The samples were characterized by SEM, and by electrical measurements under varying applied magnetic field. The measurements of J(c) showed that the addition of 10 wt.% silver powder is very beneficent to this property, doubling the obtained values at 60 K, while the 20 wt.% tape presented very low J(c). The tape with no silver content showed to have a J(c) as high as 2.2 x 10(5) A/cm(2), at 4.2 K, zero applied magnetic field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The sintering process of nanometric undoped SnO2 powder was studied. No macroscopic shrinkage was observed during the sintening process. Grain growth kinetics investigation showed that surface diffusion is the dominant mechanism in the temperature range 500-1300 degreesC. For temperatures higher than 1300 degreesC, high weight loss was measured, suggesting evaporation-condensation as the dominant mass-transport mechanism. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and mass spectroscopy studies showed that the surface contamination of the SnO2 particles by chemical species like H2O, OH- and CO2, has a strong influence on the role of mass transport controlled by surface diffusion. The preparation of crack-free SnO2 supported membranes requires the development of new strategies of synthesis capable to allow controlled changes of surface chemistry and to improve the processability of supported layers. In this way, the controlled modification of the SnO2 nanoparticle surface by adding capping molecules like Tiron(R) ((OH)(2)C6H2(SO3Na)(2)) during the sol-gel process was studied, aiming to obtain high performance membranes. Colloidal suspensions were prepared by hydrolyzing SnCl4.5H(2)O aqueous solution with NH4OH in presence of Tiron(R). The effect of the amount of Tiro(R) (from I to 20 wt.%) on the structural features of nanoparticles, powder redispersability and particle-solution interface properties was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), quasi-elastic light scattering and electrophoretic mobility measurements. XRPD and EXAFS results showed that the addition of Tiron(R) up to 20 wt.% to colloidal suspensions does not affect the crystallite size of SnO2 primary particles, determined around 2-3 nm. This value is comparable to the hydrodynamic size measured after redispersion of powder prepared with amount of Tiro(R) higher than 7.5 wt.%, indicating the absence of condensation reactions between primary particles after the initial precipitation step. As a consequence the powder with amount of Tiron(R) > 7.5 wt.%, can be fully redispersed in aqueous solution at pH greater than or equal to I I until a nanoparticle concentration of 6 vol.%. The electrophoresis measurements showed a decrease of the isoelectric point by increasing the amount of grafted Tiron(R) at the SnO2 nanoparticle surface, resulting in negatively charged particle-solution interface in all the studied pH range (2-11). These features govern the gelation process favoring the preparation of crack-free SnO2 supported membranes. The control exercised by Tiron(R) modifying agent in the aggregation process allows the fine-tuning of the porosity, from 0.124 to 0.065 cm(3) g(-1), and mean pore size, from 6.4 to 1.9 nm, as the amount of grafted molecules increases from 0 to 10 wt.%. In consequence, the membrane cut-off determined by filtration of polyethylene glycol standard solutions can be screened from 1500 to 3500 g mol(-1). (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline materials of SnO(2) doped with ZnO, WO(3), CoO, Nb(2)O(5), and MoO(3). were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray powder diffraction data were collected with Cu K(alpha) radiation from a Rigaku-Rint 2000 rotating anode source. The structural and profile parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using GSAS [2]. The obtained residual parameters are R(wp) = 11,93% and R(Bragg) = 4,19%. The refined profile parameters indicate no anisotropic crystallite microstrain. The refinement results and Fourier differences calculations indicate that the dopants do not occupy interstitial sites in the crystal structure of SnO(2).

In this work, in situ alpha-SiAlON-SiC ceramic composites were obtained,by, liquid phase sintering, using SiC as reinforcement. Different beta-SiC powder contents (0-20 wt.%), were added to Si3N4-AlN-RE2O3. powder mixtures, and compacted by cold isostatic pressing. The samples were sintered at 1950 degrees C for 1 h, in N-2 atmosphere. Sintered: samples were characterized by relative density, weight loss, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, mechanical properties such as hardness and fracture toughness were determined by Vickers indentation method. Lattice parameters of the alpha' phase did not considerably change with increase of SiC content. However, morphology, average grain size and aspect ratio of the alpha' phase were considerably changed with increase of the SiC content. These behavior influences significantly the mechanical properties of this hard ceramic composite. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Non-linear electrical properties of SnO2-based ceramics were investigated as a function of powder agglomeration condition and as a function of dopant addition. All doped powders presented a single phase, cassiterite, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analysis. The effect of milling was quite evident, with non-milled powder showing higher agglomerated particle size than milled powder. Cr addition seemed to increase the non-linear coefficient. Cu and Mn rendered dense ceramics, but α values for systems with Mn were higher than for systems with Cu.

Tin dioxide is an n-type semiconductor that when doped with other metallic oxides exhibits non-linear electric behavior with high non-linear coefficient values typical of a varistor. In this work, electrical properties of the SnO2.CoO.Ta2O5 and SnO2.CoO.MnO2.Ta2O5 ceramics systems were studied with the objective of analyzing the influence of MnO2 on sintering behavior and electrical properties of these systems. The compacts were prepared by powder mixture process and sintered at 1300°C for 1 hour, in air, using a constant heating rate of 10°C/min. The morphological and structural properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The densities of the sintered ceramics were measured using the Archimedes method. The SnO2.CoO.Ta2O5 and SnO2.CoO.MnO2.Ta2O5 systems presented breakdown fields (Eb) about 3100 V.cm-1 and 3800 V.cm-1, respectively, and non-linear coefficient (α) about 10 and 20, respectively.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to test the following hypothesis: the silica coating on ceramic surface increases the bond strength of resin cement to a ceramic. Materials and Methods: In-Ceram Alumina blocks were made and the ceramic surface was treated: G1 - sandblasting with 110-μm aluminum oxide particles; G2 - Rocatec System: tribochemicai silica coating (Rocatec-Pre powder + Rocatec-Plus powder + Rocatec-Sil); G3 - CoJet System: silica coating (CoJet-Sand) + ESPE-Sil. The ceramic blocks were cemented to composite blocks with Panavia F resin cement (under a load of 750 g/1 min). The cemented blocks were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 7 days and sectioned along the x and y axes with a diamond disk. Samples with an adhesive area of ca 0.8 mm 2 (n = 45) were obtained. The samples were attached to an adapted device for the microtensile test, which was performed in a universal testing machine (EMIC) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Results: The obtained results were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test. Mean values of tensile strength (MPa) and standard deviation values were: (G1) 16.8 ± 3.2; (G2) 30.6 ± 4.5; (G3) 33.0 ± 5.0. G2 and 63 presented greater tensile strength than G1. There was no significant difference between G2 and G3. All the failures took place at the ceramic/resin cement interface. Conclusion: The silica coating (Rocatec or CoJet systems) of the ceramic surface increased the bond strength between the Panavia F resin cement and alumina-based ceramic.

Sr0.5Ba0.5Bi2Nb2O 9 ceramic was prepared by a conventional solid state reaction method and studied using X-ray powder diffraction and dielectric measurements. At room temperature, an orthorhombic structure was confirmed and their parameters were obtained using the Rietveld method. Dielectric properties were studied in a broad range of temperatures and frequencies. Typical relaxor behaviour was observed with strong dispersion of the complex relative dielectric permittivity. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant Tm decreases with increasing frequency, and shifts towards higher temperature side. The activation energy Ea≈0·194±0·03 eV and freezing temperature Ta≈371±2 K values were found using the Vogel-Fulcher relationship. Conduction process in the material may be due to the hopping of charge carriers at low temperatures and small polarons and/or singly ionised oxygen vacancies at higher temperatures. © 2010 Maney Publishing.

An investigation on the sinterization of Gd:CeO2 (Ce 0.85Gd0.15O1.9-δ ceramic system) 3-10 nm nanoparticles in pressed bodies was done. The heating rate was taken as a key parameter and two competing sinterization processes were identified, associated with different diffusional mechanisms. Using heating rates of 113 C min -1, a high-final density (98 % of the theoretical) was obtained by superposing the two aforementioned mechanisms, resulting in a homogeneous microstructure at lower temperatures. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.
