Introduction: It has been suggested that bone grafts combined with platelet rich plasma (PRP) present greater density than bone grafts without PRP after healing process. However, this result may depend on proportion PRP/autogenous bone (AB) graft used. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze radiographically the influence of the proportion PRP/particulate autogenous bone (AB) graft on bone healing in surgically created criticalsize defects (CSD) in rat calvaria. Material and method: 50 rats were divided into 5 groups: C, AB, AB/PRP-50, AB/PRP-100 and AB/PRP-150. A 5 mm diameter CSD was created in the calvarium of each animal. In Group C the defect was filled by blood clot only. In Group AB the defect was filled with 0.01 mL of AB graft. In groups AB/ RP-50, AB/PRP-100 and AB/PRP-150 the defects were filled with 0.01 mL of AB graft combined with 50, 100 and 150 µL of PRP, respectively. All animals were euthanized at 30 days post-operative. Standardized radiographic images of the rat calvaria were obtained using Digora System (Soredex, Finland). The images were evaluated by three examiners using scores that indicated the percentage of radiopacity of the defect. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). Result: Group C presented radiopacity significantly lower than groups AB, AB/PRP-50, AB/PRP-100 and AB/PRP-150. Group AB/PRP-50 showed radiopacity significantly greater than groups AB/PRP-100 and AB. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the proportion PRP/AB graft influences bone healing in CSD in rat calvaria.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma regarding healing, pain and hemostasis after total knee arthroplasty, by means of a blinded randomized controlled and blinded clinical study. Methods: Forty patients who were going to undergo implantation of a total knee prosthesis were selected and randomized. In 20 of these patients, platelet-rich plasma was applied before the joint capsule was closed. The hemoglobin (mg/dL) and hematocrit (%) levels were assayed before the operation and 24 and 48hours afterwards. The Womac questionnaire and a verbal pain scale were applied and knee range of motion measurements were made up to the second postoperative month. The statistical analysis compared the results with the aim of determining whether there were any differences between the groups at each of the evaluation times. Results: The hemoglobin (mg/dL) and hematocrit (%) measurements made before the operation and 24 and 48hours afterwards did not show any significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). The Womac questionnaire and the range of motion measured before the operation and up to the first two months also did not show any statistical differences between the groups (p > 0.05). The pain evaluation using the verbal scale showed that there was an advantage for the group that received platelet-rich plasma, 24hours, 48hours, one week, three weeks and two months after the operation (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In the manner in which the platelet-rich plasma was used, it was not shown to be effective for reducing bleeding or improving knee function after arthroplasty, in comparison with the controls. There was an advantage on the postoperative verbal pain scale.

This study aims to clinically and macroscopically evaluate the adjuvant therapy with platelet-rich plasma in the form of eyedrops or clot, for corneal ulcers in dogs treated at the Veterinary Ophthalmology Service. We analyzed 20 eyes diagnosed with ulcerative keratitis, divided into two experimental groups. The eyedrop group (GC) was composed of eyes treated topically with eyedrops of autologous plateletrich plasma (PRP), and the clot group (GT) was composed of eyes treated with a platelet-rich clot and covered with a third eyelid for retention of the clot. The groups were evaluated by clinical and macroscopic analysis and by the analysis of epithelial defect reduction, at different times, at three, five, ten, 15 and 30 days, except for the third day in GT. The coverage of the third eyelid was removed on the fifth day. In both groups the inflammation signs reduced, there was an improvement in ocular sensibility and proper repair of epithelial defect. All GT eyes and 70% GC eyes showed complete healing on the fifth day, the remainder of GC completed healing on the tenth day. PRP in the form of eyedrops and clot is an excellent adjuvant therapy to be instituted in the clinical treatment for corneal ulcer in dogs, because it decreases the inflammatory signs and the ocular pain and it potentially assists in healing epithelial defects.

Foram utilizadas as palavras-chave “plasma rich in growth factors”, “platelet-rich plasma”, “oral surgery”, “dental implants”, “sinus lift”, “third molar surgery” e “bone regeneration”.

On the basis of the knowledge that the entheses between the plantar fascia and the calcaneus may exhibit a varied pathology, we considered the need to value the pathological factors by illustrating the anatomical changes in the Plantar Fascia Syndrome (PFS) with easy-to-obtain images which allowed us to substantiate our claims. Accordingly, we analized the anatomical (Orts Llorca, 1977; Llusá, 2007; Sobotta, 2007; Domenech Mateu, 2012; Rodriguez Baeza 2012) and biomechanical (Arandes, 1956; Viladot 1979; Caturla, 2001; Safe, 2001) literature in order to better know the location of the pathology and also to assess the functional reasons that could favor this disease. A study of the affected area by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) revealed the presence of bone affections such as bone edema, subchondral lesions and several other bone pathologies together with fascia intrinsic injuries such as myxoid degeneration, intrasubstance fissures and perifascial edematous lesions (Larroca, 2013; Conejero, 2014). Injuries not properly treated during the acute phase can evolve into chronic processes which, month after month, become ever more difficult to resolve. In addition, as seen throughout this study, there are changes in the anatomical normality of the foot usually associated with pathological conditions of the plantar fascia. Once the pathological aspects of PFS are identified and their location is established, clinical manifestations should be registered in order to define this syndrome. Pain is the main symptom in patients with PFS and is associated, in many occasions, with tightness or stiffness of the plantar area, limited mobility of the arch of the ankle and, inevitably, a progressive functional deterioration. Thus, that sharp and stabbing pain felt when one puts the foot on the floor after a period of rest located in the front lower face of the heel and irradiating and/or projecting to the middle of the sole of the foot would be synonymous with Plantar Fascia Syndrome (PFS)...
