In order to study the extraction pattern of protactinium in different types of extracting agents and compare the similarity of patterns of extraction with dubnium and thereby unraveling its chemistry, solvent extraction of protactinium(V) with methyl-iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC) and methyl-iso-butyl ketone (MIBK) was studied using Pa-233 as a radiotracer. The extraction efficiencies of Pa were determined as a function of shaking time, concentrations of mineral acids, and extractant concentrations using the two extractants. The results show that MIBK is more suitable for the extraction of protactinium than MIBC in benzene. Furthermore, the effect of the F anion is also discussed.

We prepared four new ionic liquids consisting of N-methyl-N-allylpyrrolidinium cation in conjunction with anions including iodide, nitrate, thiocyanate, and dicyanamide, respectively, and measured their physical properties of density, viscosity, and conductivity. Owing to the relatively lower melting point of electroactive N-methyl-N-allylpyrrolidinium iodide, in combination with three other nonelectroactive ionic liquids, we could construct solvent-free electrolytes possessing high iodide concentrations for dye-sensitized solar cells. We correlated temperature-dependent electrolyte viscosity with molar conductivity and triiodide mobility through applying an empirical Walden's rule and a modified Stokes-Einstein equation, respectively. We have further found that these anions (nitrate, thiocyanate, and dicyanamide) have different influences on surface states and electron transport in the mesoporous titania film, resulting in different photovoltages and photocurrents of dye-sensitized solar cells.

The toughening effect of the shell content of a core-shell latex polymer poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)-cs-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on its blends with polycarbonate (PC) was studied. The changes of mechanical properties, morphology, and compatibility of the blends of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA with the change of the shell thickness of PBA-cs-PMMA were investigated. It is interesting to notice that mechanical properties of the blends are very sensitive to the shell thickness (i.e., shell content), and that there is a possibility to adjust the impact and tensile properties of the blend by selecting a PBA-cs-PMMA with a proper core/shell ratio. Hence, a modified PC material with balanced mechanical properties may be prepared.

Heteropolyacids (HPAs) supported on the activated carbon (SiW12/C and PW12/C) have been used to study the formation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Compared to the conventional commercial catalysts, Amberlyst-15 resin and HZSM-5, HPAs supported catalysts have been proved to have much higher catalytic activity under lower temperature, especially selectivity to MTBE is up to 100%. It may be due to the high acid strength of HPAs as well as the specialty of heteropolyanion.

Two etching techniques are used to reveal the morphology of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA blend. One is based on acetic acid (CH3COOH) solutions, whereas the other uses CCl4/ C2H5OH (3/1 v/v). The latter approach shows to be more appropriate and successful for revealing the morphology of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA blend.

In the present work, experimental density measurements are reported along with the derived thermodynamic properties, such as the isothermal compressibility (?T), the isobaric expansivity (ap), and the thermal pressure coefficient (?v) for imidazolium-, pyridinium-, pyrrolidinium-, and piperidinium-based ionic liquids (ILs), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate [C2mim][CF3SO3], 3-methyl-1-propylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C3mpy][NTf2], 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C3mpyr][NTf2], 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C4mpyr][NTf2], and 1-methyl-1-propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C3mpip][NTf2] in the pressure (0.10 <P/MPa <35.00) and temperature (293.15 <T/K <393.15) domains. These ILs were chosen to provide an understanding of the influence of the cation and anion on the properties under study. Experimental densities are correlated with the Tait equation with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) better than 0.02 %. It is shown that experimental densities are in good agreement with the densities obtained by the predictive method previously proposed by us.

The occurrence of the fuel oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in the environment has received considerable scientific attention. The pollutant is frequently found in the groundwater due to leaking of underground storage tanks or pipelines. Concentrations of more than several mg/L MTBE were detected in groundwater at several places in the US and Germany in the last few years. In situ chemical oxidation is a promising treatment method for MTBE-contaminated plumes. This research investigated the reaction kinetics for the oxidation of MTBE by permanganate. Batch tests demonstrated that the oxidation of MTBE by permanganate is second order overall and first order individually with respect to permanganate and MTBE. The second-order rate constant was 1.426 x 10(-6) L/mg/h. The influence of pH on the reaction rate was demonstrated to have no significant effect. However, the rate of MTBE oxidation by potassium permanganate is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than of other advanced oxidation processes. The slower rates of MTBE oxidation by permanganate limit the applicability of this process for rapid MTBE cleanup strategies. However, permanganate oxidation of MTBE has potential for passive oxidation risk management strategies. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Iron and mixed iron aluminium pillared montmorillonites prepared by partial hydrolysis method was subjected to room temperature exchange with transition metals of the first series. The materials exhibit good structural as well as thermal stability. Exchanged metals were found to be present inside the porous network, in the environs of the pillars. Mixed pillaring resulted in the intercalation of Al 13 like polymers in which Al is partially substituted by Fe. The acidic structure was followed by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and cumene cracking test reaction. Weak and medium sites overshadow the strong sites in all systems. However, exchange with metals increases the number of strong sites. The prepared materials are efficient catalysts for gas phase MTBE synthesis. The catalytic activity can be well correlated with the total amount of weak and medium acid sites.

In the present study, it was evaluated the susceptibility of prostatic lesions in male adult rats exposed to Di-N-butyl-phthalate during fetal and lactational periods and submitted to MNU plus testosterone carcinogenesis protocol. Pregnant females were distributed into four experimental groups: CN (negative control); CMNU (MNU control); TDBP100 (100 mg/kg of DBP); TDBP500 (500 mg/kg of DBP). Females from the TDBP groups received DBP, by gavage, from gestation day 15 (GD15) to postnatal day 21 (DPN21), while C animals received the vehicle (corn oil). CMNU, TDBP100, and TDBP500 groups received a single intraperitoneal injection of MNU (50 mg/kg) on the sixth postnatal week. After that, testosterone cypionate was administered subcutaneously two times a week (2 mg/kg) for 24 weeks. The animals were euthanized on PND220. Distal segment fragments of the ventral (VP) and dorsolateral prostate (DLP) were fixed and processed for histopathological analysis. Protein extracts from ventral prostate were obtained, and western blotting was performed to AR, ERα, MAPK (ERK1/2), and pan-AKT. Stereological analysis showed an increase in the epithelial compartment in TDBP100 and TDBP500 compared to CN. In general, there was increase in the incidence of inflammation and metaplasia/dysplasia in the DBP-treated groups, mainly in DLP, compared to CN and CMNU. Proliferation index was significant higher in TDBP500 and PIN (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia) was more frequent in this group compared to CMNU. Western blot assays showed an increase in the expressions of AR and MAPK (ERK1/2) in the TDBP100 compared to CN, and ERα and AKT expressions were higher in the TDBP500 group compared do CN. These results showed that different doses of DBP during prostate organogenesis in Wistar rats could increase the incidence of premalignant lesions in initiated rats inducing distinct biological responses in the adulthood. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Petroleum products leaking from under ground storage tanks have raised concerns regarding the quality of ground water resources, The concerns about the environmental behavior and rate of MTBE as an oxygenated additive prompted this iuvestigation to explore the technical characteristics of MTBE in comparison to ETBF. Evaluation of the existing literature suggests that ETBE has more favorable characteristics than MTBE. Findings in this research suggest that ETBE is a technically sound oxygenated octane enhancer, which can help refiners meet specificatios for cleaner burning gasoline.

This thesis work is part of a larger synthesis project about alkyd resins from natural sources, copolymerized with methyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylates, which wil be used for coatings purpose. The aim is to control the copolymerization of methyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylate in RAFT miniemulsion. The research was divided into three parts. First the homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate was studied by varying different parameters such as the amount of surfactant, the amount of initiator, pH, and especially the RAFT agent. Then two macro RAFT agents were synthesized, as suggested by the existing literature. Finally, the two monomers were copolymerized using both the RAFT used for the homopolymerization and those synthesized in the second stage. To verify the obtained control over the polymerization, the synthesized polymers were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography, GPC, thus finding their molecular weight and its polydispersity.

Statins possess anti-inflammatory effects that may contribute to their ability to slow atherogenesis, whereas nitric oxide (NO) also influences inflammatory cell adhesion. This study aimed to determine whether a novel NO-donating pravastatin derivative, NCX 6550 [(1S-[1∝(ßS*,dS*),2∝,6a∝,8ß-(R*),8a∝]]-1,2,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-ß,δ,6-trihydroxy-2-methyl-8-(2-methyl-1-oxobutoxy)-1-naphthalene-heptanoic acid 4-(nitrooxy)butyl ester)], has greater anti-inflammatory properties compared with pravastatin in normal and atherosclerotic apolipoprotein E receptor knockout (ApoE-/-) mice. C57BL/6 and ApoE-/- mice were administered pravastatin (40 mg/kg), NCX 6550 (48.5 mg/kg), or vehicle orally for 5 days. Ex vivo studies assessed splenocyte adhesion to arterial segments and splenocyte reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. NCX 6550 significantly reduced splenocyte adhesion to artery segments in both C57BL/6 (8.8 ± 1.9% versus 16.6 ± 6.7% adhesion; P < 0.05) and ApoE-/- mice (9.3 ± 2.9% versus 23.4 ± 4.6% adhesion; P < 0.05) concomitant with an inhibition of endothelial intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression. NCX 6550 also significantly reduced phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate-induced ROS production that was enhanced in isolated ApoE-/- splenocytes. Conversely, pravastatin had no significant effects on adhesion in normal or ApoE-/- mice but reduced the enhanced ROS production from ApoE-/- splenocytes. In separate groups of ApoE-/- mice, NCX 6550 significantly enhanced endothelium-dependent relaxation to carbachol in aortic segments precon-tracted with phenylephrine (-logEC50, 6.37 ± 0.37) compared with both vehicle-treated (-logEC50, 5.81 ± 0.15; P < 0.001) and pravastatin-treated (-logEC50, 5.57 ± 0.45; P < 0.05) mice. NCX 6550 also significantly reduced plasma monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 levels (648.8 pg/ml) compared with both vehicle (1191.1 pg/ml; P < 0.001) and pravastatin (847 ± 71.0 pg/ml; P < 0.05) treatment. These data show that NCX 6550 exerts superior anti-inflammatory actions compared with pravastatin, possibly through NO-related mechanisms.
