This thesis developed a practical, cost effective, easy-to-use method for measuring the vertical displacements of bridges using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, which includes the curvature and inclination approaches. These approaches were validated by the numerical simulation tests on a full scale bridge and the laboratory-based tests. In doing so, a novel frictionless FBG inclination sensor with extremely high sensitivity and resolution has also been developed and validated.

A new, and very simple spectrometer based on birefringent fiber is described. A resolution of 0.02 angstrom has been achieved, and the system has been used to measure diode laser chirp. A length of 10km of fiber would be sufficient to resolve single mode line widths.

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study focused on the tensile fibre fracture toughness characterisation of hybrid plain weave composite laminates using non-standardized Overheight Compact Tension (OCT) specimens. The position as well as the strain field ahead of the crack tip in the specimens was determined using a digital speckle photogrammetry system. The limitation on the applicability of standard data reduction schemes for the determination of the intralaminar fibre fracture toughness of composites is presented and discussed. A methodology based on the numerical evaluation of the strain energy release rate using the J-integral method is proposed to derive new geometric correction functions for the determination of stress intensity factor for alternative composite specimen geometries. A comparison between different methods currently available to compute the intralaminar fracture toughness in composites is also presented and discussed. Good agreement between numerical and experimental results using the proposed methodology was obtained.

Accurate measurement of abdominal aortic aneurysms is necessary to predict rupture risk and, more recently, to follow aneurysm sac behavior following endovascular repair. Up until this point, aneurysm diameter has been the most common measurement utilized for these purposes. Although aneurysm diameter is predictive of rupture, accurate measurement is hindered by such factors as aortic tortuosity and interobserver variability, and it does not account for variations in morphology such as saccular aneurysms. Additionally, decreases in aneurysm diameter do not completely describe the somewhat complex remodeling seen following endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms. Measurement of aneurysm volume has the advantage of describing aneurysm morphology in a multidimensional fashion, but it has not been readily available or easily measured until recently. This has changed with the introduction of commercially available software tools that permit quicker and easier to perform volume measurements. Whether it is time for volume to replace, or compliment, diameter is the subject of the current debate.

A compact scheme for simultaneous temperature and surrounding refractive index (SRI) measurement using two long-period gratings (LPGs) of different periods inscribed side-by-side in a single piece of a double-cladding fibre is presented. One of the LPGs is sensitive to both SRI and temperature, whilst the second is sensitive to temperature only.

A report is presented on the interesting bending effect of cladding mode resonances in fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs). It is observed that a serial of new cladding mode resonances can arise under bending and the new and the original cladding mode resonances have opposite trends in amplitude change and wavelength shift when the curvature varies. The discovery provides an effective new way to discriminate between bend and strain or bend and temperature when using only a single uniform FBG.

A multicore fibre (MCF) sensor to measure the radial deformation of a compliant cylinder under compression is presented. The sensor is connectorised and need not be permanently bonded to the test object. A differential measurement technique using FBGs written into the MCF makes the sensor temperature insensitive. FBG measurement of axial strain of a cylinder under compression is also reported.

We present an optical bend sensor based on a Bragg grating written in an eccentric core polymer optical fibre. The grating wavelength shifts are studied as a function of bend curvature and fibre orientation and the device exhibits strong fibre orientation dependence, wide bend curvature range of ± 22.7 m-1 and high bend sensitivity of 63 pm/m-1, which is 80 times higher than the reported sensor based on an offset-FBG in standard single mode silica fibre.
