Anomalous thermal behavior on the EPR linewidths has been observed for Gd impurities diluted in CexA1-xBn (A=La,Y, B=Ir,Os,Rh,Pd) intermediate-valence compounds. In this work we show that the exchange interaction between the local magnetic moments and the intermediate-valence host ions has an important contribution to the relaxation rates of the local moments. We calculated the relaxation, using the Redfield formalism and the ideas contained in the interconfigurational fluctuation model of Hirst. We show that the exchange interaction contribution has an exponential dependence on the excitation energy of the intermediate-valence ions. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

We perform a self-consistent relativistic RPA calculation for the isobaric analogue and Gamow-Teller resonances based on relativistic mean field theory results for the ground states of 48Ca, 90Zr and 208Pb. We use the parameter set NL1 for the σ, ω and ρ mesons, and experimental values for the pion and nucleon. An extra parameter, related to the intensity of the contact term in the pion-exchange interaction, is crucial to reproduce the latter resonances. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra have been obtained at room temperature and at X-band in powders of SnO2 doped with Mn from 0.3 to 10% and submitted to heat treatment from 500 to 900 °C. Mn ions are probably located at particle surfaces as Mn2+, evidenced by its single EPR line which narrows by the exchange interaction effect due to particle growth observed by the BET technique. In samples doped above 1% formation Of Mn3O4 is detected on particle surfaces and a small quantity of Mn is thermally diffused into the bulk as Mn4+. Powders compacted and sintered at 1300 °C confirmed that Mn2+ ions remain at grain boundaries acting as densifying agent.

The preparation, crystal structure and magnetic properties of a new oxalate-containing copper(II) chain of formula {[(CH3)(4)N](2)]Cu(C2O4)(2)] center dot H2O}(n) (1) [(CH3)(4)N+ = tetramethylammonium cation] are reported. The structure of 1 consists of anionic oxalate-bridged copper(II) chains, tetramethylammoniun cations and crystallization water molecules. Each copper(II) ion in 1 is surrounded by three oxalate ligands, one being bidentate and the other two exhibiting bis-bidenate coordination modes. Although all the tris-chelated copper(H) units from a given chain exhibit the same helicity, adjacent chains have opposite helicities and then an achiral structure results. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 show the occurrence of a weak ferromagnetic interaction through the oxalate bridge [J = +1.14(1)cm(-1), the Hamiltonian being defined as H = -J Sigma nm S-i . S-j]. This value is analyzed and discussed in the light of available magnetostructural data for oxalate-bridged copper(H) complexes with the same out-of-plane exchange pathway. We have studied, using double ratio of QCD (spectral) sum rules, the ratio between the masses of Tcc and X(3872) assuming that they are respectively described by the D−D∗ and D− ¯D∗ molecular currents. We found (within our approximation) that the masses of these two states are almost degenerate. Since the pion exchange interaction between these mesons is exactly the same, we conclude that if the observed X(3872) meson is a D ¯D∗ + c.c. molecule, then the DD∗ molecule should also exist with approximately the same mass. An extension of the analysis to the b-quark case leads to the same conclusion. We also study the SU(3) breakings for the T s Q Q /TQ Q mass ratios. Motivated by the recent Belle observation of two Zb states, we revise our determination of Xb by combining results from exponential and FESR sum rules.

In this thesis methods of EPR spectroscopy were used to investigate polyion-counterion interactions in polyelectrolyte solutions. The fact that EPR techniques are local methods is exploited and by employing spin-carrying (i.e., EPR-active) probe ions it is possible to examine polyelectrolytes from the counterions’ point of view. It was possible to gain insight into i) the dynamics and local geometry of counterion attachment, ii) conformations and dynamics of local segments of the polyion in an indirect manner, and iii) the spatial distribution of spin probe ions that surround polyions in solution. Analysis of CW EPR spectra of dianion nitroxide spin probe Fremy’s salt (FS, potassium nitrosodisulfonate) in solutions of cationic PDADMAC polyelectrolyte revealed that FS ions and PDADMAC form transient ion pairs with a lifetime of less than 1 ns. This effect was termed as dynamic electrostatic attachment (DEA). By spectral simulation taking into account the rotational dynamics as a uniaxial Brownian reorientation, also the geometry of the attached state could be characterized. By variation of solvent, the effect of solvent viscosity and permittivity were investigated and indirect information of the polyelectrolyte chain motion was obtained. Furthermore, analysis of CW EPR data also indicates that in mixtures of organic solvent/water PDADMAC chains are preferentially solvated by the organic solvent molecules, while in purely aqueous mixtures the PDADMAC chain segments were found in different conformations depending on the concentration ratio R of FS counterions to PDADMAC repeat units.Broadenings in CW EPR spectra of FS ions were assigned to spin-exchange interaction and hence contain information on the local concentrations and distributions of the counterions. From analysis of these broadenings in terms of a modified cylindrical cell approach of polyelectrolyte theory, radial distribution functions for the FS ions in the different solvents were obtained. This approach breaks down in water above a threshold value of R, which again indicates that PDADMAC chain conformations are altered as a function of R. Double electron-electron resonance (DEER) measurements of FS ions were carried out to probe the distribution of attached counterions along polyelectrolyte chains. For a significant fraction of FS spin probes in solution with a rigid-rod model polyelectrolyte containing charged Ru2+-centers, a bimodal distance distribution was found that nicely reproduced the spacings of direct and next-neighbor Ru2+-centers along the polyelectrolyte: 2.35 and 4.7 nm. For the system of FS/PDADMAC, DEER data could be simulated by assuming a two-state distribution of spin probes, one state corresponding to a homogeneous (3-dimensional) distribution of spin probes in the polyelectrolyte bulk and the other to a linear (1-dimensional) distribution of spin probes that are electrostatically condensed along locally extended PDADMAC chain segments. From this analysis it is suggested that the PDADMAC chains form locally elongated structures of a size of at least ~5 nm.
