The Raman spectrum of ethyl chloroacetate has been studied at 13° C., 28° C. and 78° C. The carbonyl frequency was found to be split up into two due to the presence of rotational isomers. The higher frequency line due to thecis isomer was found to decrease in intensity with temperature. It appears that the gauche isomer will predominate in the vapour state. Altogether thirty-eight Raman lines have been recorded. Reasonable assignments for the observed Raman lines were made in comparison with ethyl acetate spectrum.

Raman spectrum of a single crystal of lanthanum ethyl sulphate has been recorded for the first time using the λ 2537 radiation Forty-one lines have been identified out of which eight belong to the lattice oscillations, seven to the internal vibrations of the water molecule and the remaining twenty-six to the internal vibrations of the ethyl sulphate group. The Raman spectrum of ethyl sulphate (liquid) has also been recorded using the λ 4358 excitation and is compared with the spectrum of lanthanum ethyl sulphate. Thirty Raman lines could be identified in the spectrum of ethyl sulphate, of which fourteen are recorded for the first time. Probable assignments of the observed frequencies are also given. The sulphate group is found to have O-SO3 structure in lanthanum ethyl sulphate, while it has a co-ordination {Mathematical expression} in ethyl sulphate.

Monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) transport lactate and protons across cell membranes. During intense exercise, lactate and protons accumulate in the exercising muscle and are transported to the plasma. In the horse, MCTs are responsible for the majority of lactate and proton removal from exercising muscle, and are therefore also the main mechanism to hinder the decline in pH in muscle cells. Two isoforms, MCT1 and MCT4, which need an ancillary protein CD147, are expressed in equine muscle. In the horse, as in other species, MCT1 is predominantly expressed in oxidative fibres, where its likely role is to transport lactate into the fibre to be used as a fuel at rest and during light work, and to remove lactate during intensive exercise when anaerobic energy production is needed. The expression of CD147 follows the fibre type distribution of MCT1. These proteins were detected in both the cytoplasm and sarcolemma of muscle cells in the horse breeds studied: Standardbred and Coldblood trotters. In humans, training increases the expression of both MCT1 and MCT4. In this study, the proportion of oxidative fibres in the muscle of Norwegian-Swedish Coldblood trotters increased with training. Simultaneously, the expression of MCT1 and CD147, measured immunohistochemically, seemed to increase more in the cytoplasm of oxidative fibres than in the fast fibre type IIB. Horse MCT4 antibody failed to work in immunohistochemistry. In the future, a quantitative method should be introduced to examine the effect of training on muscle MCT expression in the horse. Lactate can be taken up from plasma by red blood cells (RBCs). In horses, two isoforms, MCT1 and MCT2, and the ancillary protein CD147 are expressed in RBC membranes. The horse is the only species studied in which RBCs have been found to express MCT2, and the physiological role of this protein in RBCs is unknown. The majority of horses express all three proteins, but 10-20% of horses express little or no MCT1 or CD147. This leads to large interindividual variation in the capacity to transport lactate into RBCs. Here, the expression level of MCT1 and CD147 was bimodally distributed in three studied horse breeds: Finnhorse, Standardbred and Thoroughbred. The level of MCT2 expression was distributed unimodally. The expression level of lactate transporters could not be linked to performance markers in Thoroughbred racehorses. In the future, better performance indexes should be developed to better enable the assessment of whether the level of MCT expression affects athletic performance. In human subjects, several mutations in MCT1 have been shown to cause decreased lactate transport activity in muscle and signs of myopathy. In the horse, two amino acid sequence variations, one of which was novel, were detected in MCT1 (V432I and K457Q). The mutations found in horses were in different areas compared to mutations found in humans. One mutation (M125V) was detected in CD147. The mutations found could not be linked with exercise-induced myopathy. MCT4 cDNA was sequenced for the first time in the horse, but no mutations could be detected in this protein.

The Raman spectra of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol and n-butyl alcohol have been recorded using λ 2537 excitation. 35, 49, 45 and 51 Raman lines respectively have been identified in the spectra of these alcohols, in addition to the rotational 'wings'. In each case, a large number of additional lines have been recorded. The existence of Raman lines with frequency shifts greater than 3800 cm.-1, first reported by Bolla in the spectrum of ethyl alcohol, has been confirmed. Similar high-frequency shift Raman lines have also been recorded in the spectrum of methyl alcohol. They have been assigned as combinations. Proper assignments have been given for the prominent Raman lines appearing in the spectra of these alcohols.

A mechanism for the isomerisation of ethyl 1-ethoxycarbonyl-2-oxocyclopentylacetate (I) into a cyclohexane β-keto-ester as proceeding through an intermediate bicyclic /gb-diketone (VII) has been considered as an alternative mechanism to one earlier suggested.1 The determination of the structure of the isomerised β-keto-ester as 2, 3-diethoxycarbonylcyclohexanone (V) has provided support for the earlier mechanism.

In this study, biodegradable blend of Poly (Ethylene-co-Vinyl Acetate) (EVA) and Ethyl Cellulose (EC) were prepared. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer was used as an interfacial compatibilizer to enhance adhesion between EVA and EC. The melt blended compatibilized biocomposites were examined for mechanical and thermal properties as per the ASTM standards. It has been found that the EC has a reinforcing effect on EVA leading to enhanced tensile strength and also impart biodegradability. Thus, a high loading of 50% EC could be added without compromising Much on the mechanical properties. Analysis of the tensile data using predictive theories showed an enhanced interaction of the dispersed phase (EC) and the matrix (EVA). The compatibilizing effects of EVOH on these blends were confirmed by the significant improvement in the mechanical properties comparable with neat EVA as also observed by SEM microscopy. The TGA thermograms exhibits two-stage degradation and as EC content increases, the onset temperature for thermal degradation reduces. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report preliminary experiments on the ternary-liquid mixture, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)+water (W)+secondary butyl alcohol (sBA)-a promising system for the realization of the quadruple critical point (QCP). The unusual tunnel-shaped phase diagram shown by this system is characterized and visualized by us in the form of a prismatic phase diagram. Light-scattering experiments reveal that (MEK+W+sBA) shows near three-dimensional-Ising type of critical behavior near the lower critical solution temperatures, with the susceptibility exponent (gamma) in the range of 1.217 <=gamma <= 1.246. The correlation length amplitudes (xi(o)) and the critical exponent (nu) of the correlation length (xi) are in the ranges of 3.536 <=xi(o)<= 4.611 A and 0.619 <=nu <= 0.633, respectively. An analysis in terms of the effective susceptibility exponent (gamma(eff)) shows that the critical behavior is of the Ising type for MEK concentrations in the ranges of 0.1000 <= X <= 0.1250 and X >= 0.3000. But, for the intermediate range of 0.1750 <= X < 0.3000, the system shows a tendency towards mean-field type of critical behavior. The advantages of the system (MEK+W+sBA) over the system (3-methylpyridine+water+heavy water+potassium Iodide) for the realization of a QCP are outlined.

A new case of the uncommon cis-trans enantiomerism is presented. The titled anhydride adducts were prepared in good yields by the known reaction of three 6-arylfulvenes with maleic anhydride (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl and p-anisyl). The exo adducts were converted to the corresponding imides by reaction with (1S)-1-(naphth-1-yl)ethylamine in similar to 80% yields, and the resulting diastereomeric imides separated by silica gel column chromatography. They were hydrolysed and recyclised to the chiral anhydrides, in `one-pot' with 10% NaOH-EtOH, followed by treatment with 2 M HCl, in similar to 40% yields. The titled anhydrides were thus obtained in homochiral form, in enantiomeric purities (generally) of similar to 90% as indicated by chiral HPLC. The chiral anhydrides were also converted to the corresponding imides (presumably stereospecifically), by treatment with ammonia solution in excellent yields. The crystal structure of one of the above diastereomeric imides (derived from 6-phenylfulvene) was determined, and based on the known (S)-configuration of the naphthylethylamine moiety, the `configurations' of the original anhydride adducts were assigned. The supramolecular structures of eight aryl protected ethyl-6-methyl-4-phenyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine- 5-carboxylates have been analyzed to determine the role of different functional groups on the molecular geometry, conformational characteristics and the packing of these molecules in the crystal lattice. Out of these the para fluoro substituted compound on the aryl ring exhibits conformational polymorphism, due to the different conformation of the ester moiety. This behaviour has been characterized using both powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry performed on both these polymorphs. The compounds pack via the cooperative interplay of strong N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C intermolecular dimers and chains forming a sheet like structure. In addition, weak C-H center dot center dot center dot O=C and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions impart additional stability to the crystal packing.
