Design and implementation of the embedded capacitance layers for decoupling of wireless sensor nodes
Resumo:
In this paper, the embedded capacitance material (ECM) is fabricated between the power and ground layers of the wireless sensor nodes, forming an integrated capacitance to replace the large amount of decoupling capacitors on the board. The ECM material, whose dielectric constant is 16, has the same size of the wireless sensor nodes of 3cm*3cm, with a thickness of only 14μm. Though the capacitance of a single ECM layer being only around 8nF, there are two reasons the ECM layers can still replace the high frequency decoupling capacitors (100nF in our case) on the board. The first reason is: the parasitic inductance of the ECM layer is much lower than the surface mount capacitors'. A smaller capacitance value of the ECM layer could achieve the same resonant frequency of the surface mount decoupling capacitors. Simulation and measurement fit this assumption well. The second reason is: more than one layer of ECM material are utilized during the design step to get a parallel connection of the several ECM capacitance layers, finally leading to a larger value of the capacitance and smaller value of parasitic. Characterization of the ECM is carried out by the LCR meter. To evaluate the behaviors of the ECM layer, time and frequency domain measurements are performed on the power-bus decoupling of the wireless sensor nodes. Comparison with the measurements of bare PCB board and decoupling capacitors solution are provided to show the improvement of the ECM layer. Measurements show that the implementation of the ECM layer can not only save the space of the surface mount decoupling capacitors, but also provide better power-bus decoupling to the nodes.

A novel surface molecularly-imprinted (MI) material to detect myoglobin (Myo) using gold screen printed electrodes (SPE) was developed. The sensitive detection was carry out by introducing a carboxylic polyvinyl chloride (PVC-COOH) layer on gold SPE surface. Myo was attached to the surface of gold SPE/PVC-COOH and the vacant spaces around it were filled by polymerizing acrylamide and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (cross-linker). This polymerization was initiated by ammonium persulphate. After removing the template, the obtained material was able to rebind Myo and discriminate it among other interfering species. Various characterization techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) confirmed the surface modification. This sensor seemed a promising tool for screening Myo in point-of-care.

Cancer is a major burden in today's society and one of the leading causes of death in industrialised countries. Various avenues for the detection of cancer exist, most of which rely on standard methods, such as histology, ELISA, and PCR. Here we put the focus on nanomechanical biosensors derived from atomic force microscopy cantilevers. The versatility of this novel technology has been demonstrated in different applications and in some ways surpasses current technologies, such as microarray, quartz crystal microbalance and surface plasmon resonance. The technology enables label free biomarker detection without the necessity of target amplification in a total cellular background, such as BRAF mutation analysis in malignant melanoma. A unique application of the cantilever array format is the analysis of conformational dynamics of membrane proteins associated to surface stress changes. Another development is characterisation of exhaled breath which allows assessment of a patient's condition in a non-invasive manner.

Recent evidence suggests the existence of a hepatoportal vein glucose sensor, whose activation leads to enhanced glucose use in skeletal muscle, heart, and brown adipose tissue. The mechanism leading to this increase in whole body glucose clearance is not known, but previous data suggest that it is insulin independent. Here, we sought to further determine the portal sensor signaling pathway by selectively evaluating its dependence on muscle GLUT4, insulin receptor, and the evolutionarily conserved sensor of metabolic stress, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). We demonstrate that the increase in muscle glucose use was suppressed in mice lacking the expression of GLUT4 in the organ muscle. In contrast, glucose use was stimulated normally in mice with muscle-specific inactivation of the insulin receptor gene, confirming independence from insulin-signaling pathways. Most importantly, the muscle glucose use in response to activation of the hepatoportal vein glucose sensor was completely dependent on the activity of AMPK, because enhanced hexose disposal was prevented by expression of a dominant negative AMPK in muscle. These data demonstrate that the portal sensor induces glucose use and development of hypoglycemia independently of insulin action, but by a mechanism that requires activation of the AMPK and the presence of GLUT4.

Ultra thin films based on CoFe were prepared from a composite target employing thermal evaporation. The microstructure of the films was modified by thermal annealing. The relationship between microstructure and magnetic properties of the films was investigated using techniques like glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The GXRD and TEM investigations showed an onset of crystallization of CoFe at around 373 K. The magnetic softness of the films improved with thermal annealing but at higher annealing temperature it is found to be deteriorating. Annealing inducedmodification of surface morphology of the alloy thin filmswas probed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface smoothening was observed with thermal annealing and the observed magnetic properties correlate well with surface modifications induced by thermal annealing

The wide-ranging survey of twisted growth in polymers by Lotz and Cheng cites extensive evidence consistent with the relief of surface stress being the underlying cause. This complementary note contributes to the discussion by making three main points. First, it is necessary to go further and explain the key issue of how a consistent twist is maintained when, as commonly, this habit has a lower symmetry than the crystallographic lattice. Detailed study has shown that, in polyethylene, this occurs by reorganization of the initial fold surfaces. Second, the suggested explanation by Keith and Padden that. in polyethylene, the asymmetric habit derives from molecules adding to lamellae with inclined fold surfaces is invalid being doubly inconsistent with observation. Third, twisting has now been linked to faster growth by study of row structures in polyethylene. This produces inherently rough fold surfaces in Regime II whose internal stresses drive reorganization and twisting. For slower (Regime I) growth, fold surfaces form with and maintain ordered packing so providing no basis for twisting. These new insights radically alter the context of twisted growth and provide a firm factual basis for further work. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In various attempts to relate the behaviour of highly-elastic liquids in complex flows to their rheometrical behaviour, obvious candidates for study have been the variation of shear viscosity with shear rate, the two normal stress differences N(1) and N(2), especially N(1), the extensional viscosity, and the dynamic moduli G` and G ``. In this paper, we shall confine attention to `constant-viscosity` Boger fluids, and, accordingly, we shall limit attention to N(1), eta(E), G` and G ``. We shall concentrate on the ""splashing"" problem (particularly that which arises when a liquid drop falls onto the free surface of the same liquid). Modern numerical techniques are employed to provide the theoretical predictions. We show that high eta(E) can certainly reduce the height of the so-called Worthington jet, thus confirming earlier suggestions, but other rheometrical influences (steady and transient) can also have a role to play and the overall picture may not be as clear as it was once envisaged. We argue that this is due in the main to the fact that splashing is a manifestly unsteady flow. To confirm this proposition, we obtain numerical simulations for the linear Jeffreys model. This work deals with the development of a numerical technique for simulating three-dimensional viscoelastic free surface flows using the PTT (Phan-Thien-Tanner) nonlinear constitutive equation. In particular, we are interested in flows possessing moving free surfaces. The equations describing the numerical technique are solved by the finite difference method on a staggered grid. The fluid is modelled by a Marker-and-Cell type method and an accurate representation of the fluid surface is employed. The full free surface stress conditions are considered. The PTT equation is solved by a high order method, which requires the calculation of the extra-stress tensor on the mesh contours. To validate the numerical technique developed in this work flow predictions for fully developed pipe flow are compared with an analytic solution from the literature. Then, results of complex free surface flows using the FIT equation such as the transient extrudate swell problem and a jet flowing onto a rigid plate are presented. An investigation of the effects of the parameters epsilon and xi on the extrudate swell and jet buckling problems is reported. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents a finite difference technique for simulating three-dimensional free surface flows governed by the Upper-Convected Maxwell (UCM) constitutive equation. A Marker-and-Cell approach is employed to represent the fluid free surface and formulations for calculating the non-Newtonian stress tensor on solid boundaries are developed. The complete free surface stress conditions are employed. The momentum equation is solved by an implicit technique while the UCM constitutive equation is integrated by the explicit Euler method. The resulting equations are solved by the finite difference method on a 3D-staggered grid. By using an exact solution for fully developed flow inside a pipe, validation and convergence results are provided. Numerical results include the simulation of the transient extrudate swell and the comparison between jet buckling of UCM and Newtonian fluids.

A nephelometric technique based on a liquid drop is described for the measurement of atmospheric sulfur dioxide. A 40-mul drop of barium chloride and hydrogen peroxide solution is suspended in a flowing-air sampling stream. The sulfur (IV) collected is oxidized to sulfur (VI) and finally precipitated as barium sulfate. Nephelometric detection of drop is achieved by an appropriate arrangement consisting of an optical fiber contacting the drop and a photodiode placed at 90degrees relative to the fiber. The design and characteristics of this drop-based gas sensor system are described. The analytical response, as photocurrent, is proportional to the product of the sampling period and the sulfur dioxide concentration. The detection limit is ca. 1.1 mg m(-3) for a 10-min sampling time. The present technique is fairly rapid and simple, uses a small amount of reagent and is set up with low-cost equipment, making this system economically viable. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Fatigue crack initiation occurs at the surface, although sub surface nucleation has also been reported. Localized imperfections like inclusions close to surface and surface small pits can result in crack sources. Coatings are not always beneficial by fatigue point of view too. Mechanical properties of the covering material can change considerably the fatigue behavior of base metal due to residual surface stresses, to micro cracks or to hydrogen embrittlement. This paper is concerned with analysis of electrolytic etch on the fatigue resistance of a 35NCD16 high strength steel in a mechanical condition of (1760 - 1960) MPa, and analysis of electroplated hard chromium effects on the fatigue resistance in a strength condition of 989 MPa. Hardness impression was used as a reference parameter in case of electrolytic etch. In both cases, experimental data showed that fatigue strength of 35NCD16 steel was considerably reduced. This work presents numerical simulations of two fluid flow problems involving moving free surfaces: the impacting drop and fluid jet buckling. The viscoelastic model used in these simulations is the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model. To validate the code, numerical predictions of the drop impact problem for Newtonian and Oldroyd-B fluids are presented and compared with other methods. In particular, a benchmark on numerical simulations for a XPP drop impacting on a rigid plate is performed for a wide range of the relevant parameters. Finally, to provide an additional application of free surface flows of XPP fluids, the viscous jet buckling problem is simulated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
