Summit between West Chester University, Pennsylvania, USA and Universidad Nacional, Heredia Costa Rica. Global Library Literacy Initiative: An Intercultural Learning Experience

 This document describes the experience of academic cooperation between professionals in the field of library science, both from West Chester University (WCU), and the National University (UNA) of Costa Rica. The event took place at West Chester University during the week May 4th to May 8th, 2009. The objectives of this revolved around the exchange of ideas and interests in the academic and cultural relations between the two universities. In addition, it unveiled several services and procedures in the handling of information and highlighted the importance of promoting the exchange of students from both institutions. Finally, this article highlights the schedule of activities to integrate international and intercultural perspective in various areas related to the teaching-learning process, the contribution of university libraries on student success and techniques of information dissemination.

A pesca do bacalhau durante o período do Estado Novo (1933-1974) : contributo para as relações interculturais

A presente dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a pesca do bacalhau feita por portugueses sob a bandeira de Portugal durante o período do Estado Novo (1933-1974). Investigou-se as razões para um investimento e um protecionismo tão forte à indústria da pesca do bacalhau. É indissociável do estudo da demanda portuguesa por este peixe, à época muito abundante no noroeste atlântico, as políticas autárcicas e de subsistência pilares da economia do Estado Novo, assim como a implantação e robustecimento da Instituição Corporativa. Subjacente a estas linhas de matriz económica mas paradigmáticas do novo regime, estava também a reconstrução da identidade portuguesa, a sacralização do trabalho e a heroicidade do pescador português do bacalhau. A existência da tentativa de revivificação da glória dos descobrimentos na pesca do bacalhau. A criação de um ambiente social, político e religioso que levaram à persecução destas políticas e consequentemente do engrandecimento da estrutura do Estado Novo, resultando até na sedimentação de apoio popular. O desenvolvimento da frota de pesca longínqua foi quase uma única janela de oportunidades para o conhecimento de novos mundos. A montante e a jusante da atividade piscatória também se desenvolveram indústrias e comércio internacional. A participação em organizações internacionais de regulação das pescas proporcionou contatos Institucionais com outras nações, não raro utilizados para quebrar isolamentos e propagandear o Estado Novo e as suas manifestações culturais e identitárias que suscitaram relacionamentos interculturais. Para além destes contatos mais formais, também se desenvolveram contatos informais, que se repercutiram na criação e manifestação de conhecimento mútuo e claro de condições para a gestação da interculturidade. Estes desenvolvimentos de relações informais, de contatos profissionais também geraram relações culturais que se manifestaram em projetos individuais de vida associados às migrações.

Disrupting (gendered) Islamophobia: the practice of feminist ijtihad to support the agency of young Muslim women

Muslim feminist scholars highlight, and seek to transform, racist, sexist and Islamophobic discourses through feminist interpretations of their religion. This paper reports on data gathered from an interview-based study involving four young Muslim women from the same Brisbane (Queensland) community. The focus is on how these young women are understanding, and finding spaces of agency, within these discourses with reference to their faith. The Islamic principle of ijtihad (jurisprudential interpretation of religious text) and the practice of feminist ijtihad are theorized as powerful tools in supporting the young women to counter the Islamophobia and gendered Islamophobia in their lives. Using these tools, however, as this paper argues, is not unproblematic and can reinscribe disempowering gender and ethno-cultural relations. Amid unprecedented gendered Islamophobia and the clear imperative of supporting Muslim women to access the tools of feminist ijtihad, the paper provides important insight into the possibilities and problematics of these tools.

'Research as dialogue' and cross-cultural consultations : confronting relations of power

ln this paper, we discuss methodological issues that emerged as we worked through a small empirical research project, 'Engaging Aboriginal students in education through community empowerment'. Recent national policy statements (see, for example, MCEETYA 2000,. NBEET 1995) argue the importance of education/research that keeps the locus of control within the Aboriginal community as a means to further the goal of self-determination and improve educational outcomes. In keeping with these recommendations, our project aimed to challenge assimilationist frameworks and sought to 'empower' members of the local Aboriginal community through participation in the project. 'Research as dialogue' was a guiding principal and a primary aim was to listen actively to all key stakeholders in the remote community setting, particularly to lndigenous parents, students and teachers, in order to identify current strengths and concerns regarding the provision of culturally inclusive schooling. A proposed second stage of the project is to develop, on the basis of these consultations and in collaboration, community-based education projects that engage non-attending Aboriginal students. Here we discuss the consultative processes undertaken in stage one of the project, and critically analyse the difficulties as well as potential strengths of trying to form collaborative partnerships as researchers across cultural differences and with diverse community groups.

In this paper, we report on the initial stage of a small empirical research project, Engaging Aboriginal Students In Education Through Community Empowerment.

In this paper, we critically analyse the difficulties as well as potential strengths of trying to form collaborative partnerships as researchers, across cultural differences and with diverse community groups. For example, what does 'acknowledging' very different cultural perspectives actually mean to/in this kind of research process? The ways in which relations of power amongst all parties are played out in/through such an approach is also opened up for scrutiny and further discussion.

Strange Relations. Cultural Translation of Noh Theatre in Ezra Pound’s Dance Poems and W. B. Yeats’s At the Hawk’s Well

Drawing on the reception of Noh drama by Ezra Pound and William Butler Yeats, the article analyses both the literary and cultural ‘translations’ of this form of Japanese theatre in their works, focusing on Yeats’s play At the Hawk’s Well (1917). I conceptualize ‘cultural translation’ as the staging of relations that mark a residual cultural difference. Referred to as ‘foreignizing’ in translation theory, this method enables what Erika Fischer-Lichte has termed a ‘liminal experience’ for the audience –– an effect Yeats intended for the performance of his play. It evokes situations in which opposites collapse and new ways of acting or new combinations of symbols can be tried out. Yeats’s play will be used to sketch how an analysis of relations could serve as a general model for the study of cultural transfer as cultural translation in general.
