A lubrication-flow model for a free film in a corner is presented. The model, written in the hyperbolic coordinate system ξ = x² – y², η = 2xy, applies to films that are thin in the η direction. The lubrication approximation yields two coupled evolution equations for the film thickness and the velocity field which, to lowest order, describes plug flow in the hyperbolic coordinates. A free film in a corner evolving under surface tension and gravity is investigated. The rate of thinning of a free film is compared to that of a film evolving over a solid substrate. Viscous shear and normal stresses are both captured in the model and are computed for the entire flow domain. It is shown that normal stress dominates over shear stress in the far field, while shear stress dominates close to the corner.

A critical analysis of single crystal X-ray diffraction studies on a series of terminally protected tripeptides containing a centrally positioned Aib (alpha-aminoisobutyric acid) residue has been reported. For the tripeptide series containing Boc-Ala-Aib as corner residues, all the reported peptides formed distorted type II beta-turn structures. Moreover, a series of Phe substituted analogues ( tripeptides with Boc-Phe-Aib) have also shown different beta-turn conformations. However, the Leu-modified analogues (tripeptides with Boc-Leu-Aib) disrupt the concept of beta-turn formation and adopt various conformations in the solid state. X-ray crystallography sheds some light on the conformational heterogeneity at atomic resolution. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present two new corner detectors; one works by using dissimilarity along the contour direction to detect curves in the image contour and the other estimates image curvature along the contour direction. These operators are fast, robust to noise, and require no subjective thresholding.

Two corner detectors are presented, one of which works by testing similarity of image patches along the contour direction to detect curves in the image contour, and the other of which uses direct estimation image curvature along the contour direction. The operators are fast, robust to noise, and self-thresholding. An interpretation of the Kitchen-Rosenfeld corner operator is presented which shows that this operator can also be viewed as the second derivative of the image function along the edge direction.

We present a corner detector that works by using dissimilarity along the contour direction to detect curves in the image contour. The operator is fast, robust to noise and almost self-thresholding. The standard deviation of the image noise must be specified, but this value is easily measured and the explicit modeling of image noise contributes to the robustness of the operator to noise. We also present a new interpretation of the Kitchen-Rosenfeld corner operator (1982) in which we show that this operator can also be viewed as the second derivative of the image function along the edge direction.
