We present a review of perceptual image quality metrics and their application to still image compression. The review describes how image quality metrics can be used to guide an image compression scheme and outlines the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of a number of quality metrics. We examine a broad range of metrics ranging from simple mathematical measures to those which incorporate full perceptual models. We highlight some variation in the models for luminance adaptation and the contrast sensitivity function and discuss what appears to be a lack of a general consensus regarding the models which best describe contrast masking and error summation. We identify how the various perceptual components have been incorporated in quality metrics, and identify a number of psychophysical testing techniques that can be used to validate the metrics. We conclude by illustrating some of the issues discussed throughout the paper with a simple demonstration. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A finite element model (FEM) of the cell-compression experiment has been developed in dimensionless form to extract the fundamental cell-wall-material properties (i.e. the constitutive equation and its parameters) from experiment force-displacement data. The FEM simulates the compression of a thin-walled, liquid-filled sphere between two flat surfaces. The cell-wall was taken to be permeable and the FEM therefore accounts for volume loss during compression. Previous models assume an impermeable wall and hence a conserved cell volume during compression. A parametric study was conducted for structural parameters representative of yeast. It was shown that the common approach of assuming reasonable values for unmeasured parameters (e.g. cell-wall thickness, initial radial stretch) can give rise to nonunique solutions for both the form and constants in the cell-wall constitutive relationship. Similarly, measurement errors can also lead to an incorrectly defined cell-wall constitutive relationship. Unique determination of the fundamental wall properties by cell compression requires accurate and precise measurement of a minimum set of parameters (initial cell radius, initial cell-wall thickness, and the volume loss during compression). In the absence of such measurements the derived constitutive relationship may be in considerable error, and should be evaluated against its ability to predict the outcome of other mechanical experiments. The performance of three different techniques for determining proton rotating frame relaxation rates (T1pH) in charred and uncharred woods is compared. The variable contact time (VCT) experiment is shown to over-estimate T1pH, particularly for the charred samples, due to the presence of slowly cross-polarizing C-13 nuclei. The variable spin (VSL) or delayed contact experiment is shown to overcome these problems; however, care is needed in the analysis to ensure rapidly relaxing components are not overlooked. T1pH is shown to be non-uniform for both charred and uncharred wood samples; a rapidly relaxing component (T1pH = 0.46-1.07 ms) and a slowly relaxing component (T1pH = 3.58-7.49) is detected in each sample. T1pH for each component generally decreases with heating temperature (degree of charring) and the proportion of rapidly relaxing component increases. Direct T1pH determination (via H-1 detection) shows that all samples contain an even faster relaxing component (0.09-0.24 ms) that is virtually undetectable by the indirect (VCT and VSL) techniques. A new method for correcting for T1pH signal losses in spin counting experiments is developed to deal with the rapidly relaxing component detected in the VSL experiment. Implementation of this correction increased the proportion of potential C-13 CPMAS NMR signal that can be accounted for by up to 50% for the charred samples. An even greater proportion of potential signal can be accounted for if the very rapidly relaxing component detected in the direct T1pH determination is included; however, it must be kept in mind that this experiment also detects H-1 pools which may not be involved in H-1-C-13 cross-polarization. Purpose The aim of this study was to test the correlation between Fourier-domain (FD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) macular and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness and visual field (VF) loss on standard automated perimetry (SAP) in chiasmal compression. Methods A total of 35 eyes with permanent temporal VF defects and 35 controls underwent SAP and FD-OCT (3D OCT-1000; Topcon Corp.) examinations. Macular thickness measurements were averaged for the central area and for each quadrant and half of that area, whereas RNFL thickness was determined for six sectors around the optic disc. VF loss was estimated in six sectors of the VF and in the central 16 test points in the VF. The correlation between VF loss and OCT measurements was tested with Spearman`s correlation coefficients and with linear regression analysis. Results Macular and RNFL thickness parameters correlated strongly with SAP VF loss. Correlations were generally stronger between VF loss and quadrantic or hemianopic macular thickness than with sectoral RNFL thickness. For the macular parameters, we observed the strongest correlation between macular thickness in the inferonasal quadrant and VF loss in the superior temporal central quadrant (rho=0.78; P<0.001) whereas for the RNFL parameters the strongest correlation was observed between the superonasal optic disc sector and the central temporal VF defect (rho=0.60; P<0.001).

PURPOSE. To evaluate the relationship between pattern electroretinogram (PERG) amplitude, macular and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field (VF) loss on standard automated perimetry (SAP) in eyes with temporal hemianopia from chiasmal compression. METHODS. Forty-one eyes from 41 patients with permanent temporal VF defects from chiasmal compression and 41 healthy subjects underwent transient full-field and hemifield (temporal or nasal) stimulation PERG, SAP and time domain-OCT macular and RNFL thickness measurements. Comparisons were made using Student`s t-test. Deviation from normal VF sensitivity for the central 18 of VF was expressed in 1/Lambert units. Correlations between measurements were verified by linear regression analysis. RESULTS. PERG and OCT measurements were significantly lower in eyes with temporal hemianopia than in normal eyes. A significant correlation was found between VF sensitivity loss and fullfield or nasal, but not temporal, hemifield PERG amplitude. Likewise a significant correlation was found between VF sensitivity loss and most OCT parameters. No significant correlation was observed between OCT and PERG parameters, except for nasal hemifield amplitude. A significant correlation was observed between several macular and RNFL thickness parameters. CONCLUSIONS. In patients with chiasmal compression, PERG amplitude and OCT thickness measurements were significant related to VF loss, but not to each other. OCT and PERG quantify neuronal loss differently, but both technologies are useful in understanding structure-function relationship in patients with chiasmal compression. Orthodontic tooth movement is achieved by the remodeling of alveolar bone in response to mechanical loading, and is supposed to be mediated by several host mediators, such as chemokines. In this study we investigated the pattern of mRNAs expression encoding for osteoblast and osteoclast related chemokines, and further correlated them with the profile of bone remodeling markers in palatal and buccal sides of tooth under orthodontic force, where tensile (T) and compressive (C) forces, respectively, predominate. Real-time PCR was performed with periodontal ligament mRNA from samples of T and C sides of human teeth submitted to rapid maxillary expansion, while periodontal ligament of normal teeth were used as controls. Results showed that both T and C sides exhibited significant higher expression of all targets when compared to controls. Comparing C and T sides, C side exhibited higher expression of MCP-1/CCL2, MIP-1 alpha/CCL3 and RANKL, while T side presented higher expression of OCN. The expression of RANTES/CCL5 and SDF-1/CXCL12 was similar in C and T sides. Our data demonstrate a differential expression of chemokines in compressed and stretched PDL during orthodontic tooth movement, suggesting that chemokines pattern may contribute to the differential bone remodeling in response to orthodontic force through the establishment of distinct microenvironments in compression and tension sides. Objective. Endothelial impairment evaluation by sonographic measurement of flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) has become broadly used. However, this method has 2 main caveats: the dilatation depends on the baseline arterial diameter, and a high precision level is required. Vasodilatation leads to an amplified fall in impedance. We hypothesized that assessment of the pulsatility index change (PI-C) 1 minute after 5-minute forearm compression might evaluate that fall in impedance. The aim of this study was to compare the PI-C with FMD. Methods. Flow-mediated dilatation and the PI-C were assessed in 51 healthy women aged between 35.1 and 67.1 years. We correlated both FMD and the PI-C with age, body mass index, waist circumference, cholesterol level, high-density lipoprotein level, glucose level, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, brachial artery diameter, simplified Framingham score, intima-media thickness, and carotid stiffness index. Intraclass correlation coefficients between 2 FMD and PI-C measurements were also examined. Results. Only FMD correlated with baseline brachial diameter (r=-0.53). The PI-C had a high correlation with age, body mass index, waist circumference, cholesterol level, systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, simplified Framingham score, and intima-media thickness. The correlation between FMD and the PI-C was high (r=-0.66). The PI-C had a higher intraclass correlation coefficient (0.991) than FMD (0.836) but not brachial artery diameter (0.989). Conclusions. The PI-C had a large correlation with various markers of cardiovascular risk. Additionally, PI-C measurement does not require offline analysis, extra software, or electrocardiography We think that the PI-C could be considered a marker of endothelial function. However, more studies are required before further conclusions.

Purpose: To quantitatively evaluate changes induced by the application of a femoral blood-pressure cuff (BPC) on run-off magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). which is a method generally previously proposed to reduce venous contamination in the leg. Materials and Methods: This study was Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)- and Institutional Review Board (IRB)-compliant, We used time-resolved gradient-echo gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced MRA to measure BPC effects on arterial, venous, and soft-tissue enhancement. Seven healthy volunteers (six men) were studied with the BPC applied at the mid-femoral level unilaterally using a 1.5T MR system after intravenous injection of Gd-BOPTA. Different statistical tools were used such as the Wilcoxon signed rank test and a cubic smoothing spline fit. Results: We found that BPC application induces delayed venous filling (as previously described), but also induces significant decreases in arterial inflow, arterial enhancement, vascular-soft tissue contrast, and delayed peak enhancement (which have not been previously measured). Conclusion: The potential benefits from using a BPC for run-off MRA must be balanced against the potential pitfalls, elucidated by our findings.

Objectives To compare the biomechanical characteristics of 2 arthrodesis techniques for the equine proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) using either a 3-hole 4.5 mm locking compression plate (LCP) or 3-hole 4.5 mm narrow dynamic compression plate (DCP), both with 2 transarticular 5.5 mm cortex screws. Study Design Experimental. Sample Population Cadaveric adult equine forelimbs (*n=6 pairs). Methods For each forelimb pair, 1 limb was randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups and the contralateral limb by default to the other treatment group. Construct stiffness, gap formation across the PIP joint, and rotation about the PIP joint were determined for each construct before cyclic axial loading and after each of four, 5000 cycle loading regimens. After the 20,000 cycle axial loading regimen, each construct was loaded to failure. Results There were no significant differences in construct stiffness, gap formation, or sagittal plane rotation between the LCP and DCP treatment groups at any of the measured time points. Conclusion Biomechanically, fixation of the equine PIP joint with a 3-hole 4.5 mm LCP is equivalent to fixation with a 3-hole 4.5 mm narrow DCP under the test conditions used.

This article describes the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with a typical left hemifacial spasm of 8-month duration. After 2 months, she experienced lacinating and sharp shock-like pain in the left side of her face affecting the V1 and V2 territories and a discrete attenuation of nauseous reflex on the left side. CT angiography and MRI revealed significant compression of left cranial nerves V, VII, VIII, IX and X by a giant and tortuous vertebro-basilar arterial complex. This case illustrates the nonlinearity of the relationship between the presence of the stressor factor and the actual manifestation of the disease.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of JPEG quality factors 100, 80 and 60 on the reproducibility of identification of cephalometric points on images of lateral cephalograms, compared with the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format. Methods: The sample was composed of 30 images of digital lateral cephalograms obtained from 30 individuals (15 males and 15 females) on a phosphor plate system in DICOM format. The images were converted to JPEG with quality factors 100, 80 and 60 with the aid of software, adding up to 90 images. The 120 images (DICOM, JPEG 100, 80 and 60) were blinded and 12 cephalometric points were identified on each image by three calibrated orthodontists, using the x-y coordinate system, on a cephalometric software. Results: The results revealed that identification of cephalometric points was highly reproducible, except for the point Orbitale (Or) on the x-axis. The different file formats did not present a statistically significant difference. Conclusions: JPEG images of lateral cephalograms with quality factors 100, 80 and 60 did not present alterations in the reproducibility of identification of cephalometric points compared with the DICOM format. A technique is described to preserve the pigment found in the bodies and the intestine of some brightly coloured and darkly pigmented benedeniine capsalid monogeneans. Previous studies of these pigmented capsalids have proven difficult because the pigmentation usually disappears when the worms are fixed using preservatives containing concentrations of formalin over 5% and/or ethanol, acetic acid, chromic acid, picric acid and mercuric chloride. The technique developed here uses a fixative comprising glycerol, acetone and formalin (GAF). After fixation under light coverslip compression for three minutes, specimens are transferred to absolute acetone for three minutes and cleared in a mixture of nine parts cedar wood oil and one part absolute acetone before mounting in Canada balsam. Processing must be carried out quickly, as these chemicals will cause the pigments to fade if the specimens are exposed to them for too long. Pigmented benedeniines processed using this technique retain the distribution, intensity and colour observed in live worms. The colour and distribution of pigmentation in monogeneans may be of taxonomic importance and this technique aids preparation of whole-mounts suitable for registration as type-material.
