A study of samples dredged within areas of tectonic arc-trench systems (Kermadec and New Hebrides) allows to distinguish three types of ferromanganese mineralization. Relationship between mineral and geochemical specialization is established. A conclusion is made that ferromanganese mineralization is a permanent genetic series of matter supply: from endogenic (hydrothermal solution is a dominant source at deposition of chemical elements from mixture seawater plus hydrothermal solutions) to hydrogenic (seawater is a dominant source at element deposition). This results in geochemical and mineralogical variety of ferromanganese mineralization within this part of the Pacific Ocean.

Hydrothermal deposits of a wide variety of types are being found with increasing frequency on or near actively spreading mid-ocean ridges. However, they also have a potential to occur in other submarine volcanic settings, including island arcs. To follow up indications of mineralization associated with submarine hydrothermal activity in the south-west Pacific island arc, a joint New Zealand Oceanographic Institute/Imperial College research cruise was mounted in May 1981 aboard the RV Tangaroa. During this cruise, over 130 sampling stations were occupied, at one of which were dredged manganese deposits with strong hydrothermal affinities. This is the first report of such deposits from an island arc setting.

The western flank of the Great Bahama Bank, drilled during ODP Leg 166 at seven sites, represents a prograding carbonate sequence from late Oligocene to Holocene [Eberli et al., Proc. ODP Init. Reports 166 (1997)]. The signatures of the detrital input and of diagenetic alteration are evident in clay enriched intervals from the most distal Sites 1006 and 1007 in the Straits of Florida. Mineralogical and chemical investigations (XRD, TEM, SEM, ICP-MS) run on bulk rocks and on the clay fractions enable the origin and evolution of silicate parageneses to be characterized. Plio-Pleistocene silt and clay interbeds contain detrital clay assemblages comprising chlorite, illite, interstratified illite smectite, smectite, kaolinite and palygorskite. The greater smectite input within late Pliocene units than in Pleistocene oozes may relate either varying source areas or change in paleoclimatic conditions and weathering intensity. The clay intervals from Miocene-upper Oligocene wackestone sections are fairly different, with prevalent smectite in the fine fraction, whose high crystallinity and Mg contents that point towards an authigenic origin. The lower Miocene section, below 1104 mbsf, at depths where compaction features are well developed, is particularly characterized by abundant authigenic Na-K-clinoptilolite filling foraminifer tests. The authigenic smectite and clinoptilolite paragenesis is recorded by the chemical trends, both of the sediment and the interstitial fluid. This diagenetic evolution implies Si- and Mg rich fluids circulating in deeper and older sequences. For lack of any local volcaniclastic input, the genesis of zeolite and the terms of water rock interaction are discussed. The location of the diagenetic front correlates with that of the seismic sequence boundary P2 dated as 23.2 Ma. This correspondence may allow the chronostratigraphic significance of some specific seismic reflections to be reassessed.

Ferromanganese crusts, nodules, and ferromanganese-rich sediments were recovered on the Wombat Plateau, northwest Australian continental margin, by dredging during Bureau of Mineral Resources cruise 56 of Rig Seismic and by drilling during ODP Leg 122 of JOWES Resolution. We report here the chemistry and mineralogy of the ferromanganese crusts, nodules, and associated ferromanganese-rich sediments. The ferromanganese deposits from the ODP sites are up to 40 cm thick and probably formed in Late Cretaceous to Eocene times. Those from outcrops usually formed in several phases, and their age is unconstrained except that the substrates are Mesozoic. The samples were recovered from present-day water depths of 2000-4600 m, on the Wombat Plateau adjacent to the Argo Abyssal Plain. Both the nodules and crusts are primarily vernadite (delta-MnO2) and are chemically and mineralogically similar, and not dissimilar from ferromanganese deposits found elsewhere on Australian and other marginal plateaus. They are markedly different from most deep-sea deposits. The only crystalline iron phase identified within the ferromanganese deposits is goethite. Concentrations of metals of potential economic interest are generally low compared to those from vernadite-rich seamount crusts and nodules and from abyssal nodules from areas of high resource potential in the Pacific Ocean. Maximum metal values reach 0.55% Co, 0.58% Ni, and 0.20% Cu in deposits containing 4.8% to 30.9% Fe and 4.4% to 21.1% Mn.

Hydrothermal Mn-oxide crusts have been removed from the Tonga-Kermadec Ridge, the first such hydrothermal deposits to be reported in the S.W. Pacific island arc. In several respects the deposits are similar to hydrothermal Mn-crusts from oceanic spreading centre settings. They are limited in areal extent, comprise well-crystalline birnessite and generally display extreme fractionation of Mn from Fe. They are strongly depleted in many elements compared to hydrogenous Mn deposits but are comparatively enriched in Li, Zn, Mo and Cd. The Group IA and Group IIA metals show strong intercorrelations and the behaviour of Mg in the purest samples may indicate the extent to which normal seawater has influenced the composition of the deposits. Certain aspects of the deposits are not typical of hydrothermal Mn deposits. In particular at least some of the crusts have developed on a sediment or unconsolidated talus substrate. Some crusts, or specific layers within some crusts, display a chemical composition which suggests a significant input from normal seawater.

Saucer-shaped iron-manganese crusts occur adjacent to gravel shoal areas in Oneida lake in central New York. The crusts usually have a crude concentric banding owing to an alternation of orange, iron-rich layers and black, iron-poor layers. Materials from both types of layers are x-ray amorphous. The Oneida lake crusts, like most other freshwater manganese nodules, contain about the same Mn concentration as marine manganese nodules, but are usually higher in Fe and lower in trace metals than their marine equivalents. Although Fe and Mn may be precipitating directly from the lake water, it is more likely that the oxidate crusts are the result of precipitation of Fe and Mn when reduced sediment pore water comes in contact with well oxygenated bottom waters. Organisms, particularly bacteria, may play a role in the formation of the crusts, but to date no evidence of this has been found.
