Elliptical conformal transformation was used to derive closed form expressions for the equivalent circuit series inductance and shunt capacitance per period of a serpentine folded-waveguide slow-wave structure including the effects of the beam-hole. The lumped parameters were subsequently interpreted for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics of the structure. The analysis was benchmarked for two typical millimeter-wave structures operating in Ka- and W-bands, against measurement, 3D electromagnetic modeling using CST Microwave Studio, parametric analysis and equivalent circuit analysis. A simple one dimensional inertial model is presented for transient response analysis of notched beams under impact, and extracting dynamic initiation toughness values. The model includes the effects of striker mass interactions, and contact deformations of the beam. Displacement time history of the striker mass is applied to the model as forcing function. The model is validated by comparison with the experimental investigation on ductile aluminium 6061 alloy and brittle polymer, PMMA.

Optimum design of dynamic fracture test rigs demands a thorough appreciation of beam vibration under impact. Analyses invariably presume rigid anvils, and neglect overhang effects. The beam response predicted analytically and numerically in this paper highlights the significant role of anvil rigidity and beam overhangs on the impact dynamics of three point bend (3PB) specimens.

The basic photonic switching elements of practical importance are outlined. A detailed comparative study of photonic switching architectures is presented both for guided wave fabrics and free-space fabrics. The required equations for comparative study are obtained, after considering the parameters like bend losses, effects of waveguide crossings, etc. The potential areas of application of photonic switching are pointed out.

The non-resonant perturbation formula for the measurement of interaction impedance of a folded-waveguide slow-wave structure was derived for the relevant electromagnetic field configuration at the axis of the beam-hole of the structure. Efficacy of the theory was benchmarked through virtual measurement using 3D electromagnetic modeling in CST-studio.

The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide containing a thick iris is considered for its complete solution by reducing it to two suitable integral equations, one of which is of the first kind and the other is of the second kind. These integral equations are solved approximately, by using truncated Fourier series for the unknown functions. The reflection coefficient is computed numerically from the two integral equation approaches, and almost the same numerical results are obtained. This is also depicted graphically against the wave number and compared with thin iris results, which are computed by using complementary formulations coupled with Galerkin approximations. While the reflection coefficient for a thin iris steadily increases with the wave number, for a thick iris it fluctuates and zero reflection occurs. The number of zeros of the reflection coefficient for a thick iris increases with the thickness. Thus a thick iris becomes completely transparent for some discrete wave numbers. This phenomenon may be significant in the modelling of rectangular waveguides.

Analysis of the serpentine folded-waveguide slow-wave structure was carried out using elliptical conformal transformation, for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics of the structure. The results obtained from the present analysis were compared with those from 3D electromagnetic simulation using MAFIA.

A novel method is proposed for fracture toughness determination of graded microstructurally complex (Pt,Ni)Al bond coats using edge-notched doubly clamped beams subjected to bending. Micron-scale beams are machined using the focused ion beam and loaded in bending under a nanoindenter. Failure loads gathered from the pop-ins in the load-displacement curves combined with XFEM analysis are used to calculate K-c at individual zones, free from substrate effects. The testing technique and sources of errors in measurement are described and possible micromechanisms of fracture in such heterogeneous coatings discussed.

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of an ultrafast laser written Er-doped chalcogenide glass buried waveguide amplifier; Er-doped GeGaS glass has been synthesized by the vacuum sealed melt quenching technique. Waveguides have been fabricated inside the 4 mm long sample by direct ultrafast laser writing. The total passive fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 2.58 +/- 0.02 dB at 1600 nm, including a propagation loss of 1.6 +/- 0.3 dB. Active characterization shows a relative gain of 2.524 +/- 0.002 dB/cm and 1.359 +/- 0.005 dB/cm at 1541 nm and 1550 nm respectively, for a pump power of 500 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm. This paper presents a new approach for Optical Beam steering using 1-D linear arrays of curved wave guides as delay line. The basic structure for generating delay is the curved/bent waveguide and hence its Analytical modelling involves evaluation of mode profiles, propagation constants and losses become important. This was done by solving the dispersion equation of a bent waveguide with specific refractive index profiles. The phase shifts due to S-bends are obtained and results are compared with theoretical values. Simulations in 2-D are done using BPM and Matlab.

We report the simulation and analytical results obtained for homogenous or bulk sensing of protein on Siliconon- insulator strip waveguide based microring resonator. The radii of the rings considered are 5 μm and 20 μm; the waveguide dimensions are 300 × 300 nm. A gap of (i) 200 nm and (ii) 300 nm exists between the ring and the bus waveguide. The biomaterial is uniformly distributed over a thickness which exceeds the evanescent field penetration depth of 150 nm. The sensitivities of the resonators are 32.5 nm/RIU and 17.5 nm/RIU (RIU - Refractive index unit) respectively.

An E-plane rectangular folded-waveguide slow-wave structure with metal grating on the broad wall of the waveguide along the direction of the electric field has been proposed and analyzed for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics through three dimensional electromagnetic modeling in CST Studio. The effects of the presence of grating on the bandwidth and interaction impedance are demonstrated.
