The magnetic semiconductor GdxSi1-x was prepared by low-energy dual ion-beam epitaxy. GdxSi1-x shows excellent magnetic properties at room temperature. A high magnetic moment of 10 mu(B) per Gd atom is observed. The high atomic magnetic moment is interpreted as being a result of the RKKY mechanism. The indirect exchange interaction between ions is strong at large distances due to the low state density of the carriers in the magnetic semiconductor.

The magnetic/nonmagnetic p-n junction was prepared by implanting gadolinium into the n-type silicon with low-energy dual-ion-beam epitaxy technology. The magnetic layer GdxSi1-x shows excellent magnetic properties at room temperature. High magnetic moment 10mu(B) per Gd atom is observed, which is interpreted by RKKY mechanism. Magnetic/nonmagnetic p-n junctions show rectifying behaviour, but no magnetoresistance is observed.
Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopic and magnetic studies of R3Fe29-xVx (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy)
Resumo:
Mossbauer spectra for Fe atoms in the series of R3Fe29-xVx (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy) compounds were collected at 4.2 K. The ratio of 14.5 T/mu(B) between the average hyperfine field B-hf and the average Fe magnetic moment mu(Fe)(MS), obtained from our data, in Y3Fe29-xVx is in agreement with that deduced from the RxTy alloys by Gubbens et al. The average Fe magnetic moments mu(Fe)(MS) in these compounds at 4.2 K, deduced from our Mossbauer spectroscopic studies, are in accord with the results of magnetization measurement. The average hyperfine field of the Fe sites for R3Fe29-xVx at 4.2 K increases with increasing values of the rare earth effective spin (g(J) - 1) J, which indicates that there exists a transferred spin polarization induced by the neighboring rare earth atom.

A systematic study of the structural and intrinsic magnetic properties of the hydrides R3Fe29-xCrxHy (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy) has been performed. Hydrogenation lends to a relative volume expansion of the unit cell and a decrease in x-ray density for each compound. Anisotropic expansions mainly along the n- and b-axes rather than along the c-axis for all of the compounds upon hydrogenation are observed. The lattice constants and the unit-cell volume of R3Fe29-xCrx and R3Fe29-xCrxHy decrease with increasing R atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Hydrogenation results in an increase in the Curie temperature and a corresponding increase in the saturation magnetization at room temperature for each compound. After hydrogenation a decrease of 0.34 mu(B)/Fe in the average Fe atomic magnetic moment and a slight increase in the anisotropy field for Y3Fe27.2Cr1.8 are achieved at 4.2 K. First-order magnetization processes (FOMP) occur in magnetic fields of around 1.5 T and 4.0 T at 4.2 K for Nd3Fe24.5Cr4.5H5.0 and TD3Fe27.0Cr2.0H2.8, and around 1.4 T at room temperature for Gd3Fe28.0Cr1.0H4.2. The abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe25.0Cr4.0 and Ce3Fe25.0Cr4.0H5.4 suggest that the Ce ion non-triply ionized.

Fe-N films containing the Fe16N2 phase were prepared in a high-vacuum system of ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). The composition and structure of the films were analysed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Magnetic properties of the films were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The phase composition of Fe-N films depend sensitively on the N/Fe atomic arrival ratio and the deposition temperature. An Fe16N2 film was deposited successfully on a GaAs (1 0 0) substrate by IBAD at a N/Fe atomic arrival ratio of 0.12. The gram-saturation magnetic moment of the Fe16N2 film obtained is 237 emu/g at room temperature, the possible cause has been analysed and discussed. Hysteresis loops of Fe16N2 have been measured, the coercive force H-c is about 120 Oe, which is much larger than the value for Fe, this means the Fe16N2 sample exhibits a large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The elastic, magnetic and electronic properties of MFe3N (M = Fe, Ru, Os) are investigated via first-principles calculations. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental and other theoretical data. The high ratios of bulk modulus to shear modulus 2.7, 2.0, and 1.8 for gamma'-Fe4N, RuFe3N, and OsFe3N, respectively, indicate that they have good ductility. gamma'-Fe4N possesses the largest B/C-44 (3.41) ratio, which suggests that it is much prone to shearing. The net magnetic moment per formula unit decreases from 9.90 for gamma'-Fe4N, 7.66 for RuFe3N, to 6.80 mu(B) for OsFe3N.

We describe a self-consistent magnetic tight-binding theory based in an expansion of the Hohenberg-Kohn density functional to second order, about a non-spin-polarized reference density. We show how a first order expansion about a density having a trial input magnetic moment leads to a fixed moment model. We employ a simple set of tight-binding parameters that accurately describes electronic structure and energetics, and show these to be transferable between first row transition metals and their alloys. We make a number of calculations of the electronic structure of dilute Cr impurities in Fe, which we compare with results using the local spin density approximation. The fixed moment model provides a powerful means for interpreting complex magnetic configurations in alloys; using this approach, we are able to advance a simple and readily understood explanation for the observed anomaly in the enthalpy of mixing.

The system TlCo2Se2-xSx has been thoroughly investigated by neutron powder diffraction and SQUID magnetometry. TlCo2Se2-xSx is a layered tetragonal structure containing atomic cobalt layers separated by a distance of 6.4 angstrom in the sulphide and 6.8 angstrom in the selenide. The solid solubility of isovalent selenium and sulphur atoms in the structure makes it possible to continuously vary the interlayer distance and thereby tune the magnetic coupling between the Co-layers. At low temperatures, the Co-atoms are ferromagnetically ordered within the layers and magnetic moments lie in the ab-plane. However, these Co-moments form a helical magnetic structure that prevails for 0 <= x <= 1.5 with a gradual decrease of the angle between adjacent Co-layers from 122 degrees to 39 degrees. For x >= 1.75, a collinear ferromagnetic structure is stable. The relationship between the coupling angle and the Co-interlayer separation shows an almost linear behaviour. The helical phase contains no net spontaneous magnetic moment up to TlCo2SeS, where a small net magnetic moment appears that increases until the ferromagnetic structure is found for 1.75 <= x <= 2.0. A new compound, IrMnSi, has been synthesized, and its crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated by means of neutron powder diffraction, magnetization measurements, and first-principles theory. The crystal structure is found to be of the TiNiSi type (ordered Co2P, space group Pnma). The Mn-projected electronic states are situated at the Fermi level, giving rise to metallic binding, whereas a certain degree of covalent character is observed for the chemical bond between the It and Si atoms. A cycloidal, i.e., noncollinear, magnetic structure was observed below 460 K, with the propagation vector q=[0,0,0.4530(5)] at 10 K. The magnetism is dominated by large moments on the Mn sites, 3.8 mu(B)/atom from neutron diffraction. First-principles theory reproduces the propagation vector of the experimental magnetic structure as well as the angles between the Mn moments. The calculations further result in a magnetic moment of 3.21 mu(B) for the Mn atoms, whereas the Ir and Si moments are negligible, in agreement with observations. A calculation that more directly incorporates electron-electron interactions improves the agreement between the theoretical and experimental magnetic moments. A band mechanism is suggested to explain the observed magnetic order.

An extensive investigation of the ferromagnetic compound TlCo2S2 has resulted in new information on the electronic and magnetic structure. Electronic structure calculations showed that magnetic ordering is energetically favorable with a clear driving force for ferromagnetic coupling within the cobalt layers. TlCo2S2 is metallic and the conductivity is due to holes in the valence band. XPS single crystal measurements did not show evidence of mixed oxidation states of cobalt. Neutron powder diffraction resulted in a ferromagnetic structure with the magnetic moment in the ab-plane. The derived magnetic moment of the cobalt atom is 0.65(2) mu(B) at 10 K and is in very good agreement with the value, mu(sat) = 0.65(1) mu(B) at 10 K, inferred from the magnetic hysteresis curve. A new ternary Ir-Mn-Si phase with stoichiometry Mn3IrSi has been synthesized and found to crystallize in the cubic AlAu4-type structure, space group P213 with Z=4, which is an ordered form of the beta-Mn structure. The unit cell dimension was determined by x-ray powder diffraction to a=6.4973(3) Angstrom. In addition to the crystal structure, we have determined the magnetic structure and properties using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data. A complex noncollinear magnetic structure is found, with magnetic moments of 2.97(4)u(B) at 10 K only on the Mn atoms. The crystal structure consists of a triangular network built up by Mn atoms, on which the moments are rotated 120degrees around the triangle axes. The magnetic unit cell is the same as the crystallographic and carries no net magnetic moment. The Neel temperature was determined to be 210 K. A first-principles study, based on density functional theory in a general noncollinear formulation, reproduces the experimental results with good agreement. The observed magnetic structure is argued to be the result of frustration of antiferromagnetic couplings by the triangular geometry.

Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 nanoparticles (x=0-1) were synthesized by wet chemical co-precipitation techniques. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were effectively utilized to investigate the different structural parameters. The elemental analysis was conducted using energy-dispersive spectrum and inductively coupled plasma analysis. The magnetic properties such as magnetization and coercivity were measured using vibrating sample magnetometer. The observed magnetization values of the nanoparticles were found to be lower compared to the bulk counterpart. The magnetization showed a gradual decrease with zinc substitution except for a small increase from x=0.2 to 0.3. The Curie temperature was found to be enhanced in the case of ferrites in the nanoregime. The variation in lattice constant, reduced magnetization values, variation of magnetization with zinc substitution, the presence of a net magnetic moment for the zinc ferrite and the enhancement in Curie temperature in Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 all provide evidence to the existence of a metastable cation distribution together with possible surface effects at the nanoregime.

The magnetocaloric effect that originates from the martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Ga shape-memory alloy is studied. We show that this effect is controlled by the magnetostructural coupling at both the martensitic variant and magnetic domain length scales. A large entropy change induced by moderate magnetic fields is obtained for alloys in which the magnetic moment of the two structural phases is not very different. We also show that this entropy change is not associated with the entropy difference between the martensitic and the parent phase arising from the change in the crystallographic structure which has been found to be independent of the magnetic field within this range of fields.
