Radar images and numerical simulations of three shallow convective precipitation events over the Coastal Range in western Oregon are presented. In one of these events, unusually well-defined quasi-stationary banded formations produced large precipitation enhancements in favored locations, while varying degrees of band organization and lighter precipitation accumulations occurred in the other two cases. The difference between the more banded and cellular cases appeared to depend on the vertical shear within the orographic cap cloud and the susceptibility of the flow to convection upstream of the mountain. Numerical simulations showed that the rainbands, which appeared to be shear-parallel convective roll circulations that formed within the unstable orographic cap cloud, developed even over smooth mountains. However, these banded structures were better organized, more stationary, and produced greater precipitation enhancement over mountains with small-scale topographic obstacles. Low-amplitude random topographic roughness elements were found to be just as effective as more prominent subrange-scale peaks at organizing and fixing the location of the orographic rainbands.

A new species of cubozoan jellyfish has been discovered in shallow waters of Bonaire, Netherlands ( Dutch Caribbean). Thus far, approximately 50 sightings of the species, known commonly as the Bonaire banded box jelly, are recorded, and three specimens have been collected. Three physical encounters between humans and the species have been reported. Available evidence suggests that a serious sting is inflicted by this medusa. To increase awareness of the scientific disciplines of systematics and taxonomy, the public has been involved in naming this new species. The Bonaire banded box jelly, Tamoya ohboya, n. sp., can be distinguished from its close relatives T. haplonema from Brazil and T. sp. from the southeastern United States by differences in tentacle coloration, cnidome, and mitochondrial gene sequences. Tamoya ohboya n. sp. possesses striking dark brown to reddish-orange banded tentacles, nematocyst warts that densely cover the animal, and a deep stomach. We provide a detailed comparison of nematocyst data from Tamoya ohboya n. sp., T. haplonema from Brazil, and T. sp. from the Gulf of Mexico.

The metamorphosed banded iron formation from the Nogoli Metamorphic Complex of western Sierra de San Luis, Eastern Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina (Nogoli area, 32 degrees 55`S-66 degrees 15`W) is classified as an oxide facies iron formation of Algoma Type, with a tectonic setting possibly associated with an island arc or back arc, on the basis of field mapping, mineral and textural arrangements and whole rock geochemical features. The origin of banded iron formation is mainly related to chemical precipitation of hydrogenous sediments from seawater in oceanic environments. The primary chemical precipitate is a result of solutions that represent mixtures of seawater and hydrothermal fluids, with significant dilution by maficultramafic volcanic and siliciclastic materials. Multi-stage T(DM) model ages of 1670, 1854 and 1939 Ma and positive, mantle-like xi Nd((1502)) values of +3.8, +1.5 and +0.5 from the banded iron formation are around the range of those mafic to ultramafic meta-volcanic rocks of Nogoli Metamorphic Complex, which are between 1679 and 1765 Ma and +2.64 and +3.68, respectively. This Sm and Nd isotopic connection suggests a close genetic relationship between ferruginous and mafic-ultramafic meta-volcanic rocks, as part of the same island arc or back arc setting. A previous Sm-Nd whole rock isochron of similar to 1.5 Ga performed on mafic-ultramafic meta-volcanic rocks led to the interpretation that chemical sedimentation as old as Mesoproterozoic is possible for the banded iron formation. A clockwise P-T path can be inferred for the regional metamorphic evolution of the banded iron formation, with three distinctive trajectories: (1) Relict prograde M(1)-M(3) segment with gradual P and T increase from greenschist facies at M(1) to amphibolite facies at M(3). (2) Peak P-T conditions at high amphibolite-low granulite facies during M(4). (3) Retrograde counterpart of M(4), that returns from amphibolite facies and stabilizes at greenschist facies during M(5). Each trajectory may be regarded as produced by different tectonic events related to the Pampean? (1) and the Famatinian (2 and 3) orogenies, during the Early to Middle Paleozoic. The Nogoli Metamorphic Complex is interpreted as part of a greenstone belt within the large Meso- to Neoproterozoic Pampean Terrane of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina. OBJECTIVE: This prospective clinical study was conducted with the purpose of evaluating the influence of the banded Herbst appliance on dental changes during the early treatment of Class II malocclusion. METHOD: The sample consisted of 15 prepubertal subjects (12 boys and 3 girls, initial age: 9 years and 6 months) who were treated with the Herbst appliance. Treatment effects were compared with those of a Class II Division 1 group of 15 subjects (8 boys and 7 girls, mean initial age 9 years and 1 month), not treated orthodontically. Statistical analysis was performed using Student t-test with 5% significance level. RESULTS: The results showed that treatment with the banded Herbst appliance in the mixed dentition stage tended to upright maxillary incisors (mean: 4.14°). The maxillary molars were distalized and intruded significantly (mean 2.65 mm and 1.24 mm, respectively), the lower incisors slightly protruded anteriorly (mean 1.64 mm) and the molars showed no significant changes in the horizontal and vertical directions. Furthermore, significant improvements were noted in overbite (1.26 mm), overjet (4.8 mm) and molar relationship (12.08 mm). CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the upper dental arch were found to be greater than changes in the lower arch. Furthermore, mandibular anchorage loss was reduced due to the anchorage system used in the study.

We studied three different isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis obtained from the mesenteric lymph node (D3LY1), the spleen (D3S1) and the liver (D3LIV1) of the same armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus ).Pulmonal inflammatory area was evaluated by intravenous inoculation of 10(6) yeast cells of each isolates in young, male, ddY mice. Moreover, the partial sequence of GP43kDa gene of P. brasiliensis was analyzed. The lung inflammatory area was greater in animals inoculated with isolate D3S1. The partial sequence of GP43kDa gene indicated that isolate D3S1 is different from isolates D3LY1 and D3LIV1. This study suggested that the same armadillo might be susceptible to multiple P. brasiliensis isolates simultaneously.

The three-dimensional structure of the lamina propria of the hard and soft palatine mucosa of the nine-banded armadillo was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Sodium hydroxide cell maceration method was applied to demonstrate the architecture of the connective tissue papillae. The palatine mucosa of the armadillo had a triangular shape and measured appr. 6.5 cm length. The hard palate showed 9 transverse palatine plicae while the soft palate was smooth. In the 10% NaOH treated specimens, the lamina propria of the hard palatine mucosa showed numerous connective tissue papillae with a general finger-like shape. These structures were composed by a meshwork of collagen fibers arranged in several directions. on the other hand, the connective tissue papillae of the soft palate mucosa were scattered and small. Numerous openings of glandular ducts with circular or elliptical shape were located in the interplicae area and in the soft palate.

Twelve isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis generated cerebriform colonies at room temperature on potato glucose agar slants (PDA). These isolates contained abundant chlamydospores and yeast-like cells and are a subset of the 65 isolates obtained from nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus). They grew as a yeast form with typical multiple buddings at 37 degreesC on brain heart infusion agar supplemented with 1% glucose. After replating on PDA and culturing at room temperature for 2 months, the mutants appeared as cottonous colonies, which indicated that the morphological characteristics were unstable.

This work aimed to evaluate the gastrointestinal helminthfauna composition of six-banded armadillos from the Brazilian semi-arid region. Gastrointestinal contents of six road-killed adult animals from Patos County, Paraiba State, were analyzed. Six species of nematodes, comprising five genera and four families, were recovered from the analyzed animals. New morphological data on Trichohelix tuberculata is given, along with a new taxonomical proposal for Hadrostrongylus ransomi (Travassos, 1935) n. comb. This is the first record for parasitic helminths in this host from the Brazilian semi-arid.

The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) of Mangalarga horses were characterized by analysis of NOR-banded metaphase chromosomes according to the technique of Goodpasture and Bloom (Chromosoma 53: 37-50, 1975). NOR banding was detected by silver staining in the telomeric region of the short arm of pair no. 1, in the region adjacent to the centromere of the long arm of pair no. 25 and in the proximal region of the long arm of pair no. 31. Associations of NOR-bearing chromosomal regions occurred in 12% of all metaphases and were frequent between the chromosomes of pair no. 1. Most (52.15%) of the NOR bands appeared on four chromosomes in both males and females. The maximum number of NOR-banded chromosomes was six, though only 11.34% of the cells examined showed this characteristic.

A implementação convencional do método de migração por diferenças finitas 3D, usa a técnica de splitting inline e crossline para melhorar a eficiência computacional deste algoritmo. Esta abordagem torna o algoritmo eficiente computacionalmente, porém cria anisotropia numérica. Esta anisotropia numérica por sua vez, pode levar a falsos posicionamentos de refletores inclinados, especialmente refletores com grandes ângulos de mergulho. Neste trabalho, como objetivo de evitar o surgimento da anisotropia numérica, implementamos o operador de extrapolação do campo de onda para baixo sem usar a técnica splitting inline e crossline no domínio frequência-espaço via método de diferenças finitas implícito, usando a aproximação de Padé complexa. Comparamos a performance do algoritmo iterativo Bi-gradiente conjugado estabilizado (Bi-CGSTAB) com o multifrontal massively parallel solver (MUMPS) para resolver o sistema linear oriundo do método de migração por diferenças finitas. Verifica-se que usando a expansão de Padé complexa ao invés da expansão de Padé real, o algoritmo iterativo Bi-CGSTAB fica mais eficientes computacionalmente, ou seja, a expansão de Padé complexa atua como um precondicionador para este algoritmo iterativo. Como consequência, o algoritmo iterativo Bi-CGSTAB é bem mais eficiente computacionalmente que o MUMPS para resolver o sistema linear quando usado apenas um termo da expansão de Padé complexa. Para aproximações de grandes ângulos, métodos diretos são necessários. Para validar e avaliar as propriedades desses algoritmos de migração, usamos o modelo de sal SEG/EAGE para calcular a sua resposta ao impulso.

Implementações dos métodos de migração diferença finita e Fourier (FFD) usam fatoração direcional para acelerar a performance e economizar custo computacional. Entretanto essa técnica introduz anisotropia numérica que podem erroneamente posicionar os refletores em mergulho ao longo das direções em que o não foi aplicado a fatoração no operador de migração. Implementamos a migração FFD 3D, sem usar a técnica do fatoração direcional, no domínio da frequência usando aproximação de Padé complexa. Essa aproximação elimina a anisotropia numérica ao preço de maior custo computacional buscando a solução do campo de onda para um sistema linear de banda larga. Experimentos numéricos, tanto no modelo homogêneo e heterogêneo, mostram que a técnica da fatoração direcional produz notáveis erros de posicionamento dos refletores em meios com forte variação lateral de velocidade. Comparamos a performance de resolução do algoritmo de FFD usando o método iterativo gradiente biconjugado estabilizado (BICGSTAB) e o multifrontal massively parallel direct solver (MUMPS). Mostrando que a aproximação de Padé complexa é um eficiente precondicionador para o BICGSTAB, reduzindo o número de iterações em relação a aproximação de Padé real. O método iterativo BICGSTAB é mais eficiente que o método direto MUMPS, quando usamos apenas um termo da expansão de Padé complexa. Para maior ângulo de abertura do operador, mais termos da série são requeridos no operador de migração, e neste caso, a performance do método direto é mais eficiente. A validação do algoritmo e as propriedades da evolução computacional foram avaliadas para a resposta ao impulso do modelo de sal SEG/EAGE.
