Carbon nanofibers of 50–500 nm diameter and several micrometer length were synthesized by high-temperature pyrolysis of dihydro-2,5-furandione (C4H4O3) in the temperature range of 600–980 °C. The formation of both graphitic and non-graphitic structured carbon fibers was observed in high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The Raman spectra of the samples showed the presence of both the D and G bands of varying intensity and sharpness. The low-temperature electrical transport studies on the samples have shown interesting metal–insulator transitions. The films showed variable range hopping conduction in the insulating regime and power law behavior in the critical regime at low temperatures.

Amination reactions of 2,6-bis(primary amino)cyclotetraphosphazenes yield not only the expected (amino)cyclotetraphosphazenes but also novel trans-annular bridged bicyclic phosphazenes by an intramolecular substitution pathway. In addition, resins are formed in some reactions by an intermolecular condensation. The effect of substituents attached to the phosphazene ring, the attacking nucleophile and solvent on the formation of the trans-annular P-N-P bridge is considered in detail in relation to plausible reaction mechanisms. Analytical separation of bicyclic phosphazenes by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a reverse phase silica column is demonstrated. Structural features of bicyclic phosphazenes and salient aspects of their NVR spectroscopic data are discussed.

Making use of aerosol optical depths (AOD) derived from MODIS (onboard TERRA satellite) and winds from NCEP, and the fact that sea-salt optical depth over ocean is determined primarily by sea-surface wind speed, we examine the contribution of sea-salt to the composite aerosol optical depth ( AOD) over Arabian Sea ( AS), by developing empirical models for characterizing wind-speed dependence of sea-salt optical depth. We show that at high wind speeds, sea-salt contributes 81% to the coarse mode and 42% to the composite AOD in the southern AS. In contrast to this, over the northern AS, share of sea-salt to coarse mode and composite optical depth is only 35% and 16% respectively. Comparison of the sea-salt optical depth and coarse mode optical depth ( MODIS) showed excellent agreement. The sea-salt optical depth over AS at moderate to high wind speed is comparable to the anthropogenic AOD reported for this region during winter.

Isoselenocyanates derived from Boc/Z-amino acids are prepared by the reaction of the corresponding isonitriles with selenium powder in presence of triethylamine at reflux. The utility of these new classes of isoselenocyanates in the preparation of selenoureidodipeptidomimetics possessing both amino as well as carboxy termini has been accomplished. The H-1 NMR analysis confirmed that the protocol involving the conversion of isonitriles to isoselenocyanates and their use as coupling agents in assembling selenour-eido derivatives is free from racemization. Thioaroylate ions generated in situ from acyloxyphosphonium salts and tetrathiomolybdate upon Michael addition or ring opening of three membered systems led to a facile synthesis of S-funcationalized thioesters. While the ring opening of aziridines gave very good yield of the products, Micheal addition and epoxide ring opening gave moderate yields.(C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Purpose: Limbal stem cell deficiency is a challenging clinical problem and the current treatment involves replenishing the depleted limbal stem cell (LSC) pool by either limbal tissue transplantation or use of cultivated limbal epithelial cells (LEC). Our experience of cultivating the LEC on denuded human amniotic membrane using a feeder cell free method, led to identification of mesenchymal cells of limbus (MC-L), which showed phenotypic resemblance to bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-BM). To understand the transcriptional profile of these cells, microarray experiments were carried out. Methods: RNA was isolated from cultured LEC, MC-L and MSC-BM and microarray experiments were carried out by using Agilent chip (4x44 k). The microarray data was validated by using Realtime and semiquntitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results: The microarray analysis revealed specific gene signature of LEC and MC-L, and also their complementary role related to cytokine and growth factor profile, thus supporting the nurturing roles of the MC-L. We have also observed similar and differential gene expression between MC-L and MSC-BM.Conclusions: This study represents the first extensive gene expression analysis of limbal explant culture derived epithelial and mesenchymal cells and as such reveals new insight into the biology, ontogeny, and in vivo function of these cells.

In order to have access to chiral gels, a series of salts derived from (1R, 3S)-(+)-camphoric acid and various secondary amines were prepared based on supramolecular synthon rationale. Out of seven salts prepared, two showed moderate gelation abilities. The gels were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, table top rheology, scanning electron microscopy, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Structure property correlation based on X-ray diffraction techniques remain inconclusive indicating that some of the integrated part associated with the gelation phenomena requires a better understanding.

This Article addresses the formation of chiral supramolecular structures in the organogels derived from chiral organogelator 1R (or 2R), and its mixtures with its enantiomer (1S) and achiral analogue 3 by extensive circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic measurements. Morphological analysis by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were complemented by the measurements of their bulk properties by thermal stability and rheological studies. Specific molecular recognition events (1/3 vs 2/3) and solvent effects (isooctane vs dodecane) were found to be critical in the formation of chiral aggregates. Theoretical studies were also carried out to understand the interactions responsible for the formation of the superstructures.

Background: Signal transduction events often involve transient, yet specific, interactions between structurally conserved protein domains and polypeptide sequences in target proteins. The identification and validation of these associating domains is crucial to understand signal transduction pathways that modulate different cellular or developmental processes. Bioinformatics strategies to extract and integrate information from diverse sources have been shown to facilitate the experimental design to understand complex biological events. These methods, primarily based on information from high-throughput experiments, have also led to the identification of new connections thus providing hypothetical models for cellular events. Such models, in turn, provide a framework for directing experimental efforts for validating the predicted molecular rationale for complex cellular processes. In this context, it is envisaged that the rational design of peptides for protein-peptide binding studies could substantially facilitate the experimental strategies to evaluate a predicted interaction. This rational design procedure involves the integration of protein-protein interaction data, gene ontology, physico-chemical calculations, domain-domain interaction data and information on functional sites or critical residues. Results: Here we describe an integrated approach called ``PeptideMine'' for the identification of peptides based on specific functional patterns present in the sequence of an interacting protein. This approach based on sequence searches in the interacting sequence space has been developed into a webserver, which can be used for the identification and analysis of peptides, peptide homologues or functional patterns from the interacting sequence space of a protein. To further facilitate experimental validation, the PeptideMine webserver also provides a list of physico-chemical parameters corresponding to the peptide to determine the feasibility of using the peptide for in vitro biochemical or biophysical studies. Conclusions: The strategy described here involves the integration of data and tools to identify potential interacting partners for a protein and design criteria for peptides based on desired biochemical properties. Alongside the search for interacting protein sequences using three different search programs, the server also provides the biochemical characteristics of candidate peptides to prune peptide sequences based on features that are most suited for a given experiment. The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
