An improved measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson is derived from a combined fit to the reconstructed invariant mass spectra of the decay channels H→γγ and H→ZZ ∗ →4ℓ . The analysis uses the pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb −1 . The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is m H =125.36±0.37(stat)±0.18(syst) GeV . This result is based on improved energy-scale calibrations for photons, electrons, and muons as well as other analysis improvements, and supersedes the previous result from ATLAS. Upper limits on the total width of the Higgs boson are derived from fits to the invariant mass spectra of the H→γγ and H→ZZ ∗ →4ℓ decay channels.

We present a precise theoretical prediction for the signal-background interference process of gg(→ h ∗) → ZZ, which is useful to constrain the Higgs boson decay width and to measure Higgs couplings to the SM particles. The approximate NNLO K-factor is in the range of 2.05 − 2.45 (1.85 − 2.25), depending on M ZZ , at the 8 (13) TeV LHC. And the soft gluon resummation can increase the approximate NNLO result by about 10% at both the 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC. The theoretical uncertainties including the scale, uncalculated multi-loop amplitudes of the background and PDF+αs are roughly O(10%) at NNLL′. We also confirm that the approximate K-factors in the interference and the pure signal processes are the same.

The possibility of using spin-probe electron spin resonance (ESR) as a tool to study glass transition temperature, T g, of polymer electrolytes is explored in 4 hydroxy 2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidine N oxyl (TEMPOL) doped composite polymer electrolyte (PEG)46LiClO4 dispersed with nanoparticles of hydrotalcite. The T g is estimated from the measured values of T 50G, the temperature at which the extrema separation 2A zz of the broad powder spectrum decreases to 50 G. In another method, the correlation time τc for the spin probe dynamics was determined by computer simulation of the ESR spectra and T g has been identified as the temperature at which τc begins to show temperature dependence. While both methods give values of T g close to those obtained from differential scanning calorimetry, it is concluded that more work is required to establish spin-probe ESR as a reliable technique for the determination of T g.

Electronic transport in the high temperature paramagnetic regime of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides, La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), A=Ca, Sr, Ba, x similar or equal to 0.1-0.3, has been investigated using resistivity measurements. The main motivation for this work is to relook into the actual magnitude of the activation energy for transport in a number of manganites and study its variation as a function of hole doping (x), average A-site cation radius (< r(A)>), cationic disorder (sigma(2)) and strain (epsilon(zz)). We show that contrary to current practice, the description of a single activation energy in this phase is not entirely accurate. Our results clearly reveal a strong dependence of the activation energy on the hole doping as well as disorder. Comparing the results across different substituent species with different < r(A)> reveals the importance of sigma(2) as a metric to qualify any analysis based on (r(A)). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A detailed single-crystal EPR study of phase IV of lithium potassium sulphate below -138 degrees C has been carried out using NH3+, which substitutes for K+, as the paramagnetic probe. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated at -140 degrees C and yield an isotropic g=2.0034; (AH)XX=(AH)YY=25.3 G and (AH)ZZ=23.8 G; (AN)XX=8.1 G, (AN)YY=21.2 G and (AN)ZZ=25.9 G. In this phase there are 12 magnetically inequivalent K+ sites and their occurrence is ascribed to the loss of a c glide.

When the male is the heterogametic sex (XX♀-XY♂ or XX♀-XO♂), as inDrosophila, orthopteran insects, mammals andCaenorhabditis elegans, X-linked genes are subject to dosage compensation: the single X in the male is functionally equivalent to the two Xs in the female. However, when the female is heterogametic (ZZ♂-ZW♀), as in birds, butterflies and moths, Z-linked genes are apparently not dosage-compensated. This difference between X-linked and Z-linked genes raises fundamental questions about the role of dosage compensation. It is argued that (i) genes which require dosage compensation are primarily those that control morphogenesis and the prospective body plan; (ii) the products of these genes are required in disomic doses especially during oogenesis and early embryonic development; (iii) heterogametic females synthesize and store during oogenesis itself morphogenetically essential gene products - including those encoded by Z-linked genes — in large quantities; (iv) the abundance of these gene products in the egg and their persistence relatively late into embryogenesis enables heterogametic females to overcome the monosomic state of the Z chromosome in ZW embryos. Female heterogamety is predominant in birds, reptiles and amphibians, all of which have megalecithal eggs containing several thousand times more maternal RNA and other maternal messages than eggs of mammals,Caenorhabditis elegans, orDrosophila. This increase in egg size, yolk content and, concomitantly, the size of the maternal legacy to the embryo, may have facilitated female heterogamety and the absence of dosage compensation.

Single crystals of calcium hydrazine carboxylate, monohydrate have been studied by ESR of Mn2+ doped in the calcium sites. X-band ESR indicated a large crystal field splitting necessitating experiments at Q band. The analysis shows two magnetically inequivalent (but chemically equivalent) sites with g(xx) = 2.0042+/-0.0038, g(yy) = 2.0076 +/-00029, g(zz) =2.0314+/-0.001, A(zz) = 0.0099+/-0.0002 cm(-1), A(xx) = 0.0099+/-0.0002 cm(-1), A(yy) = 0.0082+/-0.0002cm(-1), D = 3/2D(zz) = 0.0558+/-0.0006cm(-1), and E = 1/2(D-xx-D-yy) = 0.0127+/-0.0002 cm(-1).One of the principal components of the crystal field, (D-zz), is found to be along the Ca<->Ca direction in the structure and a second one, (D-xx), along the perpendicular to the plane of the triangle formed by three neighbouring calciums. The A tensor is found to have an orientation different from that of the g and D tensors reflecting the low symmetry of the Ca2+ sites.
