Inappropriate treatments of frontal sinus fractures may lead to serious complications, such as mucopyocele, meningitis, and brain abscess. Assessment of nasofrontal duct injury is crucial, and nasofrontal duct injury requires sinus obliteration, which is often accomplished by autogenous grafts such as fat, muscle, or bone. These avascular grafts have an increased risk of resorption and infection and donor site morbidity. For these reasons, pericranial flap, which is vascular, should be used for frontal sinus obliteration. The pericranial flap presented with less morbidity procedure and has decreased infection rates, which justifies its use in frontal sinus obliteration. This study aimed to report a case of a comminuted frontal sinus fracture with a brief literature review, regarding the use of pericranial flap. The authors report a case of a 23-year-old male subject with a severely comminuted fracture of the anterior and posterior walls of the frontal sinus. The patient was successfully treated by cranialization with frontal sinus duct obliteration, using anterior pericranial flap. The patient was followed up for 16 months with no postoperative complication, such as infection. Pericranial flap is a good resource for frontal sinus duct obliteration because it is a durable and well-vascularized flap, which determines low rates of postoperative complications. We provide initial information regarding the population structure and genetic diversity of Stenella frontalis from the Caribbean and southeastern Brazil from analyses of mitochondrial control region sequences and sequences from the first intron of the α-lactalbumin gene. Comparisons with previously described S. frontalis sequences showed a high number of haplotypes shared between populations throughout their distribution range. High diversity was found for southeastern Brazil and Caribbean samples, and population structure analyses indicate significant differentiation among population units at the FST level, but not at the ΦST level. Significant differentiation at the FST level was found between the Caribbean population unit and all other populations units. These results suggest historical or present connectivity between the Azores and Madeira and the southeastern Brazil groups and population differentiation between the Caribbean and southeastern Brazil, supporting the notion of two separate stocks in the waters around the Atlantic coast of South America. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The State of Sao Paulo is the most developed area in Brazil and was impacted by persistent organic pollutants for several decades. This study investigated organochlorines in five species of small cetaceans (Pontoporia blainvillei, Stenella frontalis, Sotalia guianensis, Tursiops truncatus and Steno bredanensis) found dead along the coast of Sao Paulo between 1997 and 2003. DDTs (15.9 mu g g(-1) lipid: mean for all pooled individuals) and PCBs (8.08 mu g g(-1)) exhibited the highest concentrations in the animals, reflecting large amounts formerly used in Brazil. Lower levels of mirex (0.149 mu g g(-1)), HCB (0.051 mu g g(-1)), CHLs (0.008 mu g g(-1)) and HCHs (0.007 mu g g(-1)) were detected in all species. Residual pattern of DDTs in dolphins suggests that o,p`-DDT is more recalcitrant than p,p`-DDT in the body of the animals and/or the environment. In contrast to p,p`-DDT, residues of o,p`-DDT seem to be preferentially converted into o,p`-DDD rather than op-DDE. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: Patients with severe ptosis caused by poor or absent function of the levator muscle but with good frontalis muscle excursion usually benefit from a frontalis sling procedure. This is currently carried out using organic or inorganic material to connect the upper eyelid to the frontalis muscle. Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively 112 patients who underwent frontalis sling procedures between 1989 and 2011 using a preformed silicone implant suspensor to correct severe ptosis. Results: The results obtained using this technique were good or fair in 95.54 percent of the cases and poor in 4.46 percent of the cases. The authors discuss the results of the study and the cases in which the procedure should be indicated and highlight the advantages of the method. Conclusion: The availability of this low-cost sterile device, together with the fact that it is ready to use, requires less invasive surgery, saves time, and is sufficiently versatile to allow adjustments to be made at any time, makes the silicone eyelid sling an attractive choice for correcting ptosis. The aim of this study was to identify future distribution areas and propose actions to preserve passion fruit pollination service under a scenario of future climate change. We used four species of Xylocopa bees that are important for passion fruit pollination in Brazilian Tropical Savannas. We also used the known forage plant species (33 species) that are associated with this same area, since passion fruit flowers provide only nectar for bees and only during their blossoming period. We used species distribution modeling to predict the potential areas of occurrence for each bee and plant based on the current day distribution and a future climate scenario (moderate projections of climate change to 2050). We used a geographic information system to classify the models and to analyze the future areas for both groups of species. The current day distribution map showed that Xylocopa and plant species occurred primarily in the southern and central-eastern areas of the Brazilian Tropical Savannas. In the north, Xylocopa species only occurred in a small area between the states of Maranhão and Piauí while forage plant species were only observed in the northern part of the Tocantins State. However, both future scenarios (bees and plants) showed a shift in distribution, with occurrence predominantly detected in the northern areas of Brazilian Tropical Savannas. Possible conservation areas and the use of appropriate agricultural practices were suggested to ensure the maintenance of the bee/plant focal species.

The submitted work concentrated on the study of mRNA expression of two distinct GABA transporters, GAT-1 and GAT-3, in the rat brain. For the detection and quantification of the chosen mRNAs, appropriate methods had to be established. Two methods, ribonuclease protection assay (RPA) and competitive RT-PCR were emloyed in the present study. Competitive RT-PCR worked out to be 20 times more sensitive as RPA. Unlike the sensitivity, the fidelity of both techniques was comparable with respect to their intra- and inter-assay variability. The basal mRNA levels of GAT-1 and GAT-3 were measured in various brain regions. Messenger RNAs for both transporters were detected in all tested brain regions. Depending on the region, the observed mRNA level for GAT-1 was 100-300 higher than for GAT-3. The GAT-1 mRNA levels were similar in all tested regions. The distribution of GAT-3 mRNA seemed to be more region specific. The strongest GAT-3 mRNA expression was detected in striatum, medulla oblongata and thalamus. The lowest levels of GAT-3 were in cortex frontalis and cerebellum.Furthermore, the mRNA expression for GAT-1 and GAT-3 was analysed under altered physiological conditions; in kindling model of epilepsy and also after long-term treatment drugs modulating GABAergic transmission. In kindling model of epilepsy, altered GABA transporter function was hypothesised by During and coworkers (During et al., 1995) after observed decrease in binding of nipecotic acid, a GAT ligand, in hippocampus of kindled animals. In the present work, the mRNA levels were measured in hippocampus and whole brain samples. Neither GAT-1 nor GAT-3 showed altered transcription in any tested region of kindled animals compared to controls. This leads to conclusion that an altered functionality of GABA transporters is involved in epilepsy rather than a change in their expression. The levels of GAT-1 and GAT-3 mRNAs were also measured in the brain of rats chronically treated with diazepam or zolpidem, GABAA receptor agonists. Prior to the molecular biology tests, behavioural analysis was carried out with chronically and acutely treated animals. In two tests, open field and elevated plus-maze, the basal activity exploration and anxiety-like behaviour were analysed. Zolpidem treatment increased exploratory activity. There were observed no differencies between chronically and acutely treated animals. Diazepam increased exploratory activity and decresed anxiety-like behaviour when applied acutely. This effect disappeard after chronic administration of diazepam. The loss of effect suggested a development of tolerance to effects of diazepam following long-term administration. Double treatment, acute injection of diazepam after chronic diazepam treatment, confirmed development of a tolerance to effects of diazepam. Also, the mRNAs for GAT-1 and GAT-3 were analysed in cortex frontalis, hippocampus, cerebellum and whole brain samples of chronically treated animals. The mRNA levels for any of tested GABA transporters did not show significant changes in any of tested region neither after diazepam nor zolpidem treatment. Therefore, changes in GAT-1 and GAT-3 transcription are probably not involved in adaptation of GABAergic system to long-term benzodiazepine administration and so in development of tolerance to benzodiazepines.

It is a popular concept in clinical neurology that muscles of the lower face receive predominantly crossed cortico-bulbar motor input, whereas muscles of the upper face receive additional ipsilateral, uncrossed input. To test this notion, we used focal transcranial magnetic brain stimulation to quantify crossed and uncrossed cortico-muscular projections to 6 different facial muscles (right and left Mm. frontalis, nasalis, and orbicularis oris) in 36 healthy right-handed volunteers (15 men, 21 women, mean age 25 years). Uncrossed input was present in 78% to 92% of the 6 examined muscles. The mean uncrossed: crossed response amplitude ratios were 0.74/0.65 in right/left frontalis, 0.73/0.59 in nasalis, and 0.54/0.71 in orbicularis oris; ANOVA p>0.05). Judged by the sizes of motor evoked potentials, the cortical representation of the 3 muscles was similar. The amount of uncrossed projections was different between men and women, since men had stronger left-to-left projections and women stronger right-to-right projections. We conclude that the amount of uncrossed pyramidal projections is not different for muscles of the upper from those of the lower face. The clinical observation that frontal muscles are often spared in central facial palsies must, therefore, be explained differently. Moreover, gender specific lateralization phenomena may not only be present for higher level behavioural functions, but may also affect simple systems on a lower level of motor hierarchy.

The single Hochdorf burial was found in 1887 during construction work in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. It dates from between 320 and 250 BC. The calvarium, the left half of the pelvis and the left femur were preserved. The finding shows an unusual bony alteration of the skull. The aim of this study was to obtain a differential diagnosis and to examine the skull using various methods. Sex and age were determined anthropologically. Radiological examinations were performed with plain X-ray imaging and a multislice computed tomography (CT) scanner. For histological analysis, samples of the lesion were taken. The pathological processing included staining after fixation, decalcification, and paraffin embedding. Hard-cut sections were also prepared. The individual was female. The age at death was between 30 and 50 years. There is an intensely calcified bone proliferation at the right side of the os frontalis. Plain X-ray and CT imaging showed a large sclerotic lesion in the area of the right temple with a partly bulging appearance. The inner boundary of the lesion shows multi-edged irregularities. There is a diffuse thickening of the right side. In the left skull vault, there is a mix of sclerotic areas and areas which appear to be normal with a clear differentiation between tabula interna, diploë and tabula externa. Histology showed mature organised bone tissue. Radiological and histological findings favour a benign condition. Differential diagnoses comprise osteomas which may occur, for example, in the setting of hereditary adenomatous polyposis coli related to Gardner syndrome.

The Objective was to describe the contributions of Joseph Jules Dejerine and his wife Augusta Dejerine-Klumpke to our understanding of cerebral association fiber tracts and language processing. The Dejerines (and not Constantin von Monakow) were the first to describe the superior longitudinal fasciculus/arcuate fasciculus (SLF/AF) as an association fiber tract uniting Broca's area, Wernicke's area, and a visual image center in the angular gyrus of a left hemispheric language zone. They were also the first to attribute language-related functions to the fasciculi occipito-frontalis (FOF) and the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) after describing aphasia patients with degeneration of the SLF/AF, ILF, uncinate fasciculus (UF), and FOF. These fasciculi belong to a functional network known as the Dejerines' language zone, which exceeds the borders of the classically defined cortical language centers. The Dejerines provided the first descriptions of the anatomical pillars of present-day language models (such as the SLF/AF). Their anatomical descriptions of fasciculi in aphasia patients provided a foundation for our modern concept of the dorsal and ventral streams in language processing.

Introduction: Alcohol-dependency is a common disease with many negative consequences in the daily life. A typical symptom of alcoholic-patients is the persistent and uncontrollable desire to consume alcohol. Inspite of different treatments, alcohol-dependency has a relapse rate of about 85%. This high rate is facilitated by a dysfunction of cognitive control-processes. In order to understand this disease sustaining factor, the present study investigated the neurophysiological correlates of inhibition of alcoholic-patients in a neutral as well as an alcohol-related context. Methods: A total of 18 participants, (9 alcohol-dependent-patients (age range: 27-62 years), 9 healthy controls (age range: 29-60 years)) have been measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging while they participated in an alcohol-specific Go/NoGo-Task. Neurophysiological correlates of inhibition in an alcohol-related as well as a neutral context were compared in both groups. Results: When comparing correct stop-trials in alcohol-related to neutral context, only alcohol-dependent patients showed significant hyperactivation in frontal regions (superior and medial gyrus frontalis, anterior gyrus cinguli, gyrus paracentralis and the gyrus praecentralis). No significant differences were found in any of the behavioral analyses. Discussion: These preliminary results thus indicate that successful inhibition in a drug-related context demands additional resources in patients. Especially the hyperactivation of the anterior gyrus cinguli might be important because of its involvement in decision-processes. In the absent of deficits in behavioral data, this suggests that alcohol-dependent patients need more neuronal activity to achieve the same performance-level like healthy controls.
