Strontium concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr values were measured on pore-water and sedimentary carbonate samples from sediments recovered at Sites 1049-1053 on the Blake Spur during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 171B. These sites form a 40-km-long depth transect extending along the crest of the Blake Spur from near the upper edge of the Blake Escarpment (a steep cliff composed of Mesozoic carbonates) westward toward the interior of the Blake-Bahama Platform. Although these sites were selected for paleoceanographic purposes, they also form a hydrologic transect across the upper eastern flank of the Blake-Bahama Platform. Here, we use pore-water strontium concentrations and isotopes as a proxy to define patterns of fluid movement through the flanks of this platform. Pore-water strontium concentration increases with depth at all sites implying that strontium has been added during sediment burial and diagenesis. The isotopic values decrease from seawater-like values in the shallow samples (~0.70913) to values as low as 0.707342 in one of the deepest samples (~625 meters below seafloor). The change in pore-water strontium isotopic values is independent of the strontium isotopic compositions predicted from the host sediment age and measured on bulk carbonate in some samples. In most cases the difference between predicted sediment strontium isotopic composition and measured value is less than ±2 about the mean of the measured strontium value. Both the increase in concentration and the decrease in the strontium isotope values with increasing depth indicate that strontium was expelled from older carbonates. The strontium concentration and isotope profiles vary between sites according to their proximity to the Blake-Bahama Platform edge. Profiles from Site 1049 (nearest the platform edge) show the greatest amount of mixing with modern seawater, whereas the site most distal to the platform edge (Site 1052) shows the most significant influence of older, deeper carbonates on the pore-water strontium isotopic composition.

Stable isotope analyses and scanning electron micrographs have been carried out on six planktonic forminifera species, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Globorotalia tumida, Sphaeroidinella dehiscens, Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer and Globigerinoides quadrilobatus from eleven box-cores taken at increasing depths in the equatorial Ontong-Java Plateau (Pacific). This allows us to describe the way dissolution affects the microstructures of the tests of the different species and to quantify the changes of isotopic composition. We may conclude that: 1) dissolution effects on test morphology and stable isotope compositions are species dependent, species with a similar habitat showing a similar trend; 2) the shallow water, thin-shelled species are the first to disappear: scanning electron microscope (SEM) work shows alteration of outer layers. Deep water, thick-shelled species are present in all samples: SEM work shows breakdown and disparition of inner layers; 3) for all species there is a similar trend towards increasing delta18O values with increasing water depths and increasing dissolution. This effect may be as high as 0.6 ? per thousand meters for Globorotalia tumida; 4) below the lysocline, around 3500 m, it appears that 13C/12C ratios slightly increase towards equilibrium values for thick shelled species: G. tumida, P. obliquiloculata and S. dehiscens. 14C dates and isotope stratigraphy of two box-cores show that all samples are recent in age, and exclude upward mixing of glacial deposits as an important factor.

We develop a model for exponential decay of broadband pulses, and examine its implications for experiments on optical precursors. One of the signature features of Brillouin precursors is attenuation with a less rapid decay than that predicted by Beer's Law. Depending on the pulse parameters and the model that is adopted for the dielectric properties of the medium, the limiting z-dependence of the loss has been described as z(-1/2), z(-1/3), exponential, or, in more detailed descriptions, some combination of the above. Experimental results in the search for precursors are examined in light of the different models, and a stringent test for sub-exponential decay is applied to data on propagation of 500 femtosecond pulses through 1-5 meters of water. We present the first combined dissolved hafnium (Hf) and neodymium (Nd) concentrations and isotope compositions of deep water masses from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Eight full depth profiles were analyzed for Hf and twelve for Nd. Hafnium concentrations are generally depleted in the upper few hundred meters ranging between 0.2 pmol/kg and 0.4 pmol/kg and increase to relatively constant values of around 0.6 pmol/kg in the deeper water column. At the stations north of the Polar Front (PF), Nd concentrations increase linearly from about 10 pmol/kg at depths of ~ 200 m to up to 31 pmol/kg close to the bottom indicating particle scavenging and release. Within the Weddell Gyre (WG), however, Nd concentrations are essentially constant at 25 pmol/kg at depths greater than ~ 1000 m. The distributions of both elements show a positive correlation with dissolved silicon implying a close linkage to diatom biogeochemistry. Hafnium essentially shows invariant isotope compositions with values averaging at epsilon-Hf = +4.6, whereas Nd isotopes mark distinct differences between water masses, such as modified North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW, epsilon-Nd = -11 to -10) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW, epsilon-Nd = -8.6 to -9.6), but also waters locally advected via the Agulhas Current can be identified by their unradiogenic Nd isotope compositions. Mixing calculations suggest that a small fraction of Nd is removed by particle scavenging during mixing of water masses north of the PF. Nevertheless, the Nd isotope composition has apparently not been significantly affected by uptake and release of Nd from particles, as indicated by mixing calculations. A mixing envelope of an approximated North Pacific and a North Atlantic end-member shows that Nd isotope and concentration patterns in the Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) can be fully explained by ~ 30:70 percentage contributions of these respective end-members.

O18/O16 data on a depth profile of water samples from the Arctic Ocean reveal that near surface water is depleted in O18 by about 4 per mil, but water at depths greater than 350 meters reaches near normal open ocean water composition. The O18 profile very closely follows the salinity profile, with deltaO18 changing by about 0.8 per mil per 1 per mil salinity change. The results of deltaO18 measurements on the pelagic species Globigerina pachyderma from a composite core show that the deltaO18 value has not changed since the latter part of the last glacial period. This constancy we take to indicate that the temperature and the deltaO18 value of the water in which these foraminifera grew have not changed significantly since that time. Such a conclusion seems to imply that the present ice coverage in the Arctic Ocean has remained unchanged during the last 25,000 years. However, the deltaO18 value of benthonic foraminifera shows a shift of 1.2 per mil between the end of the last glacial period and the present warm period. This shift is consistent with the idea that the deep water mass of the Arctic Ocean is formed outside the Arctic basin. The information on the deltaO18 value of the benthonic foraminifera from the top of the core was used in conjunction with the data on deltaO18 and temperature of the bottom water to establish the constant in the empirical equation relating deltaO18 values to temperature for the preparation procedure used in our laboratory. Based on this calibration, the data confirm A. W. H. Bé's contention (personal communication, 1960) that G. pachyderma incorporates about one-half of its CaCO3 below 300 meters.

Basalt formation waters collected from Hole 504B at sub-basement depths of 194, 201, 365, and 440 meters show inverse linear relationships between 87Sr/86Sr and Ca, 87Sr/86Sr and Sr, and K and Ca. If the Ca content of a fully reacted formation water end-member is assumed to be 1340 ppm, the K, Sr, and 87Sr/86Sr values for the end-member are 334 ppm, 7.67 ppm, and 0.70836, respectively. With respect to contemporary seawater at Hole 504B, K is depleted by 13%, Sr is enriched by 2.7%, and 87Sr/86Sr is depleted by 0.8%. The Sr/Ca ratio of the formation water (0.0057) is much lower than that of seawater (0.018) but is similar to the submarine hot spring waters from the Galapagos Rift and East Pacific Rise and to geothermal brines from Iceland. At the intermediate temperatures represented by the Hole 504B formation waters (70°-105°C), the interaction between seawater and the ocean crust produces large solution enrichments in Ca, the addition of a significant basalt Sr isotope component accompanied by only a minor elemental Sr component, and the removal from solution of seawater K. The Rb, Cs, and Ba contents of the formation waters appear to be affected by contamination, possibly from drilling muds.

Recent studies have suggested that the marine contribution of methane from shallow regions and melting marine terminating glaciers may have been underestimated. Here we report on methane sources and potential sinks associated with methane seeps in Cumberland Bay, South Georgia's largest fjord system. The average organic carbon content in the upper 8 meters of the sediment is around 0.65 wt.%; this observation combined with Parasound data suggest that the methane gas accumulations probably originate from peat-bearing sediments currently located several tens of meters below the seafloor. Only one of our cores indicates upward advection; instead most of the methane is transported via diffusion. Sulfate and methane flux estimates indicate that a large fraction of methane is consumed by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Carbon cycling at the sulfate-methane transition (SMT) results in a marked fractionation of the d13C-CH4 from an estimated source value of -65 per mil to a value as low as -96 per mil just below the SMT. Methane concentrations in sediments are high, especially close to the seepage sites (~40 mM); however, concentrations in the water column are relatively low (max. 58 nM) and can be observed only close to the seafloor. Methane is trapped in the lowermost water mass, however, measured microbial oxidation rates reveal very low activity with an average turnover of 3.1 years. We therefore infer that methane must be transported out of the bay in the bottom water layer. A mean sea-air flux of only 0.005 nM/m²/s confirms that almost no methane reaches the atmosphere.

Data on the N2O contents of marine sea water from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean are presented. The N2O content of marine air is rather constant. The data are in accordance with earlier measurements. The sea water down to depth greater tha 1000 meters is considerably aupersaturated with N2O with respect to air. Supersaturation values obtain from surface water allow the conclusion that part of the North Atlantic acts as a net cource of atmospheric N2O.

Persian Gulf region is globally of great importance due to its economical and political reasons. The importance lies in oil sources and sea exports. Geophysical phenomena dominated in the water circulation affected this region is called Monsoon it stretches from African coasts to the half way of Red Seal affected all coasts of Persian Gulf and goes toward east to the Indian ocean. Other essential factors in the water circulation in this region are net evaporation (several meters in per year), high density and high salinity. In this article the effects of wind stress and evaporation in the water circulation in the region will be considered and model equations for wind forces, density, pressure, gradient, and bottom friction for Persian Gulf will be discussed.
