CaSiO3 : Dy3+ (1-5 mol. %) nanophosphors were synthesized by a simple low-temperature solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the phosphors are crystalline and can be indexed to a monoclinic phase. Scanning electron micrographs exhibited faceted plates and angular crystals of different sizes with a porous nature. Photoluminescence properties of the Dy3+-doped CaSiO3 phosphors were observed and analyzed. Emission peaks at 483, 573 and 610 nm corresponding to Dy3+ were assigned as F-4(9/2)-> H-6(15/2), F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2) and F-4(9/2) -> H-6(11/2) transitions, respectively, and dominated by the Dy3+ F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2) hyperfine transition. Experimental results revealed that the luminescence intensity was affected by both heat treatment and the concentration of Dy3+ (1-5 mol. %) in the CaSiO3 host. Optimal luminescence conditions were achieved when the concentration of Dy3+ was 2 mol. %. UV-visible absorption features an intense band at 240 nm, which corresponds to an O-Si ligand-to-metal charge transfer band in the SiO32- group. The optical energy band gap for the undoped sample was found to be 5.45 eV, whereas in Dy3+-doped phosphors it varies in the range 5.49-5.65 eV. The optical energy gap widens with increase of Dy3+ ion dopant.

Body-centered-tetragonal (BCT) ZnS nanocrystals have been synthesized, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, by using the chemical coprecipitation method at higher synthesis temperatures of 65 and 95 degrees C. It is confirmed from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies that in the high-temperature-synthesized samples, cubic and BCT phases coexist, in contrast to the room-temperature-synthesized sample, which consists of only cubic phase with sizes of the particles lying between 2 and 3 nm. The sizes of BCT phase nanocrystals are bigger than those of cubic phase of ZnS. The presence of BCT phase of ZnS in the samples is increased from 40 to 90% when the temperature of synthesis is increased from 65 to 95 degrees C. The nanocrystalline nature and UV-Vis absorption characteristics of the prepared samples have been studied with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a UV-Visible pectrophotometer, respectively. The room-temperature-synthesized ZnS sample shows photoluminescence (PL) emission in the blue region with multiple peaks, whereas the high-temperature-synthesized samples show PL emissions in the visible region. The Gaussian fittings of the measured PL spectra shows that three PL peaks at 429, 477, and 525 nm are appeared in the 65 degrees C sample and two peaks at 491 and 540 nm appear in the 95 degrees C sample with the enhanced PL intensity of the green peak at 540 nm. Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been deposited on glass substrates via sol-gel technique using zinc acetate dihydrate as precursor by spin coating of the sol at 2000 rpm. Effects of annealing temperature on optical, structural and photo luminescence properties of the deposited ZnO films have been investigated. The phase transition from amorphous to polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure was observed at an annealing temperature of 400 degrees C. An average transmittance of 87% in the visible region has been obtained at room temperature. The optical transmittance has slightly increased with increase of annealing temperature. The band gap energy was estimated by Tauc's method and found to be 3.22 eV at room temperature. The optical band gap energy has decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity increased with annealing temperature up to 200 degrees C and decreased at 300 degrees C. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CaSiO3:Eu3+ (1-5 mol%) red emitting phosphors have been synthesized by a low-temperature solution combustion method. The phosphors have been well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical spectroscopy. PXRD patterns reveal monoclinic CaSiO3 phase can be obtained at 900 degrees C. The SEM micrographs show the crystallites with irregular shape, mostly angular. Upon 254 nm excitation, the phosphor show characteristic fluorescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) of the Eu3+ ions. The electronic transition located at 614 nm corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(2) of Eu3+ ions, which is stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 593 nm corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(1) of Eu3+ ions. Different pathways involved in emission process have been studied. Concentration quenching has been observed for Eu3+ concentration >4 mol%. UV-visible absorption shows an intense band at 240 nm in undoped and 270 nm in Eu3+ doped CaSiO3 which is attributed to oxygen to silicon (O-Si) ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) band in the SiO32- group. The optical energy band gap is widened with increase of Eu3+ ion dopant. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report a Raman study of single crystal pyrochlore Er(2)Ti(2)O(7) as a function of temperature from 12 to 300 K. In addition to the phonons, various photoluminescence (PL) lines of Er(3+) in the visible range are also observed. Our Raman data show an anomalous red-shift of two phonons (one at similar to 200 cm(-1) and another at similar to 520 cm(-1)) upon cooling from room temperature which is attributed to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. However, the phonons at similar to 310, 330, and 690 cm(-1) initially show a blue-shift upon cooling from room temperature down to about 130 K, followed by a red-shift, indicating a structural deformation at similar to 130 K. The intensities of the PL bands associated with the transitions between the various levels of the ground state manifold ((4)I(15/2)) and the (2)H(11/2) as well as (4)S(3/2) excited state manifolds of Er(3+) show a change at similar to 130 K. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the peak position of the two PL bands shows a change in their slope (d(omega)/d(T)) at similar to 130 K, thus further strengthening the proposal of a structural deformation. The temperature dependence of the peak positions of the PL bands has been analyzed using the theory of optical dephasing in crystals.

Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting material with favorable electrochemical properties. In the present studies, carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has been synthesized from TiC particles, as well as TiC films coated on stainless steel substrate via thermal annealing under various conditions. Several C-TiO2 substrates are synthesized by varying experimental, conditions and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. C-TiO2 in the dry state (in powder form as well as in film form) is subsequently used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals corresponding to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrothiophenol by utilizing chemical enhancement based on charge-transfer interactions. Carbon, a nonmetal dopant in TiO2, improves the intensities of Raman signals, compared, to undoped TiO2. Significant dependence of Raman intensity on carbon doping is observed. Ameliorated performance obtained using C-TiO2 is attributed to the presence of surface defects that originate due to carbon as a dopant, which, in turn,, triggers charge transfer between TiO2 and analyte. The C-TiO2 substrates are subsequently regenerated for repetitive use by illuminating an analyte-adsorbed substrate with visible light for a period of 5 h.

Here, we report the ZnO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) based photodetectors that can response to ultraviolet as well as visible light. The temporal response of the heterostructures for various excitations in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible range are performed. The time constants are found to be excitation-dependent, the response to visible light is better as compared to UV. The reason behind the better response to UV light is the high level of defects present in ZnO as confirmed by the photoluminescence (PL) measurements. This is corroborated by the time resolved fluorescence (TRF) measurements which provides sufficient information behind the slow response time under the UV excitations. The possible explanation being the non-radiative recombinations occurring due to the traps or impurities present in the film which slows down the photoresponse.

The photocatalytic activity of commercial titanium dioxide under UV and visible radiation was improved by composites of tungsten trioxide (WO3) with TiO2. WO3 was prepared by solution combustion synthesis and the mixed oxides/composites of WO3-TiO2 were prepared in different weight ratios (0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) by physical mixing. These catalysts were characterized by XRD, DRS, BET, SEM, TEM, pH drift method, TGA and photoluminescence. The photocatalytic activity varies with the WO3 loading in the composites. The optimum loading of WO3 in the composites was found to be 15 wt% for both UV and visible radiation. This loading showed faster dye degradation rate than commercial TiO2 (TiO2-C) and WO3 (WO3-C). The effect of initial concentrations of methylene blue (MB) and orange G (OG) and the effect of the functional group on dye degradation was studied with both anionic and cationic dyes with 15 wt% WO3-TiO2. Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films with different indium compositions were grown on p-type boron doped Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effect of indium concentration on the structural, optical and electrical properties of the film was studied. XRD, XPS and Raman studies confirm the single phase formation and successful doping of In in to ZnO. We observed various photoluminescence emissions, ranging from UV to visible, with the incorporation of In into ZnO. Room temperature Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics showed good p-n junction properties for n-type-undoped and In doped ZnO with p-type substrates. The turn on voltage was observed to be decreasing with increase in In composition.

Nanosized cerium and nitrogen co-doped TiO2 (Ce-TiO2-xNx) was synthesized by sol gel method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FESEM, Fourier transform infrared, N-2 adsorption and desorption methods, photoluminescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) DRS techniques. PXRD analysis shows the dopant decreases the crystallite sizes and slows the crystallization of the titania matrix. XPS confirm the existence of cerium ion in +3 or +4 state, and nitrogen in -3 state in Ce-TiO2-xNx. The modified surface of TiO2 provides highly active sites for the dyes at the periphery of the Ce-O-Ti interface and also inhibits Ce particles from sintering. UV-visible DRS studies show that the metal-metal charge transfer (MMCT) of Ti/Ce assembly (Ti4+/Ce3+ -> Ti3+/Ce4+) is responsible for the visible light photocatalytic activity. Photoluminescence was used to determine the effect of cerium ion on the electron-hole pair separation between the two interfaces Ce-TiO2-xNx and Ce2O3. This separation increases with the increase of cerium and nitrogen ion concentrations of doped samples. The degradation kinetics of methylene blue and methyl violet dyes in the presence of sol gel TiO2, Ce-TiO2-xNx and commercial Degussa P25 was determined. The higher visible light activity of Ce-TiO2-xNx was due to the participation of MMCT and interfacial charge transfer mechanism.

Dual photoluminescence (PL) emission characteristics of Mn2+ doped ZnS (ZnS:Mn) quantum dots (QDs) have drawn a lot of attention recently. However, here we report the effect of thermal annealing on the PL emission characteristics of uncapped ZnS:Mn QDs of average sizes similar to 2-3 nm, synthesized by simple chemical precipitation method by using de-ionized (DI) water at room temperature. As-synthesized samples show dual PL emissions, having one UV PL band centred at similar to 400 nm and the other in the visible region similar to 610 nm. But when the samples are isochronally annealed for 2 h at 100-600 degrees C temperature range in air, similar to 90% quenching of Mn2+ related visible PL emission intensity takes place at the annealing temperature of 600 degrees C. X-ray diffraction data show that the as-synthesized cubic ZnS has been converted to wurtzite ZnO at 600 degrees C annealing temperature. The nanostructural properties of the samples are also determined by transmission electron micrograph, electron probe micro-analyser and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic property of the annealed ZnS:Mn sample has been demonstrated and photo-degradation efficiency of the as-synthesized and 600 degrees C annealed ZnS:Mn sample has been found out to be similar to 35% and similar to 61%, respectively, for the degradation of methylene blue dye under visible light irradiation. The synthesized QDs may find significant applications in future optoelectronic devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The current study involves synthesis of a series of Tb3+ doped ZrO2 nanophosphors by solution combustion method using oxalyl dihydrazide as fuel. The as-formed ZrO2:Tb3+ nanophosphors having different concentrations of Tb3+ (1-11 mol%) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Visible spectroscopic techniques and the materials were subjected to photoluminescence and photocatalytic dye decolorization studies. The PXRD analysis indicates the formation of tetragonal symmetry up to 5 mol% concentration of Tb3+. Further increase in Tb3+ concentration has lead to cubic phase formation and the same was confirmed by Rietveld refinement analysis. SEM images revealed that material was highly porous in nature comprising of large voids and cracks with irregular morphology. TEM and SAED images clearly confirm the formation of high quality tetragonal nanocrystals. The emissive properties of nanophosphors were found to be dependent on Tb3+ dopant concentration. The green emission of the material was turned to white emission with the increase of Tb3+ ion concentration. The photocatalytic activities of these nanophosphors were probed for the decolorization of Congo red under UV and Sunlight irradiation. All the photocatalysts showed enhanced activity under UV light compared to Sunlight. The photocatalyst with 7 mol% Tb3+ showed enhanced activity attributed to effective separation of charge carriers due to phase transformation from tetragonal to cubic. The influence of crystallite size and PL on charge carrier trapping-recombination dynamics was investigated. The study successfully demonstrates synthesis of tetragonal and cubic ZrO2:Tb3+ green nanophosphors with superior photoluminescence and photocatalytic activities. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Eu3+-activated layered BiOCl phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method at relatively low temperature and shorter duration (400 degrees C for 1 h). All the samples were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with the space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies confirmed the plate-like morphology. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescent D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The electric dipole transition located at 620 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 594 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). The evaluated Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors were close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ and Y2O2S:Eu3+ red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition probability (A(tot)), radiative lifetime (tau(rad)), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau(rad)) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The experimental decay curves of the D-5(0) level in Eu3+-activated BiOCl have a single exponential profile. In comparison with other Eu3+ doped materials, Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors have a long lifetime (tau(exp)), low non-radiative relaxation rate (W-NR), high quantum efficiency (eta) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau(rad)). The determined radiative properties revealed the usefulness of Eu3+-activated BiOCl in developing red lasers as well as optical display devices. Further, these samples showed efficient photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye under visible light irradiation. These photocatalysts are useful for the removal of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in water.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) uniformly decorated with nano-anatase TiO2 particles corresponding to different TiO2-CNT weight ratios (up to 90 % TiO2:10 % CNT) were prepared by employing sol-gel process. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, Raman, Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Photoluminescence, BET surface area and diffuse reflectance measurements. The composites show visible light assisted photocatalytic property, for example, the 90 % TiO2-10 % CNT composite completely degrades Indigo Carmine dye within 1 h of exposure to visible light. Similarly, Orange G and Congo Red dyes were decomposed within 2 h under visible light irradiation. The excellent visible light photocatalytic property of the composite is attributed to the synergetic effect of photoexcitation and photosensitization. This is due to the special nanoarchitecture wherein TiO2 nanoparticles are anchored to CNT surface that provides high specific interfacial area for photon absorption and electron trapping. Visible light assisted degradation profile of Indigo Carmine in the presence of TiO2-CNT nanocomposite and TEM image of the TiO2-CNT nanocomposite.

A series of Bi1-xEuxOX (X = F and Br; x = 0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) phosphors were synthesized at relatively low temperature and short duration (500 degrees C, 1 h). Rietveld refinement results verified that all the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The magnetic dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) transition dominates the emission of BiOF:Eu3+, while the electric dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) peak was stronger in BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors. The evaluated CIE color coordinates for Bi0.95Eu0.05OBr (0.632, 0.358) are close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ (0.645, 0.347) and Y2O2S:Eu3+ (0.647, 0.343) red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition rates (A), branching ratios (beta), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. It was observed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have a long lifetime (tau) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) as compared to reported Eu3+ doped materials. Furthermore, these compounds exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye under visible light irradiation. The determined radiative properties and photocatalytic results revealed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have potential applications in energy and environmental remedies, such as to develop red phosphors for white light-emitting diodes, red lasers and to remove toxic organic industrial effluents.
