Using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have studied the mechanical properties of ZnS/CdS core/shell nanowires. Our results show that the coating of a few-atomic-layer CdS shell on the ZnS nanowire leads to a significant change in the stiffness of the core/shell nanowires compared to the stiffness of pure ZnS nanowires. The binding energy between the core and shell region decreases due to the lattice mismatch at the core-shell interface. This reduction in binding energy plays an important role in determining the stiffness of a core/shell nanowire. We have also investigated the effects of the shell on the thermal conductivity and melting behavior of the nanowires.

An experimental assessment of Li2MnO3 has been conducted, in conjunction with related Mn(IV) oxides, to investigate its red colour and photoluminescence. Optical absorption spectra revealed strong band gap absorption, with a sharp edge at similar to 610 nm and a transparent region between similar to 610 and similar to 650 nm, giving rise to the red colour of this compound. Octahedral Mn(IV) ligand field transitions have been observed in the excitation spectra of Li2MnO3, corresponding both to Mn(IV) at ideal sites and displaced in Li sites in the rock salt-based layered structure of Li2MnO3. Optical excitation at ligand field transition energies produces tunable emission in the red-yellow-green region, rendering Li2MnO3 a unique Mn(IV) oxide. The honeycomb-ordered LiMn6] units in its structure are probably the origin of both the absorption and the photoluminescent properties of Li2MnO3.

We report on the tunable photoluminescence characteristics of porous ZnO microsheets fabricated within 1-5 min of microwave irradiation in the presence of a capping agent such as citric acid, and mixture of citric acid with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The UV emission intensity reduces to 60% and visible emission increases tenfold when the molar concentration of citric acid is doubled. Further diminution of the intensity of UV emission (25%) is observed when PVP is mixed with citric acid. The addition of nitrogen donor ligands to the parent precursor leads to a red shift in the visible luminescence. The deep level emission covers the entire visible spectrum and gives an impression of white light emission from these ZnO samples. The detailed luminescence mechanism of our ZnO samples is described with the help of a band diagram constructed by using the theoretical models that describe the formation energy of the defect energy levels within the energy band structure. Oxygen vacancies play the key role in the variation of the green luminescence in the ZnO microsheets. Our research findings provide an insight that it is possible to retain the microstructure and simultaneously introduce defects into ZnO. The growth of the ZnO microsheets may be due to the self assembly of the fine sheets formed during the initial stage of nucleation.

In this work, it is demonstrated that the in situ growth of oriented nanometric aggregates of partially inverted zinc ferrite can potentially pave a way to alter and tune magnetocrystalline anisotropy that, in turn, dictates ferromagnetic resonance frequency (f(FMR)) by inducing strain due to aggregation. Furthermore, the influence of interparticle interaction on magnetic properties of the aggregates is investigated. Mono-dispersed zinc ferrite nanoparticles (<5 nm) with various degrees of aggregation were prepared through decomposition of metal-organic compounds of zinc (II) and iron (III) in an alcoholic solution under controlled microwave irradiation, below 200 degrees C. The nanocrystallites were found to possess high degree of inversion (>0.5). With increasing order of aggregation in the samples, saturation magnetization (at 5 K) is found to decrease from 38 emu/g to 24 emu/g, while coercivity is found to increase gradually by up to 100% (525 Oe to 1040 Oe). Anisotropy-mediated shift of f(FMR) has also been measured and discussed. In essence, the result exhibits an easy way to control the magnetic characteristics of nanocrystalline zinc ferrite, boosted with significant degree of inversion, at GHz frequencies. A new TPE based low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) which displays both AIE and MCIE phenomena in gel state has been synthesized. LMWG self-assembles to form 1D nanofibers which undergo morphology transformation to coordination polymer gel (CPG) nanotubes upon metal ion coordination. CPG shows enhanced mechanical stability along with tunable emission properties.

A tunable DS-DBR laser is demonstrated for uncooled WDM C-band channel generation with tight spacing (SOGHz) and low thermal drift (±2.5GHz) up to 70°C. 2.5Gb/s direct modulation with transmission over a 75km link is achieved. © 2000 Optical Society of America.

We present for the first time a comprehensive study of the static and dynamic properties of a coolerless tunable three-section DBR laser. Wavelength tuning and thermal drift under uncooled conditions are investigated. Variance of modulation bandwidth with temperature rise and wavelength control is studied, and then verified by uncooled direct modulation performance with clear open eye diagrams. Satisfactory direct modulation is demonstrated at bit rate of up to 6Gbit/s, which is believed to be the fastest out of devices of similar structure so far.

Herein we report a low-threshold organic laser device based on semiconducting poly(9, 9′ -dioctylfluoren-2,7-diyl-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) encapsulated in a mechanically stretchable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. We take advantage of the natural flexibility of PDMS to alter the periodicity of the distributed feedback grating which in turn tunes the gain wavelength at which the resonant feedback is obtained. This way, we demonstrate that low-threshold lasing [6.1 μJ cm-2 (5.3 nJ)] is maintained over a large stretching range of 0%-7% which translates into a tuning range of about 20 nm. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
