This thesis is concerned with an investigation of the anodic behaviour of ruthenium and iridium in aqueous solution and particularly of oxygen evolution on these metals. The latter process is of major interest in the large-scale production of hydrogen gas by the electrolysis of water. The presence of low levels of ruthenium trichloride ca. 10-4 mol dm-3 in acid solution give a considerable increase in the rate of oxygen evolution from platinum and gold, but not graphite, anodes. The mechanism of this catalytic effect was investigated using potential step and a.c. impedance technique. Earlier suggestions that the effect is due to catalysis by metal ions in solution were proved to be incorrect and it was shown that ruthenium species were incorporated into the surface oxide film. Changes in the oxidation state of these ruthenium species is probably responsible for the lowering of the oxygen overvoltage. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of the reaction were complicated by the fact that at constant potential the rates of both the catalysed and the uncatalysed oxygen evolution processes exhibit an appreciable, continuous decrease with either time or degree of oxidation of the substrate. The anodic behaviour of iridium in the oxide layer region has been investigated using conventional electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry. Applying a triangular voltage sweep at 10 Hz, 0.01 to 1.50V increases the amount of electric charge which the surface can store in the oxide region. This activation effect and the mechanism of charge storage is discussed in terms of both an expanded lattice theory for oxide growth on noble metals and a more recent theory of irreversible oxide formation with subsequent stoichiometry changes. The lack of hysteresis between the anodic and cathodic peaks at ca. 0.9 V suggests that the process involved here is proton migration in a relatively thick surface layer, i.e. that the reaction involved is some type of oxide-hydroxide transition. Lack of chloride ion inhibition in the anodic region also supports the irreversible oxide formation theory; however, to account for the hydrogen region of the potential sweep a compromise theory involving partial reduction of the outer regions of iridium oxide film is proposed. The loss of charge storage capacity when the activated iridium surface is anodized for a short time above ca. 1.60 V is attributed to loss by corrosion of the outer active layer from the metal surface. The behaviour of iridium at higher anodic potentials in acid solution was investigated. Current-time curves at constant potential and Tafel plots suggested that a change in the mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction occurs at ca. 1.8 V. Above this potential, corrosion of the metal occurred, giving rise to an absorbance in the visible spectrum of the electrolyte (λ max = 455 nm). It is suggested that the species involved was Ir(O2)2+. A similar investigation in the case of alkaline electrolyte gave no evidence for a change in mechanism at 1.8 V and corrosion of the iridium was not observed. Oxygen evolution overpotentials were much lower for iridium than for platinum in both acidic and alkaline solutions.

Herein we present a study on the physical/chemical properties of a new Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) based on N-methylacetamide (MAc) and lithium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (LiTFSI). Due to its interesting properties, such as wide liquid-phase range from -60°C to 280°C, low vapor pressure, and high ionic conductivity up to 28.4mScm at 150°C and at x=1/4, this solution can be practically used as electrolyte for electrochemical storage systems such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and/or lithium ion batteries (LiBs). Firstly, relationships between its transport properties (conductivity and viscosity) as a function of composition and temperature were discussed through Arrhenius' Law and Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equations, as well as by using the Walden classification. From this investigation, it appears that this complex electrolyte possesses a number of excellent transport properties, like a superionic character for example. Based on which, we then evaluated its electrochemical performances as electrolyte for EDLCs and LiBs applications by using activated carbon (AC) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO) electrodes, respectively. These results demonstrate that this electrolyte has a good compatibility with both electrodes (AC and LiFePO) in each testing cell driven also by excellent electrochemical properties in specific capacitance, rate and cycling performances, indicating that the LiTFSI/MAc DES can be a promising electrolyte for EDLCs and LiBs applications especially for those requiring high safety and stability. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The present work reports a comparative study on the performances of two bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide-based protic (PIL) and aprotic (AIL) ionic liquids, namely, trimethyl-ammonium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([HN][TFSI], PIL) and trimethyl-sulfonium bis[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl]imide ([S][TFSI], AIL), as mixtures with three molecular solvents: gamma butyrolactone (?-BL), propylene carbonate (PC), and acetonitrile (ACN) as electrolytes for supercapacitor applications. After an analysis of their transport properties as a function of temperature, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements were conducted at 25 and -30 C to investigate the performance of these mixtures as electrolytes for supercapacitors using activated carbon as the electrode material. Surprisingly, for each solvent investigated, no significant differences were observed between the electrolytes based on the PIL and AIL in their electrochemical performance due to the presence or the absence of the labile proton. Furthermore, good specific capacitances were observed in the case of ?-BL-based electrolytes even at low temperature. Capacitances up to 131 and 80 F·g are observed for the case of the [S][TFSI] + ?-BL mixture at 25 and -30 C, respectively. This latter result is very promising particularly for the formulation of new environmentally friendly electrolytes within energy storage systems even at low temperatures. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

First principles calculations with molecular dynamics are
utilized to simulate a simplified electrical double layer formed in the
active electric potential region during the electrocatalytic oxidation of
ethanol on Pd electrodes running in an alkaline electrolyte. Our
simulations provide an atomic level insight into how ethanol oxidation
occurs in fuel cells: New mechanisms in the presence of the simplified
electrical double layer are found to be different from the traditional
ones; through concerted-like dehydrogenation paths, both acetaldehyde
and acetate are produced in such a way as to avoid a variety of
intermediates, which is consistent with the experimental data obtained
from in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Our work shows that adsorbed OH on
the Pd electrode rather than Pd atoms is the active center for the
reactions; the dissociation of the C−H bond is facilitated by the
adsorption of an OH− anion on the surface, resulting in the formation
of water. Our calculations demonstrate that water dissociation rather than H desorption is the main channel through which
electrical current is generated on the Pd electrode. The effects of the inner Helmholtz layer and the outer Helmholtz layer are
decoupled, with only the inner Helmholtz layer being found to have a significant impact on the mechanistics of the reaction. Our
results provide atomic level insight into the significance of the simplified electrical double layer in electrocatalysis, which may be
of general importance.

This thesis consists of a study of the effect of electrode films and overlayer films on the electrical properties of certain metal films. The films have been prepared on glass substrates by thermal evapouration in a vaccum 10 terr. The properties of Al films on Ag, Al,Au and Cu films on In electrodes ,and Bi/Ag bilayer films have been studied. The influence of annealing electrodes at higher temperature on the electrical properties of metal films has also been investigated. Further the effect of varying layer thickness in the bilayer films ,both annealed at higher temperature and annealed at room temperature have been examined.

We present a kinetic double layer model coupling aerosol surface and bulk chemistry (K2-SUB) based on the PRA framework of gas-particle interactions (Poschl-Rudich-Ammann, 2007). K2-SUB is applied to a popular model system of atmospheric heterogeneous chemistry: the interaction of ozone with oleic acid. We show that our modelling approach allows de-convoluting surface and bulk processes, which has been a controversial topic and remains an important challenge for the understanding and description of atmospheric aerosol transformation. In particular, we demonstrate how a detailed treatment of adsorption and reaction at the surface can be coupled to a description of bulk reaction and transport that is consistent with traditional resistor model formulations. From literature data we have derived a consistent set of kinetic parameters that characterise mass transport and chemical reaction of ozone at the surface and in the bulk of oleic acid droplets. Due to the wide range of rate coefficients reported from different experimental studies, the exact proportions between surface and bulk reaction rates remain uncertain. Nevertheless, the model results suggest an important role of chemical reaction in the bulk and an approximate upper limit of similar to 10(-11) cm(2) s(-1) for the surface reaction rate coefficient. Sensitivity studies show that the surface accommodation coefficient of the gas-phase reactant has a strong non-linear influence on both surface and bulk chemical reactions. We suggest that K2-SUB may be used to design, interpret and analyse future experiments for better discrimination between surface and bulk processes in the oleic acid-ozone system as well as in other heterogeneous reaction systems of atmospheric relevance.

Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. The effect of the sintering method on the microstructural and electrical properties of (Pb(0.89)Nd(0.02)La(0.09))(Zr(0.65)Ti(0.35))O(3) (PNLZT) ceramics was studied by impedance spectroscopy. Structural and microstructural analyses were performed using x-ray and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Two different sintering routes were employed: the conventional and the hot-pressing sintering methods. The impedance analysis provided a convincing evidence for the existence of both grain (g) and grain boundary (gb) contributions to the conduction process. An equivalent circuit for the impedance behaviour has been proposed and discussed. The variation in the sintering method produces significant changes in the grain and grain boundary conductivities. For the grain effect, the main conduction mechanism has been associated with oxygen vacancy migration. Otherwise, for grain boundary conductivity the impedance behaviour has been discussed in terms of the brick-layer and the constriction resistance models (BLM and CRM, respectively).

SnO2:Sb multi-layer coatings were prepared by the Pechini method. An investigation was made of the influence of the concentration of Sb2O3 and the viscosity of the precursor solution on the electrical and optical properties of SnO2 thin films. The use of a multi-layer system as an alternative form of increasing the packing and. thus. decreasing porosity proved to be efficient, decreasing the system's resistivity without altering its optical properties. The influence of layer-by-layer films of polyaniline and Ni-tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (PANI/Ni-TS-Pc) on the electrical performance of polymeric light-emitting diodes (PLED) made from (poly[2-methoxy-5-(2`-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene]) (MEH-PPV) is investigated by using current versus voltage measurements and impedance spectroscopy. The PLED is composed by a thin layer of MEH-PPV sandwiched between indium tin oxide (ITO) and aluminum electrodes, resulting in the device structure ITO/(PANI/Ni-TS-Pc)(n)/MEH-PPV/Al, where n stands for the number of PANI/Ni-TS-Pc bilayers. The deposition of PANI/Ni-TS-Pc leads to a decrease in the driving voltage of the PLEDs, which reaches a minimum when n = 5 bilayers. In addition, impedance spectroscopy data reveal that the PLED impedance decreases as more PANI/Ni-TS-Pc bilayers are deposited. The PLED structure is further described by an equivalent circuit composed by two R-C combinations, one for the bulk and other for the interface components, in series with a resistance originated in the ITO contact. From the impedance curves, the values for each circuit element is determined and it is found that both, bulk and interface resistances are decreased upon PANI/Ni-TS-Pc deposition. The results indicate that PANI/NiTS-Pc films reduce the contact resistance at ITO/MEH-PPV interface, and for that reason improve the hole-injection within the PLED structure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The rat double-SAH model is one of the standard models to simulate delayed cerebral vasospasm (CVS) in humans. However, the proof of delayed ischemic brain damage is missing so far. Our objective was, therefore, to determine histological changes in correlation with the development of symptomatic and perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) proven CVS in this animal model. CVS was induced by injection of autologous blood in the cisterna magna of 22 Sprague-Dawley rats. Histological changes were analyzed on day 3 and day 5. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was assessed by PWI at 3 tesla magnetic resonance (MR) tomography. Neuronal cell count did not differ between sham operated and SAH rats in the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex on day 3. In contrast, on day 5 after SAH the neuronal cell count was significantly reduced in the hippocampus (p<0.001) and the inner cortical layer (p=0.03). The present investigation provides quantitative data on brain tissue damage in association with delayed CVS for the first time in a rat SAH model. Accordingly, our data suggest that the rat double-SAH model may be suitable to mimic delayed ischemic brain damage due to CVS and to investigate the neuroprotective effects of drugs.
