Among the classical operators of mathematical physics the Laplacian plays an important role due to the number of different situations that can be modelled by it. Because of this a great effort has been made by mathematicians as well as by engineers to master its properties till the point that nearly everything has been said about them from a qualitative viewpoint. Quantitative results have also been obtained through the use of the new numerical techniques sustained by the computer. Finite element methods and boundary techniques have been successfully applied to engineering problems as can be seen in the technical literature (for instance [ l ] , [2], [3] . Boundary techniques are especially advantageous in those cases in which the main interest is concentrated on what is happening at the boundary. This situation is very usual in potential problems due to the properties of harmonic functions. In this paper we intend to show how a boundary condition different from the classical, but physically sound, is introduced without any violence in the discretization frame of the Boundary Integral Equation Method. The idea will be developed in the context of heat conduction in axisymmetric problems but it is hoped that its extension to other situations is straightforward. After the presentation of the method several examples will show the capabilities of modelling a physical problem.

The analysis of deformation in soils is of paramount importance in geotechnical engineering. For a long time the complex behaviour of natural deposits defied the ingenuity of engineers. The time has come that, with the aid of computers, numerical methods will allow the solution of every problem if the material law can be specified with a certain accuracy. Boundary Techniques (B.E.) have recently exploded in a splendid flowering of methods and applications that compare advantegeously with other well-established procedures like the finite element method (F.E.). Its application to soil mechanics problems (Brebbia 1981) has started and will grow in the future. This paper tries to present a simple formulation to a classical problem. In fact, there is already a large amount of application of B.E. to diffusion problems (Rizzo et al, Shaw, Chang et al, Combescure et al, Wrobel et al, Roures et al, Onishi et al) and very recently the first specific application to consolidation problems has been published by Bnishi et al. Here we develop an alternative formulation to that presented in the last reference. Fundamentally the idea is to introduce a finite difference discretization in the time domain in order to use the fundamental solution of a Helmholtz type equation governing the neutral pressure distribution. Although this procedure seems to have been unappreciated in the previous technical literature it is nevertheless effective and straightforward to implement. Indeed for the special problem in study it is perfectly suited, because a step by step interaction between the elastic and flow problems is needed. It allows also the introduction of non-linear elastic properties and time dependent conditions very easily as will be shown and compares well with performances of other approaches.

This Thesis presents a methodology for the statistical analysis of pipe breaks in water distribution networks. The methodology studies the relationship between pipe breaks and water pressure, and proposes a pressure management procedure to reduce the number of breaks that occur in such networks. One of the manifestations of the deterioration of water supply systems is frequent pipe breaks. System failures are one of the major challenges faced by water utilities, due to their associated social, economic and environmental costs. For all these reasons, water utilities aim at reducing the problem of break occurrence to as great an extent as possible. Water distribution networks can be divided into areas or sectors, which facilitates the control of the network. These areas may be independent or isolated by valves, as it usually happens in developing countries. Alternatively, they can be hydraulically interconnected. The implementation of pressure management strategies is usually carried out through pressure-reducing valves (PRV). These valves are installed at the head of the sectors and, although the inflow may vary significantly, they control the downstream pressure. The most popular methods of pressure management consist of pressure reduction, which is the common form of control, pressure sustaining, prevention and/or alleviation of pressure surges or large variations in pressure, and level/altitude control. From 2005 onwards, the effects of pressure management on burst frequencies have become more widely recognized in the technical literature. This thesis suggests a pressure management that controls the pressure indicator ranges most influential on the probability of pipe breaks. Operating pressure in a sector is characterized by means of a pressure indicator at the head of the DMA, as head losses are relatively small and topographical differences were accounted for at the design stage. The pressure indicator, which may be defined as the calculated statistic from the time series of pressure head over a specific time window, may provide necessary information to help water utilities to make decisions to reduce pipe breaks in water distribution networks. The first part of the methodology presented in this Thesis provides the pressure indicators which have the greatest impact on the probability of pipe breaks to be determined. In order to know whether a pressure indicator influences the probability of pipe breaks, the proposed methodology compares estimates of cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of a pressure indicator through consideration of two situations: when they are conditioned to the occurrence of a pipe break (a rare event), and when they are not (a normal operation). Water utilities usually have a history of failures limited to recent periods of time, and it is difficult to have access to precise information in an underground network. Therefore, the use of distribution functions to address such imprecision of recorded data is proposed. Cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) derived from the time series of pressure indicators (normal operation) and CDFs of indicator values at times coincident with a reported pipe break (conditioned to breaks) are compared. If all estimated CDFs are drawn from the same population, there is no reason to infer that the studied indicator clearly influences the probability of the rare event. However, when it is statistically proven that the estimated CDFs do not come from the same population, the analysed indicator may have an influence on the occurrence of pipe breaks. Due to the fact that the number of indicator values used to estimate the CDF conditioned to breaks is much lower in comparison with the number of indicator values to estimate the CDF of the unconditional pressure series, and that the obtained results depend on the size of the compared samples, CDFs from random sets of the same size sampled from the unconditional indicator values are estimated. Therefore, the comparison between the estimated CDFs of random sets of the indicator and the estimated CDF conditioned to breaks allows knowledge of if the indicator is influential on the probability of pipe breaks. Pressure indicators depend on various parameters. Sensitivity analysis and a robust statistical test allow determining the indicator for which these parameters result most influential on the probability of pipe breaks. At the same time, indicators can be calculated according to two model parameters, named as the anticipation time and the window width. The anticipation time refers to the time (hours) between the end of the period for the computation of the pressure indicator and the break. The window width is the number of instantaneous pressure values required to calculate the pressure indicator and is multiple of 24 hours, as water pressure has a cyclical behaviour which lasts one day. A sensitivity analysis of the model parameters explains when the pressure indicator is more influential on the probability of pipe breaks. The second part of the methodology presents a Bayesian diagnostic model. This kind of model belongs to the class of statistical predictive models, which are based on historical data, represent break behavior and patterns in water mains, and use the Bayes’ theorem to condition the probability of failure to specific system characteristics. The Bayes’ theorem allows comparing the break-conditioned FDA and the unconditional FDA of the indicators and determining when the probability of pipe breaks increases for certain pressure indicator ranges. A defined probability ratio provides a measure to establish whether the probability of breaks increases for certain ranges of the pressure indicator. The first part of the methodology is applied to the water distribution network of Madrid (Spain) and to the water distribution network of Panama City (Panama). The data filtering method suggests that the methodology can be applied to 15 sectors in Madrid and to two areas in Panama City. The results show that, in both systems, the most influential indicators on the probability of pipe breaks are the pressure range, which is the difference between the maximum pressure and the minimum pressure, and pressure variability, referred to the statistical property of the standard deviation. Therefore, they represent the dispersion of the data, the persistence of the variation in pressure and may be related to the fatigue in material resistance. The second part of the methodology has been applied to the influential indicators on the probability of pipe breaks in the water distribution network of Madrid. The main conclusion is that the probability of pipe breaks increases for the extreme values of the pressure range indicator and of the pressure variability indicator. Finally, a pressure management which limits the ranges of the pressure indicators influential on the probability of pipe breaks that increase such probability is recommended. The methodology presented here is general, may be applied to other water distribution networks, and could help water utilities reduce the number of system failures through pressure management.

Isolated electrical systems lack electrical interconnection to other networks and are usually placed in geographically isolated areas—mainly islands or locations in developing countries. Until recently, only diesel generators were able to assure a safe and reliable supply in exchange for very high costs for fuel transportation and system operation. Transmission system operators (TSOs) are increasingly seeking to replace traditional energy models based on large groups of conventional generation units with mixed solutions where diesel groups are held as backup generation and important advantages are provided by renewable energy sources. The grid codes determine the technical requirements to be fulfilled by the generators connected in any electrical network, but regulations applied to isolated grids are more demanding. In technical literature it is rather easy to find and compare grid codes for interconnected electrical systems. However, the existing literature is incomplete and sparse regarding isolated grids. This paper aims to review the current state of isolated systems and grid codes applicable to them, specifying points of comparison and defining the guidelines to be followed by the upcoming regulations.

Electrical power systems are changing their traditional structure, which was based on a little number of large generating power plants placed at great distances from loads by new models that tend to split the big production nodes in many smaller ones. The set of small groups which are located close to consumers and provide safe and quality energy is called distributed generation (DG). The proximity of the sources to the loads reduces losses associated with transportation and increases overall system efficiency. DG also favors the inclusion of renewable energy sources in isolated electrical systems or remote microgrids, because they can be installed where the natural resource is located. In both cases, as weak grids unable to get help from other nearby networks, it is essential to ensure appropriate behavior of DG sources to guarantee power system safety and stability. The grid codes sets out the technical requirements to be fulfilled for the sources connected in these electrical networks. In technical literature it is rather easy to find and compare grid codes for interconnected electrical systems. However, the existing literature is incomplete and sparse regarding isolated electrical systems and this happens due to the difficulties inherent in the pursuit of codes. Some countries have developed their own legislation only for their island territory (as Spain or France), others apply the same set of rules as in mainland, another group of island countries have elaborated a complete grid code for all generating sources and some others lack specific regulation. This paper aims to make a complete review of the state of the art in grid codes applicable to isolated systems, setting the comparison between them and defining the guidelines predictably followed by the upcoming regulations in these particular systems.

Time of concentration remains still fairly imprecise to engineers. A normal hydrological study goes through several formulae, obtaining concentration time as the median value. Most of the remaining hydrologic results will be derived from this value. Those results will determine how future infrastructures will be designed. This research began with the aim to acquire a more reliable and objective method to estimate concentration times. Given the impossibility of carrying out hydrological tests in a real watershed, due to the difficulties related to accurate monitoring of rainfall and derived outflows, a model-based approach was proposed using bidimensional hydraulic simulations of direct rainfall over a 2D finite-volume mesh. Amongst all of the available software packages, InfoWorks ICM was chosen for its speed and ease of use. As a preliminary phase, the selected hydraulic model was validated, checking the outcomes of several simulations over existing analytical formulae. Next, concentration time values were compared to those resulting from expressions referenced in the technical literature. They proved highly satisfactory. Once the model was properly verified, 690 simulations of both natural and synthetic basins were performed, incorporating variations of area, slope, roughness, intensity and duration of rainfall, in order to obtain their concentration and lag times. This job was carried out in a reasonable time lapse with the aid of the parallel computing platform technology CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture). Performing dimensional analysis, concentration time results were isolated in dimensionless monomials. Afterwards, a new formulation for the time of concentration was obtained using multiple linear regression. This new expression was checked against classical formulations, obtaining equivalent results. The publication of this new methodology intends to further assist the engineer while carrying out hydrological studies. It is effective to provide global parameters that will feed global models as HEC-HMS on a simple and objective way. It has also been proven as a solid alternative to usual hydrology methodology.

It is surprising that the essential role of the backfill at the extrados of masonry vaults and domes has been ignored or misunderstood in the technical literature. The main purpose of this work is to contribute to overcome such a lacuna. Firstly, the morphological configuration of backfill that can be found in the Iberian Peninsula in Roman, Romanesque and Gothic buildings is also presented. Two annexes are devoted to show the collected database and the result of its analysis. Then, the structural role of backfill is characterised, as well as the intrinsic and most significant properties related both to its configuration and structural function. Thus, specific thrust values are proposed to analyse such structures, taking into account the nature and boundary conditions of walls and vaults. The simple, powerful and sufficient tool of analysis that has been developed is also presented, including the main variables involved, especially the backfill. The limit analysis method, followed by a stress verification, including the extrados of vaults and backfill interface, and an enhanced algorithm based on energetic considerations, are used to provide technicians a tool to understand this type of structures efficiently, in a balanced situation between the rather scarce amount of information and sufficient accuracy and liability. The tool was calibrated by comparing the experimental and theoretical results provided by different authors regarding several examples, as well as our own experimental campaign carried out at the Civil Engineering School of Madrid. A parametric study is also developed, providing original information about the structural importance of several parameters, as the span-to-depth or span-to-rise ratios, relative height of backfill, etc. As a result of this analysis, critical points and tendencies of structural behaviour were detected, helping technicians to inspect and analyse these constructions, also revealing some particularities related to their construction. Furthermore, a set of three examples corresponding to the three structural typologies analysed (Roman, Romanesque and Gothic) is studied. The crucial importance of backfill is then highlighted, not only for the stability of vaults or domes, but also for the equilibrium of walls, pillars and buttresses. Finally, the conclusions of the study and the future research fields are also presented.

The waste of plastic beverage bottles creates environmental problems and takes up a large volume of landfill space. The high rate of consumption of plastics in the State of Florida is challenging the disposal capacity of waste authorities. The lack of the reverse vending machines in the State of Florida, including applicable scientific or technical literature represented an opportunity for this research to discuss the applicability of this equipment as a potential solution for the management of the plastic waste in Florida. With this research document, I will propose a recycling system for plastic bottles made with PET based on the implementation of reverse vending machines, stressing the importance of the creation of policies that promote recycling and public participation.

In the past 10 years, the use of floating breakwaters as temporary coastal structures has become increasingly widespread in the United States as an inexpensive means for suppressing waves. However, as with any new technology, there have been many failures and a substantial number of imaginative, successful innovations. One of the chief problems contributing to the failure rate has been a lack of awareness by designers of reliable, up-to-date technical information. As part of a large research effort to remedy this problem, a survey was conducted on field experience with floating breakwaters in the Eastern United States. Results of the survey confirmed that state-of-the-art technical literature is not being properly disseminated. Structures built according to early design manuals were shown to have failed before the completion of their design life. Conversely, floating breakwaters built to the standards set by recent research have fared well and show promise of meeting their design golas. The weakest areas of the present technology are flotation and the anchoring systems. It is recommended that a concentrated research effort be directed toward these problem areas; it is also recommended that the monitoring of state-of-the-art projects continue. (Author).
