The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of low soil moisture on the efficacy of applying herbicides ametryn + clomazone, sulfentrazone and tebuthiuron in pre-emergence application submitted to simulated rainfalls at different time intervals after application in control of B. pilosa, C. echinatus and U. plantaginea plants. The experiment was carried out in pots with a capacity of 2.5 L in green-house conditions and experimental design was completely randomized with four replications, arranged in a 3x5 factorial (three herbicides and five rains intervals). The herbicides clomazone + ametryn (Sinerge EC) 5.0 L commercial product (cp) ha(-1), sulfentrazone (Boral 500 SC) 1.2 L cp ha(-1) and tebuthiuron (combine SC) 2.0 L cp ha(-1) were applied in pre-emergence and the precipitation of 20 mm were applied under de pots in five time intervals after the herbicide application (0h, 4h, 8h, 12h and 24hours). Visual evaluations of plants control that emerged plants were realized at 14 and 21 days after treatment application and the plant emergence percentage was calculated. The application of these three herbicides in dry soil then rain within 24 hours after application provided C. echinatus plants emergence, reduced B. pilosa emergency but in the end of the experiment effectively controlled these two species and U. plantaginea plants.

In 2001, it was estimated that pesticide used worldwide exceeded 2.27 billion kilograms, over 35%, of which, were herbicides. Brazil is considered one of the leaders in the production of sugarcane and mainly ethanol as fuel. The monoculture of sugarcane requires the usage of a range of pesticides, among these, the herbicides diuron and tebuthiuron. The degradation products most studied (DCA and DCPU) are diuron's, especially for toxicological characteristics of this herbicide that is identified as carcinogen and suspected to be endocrine disruptor in mammals. After optimization of the chromatographic separation using HPLC-UV, the analytical curve was constructed in solvent and subsequently in the matrix (surface water). The extraction method contains the usage of SPE (solid phase extraction) (Strata-X, 200 mg/6 mL), applicating 1L of sample and elution with 5 mL of acetonitrile / methanol (50:50, v/v). Analysis by HPLC/UV was performed in gradient mode, acetonitrile/water (70/30-74/26 by 1 min, 74/26 - 78/22 till 3.2 min, returning to initial conditions and remaining this way until 10 min), 018 column (Phenomenex, 4.6 mm diameter, 250 mm long and 5pm particle size) and detection at 254 nm. Tests F and t were performed to verify the presence of the matrix effect. There was matrix effect to all analytes, ranging from -33% (DCA) and 38% (tebuthiuron). Thereby the method was optimized and validated for analysis of diuron, tebuthiuron, and DCPU DCA in surface water using HPLC/UV. The data obtained show that in order to assure the analytical reliability desired the use of the analytical curves in the matrix for the quantification of these analytes in water is required.

Tebuthiuron (TBH) is a herbicide widely used in different cultures and known for its toxic effects. Electrochemical methods are promising for removing pollutants such as pesticides. This study showed the degradation of TBH using a DSA® anode operated at current densities of 50 to 200 mA cm-2. Removal presented pseudo-first order kinetics while high-pressure liquid chromatography (UV detection) showed two peaks, ascribed to degradation intermediates. The maximum percentage of total organic carbon removed was 12.9%. Ion chromatography revealed that higher concentrations of nitrate and nitrite ions formed with increasing current density.

Recent reports of contamination of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park by herbicides used in antifouling paints and in agriculture have caused concern over the possible effects on corals in nearshore areas. Pulse-Amplitude Modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence techniques were used to examine changes in the maximum effective quantum yield (ΔF/Fm′) of symbiotic dinoflagellates within the host tissues (in hospite) of the coral Seriatopora hystrix exposed to a number of Photosystem II (PSII) inhibiting herbicides in short-term toxicity tests. The concentration of herbicide required to reduce ΔF/Fm′ by 50% (median effective concentration [EC50]) differed by over 2 orders of magnitude: Irgarol 1051 (0.7 μg l-1) > ametryn (1.7 μg l-1) > diuron (2.3 μg l-1) > hexazinone (8.8 μg l -1) > atrazine (45 μg l-1) > simazine (150 μg l-1) > tebuthiuron (175 μg l-1) > ionynil (> 1 mg l-1). Similar absolute and relative toxicities were observed with colonies of the coral Acropora formosa (Irgarol 1051 EC50: 1.3 μg l-1, diuron EC50: 2.8 μg l-1), Time-course experiments indicated that ΔF/Fm′ was rapidly reduced (i.e. within minutes) in S. hystrix exposed to Irgarol 1051 and diuron. On return to fresh running seawater, ΔF/Fm′ recovered quickly in diuron-exposed corals (i.e. in minutes to hours), but slowly in corals exposed to Irgarol 1051 (i.e. hours to days). Time-course experiments indicated that the effects of diuron (3 μg l-1) on S. hystrix were inversely related to temperature over the range 20 to 30 °C, although initially the effects were less at the lower temperatures. Repeated exposure to pulses of Irgarol 1051 (daily 2 h exposure to 30 μg l -1 over 4 d) resulted in a 30% decrease in the density of symbiotic dinoflagellates in the tissues of S. hystrix.

he region of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State, Brazil, is located over recharge area of the Guarany aquifer, the most important source of groundwater in the South Central region of the country. This region is also the most important sugarcane producing area of the country which produces a large amount of the ethanol. This study was conducted to determine the potential risk of herbicide groundwater contamination. The leaching risk potential of herbicides to groundwater was conducted using the weather simulator ?Weather Generator? (WGEN) coupled with the model ?Chemical Movement Trough Layered Soils? (CMLS94). The following herbicides were evaluated in clayey and sandy soils (Typic Haplorthox and Typic Quartzipsamment soils) found in the region: ametryn (N-ethyl-N\'-(1- methylethyl)-6-(methylthio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N\'-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine- 2,4-diamine), clomazone (2-[(2-chlorophenyl)methyl]-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone), diuron (3,4-dichlorophenyl)- N,N-dimethylurea), halosulfuron (3-chloro-5-[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl], hexazinone (3- cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4 (1H,3H)-dione), imazapic ((±)-2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4- (1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-5-methyl-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid), imazapyr ((±)-2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl- 4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid), MCPA (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid), metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one), MSMA (Amonosodium salt of MAA), paraquat (1,1\'-dimethyl-4,4\'-bipyridinium ion), pendimethalin (N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6- dinitrobenzenamine), picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid), simazine (6-chloro-N,N\'-diethyl- 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), sulfentrazone [N-[2,4-dichloro-5-[4-(difluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-5-oxo-1H- 1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]phenyl]methanesulfonamide], and tebuthiuron [N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N\'- dimethylurea]. Results obtained by our simulation study have shown that the herbicides picloram, tebuthiuron, and metribuzin have the highest leaching potential, in either sandy or clayey soils, with picloram reaching the root zone of sugarcane at 0.6m in less than 150 days.
