Er3+ doped multicomponent fluoride based glass was prepared. These precursor fluoride glass samples were then heated using different schedules. Crystalline phase particles were successfully precipitated in the multicomponent fluoride glass samples after heat treatment. The influence of heat treatment on the spectroscopic properties of Er3+ in multicomponent fluoride based glass samples were discussed. Small changes of the Judd-Ofelt parameters Omega(i) (i = 2,4,6) were found in multicomponent fluoride glass samples before and after heat treatment compared to oxyfluoride telluride glass. Preparation conditions used to produce transparent multicomponent fluoride glass ceramics doped with rare-earth ions are discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Transparent glass ceramics have been obtained by nucleation and growth of Y2Te6O15 or Er2Te5O13 cubic phase in a new Er3+-doped oxyfluoride tellurite glass. Effect of beat treatment on absorption spectra, luminescence and up-conversion properties in the oxyfluoride tellurite glass has been investigated. With heat treatment the ultraviolet absorption edge red shifted evidently for the oxyfluoride telluride glass. The near infrared emission that corresponds to Er3+:I-4(13/2)-> I-4(15/2) can be significantly enhanced after heat treatment. Under 980 nm LD pumping, red and green up-conversion intensity of Er3+ in the glass ceramic can be observed much stronger than that in the base glass. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of F- ions on physical and spectroscopic properties of the Yb3+ in tellurite glass system are investigated. The results show that the glass system takes on good thermal stability with the content of ZnF2 lower than 15 mol%, both the emission cross-section and the fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions increase evidently which indicate that such oxyfluoride tellurite glass system is a promising laser host matrix for high power generation. FT-IR spectra were used to analyze the effect of F- ions on the structure of tellurite glasses and OH- groups in this glass system. Analysis demonstrates that addition of fluoride decreases the symmetry of the structure of tellurite glasses which increases the emission cross-section and removes the OH- groups, and which improves the measured fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions. The electronic structure and electron g factors of HgTe quantum dots are investigated, in the framework of the eight-band effective-mass approximation. It is found that the electron states of quantum spheres have aspheric properties due to the interaction between the conduction band and valence band. The highest hole states are S (l = 0) states, when the radius is smaller than 9.4 nm. the same as the lowest electron states. Thus strong luminescence from H-Te quantum dots with radius smaller than 9.4 nm has been observed (Rogach et al 2001 Phys. Statits Solidi b 224 153). The bandgap of H-Te quantum spheres is calculated and compared with earlier experimental results (Harrison et al 2000 Pure Appl. Chem. 72 295). Due to the quantum confinement effect, the bandgap of the small HgTe quantum spheres is positive. The electron g factors of HgTe quantum spheres decrease with increasing radius and are nearly 2 when the radius is very small. The electron g factors of HgTe quantum ellipsoids are also investigated. We found that as some of the three dimensions increase, the electron g factors decrease. The more the dimensions increase, the more the g factors decrease. The dimensions perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field affect the g factors more than the other dimension.

Polycrystalline nanotubular Bi2Te3 could be prepared via a high-temperature solution process using nanoscale tellurium, decomposed from trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) extracted tellurium species (Te-TOPO), as sacrificial template. The formation of such tubular structure is believed to be the result of outward diffusion of Te during the alloying process. The electrical properties (Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity) of the polycrystalline nanotubular Bi2Te3 have been studied and the experimental results show that the electrical conductivity is approximately three orders of magnitude smaller than bulk bismuth telluride materials mainly due to the much larger resistance brought by the insufficient contact between the nanotubular structures.

Microcrystalline indium(III) selenide was prepared from a diphenyl diselenide precursor and a range of chloroindate(III) ionic liquids via a microwave-assisted ionothermal route; this is the first report on the use of either microwave irradiation or ionic liquids to prepare this material. The influence of the reaction temperature, dilution with a spectator ionic liquid and variation of the cation and the anion of the ionic liquid on the product morphology and composition were investigated. This resulted in a time-efficient and facile one-pot reaction to produce microcrystalline indium(III) selenide. The product formation in the ionic liquids has been monitored using Raman spectroscopy. The products have been characterised using PXRD, SEM and EDX. Advantages of this new route, such as the ease of solubilisation of all reactants into one phase at high concentration, the negligible vapour pressure irrespective of the reaction temperature, very fast reaction times, ease of potential scale-up and reproducibility are discussed.

The far infrared reflectance of Sb2Te3 , Sbi.97Vo.o3Te3 and Sbi.94Cr .o6Te3 was measured near normal incidence at different temperatures (between 45K and 300K). The direct current resistivities of the above samples were also measured between the temperatures of 4K and 300K. Also Kramers Kronig (KK) analyses were performed on the reflectance spectra to obtain the optical conductivities. In the doped samples, it was observed that a phonon at 62cm-1 softens to about 55cm-1 on decreasing the temperature from 295K to 45K. Also, it was observed that the plasma frequency of the doped samples is independent of doping. The scattering rate for the vanadium doped sample was seen to be greater than that for the chromium doped sample despite the fact that vanadium impurity density is less than that of chromium. The Drude-Lorentz model fits to the KK optical conductivity show that the samples used in this work are conventional metals. Definitive measurements of the temperature dependence of the scattering rate across the ferromagnetic transition await equipment changes allowing measurements at low temperature using the mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector.

Coatings and filters for spaceflight far-infrared components require a robust, non-absorptive low-index thin film material to contrast with the typically higher refractive index infrared materials. Barium fluoride is one such material for the 10 to 20µm wavelength infrared region, however its optical and mechanical properties vary depending on the process used to deposit it in thin film form. Thin films of dielectric produced by thermal evaporation are well documented as having a lower packing density and refractive index than bulk material. The porous and columnar micro structure of these films causes possible deterioration of their performance in varied environmental conditions, primarily because of the moisture absorption. Dielectric thin films produced by the more novel technique of ion-beam sputtering are denser with no columnar micro structure and have a packing density and refractive index similar to the bulk material. A comparative study of Barium Fluoride (BaF2) thin films made by conventional thermal evaporation and ion-beam sputtering is reported. Films of similar thicknesses are deposited on Cadmium Telluride and Germanium substrates. The optical and mechanical properties of these films are then examined. The refractive index n of the films is obtained from applying the modified Manifacier's evvelope method to the spectral measurements made on a Perkin Elmer 580 spectrophotometer. An estimate is also made of the value of the extinction coefficient k in the infrared wavelength transparent region of the thin film. In order to study the mechanical properties of the BaF2 films, and evaluate their usefulness in spaceflight infrared filters and coatings, the thin film samples are subjected to MIL-F-48616 environmental tests. Comparisons are made of their performance under these tests.

A synthesis method is outlined for the design of broadband anti-reflection coatings for use in spaceborne infrared optics. The Golden Section optimisation routine is used to make a search, using designated non-absorptive dielectric thin film combinations, for the coating design which fulfils the required spectral requirements using the least number of layers and different materials. Three examples are given of coatings designed by this method : (I) 1µm to 12µm anti-reflection coating on Zinc Sulphide using Zinc Sulphide and Yttrium Fluoride thin film materials. (ii) 2µm to 14µm anti-reflection coating on Germanium using Germanium and Ytterbium Fluoride thin film materials. (iii) 6µm to 17µm anti-reflection coating on Germanium using Lead Telluride, Zinc Selenide and Barium Fluoride. The measured spectral performance of the manufactured 6µm to 17µm coating on Germanium is given. This is the anti-reflection coating for the germanium optics in the NASA Cassini Orbiter CIRS instrument.

The introduction of non-toxic fluride compounds as direct replacements for Thorium Fluoride (ThF4) has renewed interest in the use of low index fluoride compounds in high performance infrared filters. This paper reports the results of an investigation into the effects of combining these low index materials, particularly Barium Fluoride (BaF2), with the high index material Lead Telluride (PbTe) in bandpass and edge filters. Infrared filter designs using conventional and the new material ombination are compared, and infrared filters using these material combinations have been manufactured and have been shown to suffer problems with residual stress. A possible solution to this problem utilising Zinc Sulphide (ZnS) layers with compensating compressive stress is discussed.
