Self-control strength may affect state anxiety because emotion regulation is impaired in individuals whose self-control strength has been temporarily depleted. Increases in state anxiety were expected to be larger for participants with depleted compared to nondepleted self-control strength, and trait test anxiety should predict increases in state anxiety more strongly if self-control strength is depleted. In a sample of 76 university students, trait test anxiety was assessed, self-control strength experimentally manipulated, and state anxiety measured before and after the announcement of a test. State anxiety increased after the announcement. Trait test anxiety predicted increases in state anxiety only in students with depleted self-control strength, suggesting that increased self-control strength may be useful for coping with anxiety.

The leaching of N fertilisers has led to the formation of nitrate (NO3) accumulations in deep subsoils (>5 m depth) of the Johnstone River catchment. This paper outlines the chemical mechanism by which these NO3 accumulations are formed and maintained. This was achieved via a series of column experiments designed to investigate NO3 leaching in relation to the soil charge chemistry and the competition of anions for exchange sites. The presence of variable charge minerals has led to the formation positive surface charge within these profiles. An increase in the soil solution ionic strength accompanying the fertiliser leaching front acts to increase the positive (and negative) charge density, thus providing adsorption sites for NO3. A decrease in the soil solution ionic strength occurs after the fertiliser pulse moves past a point in the profile, due to dilution with incoming rainwater. Nitrate is then released from the exchange back into the soil solution, thus buffering the decrease in the soil solution ionic strength. Since NO3 was adsorbed throughout the profile in this experiment it does not effectively explain the situation occurring in the field. Previous observations of the sulfate (SO4) profile distribution indicated that large SO4 accumulations in the upper profile may influence the NO3 distribution through competition for adsorption sites. A subsequent experiment investigating the effect of SO4 additions on NO3 leaching showed that NO3 adsorption was minimal in the upper profile. Adsorption of NO3 did occur, though only in the region of the profile where SO4 occupancy was low, i.e. in the lower profile. Therefore, the formation of the NO3 accumulations is dependent on the variable charge mineralogy, the variation of charge density with soil solution ionic strength, and the effects of SO4 competition for adsorption sites.

Purpose: In the present study, we consider mechanical properties of phosphate glasses under high temperatureinduced and under friction-induced cross-linking, which enhance the modulus of elasticity. Design/methodology/approach: Two nanomechanical properties are evaluated, the first parameter is the modulus of elasticity (E) (or Young's modulus) and the second parameter is the hardness (H). Zinc meta-, pyro - and orthophosphates were recognized as amorphous-colloidal nanoparticles were synthesized under laboratory conditions and showed antiwear properties in engine oil. Findings: Young's modulus of the phosphate glasses formed under high temperature was in the 60-89 GPa range. For phosphate tribofilm formed under friction hardness and the Young's modulus were in the range of 2-10 GPa and 40-215 GPa, respectively. The degree of cross-linking during friction is provided by internal pressure of about 600 MPa and temperature close to 1000°C enhancing mechanical properties by factor of 3 (see Fig 1). Research limitations/implications: The addition of iron or aluminum ions to phosphate glasses under high temperature - and friction-induced amorphization of zinc metaphosphate and pyrophosphate tends to provide more cross-linking and mechanically stronger structures. Iron and aluminum (FeO4 or AlO4 units), incorporated into phosphate structure as network formers, contribute to the anion network bonding by converting the P=O bonds into bridging oxygen. Future work should consider on development of new of materials prepared by solgel processes, eg., zinc (II)-silicic acid. Originality/value: This paper analyses the friction pressure-induced and temperature–induced the two factors lead phosphate tribofilm glasses to chemically advanced glass structures, which may enhance the wear inhibition. Adding the coordinating ions alters the pressure at which cross-linking occurs and increases the antiwear properties of the surface material significantly.

In the previous research CRC CI 2001-010-C “Investment Decision Framework for Infrastructure Asset Management”, a method for assessing variation in cost estimates for road maintenance and rehabilitation was developed. The variability of pavement strength collected from a 92km national highway was used in the analysis to demonstrate the concept. Further analysis was conducted to identify critical input parameters that significantly affect the prediction of road deterioration. In addition to pavement strength, rut depth, annual traffic loading and initial roughness were found to be critical input parameters for road deterioration. This report presents a method developed to incorporate other critical parameters in the analysis, such as unit costs, which are suspected to contribute to a certain degree to cost estimate variation. Thus, the variability of unit costs will be incorporated in this analysis. Bruce Highway located in the tropical east coast of Queensland has been identified to be the network for the analysis. This report presents a step by step methodology for assessing variation in road maintenance and rehabilitation cost estimates.
