Objective: To evaluate the performance of All Bond SE used in a one- or two-step protocol in a 24-month randomized clinical study. Methods: Thirty-three patients with two similarly sized non-carious cervical lesions participated in this study. A total of 66 restorations were placed, half using the one-step All Bond SE protocol (SE-1) and the other half using the two-step All Bond SE protocol (SE-2). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 6, 12 and 24 months following the modified USPHS criteria and analyzed by the McNemar`s test and Fisher`s exact test (alpha=0.05). Results: After 24 months, six SE-1 and four SE-2 restorations were rated as Bravo in marginal discoloration The retention rates for SE-1 and SE-2 were 84.8% and 90.9%, respectively, after 24 months. Compared to baseline, the retention rate for SE-1 was statistically lower. Conclusions: All Bond SE used in the one- or two-step protocol resulted in high retention rates after 24 months.

The initial step in viral infection is the attachment of the virus to the host cell via an interaction with its receptor. We have previously shown that a receptor for human papillomavirus is the alpha6 integrin. The alpha6 integrin is involved in the attachment of epithelial cells with the basement membrane, but recent evidence suggests that ligation of many integrins results in intracellular signaling events that influence cell proliferation. sere we present evidence that exposure of A431 human epithelial cells to human papillomavirus type 6b L1 virus-like particles (VLPs) results in a dose-dependent increase in cell proliferation, as measured by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation. This proliferation is Lost if VLPs are first denatured or incubated with a monoclonal antibody against L1 protein. The MEK1 inhibitor PB98059 inhibits the VLP-mediated increase in fell proliferation, suggesting involvement of the Ras-MAP kinase pathway, Indeed, VLP binding results in rapid phosphorylation of the beta4 integrin upon tyrosine residues and subsequent recruitment of the adapter protein She to beta4, Within 30 min, the activation of Ras, Raf, and Erk2 was observed. Finally, the upregulation of c-myc mRNA was observed at 60 min, These data indicate that human papillomavirus type 6b is able to signal cells via the Ras-MAP kinase pathway to induce cell proliferation. We hypothesize that such a mechanism would allow papillomaviruses to infect hosts more successfully by increasing the potential pool of cells they are able to infect via the initiation of proliferation in resting keratinocyte stem and suprabasal cells.

The step size determines the accuracy of a discrete element simulation. The position and velocity updating calculation uses a pre-calculated table and hence the control of step size can not use the integration formulas for step size control. A step size control scheme for use with the table driven velocity and position calculation uses the difference between the calculation result from one big step and that from two small steps. This variable time step size method chooses the suitable time step size for each particle at each step automatically according to the conditions. Simulation using fixed time step method is compared with that of using variable time step method. The difference in computation time for the same accuracy using a variable step size (compared to the fixed step) depends on the particular problem. For a simple test case the times are roughly similar. However, the variable step size gives the required accuracy on the first run. A fixed step size may require several runs to check the simulation accuracy or a conservative step size that results in longer run times. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Malondialdehyde and acetaldehyde react together with proteins and form hybrid protein conjugates designated as MAA adducts, which have been detected in livers of ethanol-fed animals. Our previous studies have shown that MAA adducts are comprised of two distinct products. One adduct is composed of two molecules of malondialdehyde and one molecule of acetaldehyde and was identified as the 4-methpl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarbaldehyde derivative of an amino group (MHHDC adduct). The other adduct is a 1:1 adduct of malondialdehyde and acetaldehyde and was identified as the 2-formyl-3-(alkylamino)butanal derivative of an amino group (FAAB adduct). In this study, information on the mechanism of MAA adduct formation was obtained, focusing on whether the FAAB adduct serves as a precursor for the MDHDC adduct. Upon the basis of chemical analysis and NMR spectroscopy, two initial reaction steps appear to be a prerequisite for MDHDC formation. One step involves the reaction of one molecule of malondialdehyde and one of acetaldehyde with an amino group of a protein to form the FAAB product, while the other step involves the generation of a malondialdehyde-enamine. It appears that generation of the MDHDC adduct requires the FAAB moiety to be transferred to the nitrogen of the MDA-enamine. For efficient reaction of FAAB with the enamine to take place, additional experiments indicated that these two intermediates likely must be in positions on the protein of close proximity to each other. Further studies showed that the incubation of liver proteins from ethanol-fed rats with MDA resulted in a marked generation of MDHDC adducts, indicating the presence of a pool of FAAB adducts in the liver of ethanol-fed animals. Overall, these findings show that MDHDC-protein adduct formation occurs via the reaction of the FAAB moiety with a malondialdehyde-enamine, and further suggest that a similar mechanism may be operative in vivo in the liver during prolonged ethanol consumption.

Reaction between 5-(4-amino-2-thiabutyl)-5-methyl-3,7-dithianonane-1, 9-diamine (N3S3) and 5- methyl-2,2-bipyridine-5-carbaldehyde and subsequent reduction of the resulting imine with sodium borohydride results in a potentially ditopic ligand (L). Treatment of L with one equivalent of an iron( II) salt led to the monoprotonated complex [Fe(HL)](3+), isolated as the hexafluorophosphate salt. The presence of characteristic bands for the tris( bipyridyl) iron( II) chromophore in the UV/vis spectrum indicated that the iron( II) atom is coordinated octahedrally by the three bipyridyl (bipy) groups. The [Fe( bipy) 3] moiety encloses a cavity composed of the N3S3 portion of the ditopic ligand. The mononuclear and monomeric nature of the complex [Fe(HL)](3+) has been established also by accurate mass analysis. [Fe(HL)](3+) displays reduced stability to base compared with the complex [Fe(bipy)(3)](2+). In aqueous solution [Fe(HL)](3+) exhibits irreversible electrochemical behaviour with an oxidation wave ca. 60 mV to more positive potential than [Fe(bipy)(3)](2+). Investigations of the interaction of [Fe(L)](2+) with copper( II), iron( II), and mercury( II) using mass spectroscopic and potentiometric methods suggested that where complexation occurred, fewer than six of the N3S3 cavity donors were involved. The high affinity of the complex [Fe(L)](2+) for protons is one reason suggested to contribute to the reluctance to coordinate a second metal ion.

High quality MSS membranes were synthesised by a single-step and two-step catalysed hydrolyses employing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), absolute ethanol (EtOH), I M nitric acid (HNO3) and distilled water (H2O). The Si-29 NMR results showed that the two-step xerogels consistently had more contribution of silanol groups (Q(3) and Q(2)) than the single-step xerogel. According to the fractal theory, high contribution of Q(2) and Q(3) species are responsible for the formation of weakly branched systems leading to low pore volume of microporous dimension. The transport of diffusing gases in these membranes is shown to be activated as the permeance increased with temperature. Albeit the permeance of He for both single-step and two-step membranes are very similar, the two-step membranes permselectivity (ideal separation factor) for He/CO2 (69-319) and He/CH4 (585-958) are one to two orders of magnitude higher than the single-step membranes results of 2-7 and 69, respectively. The two-step membranes have high activation energy for He and H-2 permeance, in excess of 16 kJ mol(-1). The mobility energy for He permeance is three to six-fold higher for the two-step than the single-step membranes. As the mobility energy is higher for small pores than large pores and coupled with the permselectivity results, the two-step catalysed hydrolysis sol-gel process resulted in the formation of pore sizes in the region of 3 Angstrom while the single-step process tended to produce slightly larger pores. Heat transfer levels have been investigated behind a rearward-facing step in a superorbital expansion tube. The heat transfer was measured along a flat plate and behind 2 and 3mm steps with the same length to step height ratio. Results were obtained with air as the test gas at speeds of 6.76kms(-1) and 9-60kms(-1) corresponding to stagnation enthalpies of 26MJ/kg and 48MJ/kg respectively. A laminar boundary layer was established on the flat plate and measured heat transfer levels were consistent with classical empirical correlations. In the case of flow behind a step, the measurements showed a gradual rise in heat transfer from the rear of the step to a plateau several step heights downstream for both flow conditions. Reattachment distance was estimated to be approximately 1.6 step heights downstream of the 2mm step at the low enthalpy condition through the use of flow visualisation.

This paper aims to evaluate the social impacts of the Tourism Development Program (Prodetur) in the northeastern town of Porto Seguro, Bahia, Brazil. The method used is based on the difference in difference technique applied to the 1991 and 2000 Census microdata. The results suggest social advances following from poverty relief based on income - where the benefits are distributed, generally, in a relatively equal manner between the native and migrant population. There is a relative deterioration in the sanitary situation, which consists of a very serious problem in the mid- and long-term, whose costs are mostly borne by the native population. Therefore, maintaining the natural capital is the main aspect that distances Porto Seguros tourism supply from the concept of sustainability. The article also relies on difference in difference estimators to assess the impacts of local public policies related to the sector.
