Online geographic information systems provide the means to extract a subset of desired spatial information from a larger remote repository. Data retrieved representing real-world geographic phenomena are then manipulated to suit the specific needs of an end-user. Often this extraction requires the derivation of representations of objects specific to a particular resolution or scale from a single original stored version. Currently standard spatial data handling techniques cannot support the multi-resolution representation of such features in a database. In this paper a methodology to store and retrieve versions of spatial objects at, different resolutions with respect to scale using standard database primitives and SQL is presented. The technique involves heavy fragmentation of spatial features that allows dynamic simplification into scale-specific object representations customised to the display resolution of the end-user's device. Experimental results comparing the new approach to traditional R-Tree indexing and external object simplification reveal the former performs notably better for mobile and WWW applications where client-side resources are limited and retrieved data loads are kept relatively small.

The paper presents a computational system based upon formal principles to run spatial models for environmental processes. The simulator is named SimuMap because it is typically used to simulate spatial processes over a mapped representation of terrain. A model is formally represented in SimuMap as a set of coupled sub-models. The paper considers the situation where spatial processes operate at different time levels, but are still integrated. An example of such a situation commonly occurs in watershed hydrology where overland flow and stream channel flow have very different flow rates but are highly related as they are subject to the same terrain runoff processes. SimuMap is able to run a network of sub-models that express different time-space derivatives for water flow processes. Sub-models may be coded generically with a map algebra programming language that uses a surface data model. To address the problem of differing time levels in simulation, the paper: (i) reviews general approaches for numerical solvers, (ii) considers the constraints that need to be enforced to use more adaptive time steps in discrete time specified simulations, and (iii) scaling transfer rates in equations that use different time bases for time-space derivatives. A multistep scheme is proposed for SimuMap. This is presented along with a description of its visual programming interface, its modelling formalisms and future plans. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. The design of an X-band tray-type spatial power combiner, which employs uniplanar quasi-Yagi antennas (QYAs) for receiving and transmitting signals by individual amplifiers, is presented. Passive and active varieties of a seven-tray power-combining structure that includes two hard horns for uniform signal launching and combining across the tray stack are developed and measured. In order to compensate for nonuniform phase across the stack, which is caused by the nonplanar wave front of the horn antennas, Schiffman phase shifters are implemented in individual trays. The experimental-results show an improved performance of the investigated tray-type power combiner when the proposed phase-error compensation is implemented. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

An anaerobic landfill leachate bioreactor was operated with crystalline cellulose and sterile landfill leacbate until a steady state was reached. Cellulose hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis were measured. Microorganisms attached to the cellulose surfaces were hypothesized to be the cellulose hydrolyzers. 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were prepared from this attached fraction and also from the mixed fraction (biomass associated with cellulose particles and in the planktonic phase). Both clone libraries were dominated by Firmicutes phylum sequences (100% of the attached library and 90% of the mixed library), and the majority fell into one of five lineages of the clostridia. Clone group 1 (most closely related to Clostridium stercorarium), clone group 2 (most closely related to Clostridium thermocellum), and clone group 5 (most closely related to Bacteroides cellulosolvens) comprised sequences in Clostridium group III. Clone group 3 sequences were in Clostridium group XIVa (most closely related to Clostridium sp. strain XB90). Clone group 4 sequences were affiliated with a deeply branching clostridial lineage peripherally associated with Clostridium group VI. This monophyletic group comprises a new Clostridium cluster, designated cluster VIa. Specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) probes for the five groups were designed and synthesized, and it was demonstrated in FISH experiments that bacteria targeted by the probes for clone groups 1, 2, 4, and 5 were very abundant on the surfaces of the cellulose particles and likely the key cellulolytic microorganisms in the landfill bioreactor. The FISH probe for clone group 3 targeted cells in the planktonic phase, and these organisms were hypothesized to be glucose fermenters.

Stem cells, either from embryonic or adult sources, have demonstrated the potential to differentiate into a wide range of tissues depending on culture conditions. This makes them prime candidates for use in tissue engineering applications. Current technology allows us to process biocompatible and biodegradable polymers into three-dimensional (3D) configurations, either as solid porous scaffolds or hydrogels, with controlled macro and/or micro spatial geometry and surface chemistry. Such control provides us with the ability to present highly controlled microenvironments to a chosen cell type. However, the precise microenvironments required for optimal expansion and/or differentiation of stem cells are only now being elucidated, and hence the controlled use of stem cells in tissue engineering remains a very young field. We present here a brief review of the current literature detailing interactions between stem cells and 3D scaffolds of varying morphology and chemical properties, concluding with remaining challenges for those interested in tissue engineering using tailored scaffolds and stem cells.

This paper presents a rectangular array antenna with a suitable signal-processing algorithm that is able to steer the beam in azimuth over a wide frequency band. In the previous approach, which was reported in the literature, an inverse discrete Fourier transform technique was proposed for obtaining the signal weighting coefficients. This approach was demonstrated for large arrays in which the physical parameters of the antenna elements were not considered. In this paper, a modified signal-weighting algorithm that works for arbitrary-size arrays is described. Its validity is demonstrated in examples of moderate-size arrays with real antenna elements. It is shown that in some cases, the original beam-forming algorithm fails, while the new algorithm is able to form the desired radiation pattern over a wide frequency band. The performance of the new algorithm is assessed for two cases when the mutual coupling between array elements is both neglected and taken into account.

Summarizing topological relations is fundamental to many spatial applications including spatial query optimization. In this article, we present several novel techniques to effectively construct cell density based spatial histograms for range (window) summarizations restricted to the four most important level-two topological relations: contains, contained, overlap, and disjoint. We first present a novel framework to construct a multiscale Euler histogram in 2D space with the guarantee of the exact summarization results for aligned windows in constant time. To minimize the storage space in such a multiscale Euler histogram, an approximate algorithm with the approximate ratio 19/12 is presented, while the problem is shown NP-hard generally. To conform to a limited storage space where a multiscale histogram may be allowed to have only k Euler histograms, an effective algorithm is presented to construct multiscale histograms to achieve high accuracy in approximately summarizing aligned windows. Then, we present a new approximate algorithm to query an Euler histogram that cannot guarantee the exact answers; it runs in constant time. We also investigate the problem of nonaligned windows and the problem of effectively partitioning the data space to support nonaligned window queries. Finally, we extend our techniques to 3D space. Our extensive experiments against both synthetic and real world datasets demonstrate that the approximate multiscale histogram techniques may improve the accuracy of the existing techniques by several orders of magnitude while retaining the cost efficiency, and the exact multiscale histogram technique requires only a storage space linearly proportional to the number of cells for many popular real datasets.

Edge detection is crucial in visual processing. Previous computational and psychophysical models have often used peaks in the gradient or zero-crossings in the 2nd derivative to signal edges. We tested these approaches using a stimulus that has no such features. Its luminance profile was a triangle wave, blurred by a rectangular function. Subjects marked the position and polarity of perceived edges. For all blur widths tested, observers marked edges at or near 3rd derivative maxima, even though these were not 1st derivative maxima or 2nd derivative zero-crossings, at any scale. These results are predicted by a new nonlinear model based on 3rd derivative filtering. As a critical test, we added a ramp of variable slope to the blurred triangle-wave luminance profile. The ramp has no effect on the (linear) 2nd or higher derivatives, but the nonlinear model predicts a shift from seeing two edges to seeing one edge as the ramp gradient increases. Results of two experiments confirmed such a shift, thus supporting the new model. [Supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council].
