Soya bean products are used widely in the animal feed industry as a protein based feed ingredient and
have been found to be adulterated with melamine. This was highlighted in the Chinese scandal of
2008. Dehulled soya (GM and non-GM), soya hulls and toasted soya were contaminated with melamine
and spectra were generated using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS). By applying chemometrics
to the spectral data, excellent calibration models and prediction statistics were obtained. The coefficients
of determination (R2) were found to be 0.89–0.99 depending on the mathematical algorithm used,
the data pre-processing applied and the sample type used. The corresponding values for the root mean
square error of calibration and prediction were found to be 0.081–0.276% and 0.134–0.368%, respectively,
again depending on the chemometric treatment applied to the data and sample type. In addition, adopting
a qualitative approach with the spectral data and applying PCA, it was possible to discriminate
between the four samples types and also, by generation of Cooman’s plots, possible to distinguish
between adulterated and non-adulterated samples.

The use of handheld near infrared (NIR) instrumentation, as a tool for rapid analysis, has the potential to be used widely in the animal feed sector. A comparison was made between handheld NIR and benchtop instruments in terms of proximate analysis of poultry feed using off-the-shelf calibration models and including statistical analysis. Additionally, melamine adulterated soya bean products were used to develop qualitative and quantitative calibration models from the NIRS spectral data with excellent calibration models and prediction statistics obtained. With regards to the quantitative approach, the coefficients of determination (R2) were found to be 0.94-0.99 with the corresponding values for the root mean square error of calibration and prediction were found to be 0.081-0.215 % and 0.095-0.288 % respectively. In addition, cross validation was used to further validate the models with the root mean square error of cross validation found to be 0.101-0.212 %. Furthermore, by adopting a qualitative approach with the spectral data and applying Principal Component Analysis, it was possible to discriminate between adulterated and pure samples.

Eight Jersey cows were used in two balanced 4 x 4 Latin Squares to investigate the effects of replacement of dietary starch with non-forage fibre on productivity, diet digestibility and feeding behaviour. Total-mixed rations consisted of maize silage, grass silage and a soyabean meal-based concentrate mixture, each at 250g/kg DM, with the remaining 250g consisting of cracked wheat/soya hulls (SH) in the ratios of 250:0, 167:83; 83:167 and 0:250 g, respectively, for treatments SH0, SH83, SH167 and SH250. Starch concentrations were 302, 248, 193 and 140g/kg DM, and NDF concentrations were 316, 355, 394 and 434g/kg DM, for treatments SHO, SH83, SH167 and SH250, respectively. Total eating time increased (p < 0.05) as SH inclusion increased, but total rumination time was unaffected. Digestibility of DM, organic matter and starch declined (p < 0.01) as SH inclusion increased, whilst digestibility of NDF and ADF increased (p < 0.01). Dry-matter intake tended to decline with increasing SH, whilst bodyweight, milk yield and fat and lactose concentrations were unaffected by treatment. Milk protein concentration decreased (p < 0.01) as SH level increased. Feed conversion efficiency improved (p < 0.05) as SH inclusion rose, but it was not possible to determine whether this was due to the increased fibre levels alone, or the favourable effect on rumen fermentation of decreasing starch levels. Recent studies into price transmission have recognized the important role played by transport and transaction costs. Threshold models are one approach to accommodate such costs. We develop a generalized Threshold Error Correction Model to test for the presence and form of threshold behavior in price transmission that is symmetric around equilibrium. We use monthly wheat, maize, and soya prices from the United States, Argentina, and Brazil to demonstrate this model. Classical estimation of these generalized models can present challenges but Bayesian techniques avoid many of these problems. Evidence for thresholds is found in three of the five commodity price pairs investigated.

Sixteen early to mid lactation Finnish Ayrshire dairy cows were used in a cyclic change-over experiment with four 21-day experimental periods and a 4 5 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effects of heat-treated rapeseed expeller and solvent-extracted soya-bean meal protein supplements on animal performance. Dietary treatments consisted of grass silage offered ad libitum supplemented with a fixed amount of a cereal based concentrate (10 kg/day on a fresh weight basis) containing 120, 150, 180 or 210 g crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM). Concentrate CP content was manipulated by replacement of basal ingredients (g/kg) with either rapeseed expeller (R; 120, 240 and 360) or soya-bean meal (S; 80, 160 and 240). Increases in concentrate CP stimulated linear increases (P < 0.05) in silage intake (mean 22.5 and 23.8 g DM per g/kg increase in dietary CP content, for R and S, respectively) and milk production. Concentrate inclusion of rapeseed expeller elicited higher (P < 0.01) milk yield and milk protein output responses (mean 108 and 3.71 g/day per g/kg DM increase in dietary CP content) than soya-bean meal (corresponding values 62 and 2.57). Improvements in the apparent utilization of dietary nitrogen for milk protein synthesis (mean 0.282 and 0.274, for R and S, respectively) were associated with higher (P < 0.05) plasma concentrations of histidine, branched-chain, essential and total amino acids (35, 482, 902 and 2240 and 26, 410, 800 and 2119 mu mol/l, respectively) and lower (P < 0.01) concentrations of urea (corresponding values 4.11 and 4.52 mmol/l). Heat-treated rapeseed expeller proved to be a more effective protein supplement than solvent-extracted soya-bean meal for cows offered grass silage-based diets.

sSPI, 7S, and 11S globulin at 12% (w/v) protein concentration, at neutral pH, did not form gels when heat-treated (90 degreesC, 15 min) or when high pressure-treated (300-700 MPa), except for the I IS, which formed a gel when heat-treated. The combination of heat and pressure (that is heating the solutions in a water bath and then pressure-treating at room temperature or the reverse sequence), led to differences: when heat-treatment was before high-pressure treatment, only the I IS fraction formed a self-standing gel; however, when the solutions were pressurised before heat treatment, all the proteins formed self-standing gels. The textural and water-holding properties were measured on the gels formed with the three different soy proteins. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Soya isoflavones are thought to be cardioprotective due to their structural similarity to oestrogen. In order to investigate the effect of soya isoflavones on markers of endothelial function we conducted a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study with thirty healthy postmenopausal women. The women consumed cereal bars, with or without soya isoflavones (50 mg/d), for 8 weeks, separated by an 8-week washout period. Systemic arterial complince (SAC), isobaric arterial compliance (IAC), flow-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilation (FMD) and nitroglycerine-mediated endothelium-independent vasodilation (NMD) were measured at the beginning of the study and after each intervention period. Blood pressure (BP) and plasma concentrations of nitrite and nitrate (NOx) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) were measured at the beginning and end of each intervention period. NMD was 13.4 (sem 2.0) % at baseline and 15.5 (sem 1.1) % after isoflavone treatment compared with 12.4 (sem 1.0) % after placebo treatment (P=0.03). NOx increased from 27.7 (sem 2.7) to 31.1 (sem 3.2) mu m after isoflavones treatment compared with 25.4 (sem 1.5) to 20.4 (sem 1.1) mu m after placebo treatment (P=0.003) and a significant increase in the NOx:ET-1 ratio (P=0.005) was observed after the isoflavone treatment compared with placebo. A significant difference in SAC after the isoflavone and placebo treatment was observed (P=0.04). No significant difference was found in FMD, IAC, BP and ET-1. In conclusion, 8 weeks' consumption of cereals bars enriched with 50 mg soya isoflavones/d increased plasma NOx concentrations and improved endothelium-independent vasodilation in healthy postmenopausal women.
