The results presented in this thesis have been achieved under the Ph.D. project entitled “Nonaqueous Sol-Gel routes to doped metal oxide nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, assembly and properties”. The purpose of this study is the investigation of metal oxide nanostructures doped with metals of a diverse nature, leading to different type of applications. The easier control over the reaction kinetics in solvothermal routes, compared to aqueous methods, allows to better match the reactivity between metal oxide precursors, paving the way to a facile and low temperature production of doped oxides. In this manuscript diverse examples of the exploitation of the “Benzyl Alcohol Route” are discussed. Such a powerful pathway was utilized for the synthesis of transition metal doped zirconia, hafnia and various perovskites, and the study of their magnetic properties, as well as the synthesis of rare earth doped zirconium oxide. A further extension, proving the solidity of the synthetic method, is shown for the preparation of Li4Ti5O12 nanocrystals carrying excellent electrochemical properties for lithium-ion battery applications. Finally, the effect of doping and other reaction parameters on the assembly of the nanocrystals is discussed. These studies were carried out principally at the University of Aveiro, as well as at the University of Montpellier II and at the Seoul National University due to complementary available expertises and equipments.

In the work reported here, optically clear, ultrathin TEOS derived sol-gel slides which were suitable for studies of tryptophan (Trp) fluorescence from entrapped proteins were prepared by the sol-gel technique and characterized. The monitoring of intrinsic protein fluorescence provided information about the structure and environment of the entrapped protein, and about the kinetics of the interaction between the entrapped protein and extemal reagents. Initial studies concentrated on the single Trp protein monellin which was entrapped into the sol-gel matrices. Two types of sol-gel slides, termed "wet aged", in which the gels were aged in buffer and "dry-aged", in which the gels were aged in air , were studied in order to compare the effect of the sol-gel matrix on the structure of the protein at different aging stages. Fluorescence results suggested that the mobility of solvent inside the slides was substantially reduced. The interaction of the entrapped protein with both neutral and charged species was examined and indicated response times on the order of minutes. In the case of the neutral species the kinetics were diffusion limited in solution, but were best described by a sum of first order rate constants when the reactions occurred in the glass matrix. For charged species, interactions between the analytes and the negatively charged glass matrix caused the reaction kinetics to become complex, with the overall reaction rate depending on both the type of aging and the charge on the analyte. The stability and conformational flexibility of the entrapped monellin were also studied. These studies indicated that the encapsulation of monellin into dry-aged monoliths caused the thermal unfolding transition to broaden and shift upward by 14°C, and causedthe long-term stability to improve by 12-fold (compared to solution). Chemical stability studies also showed a broader transition for the unfolding of the protein in dry-aged monoliths, and suggested that the protein was present in a distribution of environments. Results indicated that the entrapped proteins had a smaller range of conformational motions compared to proteins in solution, and that entrapped proteins were not able to unfold completely. The restriction of conformational motion, along with the increased structural order of the internal environment of the gels, likely resulted in the improvements in themial and long-term stability that were observed. A second protein which was also studied in this work is the metal binding protein rat oncomodulin. Initially, the unfolding behavior of this protein in aqueous solution was examined. Several single tryptophan mutants of the metal-binding protein rat oncomodulin (OM) were examined; F102W, Y57W, Y65W and the engineered protein CDOM33 which had all 12 residues of the CD loop replaced with a higher affinity binding loop. Both the thermal and the chemical stability were improved upon binding of metal ions with the order apo < Ca^^ < Tb^"^. During thermal denaturation, the transition midpoints (Tun) of Y65W appeared to be the lowest, followed by Y57W and F102W. The placement of the Trp residue in the F-helix in F102W apparently made the protein slightly more thermostable, although the fluorescence response was readily affected by chemical denaturants, which probably acted through the disruption of hydrogen bonds at the Cterminal end of the F-helix. Under both thermal and chemical denaturation, the engineered protein showed the highest stability. This indicated that increasing the number of metal ligating oxygens in the binding site, either by using a metal ion with a higher coordinatenumber (i.e. Tb^*) which binds more carboxylate ligands, or by providing more ligating groups, as in the CDOM33 replacement, produces notable improvements in protein stability. Y57W and CE)OM33 OM were chosen for further studies when encapsulated into sol-gel derived matrices. The kinetics of interaction of terbium with the entrapped proteins, the ability of the entrapped protein to binding terbium, as well as thermal stability of these two entrapped protein were compared with different levels of Ca^"*^ present in the matrix and in solution. Results suggested that for both of the proteins, the response time and the ability to bind terbium could be adjusted by adding excess calcium to the matrix before gelation. However, the less stable protein Y57W only retained at most 45% of its binding ability in solution while the more stable protein CDOM33 was able to retain 100% binding ability. Themially induced denaturation also suggested that CDOM33 showed similar stability to the protein in solution while Y57W was destabilized. All these results suggested that "hard" proteins (i.e. very stable) can easily survive the sol-gel encapsulation process, but "soft" proteins with lower thermodynamic stability may not be able to withstand the sol-gel process. However, it is possible to control many parameters in order to successfully entrap biological molecules into the sol-gel matrices with maxunum retention of activity.

Fine particles of lithium ferrite were synthesized by the sol-gel method. By subsequent heat treatment at different temperatures, lithium ferrites of different grain sizes were prepared. A structural characterization of all the samples was conducted by the x-ray diffraction technique. A grain size of around 12 nm was observed for Li0.5Fe2.5O4 obtained through the sol-gel method. Magnetic properties of lithium ferrite nanoparticles with grain size ranging from 12 to 32 nm were studied. Magnetization measurements showed that Li0.5Fe2.5O4 fine particles exhibit a deviation from the predicted magnetic behaviour. The as-prepared sample of lithium ferrite showed a maximum saturation magnetization of 75 emu g−1. Variation of coercivity is attributed to the transition from multi-domain to single domain nature. Dielectric permittivity and ac conductivity of all the samples were evaluated as a function of frequency, temperature and grain size. Variation of permittivity and ac conductivity with frequency reveals that the dispersion is due to the Maxwell–Wagner type interfacial polarization

In this work, a sol-gel route was used to prepare Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) glassy thin films by spin-coating technique looking for the preparation and optimization of planar waveguides for integrated optics. The films were deposited on silica and silicon substrates using stable sols synthesized by the sol-gel process. Deposits with thicknesses ranging between 520 and 720 nm were prepared by a multi-layer process involving heat treatments at different temperatures from glass transition to the film crystallization and using heating rates of 2 degrees C/min. The structural characterization of the layers was performed by using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy as a function of the heat treatment. Microstructural evolution in terms of annealing temperatures was followed by high resolution scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Optical transmission spectra were used to determine the refractive index and the film thicknesses through the envelope method. The optical and guiding properties of the films were studied by m-line spectroscopy. The best films were monomode with 620 nm thickness and a refractive index around 1.664 at 980 nm wavelength. They showed good waveguiding properties with high light-coupling efficiency and low propagation loss at 632.8 and 1550 nm of about 0.88 dB/cm. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MgAl(2)O(4):Eu, Dy nanoparticles were prepared by citrate sol-gel method and thermally treated at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C. The trivalent europium ion is partially reduced to the divalent state at 700 and 800 degrees C. Infrared spectra of the phosphors showed bands around 700 and 520 cm(-1) corresponding to the AlO(6) groups. X-ray diffraction patterns present sharp reflections of samples heated from 700 to 900 degrees C indicating the MgAl(2)O(4) spinel phase. Grain size in the range 20-30 nm were observed by measurement of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The emission spectra of the phosphors show a broadened band at 480 nm assigned to the 4f(G)5d -> 4f(7) ((8)S(7/2)) transition of Eu(2+) ion overlapped to the (4)F(9/2) -> (6)H(15/2) transition of the Dy(3+) ion. Besides, the (4)F(9/2) -> (6)H(13/2) transition (579 nm) of Dy(3+) ion is overlapped with the (5)D(0) -> (7)F(0) (578 nm) and (5)D(0) -> (7)F(1) (595 nm) transitions from the Eu(3+) ion. Excitation spectra of the sample heated at 900 degrees C monitoring the excitation at 615 nm of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(2) transition of Eu(3+) ion exhibit a broad band assigned to the O -> Eu(3+) ligand-to-metal charge-transfer states (LMCT) around 280 nm. The samples present green persistent luminescence after exposure to UV radiation. The chromaticity coordinates were obtained from the luminescence emission spectrum. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Titanium dioxide with and without the addition of neodymium ions was prepared using sol-gel and precipitation methods. The resulting catalysts were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and BET specific surface area. Neodymium addition exerted a remarkable influence on the phase transition temperature and the surface properties of the TiO(2) matrix. TiO(2) samples synthesized by precipitation exhibit an exothermic event related from the amorphous to anatase phase transition at 510 degrees C, whereas in Nd-doped TiO(2) this transition occurred at 527 degrees C. A similar effect was observed in samples obtained using sol-gel method. The photocatalytic reactivity of the catalysts was evaluated by photodegradation of Remazol Black B (RB) under ultraviolet irradiation. Nd-doped TiO(2) showed enhanced photodegradation ability compared to undoped TiO(2) samples, independent of the method of synthesis. In samples obtained by sol-gel, RB decoloration was enhanced by 16% for TiO(2) doped with 0.5% neodymium ions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Photoluminescence data of Eu-doped SnO(2) xerogels are presented, yielding information on the symmetry of Eu(3+) luminescent centers, which can be related to their location in the matrix: at lattice sites, substituting to Sn(4+), or segregated at particles surface. Influence of doping concentration and/or particle size on the photoluminescence spectra obtained by energy transfer from the matrix to Eu(3+) sites is investigated. Results show that a better efficiency in the energy transfer processes is obtained for high symmetry Eu(3+) sites and low doping levels. Emission intensity from (5)D(0) -> (7)F(1) transition increases as the temperature is raised from 10 to 240 K, under excitation at 266 nm laser line, because in this transition the multiphonon emission becomes significant only above 240 K. As an extension of this result, we predict high effectiveness for room temperature operation of Eu-based optical communication devices. X-ray diffraction data show that the impurity excess inhibits particle growth, which may influence the asymmetry ratio of luminescence spectra.

The absorption edge and the bandgap transition of sol-gel-dip-coating SnO2 thin films, deposited on quartz substrates, are evaluated from optical absorption data and temperature dependent photoconductivity spectra. Structural properties of these films help the interpretation of bandgap transition nature, since the obtained nanosized dimensions of crystallites are determinant on dominant growth direction and, thus, absorption energy. Electronic properties of the bulk and (110) and (101) surfaces are also presented, calculated by means of density functional theory applied to periodic calculations at B3LYP hybrid functional level. Experimentally obtained absorption edge is compared to the calculated energy band diagrams of bulk and (110) and (101) surfaces. The overall calculated electronic properties in conjunction with structural and electro-optical experimental data suggest that the nature of the bandgap transition is related to a combined effect of bulk and (101) surface, which presents direct bandgap transition.

Structural, optical, electro and photoelectrochemical properties of amorphous and crystalline sol-gel Nb2O5 coatings have been determined. The coatings are n-type semiconductor with indirect allowed transition and present an overall low quantum efficiency (phi < 4%) for UV light to electric conversion. The photoconducting behavior of the coatings is discussed within the framework of the Gartner and Sodergren models. Improvement can be foreseen if Nb2O5 coatings can be made of 10-20 nm size nanoparticles.

Tin dioxide (SnO2) thin film photoconductivity spectra were measured for a large temperature range using a deuterium source, the intensity of photocurrent spectra in the range 200-400 nm is temperature dependent, and the photocurrent increases in the ultraviolet even for illumination with photon energies much higher than the bandgap transition. This behavior is related to recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundaries, which is consistent with nanoscopic crystallite size of sol-gel deposited films. Yttrium-aluminum oxides are interesting compounds and they have been extensively used as host for lasers and phosphors, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. The fabrication of yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) has been investigated thoroughly. Single-crystal YAG is expensive and to produce it a new way has been investigated. This process consists of modifying the methodology of reagents mixture and the process of heating them. The microwave irradiation is used to heat-treat the oxide mixture. The traditional synthesis of YAG powders occurs through the reaction of aluminum and yttrium powders at high temperatures. With this work we investigated the preparation of YAG by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route as an alternative methodology to obtain yttrium-aluminum matrix from inorganic precursors (yttrium and aluminum chloride). The preparation of the gel was carried out in an oven-dried glassware. The AlCl3, YCl3 and ethanol were reacted in reflux under argon atmosphere. Europium III chloride was added as a structural probe. The powder was dried and heat-treated in modified microwaves. The samples were pre-treated at 50 and 800 C during I h and then heated in microwaves for 30 s, 2 and 4 min. The formation process and structure of the powders were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). XRD presents only picks corresponding to the YAG phase and confirmed by TEM. PL date showed that the YAG phase was formed in 2 min with the samples pre-treated at 50 C. For the samples pretreated at 800 degrees C, the YAG phase appears in 30s. The excitation spectra present a maximum of 394 nm corresponding to the L-5(6) level and emission spectra of Eu III ion present bands characteristic transitions arising from the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) monifolds excited at their maximum. The magnetic dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(1) transition presents more intensity than the electric dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. This methodology showed efficiency in obtaining YAG phase. Aware of the difficulties in applying sol-gel technology on the preparation of thin films suitable for optical devices, the present paper reports on the preparation of crack-free erbium- and ytterbium-doped silica: hafnia thick films onto silica on silicon. The film was obtained using a dispersion of silica-hafnia nanoparticles into a binder solution, spin-coating, regular thermal process and rapid thermal process. The used methodology has allowed a significant increase of the film thickness. Based on the presented results good optical-quality films with the required thickness for a fiber matching single mode waveguide were obtained using the erbium- and ytterbium-activated sol-gel silica:hafnia system. The prepared film supports two transversal electric modes at 1550 nm and the difference between the transversal electric mode and the transversal magnetic mode is very small, indicating low birefringence. Photoluminescence of the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition of erbium ions shows a broad band centered at 1.53 mu m with full width at a half maximum of 28 nm. Up-conversion emission was carried out under different pump laser powers, and just one transition at red region was observed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports on the preparation of erbium and ytterbium co-doped SiO2:HfO2 single mode planar waveguides using the sol-gel method. Silica nanoparticles were prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate in basic media and the films were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical profilometry, M-lines spectroscopy based on prism coupling technique, X-ray diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The film thicknesses and the refractive indexes were adjusted in order to satisfy a future efficient coupling to single mode optical fiber. Films suitable for both weak and strong light confinement were prepared varying hafnia concentration into the silica matrix. The lifetime values of erbium I-4(13/2) state were measured in order to investigate the influence of clustering and hydroxyl groups on the fluorescence quantum efficiency of the I-4(13/2) level, responsible for the emission at 1.55 mu m attributed to the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition. The high lifetime values suggest the absence of erbium clusters and the elimination of hydroxyl groups by rapid thermal process. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
