This article reassesses the importance of the Baudelaire's criticism of the art of Daumier in relation to his theorization of memory. It argues that more than Guys, Daumier may represent for the poet the quintessential 'peintre de la vie moderne'.

Drawing on the theoretical insights of Paul Ricoeur this paper investigates the geographies of public remembrance in a post-conflict society. In Northern Ireland, where political divisions have found expression through acts of extreme violence over the past 30 years, questions of memory and an amnesty for forgetting have particular resonance both at the individual and societal level, and render Ricoeur’s framework particularly prescient. Since the signing of the Belfast Agreement in 1998, initiating the Peace Process through consociational structures, discovering a nomenclature and set of practices which would aid in the rapprochement of a deeply divided society has presented a complex array of issues. In this paper I examine the various practices of public remembrance of the 1998 bombing of Omagh as a means of understanding how memory-spaces evolve in a post-conflict context. In Omagh there were a variety of commemorative practices instituted and each, in turn, adopted a different contour towards achieving reconciliation with the violence and grief of the bombing. In particular the Garden of Light project is analysed as a collective monument which, with light as its metaphysical centre, invited the populace to reflect backward on the pain of the bombing while at the same time enabling the society to look forward toward a peaceful future where a politics of hope might eclipse a politics of despair.

A novel [Ni'S-4'Fe-2(CO)(6)] cluster (1: 'S-4'=(CH3C6H3S2)(2)(CH2)(3)) has been synthesised, structurally characterised and has been shown to undergo a chemically reversible reduction process at -1.31 V versus Fc(+)/Fc to generate the EPR-active monoanion 1(-). Multifrequency Q-, X- and S-band EPR spectra of Ni-61-enriched 1(-) show a well-resolved quartet hyperfine splitting in the low-field region due to the interaction with a single Ni-61 (I = 3/2) nucleus. Simulations of the EPR spectra require the introduction of a single angle of non-coincidence between g, and A(1), and g(3) and A(3) to reproduce all of the features in the S- and X-band spectra. This behaviour provides a rare example of the detection and measurement of non-coincidence effects from frozen-solution EPR spectra without the need for single-crystal measurements, and in which the S-band experiment is sensitive to the non-coincidence. An analysis of the EPR spectra of 1(-) reveals a 24% Ni contribution to the SOMO in 1(-), supporting a delocalisation of the spin-density across the NiFe2 cluster. This observation is supported by IR spectroscopic results which show that the CO stretching frequencies, v(CO), shift to lower frequency by about 70 cm(-1) when 1 is reduced to 1(-). Density functional calculations provide a framework for the interpretation of the spectroscopic properties of 1(-) and suggest that the SOMO is delocalised over the whole cluster, but with little S-centre participation. This electronic structure contrasts with that of the Ni-A, -B, -C and -L forms of [NiFe] hydrogenase in which there is considerable S participation in the SOMO.

Hydrogenases are enzymes that catalyse the reversible two-electron oxidation of H-2. The [NiFe] hydrogenases have been characterised spectroscopically and by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and show an active site incorporating a heterobinuclear [NiFe] centre bridged by two cysteine S-donors. Low molecular weight synthetic complex models, which structurally mimic the dithiolate-bridged [NiFe] centre, serve as important probes of structure and chemistry at the active site and are the subject of this review. The computer molecular docking of piperonyl acid piperidide (BDP) and some its analogs already known as ampakins was conducted for estimating their possible binding with AMPA-receptor glutamate domains in cyclothiazide binding area and for further design of new structures maximally complimentary to the receptor. On the base of the conducted docking it can be suggested that the binding site of BDP (amides of benzodioxane-6-carboxylic and piperonyl acids) analogs is located in AMPA-receptor cyclothiazide binding pocket. It is shown that formation of protein-ligand complexes of AMPA-receptor with benzodioxane-6-carboxylic and piperonyl acid derivatives, similarly to cyclothiazide, proceeds with interaction with Ser497, Leu751, which significance is confirmed by site-specific mutagenesis.

Homology modeling was used to build 3D models of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor glycine binding site on the basis of an X-ray structure of the water-soluble AMPA-sensitive receptor. The docking of agonists and antagonists to these models was used to reveal binding modes of ligands and to explain known structure-activity relationships. Two types of quantitative models, 3D-QSAR/CoMFA and a regression model based on docking energies, were built for antagonists (derivatives of 4-hydroxy-2-quinolone, quinoxaline-2,3-dione, and related compounds). The CoMFA steric and electrostatic maps were superimposed on the homology-based model, and a close correspondence was marked. The derived computational models have permitted the evaluation of the structural features crucial for high glycine binding site affinity and are important for the design of new ligands.

We present new homology-based models of the glutamate binding site (in closed and open forms) of the NMDA receptor NR2B subunit derived from X-ray structures of the water soluble AMPA sensitive glutamate receptor. The models were used for revealing binding modes of agonists and competitive antagonists, as well as for rationalizing known experimental facts concerning structure-activity relationships: (i) the switching between the agonist and the antagonist modes of action upon lengthening the chain between the distal acidic group and the amino acid moiety, (ii) the preference for the methyl group attached to the a-amino group of ligands, (iii) the preference for the D-configuration of agonists and antagonists, and (iv) the existence of "superacidic" agonists.
