In the South Atlantic, at Sites 519 to 523, the dissolution of calcareous oozes ended in the formation of red clays rich in iron and manganese. The early authigenesis of manganese oxides and clays is described in Miocene marly calcareous oozes. The mineralogical and geochemical influences of basaltic basement weathering are shown by the occurrence of palagonite, authigenic clays, and oxides in the basal sediments. The development of red clay facies can be inhibited by local topographic and paleoceanographic changes, as at Site 520.

Pelagic sedimentation in the northwest Indian Ocean has been studied using sediments from Hole 711A (the section from 0 to 70.5 mbsf, 0-22 Ma), a deep site (4428 m) drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 115. The clay fraction of the sediments represents poorly developed pelagic deposits with considerably lower contents of Mn, Ba, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Zn than is typical for well-oxidized pelagic sediments formed far from the continents (e.g., in the central Indian or Pacific oceans). Geochemical provenance models, representing conservative mixing models with terrigenous, exhalative-volcanic, and biogenous matter as the only inputs, explain most of the compositional variations in the sediments. The models show that terrigenous matter accounts for about 96%-100% of all SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, and Zr; about 73%-85% of all Fe2O3, V, and Ni; and about 40%-60% of the Cu and Zn abundances. Exhalative-volcanic matter delivers a large fra tion of Mn (78%-85%), some Fe (15%-219/o), and possibly some Cu (38%-51%). Biogenous deposition is generally of restricted significance; at most 6%-35% of all Cu and Zn may derive from biogenic matter. The exhalative-volcanic matter is slightly more abundant in the oldest deposits, reflecting a plate tectonic drift away from the volcanic Carlsberg Ridge. The Al/Ti ratio reveals that silicic crustal matter plays a somewhat larger role in the upper and lower part of the section studied, whereas the basaltic input is slightly higher in the intermediate levels (age 5-15 m.y.). The sediment abundances of Ba generally exceed those predicted by the models, an anomalous behavior also observed in equatorial Pacific sediments. This is possibly caused by poor knowledge of the input components. Several changes in accumulation rates seem to correlate with climatic changes (onset of monsoon-driven upwellings and sea-level regressions of about 50-100 m at 10, 15-16, and 20-21 Ma). A number of constituents show higher accumulation rates at or shortly after these regressions, suggesting an accelerated removal of fines from shallow oceanic areas. Furthermore, the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio shows a small increase in sediments younger than 10 Ma, implying an increase in biological productivity, particularly after the onset of monsoon-driven upwelling in the northwest Indian Ocean. This trend is paralleled by a general increase in the accumulation rates of Ba and CaCO3. However, these accumulation rates are generally significantly lower than under the biological high-productivity zone in the equatorial Pacific. The onset of these upwelling systems about 10 Ma is probably related to the closing of the gap between India and the main Asiatic continent, preventing free circulation around the Indian subcontinent.

The phase equilibria in the Al-Fe-Zn-O system in the range 1250 °C to 1695 °C in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The phase diagram of the binary Al2O3-ZnO system and isothermal sections of the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system at 1250 °C, 1400 °C, and 1550 °C have been constructed and reported for the first time. The extents of solid solutions in the corundum (Al,Fe)2O3, hematite (Fe,Al)2O3, Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase (Al,Fe)2O3, spinel (Al,Fe,Zn)O4, and zincite (Al,Zn,Fe)O primary phase fields have been measured. Corundum, hematite, and Al2O3*Fe2O3 phases dissolve less than 1 mol pct zinc oxide. The limiting compositions of Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase measured in this study at 1400 °C are slightly nonstoichiometric, containing more Al2O3 then previously reported. Spinel forms an extensive solid solution in the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system in air with increasing temperature. Zincite was found to dissolve up to 7 mole pct of aluminum in the presence of iron at 1550 °C in air. A meta-stable Al2O3-rich phase of the approximate composition Al8FeZnO14+x was observed at all of the conditions investigated. Aluminum dissolved in the zincite in the presence of iron appears to suppress the transformation from a round to platelike morphology.

The phase equilibria in the Fe-Mg-Zn-O system in the temperature range 1100-1550degreesC in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The compositions of condensed phases in equilibrium in the binary MgO-ZnO system and the ternary Fe-Mg-O system have been reported at sub-solidus in air. Pseudo-ternary sections of the quaternary Fe-Mg-Zn-O system at 1100, 1250 and 1400degreesC in air were constructed using the experimental data. The solid solution of iron oxide, MgO and ZnO in the periclase (Mg, Zn, Fe)O, spinel (Mg2+, Fe2+, Zn2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 and zincite (Zn, Mg, Fe)O phases were found to be extensive under the conditions investigated. A continuous spinel solid solution is formed between the magnesioferrite (Mg2+, Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 and franklinite (Zn2+, Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 end-members at 1100 and 1250degreesC, extending to magnetite (Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 at 1400degreesC in air. The compositions along the spinel boundaries were found to be non-stoichiometric, the magnitude of the non-stoichiometry being a function of composition and temperature in air. It was found that hematite dissolves neither MgO nor ZnO in air.

This paper discusses the correlation of thermal conductivity, density and magnetic susceptibility with composition of major and trace elements of Neoproterozoic igneous bodies from Borborema Province, Northeastern Brazil. These properties were used as potential markers among the studied magmatic suites. For the correlation between petrophysical and geochemical properties it was considered a set of 195 chemical analyzes of granitoid rocks, separated by the degree of acidity in basic, intermediate and acidic. Major (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O and TiO2) and some trace elements (Rb, Sr, Ba, Zr, Th and U) that are usually linked to the formation of the most common minerals of igneous rocks were used. The results show that SiO2 has the best positive correlation with the thermal conductivity, while Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, MgO and TiO2 exhibit negative correlation for the same property. The correlation with density is opposite to that one for these oxides with the thermal conductivity. The magnetic susceptibility did not correlate with the elements studied. The results for thermal conductivity and density indicate a tendency of SiO2 and oxides with higher affinity with mafic minerals (Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, TiO2 and MgO) in controlling these petrophysical parameters. The set of samples was divided into five different magmatic suites based on their lithogeochemical aspects into: i) peralkaline / alkaline; ii) alkaline; iii) calc-alkaline; iv) high potassium calcium alkaline; and v) shoshonitic. Data analysis showed that the thermal conductivity and density presented good results in the individualization of these suites, notably between peralkaline / alkaline, alkaline suites, calc-alkaline and shoshonitic. However, the high-K calc-alkaline suite overlapped with the other. In contrast, the magnetic susceptibility did not show effective results for separating the five chemical suites.

The main objective of this investigation was to study distribution of main chemical constituents and several minor elements in sediment sections drilled during DSDP Legs 56 and 57 in the Japan Trench, in order to infer geochemical features of different lithologic types of sediments, and to find out how the geochemistry is associated with major lithologic constituents, such as terrigenous detrital matter, clay, volcanic ash, and biogenic particles. The geochemical data may help to indicate the nature of the sediments and to interpret sedimentation processes. The analyzed samples seem to be representative of most lithologic units, sub-units, and sediment types drilled at all sites on both legs, except for some shallow-water deposits at Sites 438 and 439. We analyzed bulk-sediment composition by X-ray fluorescence (Kuzmina and Turanskaya) and routine wet-chemical methods (Mikhailov); amorphous SiO2, extracted in a boiling sodium carbonate solution (Analythical Laboratory, P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology); Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, and Al by atomic absorption (Gordeev); and Sn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, V, B, and Ag by quantitative spectrographic analyses in both bulk samples and granulometric fractions (Mikhailov). In addition, Fe, Ti, Mn, and CaCO3 have been determined in selected samples by routine wet-chemical methods (Analytical Laboratory, P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology). Murdmaa was responsible for interpretation of the results.

Oil wells subjected to cyclic steam injection present important challenges for the development of well cementing systems, mainly due to tensile stresses caused by thermal gradients during its useful life. Cement sheath failures in wells using conventional high compressive strength systems lead to the use of cement systems that are more flexible and/or ductile, with emphasis on Portland cement systems with latex addition. Recent research efforts have presented geopolymeric systems as alternatives. These cementing systems are based on alkaline activation of amorphous aluminosilicates such as metakaolin or fly ash and display advantageous properties such as high compressive strength, fast setting and thermal stability. Basic geopolymeric formulations can be found in the literature, which meet basic oil industry specifications such as rheology, compressive strength and thickening time. In this work, new geopolymeric formulations were developed, based on metakaolin, potassium silicate, potassium hydroxide, silica fume and mineral fiber, using the state of the art in chemical composition, mixture modeling and additivation to optimize the most relevant properties for oil well cementing. Starting from molar ratios considered ideal in the literature (SiO2/Al2O3 = 3.8 e K2O/Al2O3 = 1.0), a study of dry mixtures was performed, based on the compressive packing model, resulting in an optimal volume of 6% for the added solid material. This material (silica fume and mineral fiber) works both as an additional silica source (in the case of silica fume) and as mechanical reinforcement, especially in the case of mineral fiber, which incremented the tensile strength. The first triaxial mechanical study of this class of materials was performed. For comparison, a mechanical study of conventional latex-based cementing systems was also carried out. Regardless of differences in the failure mode (brittle for geopolymers, ductile for latex-based systems), the superior uniaxial compressive strength (37 MPa for the geopolymeric slurry P5 versus 18 MPa for the conventional slurry P2), similar triaxial behavior (friction angle 21° for P5 and P2) and lower stifness (in the elastic region 5.1 GPa for P5 versus 6.8 GPa for P2) of the geopolymeric systems allowed them to withstand a similar amount of mechanical energy (155 kJ/m3 for P5 versus 208 kJ/m3 for P2), noting that geopolymers work in the elastic regime, without the microcracking present in the case of latex-based systems. Therefore, the geopolymers studied on this work must be designed for application in the elastic region to avoid brittle failure. Finally, the tensile strength of geopolymers is originally poor (1.3 MPa for the geopolymeric slurry P3) due to its brittle structure. However, after additivation with mineral fiber, the tensile strength became equivalent to that of latex-based systems (2.3 MPa for P5 and 2.1 MPa for P2). The technical viability of conventional and proposed formulations was evaluated for the whole well life, including stresses due to cyclic steam injection. This analysis was performed using finite element-based simulation software. It was verified that conventional slurries are viable up to 204ºF (400ºC) and geopolymeric slurries are viable above 500ºF (260ºC)

This paper carried out a chemical investigation of archaeological ceramic artifacts found in archaeological sites with Black Earth (ABE) in the Lower Amazon Region at Cachoeira-Porteira, State of Pará, Brazil. The ceramic artifacts, mostly of daily use, belong to Konduri culture (from 900 to 400 years BP). They are constituted of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O and P2O5; SiO2 and Al2O3 together add up to 80 % and indicate influence of acid rocks, transformed into clay minerals basically kaolinite. The relative high contents of P2O5 (2.37 % in average) come out as (Al,Fe)-phosphate, an uncommon fact in primitive red ceramics, but found in some roman and egyptian archaeological sites. The contents of the trace elements are similar or below the Earth's crust average. This chemical composition (except P2O5) detaches saprolite material derived acid igneous rocks or sedimentary ones as the main raw material of the ceramics. The contents of K, Na and Ca represent the feldspars and rock fragments possibly introduced into saprolitic groundmass, indicated by mineralogical studies. The presence of cauixi and cariapé as well as quartz sand was confirmed by optical microscope, SEM analyses and by the high silica contents of ceramic fragments. Phosphorus was possibly incorporated into groundmass during cooking of foods, and ABE soil profile formation developed on yellow Latosols. The raw materials and its tempers (cauixi, or cariapé, feldspar, crushed rocks, old ceramic artifacts and quartz fragments) are found close to the sites and therefore and certainly came from them.

Some of the characteristics peculiar to Litosois are discussed based on data published on Litosois occurring in the States of São Paulo and Paraná. Litosois are the first stages of development of a soil. Litosois probably originate through the exposure of the rockbed caused by an excessive relief. Rock weathering processes are intensive, prevailing those of chemical nature rather than those processes in which physical phenomena dominate. The A horizon has a high organic matter content (2% to 10%). Silt and clay amount to approximately 50% of the fine earth in the A horizon, with the exception of Litosois originated from sandstone and granite. The SiO2/Al2O3 relationship of the soil's colloidal complex and the clay's cation exchange capacity indicate that it is quite probable the presence of 2:1 type clay in Litosois derived from basic rocks.

ABSTRACT The study of soil chemical and physical properties variability is important for suitable management practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of soil properties in the Malhada do Meio settlement to subsidize soil use planning. The settlement is located in Chapadinha, MA, Brazil, and has an area of 630.86 ha. The vegetation is seasonal submontane deciduous forest and steppe savanna. The geology is formed of sandstones and siltstones of theItapecuru Formation and by colluvial and alluvial deposits. The relief consists of hills with rounded and flat tops with an average altitude of 67 m, and frequently covered over by ferruginous duricrusts. A total of 183 georeferenced soil samples were collected at the depth of 0.00-0.20 m inPlintossolos, Neossolo andGleissolo. The following chemical variables were analyzed: pH(CaCl2), H+Al, Al, SB, V, CEC, P, K, OM, Ca, Mg, SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3; along with particle size variables: clay, silt, and sand. Descriptive statistical and geostatistical analyses were carried out. The coefficient of variation (CV) was high for most of the variables, with the exception of pH with a low CV, and of sand with a medium CV. The models fitted to the experimental semivariograms of these variables were the exponential and the spherical. The range values were from 999 m to 3,690 m. For the variables pH(CaCl2), SB, and clay, there are three specific areas for land use planning. The central part of the area (zone III), where thePlintossolos Pétricos and Neossolos Flúvicos occur, is the most suitable for crops due to higher macronutrient content, organic matter and pH. Zones I and II are indicated for environmental preservation.
