This patient report presents an unusual onlay bone graft failure following local cocaine application. Three months after the bone grafting procedure performed in the anterior maxilla for bone volume augmentation, the bone graft was totally exposed in the oral cavity as a result of the rubbing of cocaine on the gingival tissue that covered the bone graft. A histologic view of the removed bone fragment presented not only an area of necrosis but also ample spaces filled with necrosis material and resorption areas. Dental practitioners need to be aware of this phenomenon because such patients often do not report the use of drugs, particularly cocaine. Copyright © 2005 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Pachydermodactyly is a rare and benign form of acquired digital fibromatosis characterized by the expansion of soft tissue around proximal phalanges and interphalangeal joints. The etiology remains unknown, although it is suggested that repetitive mechanic trauma like the interlacing or rubbing of the fingers can lead to skin thickening. We report a case of a young man with skin thickening around interphalangeal joints and compulsive finger manipulation habit. The histopathology disclosed hyperkeratosis, discrete papillomatosis, mild increase of fibroblasts and dermal mucinosis. The lesions regressed partially, after finger manipulation was stopped.

Objective. To describe behaviors related to hand cleaning in health professionals who work in the pediatric inpatient unit of a university hospital. Methodology. Descriptive study, in which the studied population was the sanitary staff who worked in a pediatric inpatient unit of a university hospital, there were a total of 43 people. Information was collected through an observation process and a survey applied on hand washing techniques, at the beginning of the study and a month later of the first one. Results. In just 7% of the observations, participants washed their hands before developing the procedure; one out of two followed the steps described in the technique. The most frequent failure in hand washing was presented in the step of rubbing the right hand palm over the left had dorsum, crossing the fingers and vice versa (18%). Conclusion. Participants of the study didn’t have the habit to wash their hands according to the recommended technique. Data suggest the necessity to promote educational actions to change staff behaviors and attitudes towards the steps and techniques of hand washing before and after performing any procedure.

The use of stones to crack open encapsulated fruit is widespread among wild bearded capuchin monkeys (Cebus libidinosus) inhabiting savanna-like environments. Some populations in Serra da Capivara National Park (Piaui, Brazil), though, exhibit a seemingly broader toolkit, using wooden sticks as probes, and employing stone tools for a variety of purposes. Over the course of 701.5 hr of visual contact of two wild capuchin groups we recorded 677 tool use episodes. Five hundred and seventeen of these involved the use of stones, and 160 involved the use of sticks (or other plant parts) as probes to access water, arthropods, or the contents of insects` nests. Stones were mostly used as ""hammers""-not only to open fruit or seeds, or smash other food items, but also to break dead wood, conglomerate rock, or cement in search of arthropods, to dislodge bigger stones, and to pulverize embedded quartz pebbles (licking, sniffing, or rubbing the body with the powder produced). Stones also were used in a ""hammer-like"" fashion to loosen the soil for digging out roots and arthropods, and sometimes as ""hoes"" to pull the loosened soil. In a few cases, we observed the re-utilization of stone tools for different purposes (N = 3), or the combined use of two tools-stones and sticks (N = 4) or two stones (N = 5), as sequential or associative tools. On three occasions, the monkeys used smaller stones to loosen bigger quartz pebbles embedded in conglomerate rock, which were subsequently used as tools. These could be considered the first reports of secondary tool use by wild capuchin monkeys. Am. J. Primatol. 71:242-251, 2009. (c) 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The Nuss procedure requires the creation of a substernal tunnel for bar positioning. This is a manoeuvre that can be dangerous, and cardiac perforation has occurred in a few cases. Our purpose was to describe two technical modifications that enable the prevention of these fatal complications. A series of 25 patients with pectus excavatum were treated with a modification of the Nuss procedure that included the entrance in the left haemithorax first, and the use of the retractor to lift the sternum, with the consequent lowering displacement of the heart. These modified techniques have certain advantages: (i) the narrow anterior mediastinum between the sternum and the pericardial sac is expanded by pulling up the sternum; (ii) the thoracoscopic visualization of the tip of the introducer during tunnel creation is improved; (iii) the rubbing of the introducer against the pericardium is minimized; (iv) the exit path of the introducer can be guided by the surgeon's finger and (v) haemostasis and integrity of the pericardial sac can be more easily confirmed. We observed that with these manoeuvres, the risk of pericardial sac and cardiac injury can be markedly reduced.

The frequency of anointing bouts and the materials used for self- and social anointing vary across capuchin species in captivity, but there is little published data on capuchin anointing in the wild. Here we present previously unpublished data on anointing behaviors from capuchin monkey populations at ten different field sites and incorporate these data into a review of the anointing literature for captive and wild capuchins. Using a comparative phylogenetic framework, we test four hypotheses derived primarily from captive literature for variation in anointing between wild untufted capuchins (Cebus) and tufted capuchins (Sapajus), including that (1) the frequency of anointing is higher in Cebus, (2) Cebus uses a higher proportion of plant species to insect species for anointing compared with Sapajus, (3) anointing material diversity is higher in Cebus, and (4) social indices of anointing are higher in Cebus. We found that wild Cebus anoints more with plant parts, including fruits, whereas wild Sapajus anoints more with ants and other arthropods. Cebus capucinus in particular uses more plant species per site for anointing compared with other capuchins and may specialize in anointing as an activity independent from foraging, whereas most other capuchin species tend to eat the substances they use for anointing. In agreement with captive studies, we found evidence that wild Cebus anoints at a significantly higher frequency than Sapajus. However, contrary to the captive literature, we found no difference in the range of sociality for anointing between Cebus and Sapajus in the wild. We review anointing in the context of other Neotropical primate rubbing behaviors and consider the evidence for anointing as self-medication; as a mechanism for enhanced sociality; and as a behavioral response to chemical stimuli. Liquid Crystal Polymer Brushes and their Application as Alignment Layers in Liquid Crystal Cells Polymer brushes with liquid crystalline (LC) side chains were synthesized on planar glass substrates and their nematic textures were investigated. The LC polymers consist of an acrylate or a methacrylate main chain and a phenyl benzoate group as the mesogenic unit which is connected to the main chain via a flexible alkyl spacer composed of six CH2 units. The preparation of the LC polymer brushes was carried out according to the grafting from technique: polymerization is carried out from azo-initiators that have been previously self-assembled on the substrate. LC polymer brushes with a thickness from a few nm to 230 nm were synthesized by varying the monomer concentration and the polymerization time. The LC polymer brushes were thick enough to allow for direct observation of the nematic textures with a polarizing microscope. The LC polymer brushes grown on untreated glass substrates exhibited irregular textures (polydomains). The domain size is in the range of some micrometers and depends only weakly on the brush thickness. The investigations on the texture-temperature relationship of the LC brushes revealed that the brushes exhibit a surface memory effect, that is, the identical texture reappears after the LC brush sample has experienced a thermal isotropization or a solvent treatment, at which the nematic LC state has been completely destroyed. The surface memory effect is attributed to a strong anchoring of the orientation of the mesogenic units to heterogeneities at the substrate surface. The exact nature of the surface heterogeneities is unknown. The effect was observed for the LC brushes swollen with low molecular weight nematic molecules, as well. Rubbing the glass substrate with a piece of velvet cloth prior to the surface modification with the initiator and the brush growth gives rise to the formation of homogenous alignment of the mesogenic units in the LC polymer side chains. Monodomain textures were obtained for these LC brushes. The mechanism for the homogeneous alignment is based on the transfer of Nylon fibers during the rubbing process. A surfactant was mixed with the azo-initiator in modifying rubbed substrates for subsequent brush generation. Such brushes exhibited biaxial optical properties. Hybrid LC cells made from a substrate modified with biaxial brushes and a rubbed glass substrate show an orientation with a tilt angle of a = 15.6 . This work shows that LC brushes grown on rubbed surfaces fulfill the important criteria for alignment layers: the formation of macroscopic monodomains. First results indicate that by diluting the brush with molecules which are also covalently bound to the surface but induce a different orientation, a system is obtained in which the two conflicting alignment mechanisms can be used to generate a tilted alignment. In order to allow for an application of the alignment layers into a potential product, subsequent work should focus on the questions how easy and in which range the tilt angle can be controlled.

Liquid crystals (LCs) are an interesting class of soft condensed matter systems characterized by an unusual combination of fluidity and long-range order, mainly known for their applications in displays (LCDs). However, the interest in LC continues to grow pushed by their application in new technologies in medicine, optical imaging, micro and nano technologies etc. In LCDs uniaxial alignment of LCs is mainly achieved by a rubbing process. During this treatment, the surfaces of polymer coated display substrates are rubbed in one direction by a rotating cylinder covered with a rubbing cloth. Basically, LC alignment involves two possible aligning directions: uniaxial planar (homogeneous) and vertical (homeotropic) to the display substrate. An interesting unresolved question concerning LCs regards the origin of their alignment on rubbed surfaces, and in particular on the polymeric ones used in the display industry. Most studies have shown that LCs on the surface of the rubbed polymer film layer are lying parallel to the rubbing direction. In these systems, micrometric grooves are generated on the film surface along the rubbing direction and also the polymer chains are stretched in this direction. Both the parallel aligned microgrooves and the polymer chains at the film surface may play a role in the LC alignment and it is not easy to quantify the effect of each contribution. The work described in this thesis is an attempt to find new microscopic evidences on the origin of LC alignment on polymeric surfaces through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which allow the investigation of the phenomenon with atomic detail. The importance of the arrangement of the polymeric chains in LCs alignment was studied by performing MD simulations of a thin film of a typical nematic LC, 4-cyano-4’-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), in contact with two different polymers: poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) and polystyrene (PS). At least four factors are believed to influence the LC alignment: 1. the interactions of LCs with the backbone vinyl chains; 2. the interactions of LCs with the oriented side groups; 3. the anisotropic interactions of LCs with nanometric grooves; 4. the presence of static surface charges. Here we exclude the effect of microgrooves and of static surface charges from our virtual experiment, by using flat and neutral polymer surfaces, with the aim of isolating the chemical driving factors influencing the alignment of LC phases on polymeric surfaces.

Liquid crystal properties make them useful for the development of security devices in applications of authentication and detection of fakes. Induced orientation of liquid crystal molecules and birefringence are the two main properties used in security devices. Employing liquid crystal and dichroic colorants, we have developed devices that show, with the aid of a polarizer, multiple images on each side of the device. Rubbed polyimide is used as alignment layer on each substrate of the LC cell. By rubbing the polyimide in different directions in each substrate it is possible to create any kind of symbols, drawings or motifs with a greyscale; the more complex the created device is, the more difficult is to fake it. To identify the motifs it is necessary to use polarized light. Depending on whether the polarizer is located in front of the LC cell or behind it, different motifs from one or the other substrate are shown. The effect arises from the dopant colour dye added to the liquid crystal, the induced orientation and the twist structure. In practice, a grazing reflection on a dielectric surface is polarized enough to see the effect. Any LC flat panel display can obviously be used as backlight as well.

Graphene layers have been produced from multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) bulk materials by friction when polished on ground-glass, offering a novel and effective method to produce graphene layers, which, more importantly, could be transferred to other substrates by rubbing. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction confirmed the formation of graphene layers. They were thought to be peeled away from the MWCNT walls due to friction. The reflection spectra showed that absorption of as-produced graphene layers decreased with wavelength in the range of 250–400 nm, compared to the MWCNT bulk material having strong absorption at 350 nm. Nanoscratch test was used to determine the mechanical properties of graphene films, suggesting the tolerance of as-produced graphene film to flaws introduced by scratch.

[EN] During the 1999 nesting season (from June to October), four satellite transmitters were attached to two males and two females of Caretta caretta from Boavista Island (Cape Verde Archipelago, western Africa), where density of nesting females is the highest in the whole archipelago. Transmitters did not work as well as expected, resulting in a low number of locations, possibly due to the neritic behavior of adult loggerheads at reproductive habitat, with the antennae exposed to continuous rubbing. Therefore, we establish a conservative hypothesis about movements of C.caretta in Cape Verde.
