From a Service-Dominant Logic (S-DL) perspective, employees constitute operant resources that firms can draw to enhance the outcomes of innovation efforts. While research acknowledges that frontline employees (FLEs) constitute, through service encounters, a key interface for the transfer of valuable external knowledge into the firm, the range of potential benefits derived from FLE-driven innovation deserves more investigation. Using a sample of knowledge intensive business services firms (KIBS), this study examines how the collaboration with FLEs along the new service development (NSD) process, namely FLE co-creation, impacts on service innovation performance following two routes of different effects. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) results indicate that FLE co-creation benefits the NS success among FLEs and firm’s customers, the constituents of the resources route. FLE co-creation also has a positive effect on the NSD speed, which in turn enhances the NS quality. NSD speed and NS quality integrate the operational route, which proves to be the most effective path to impact the NS market performance. Accordingly, KIBS managers must value their FLEs as essential partners to achieve successful innovation from an internal and external perspective, and develop the appropriate mechanisms to guarantee their effective involvement along the NSD process.

[EN] The presence of the green and Kemp's ridley turtles is rare at Atlantic and Mediterranean Spanish waters, but the records have increased during the last decades. We reported a new set of records and reviewed all the historical observations of these species. The analysis of a mitochondrial DNA fragment of the newest records provided insights about the origin of the individuals. The Kemp's ridley turtles arrived from the western Atlantic nesting beaches, although the discovering of a new haplotype suggested the existence of an unknown or low sampled nesting area of origin.

The Mediterranean Sea is a semi-enclosed basin connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the narrow and shallow Strait of Gibraltar and further subdivided in two different sub-basins, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Mediterranean, connected through the Stait of Sicily. On annual basis, a net heat budget of −7 W/m2, combined with exceeding evaporation over precipation and runoff together with wind stress, is responsible for the antiestuarine character of the zonal thermoaline circulation. The outflow at Gibraltar Strait is mainly composed of Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) and deep water masses formed in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The aim of this thesis is to validate and quantitatively assess the main routes of water masses composing the ouflow at Gibraltar Strait, using for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea a lagrangian interpretation of the eulerian velocity field produced from an eddy-resolving reanalysis dataset, spanning from 2000 to 2012. A lagrangian model named Ariane is used to map out three-dimensional trajectories in order to describe the pathways of water mass transport from the Strait of Sicily, the Gulf of Lyon and the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea to the Gibraltar Strait. Numerical experiments were carried out by seeding millions of particles in the Strait of Gibraltar and following them backwards in time to track the origins of water masses and transport exchanged between the different sections of the Mediterranean. Finally, the main routes of the intermediate and deep water masses are reconstructed from virtual particles trajectories, which highlight the role of the Western Mediterranean Deep Water (WMDW) as the main contributor to the Gibraltar Strait outflow. For the first time, the quantitative description of the flow of water masses coming from the Eastern Mediterranean towards the Gibraltar Strait is provided and a new route that directly links the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea to Gibralatr Strait has been detected.

Angiostrongylus costaricensis intermediate hosts are terrestrial mollusks mostly belonging to the Veronicellidae family. In the present investigation we focused on the mechanisms of larval expulsion from Sarasinula marginata infected with A. costaricensis. Twenty-five mollusks were individually infected with 5000 L1 and sacrificed at 30 min and 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h post-infection and at days 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, and 30 post-infection; the mollusks were then fixed and stained. Diverse organs involved throughout the course of the migratory routes of larvae from oral penetration on were specified and the mechanisms of larval access to the fibromuscular layer through the kidney, rectum, and vascular system were defined. The elimination of L3, derived from oral and/or cutaneous infections, appears to depend on granulomas located close to the excretory ducts of mucous cells.

Chaotic traffic, prevalent in many countries, is marked by a large number of vehicles driving with different speeds without following any predefined speed lanes. Such traffic rules out using any planning algorithm for these vehicles which is based upon the maintenance of speed lanes and lane changes. The absence of speed lanes may imply more bandwidth and easier overtaking in cases where vehicles vary considerably in both their size and speed. Inspired by the performance of artificial potential fields in the planning of mobile robots, we propose here lateral potentials as measures to enable vehicles to decide about their lateral positions on the road. Each vehicle is subjected to a potential from obstacles and vehicles in front, road boundaries, obstacles and vehicles to the side and higher speed vehicles to the rear. All these potentials are lateral and only govern steering the vehicle. A speed control mechanism is also used for longitudinal control of vehicle. The proposed system is shown to perform well for obstacle avoidance, vehicle following and overtaking behaviors.

The time and the distance traveled during the acceleration and the velocity retaking are parameters used for the comparison and the project of vehicles. In this paper equations for the calculation of those parameters are presented. Several criteria are presented for the shift gears. It is also verified the occurrence or not of total slip during the acceleration of the vehicle. The theoretical models were implemented in a developed computational system. Such system was applied in a Mercedes-Benz do Brazil sample vehicle, in order to facilitate comparisons between the simulate values and the experimental road tests. The yolk protein precursor, vitellogenin (Vg), in bees is synthesized in the fat body trophocytes, delivered to the hemolymph and ultimately absorbed from there during the vitellogenic phase of oocytes in the active ovary. The routes tracing the material exchange that occurs between the trophocytes and the hemolymph, in addition to the transportation from the hemolymph to the ovarian follicles, were marked by alkaline phosphatase and lanthanum nitrate (LN). Active ovaries from nurse workers and physogastric queens, as well as inactive ovaries of virgin queens, were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The LN permitted better visualization of the routes of exchanges between the organs and the hemolymph. Both methods demonstrate the apparent differences between the phases of the ovary and the bee caste. In inactive ovaries of the virgin queens, the routes from the follicular epithelium to the oocyte remain closed; conversely, they are open in active ovaries of the nurse workers and physogastric queens. The differences between the methods and classes of bees are discussed. © The Author 2013. Published by Oxford University Press [on behalf of The Japanese Society of Microscopy]. All rights reserved.

This dissertation document deals with the development of a project, over a span of more than two years, carried out within the scope of the Arrowhead Framework and which bears my personal contribution in several sections. The final part of the project took place during a visiting period at the university of Luleå. The Arrowhead Project is an European project, belonging to the ARTEMIS association, which aims to foster new technologies and unify the access to them into an unique framework. Such technologies include the Internet of Things phe- nomenon, Smart Houses, Electrical Mobility and renewable energy production. An application is considered compliant with such framework when it respects the Service Oriented Architecture paradigm and it is able to interact with a set of defined components called Arrowhead Core Services. My personal contribution to this project is given by the development of several user-friendly API, published in the project's main repository, and the integration of a legacy system within the Arrowhead Framework. The implementation of this legacy system was initiated by me in 2012 and, after many improvements carried out by several developers in UniBO, it has been again significantly modified this year in order to achieve compatibility. The system consists of a simulation of an urban scenario where a certain amount of electrical vehicles are traveling along their specified routes. The vehicles are con-suming their battery and, thus, need to recharge at the charging stations. The electrical vehicles need to use a reservation mechanism to be able to recharge and avoid waiting lines, due to the long recharge process. The integration with the above mentioned framework consists in the publication of the services that the system provides to the end users through the instantiation of several Arrowhead Service Producers, together with a demo Arrowhead- compliant client application able to consume such services.

To meet the requirements for rapid tumor growth, a complex array of non-neoplastic vascular, fibroblastic, and immune cells are recruited to the tumor microenvironment. Understanding the origin, composition, and mechanism(s) for recruitment of these stromal components will help identify areas for therapeutic intervention. Previous findings have suggested that ex-vivo expanded bone marrow-derived MSC home to the sites of tumor development, responding to inflammatory signals and can serve as effective drug delivery vehicles. Therefore, we first sought to fully assess conditions under which MSC migrate to and incorporate into inflammatory microenvironments and the consequences of modulated inflammation. MSC delivered to animals bearing inflammatory insults were monitored by bioluminescence imaging and displayed specific tropism and selective incorporation into all tumor and wound sites. These findings were consistent across routes of tumor establishment, MSC administration, and immunocompetence. MSC were then used as drug delivery vehicles, transporting Interferon β to sites of pancreatic tumors. This therapy was effective at inhibiting pancreatic tumor growth under homeostatic conditions, but inhibition was lost when inflammation was decreased with CDDO-Me combination treatment. Next, to examine the endogenous tumor microenvironment, a series of tissue transplant experiments were carried out in which tissues were genetically labeled and engrafted in recipients prior to tumor establishment. Tumors were then analyzed for markers of tumor associated fibroblasts (TAF): α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), nerve glia antigen 2 (NG2), fibroblast activation protein (FAP), and fibroblast specific protein (FSP) as well as endothelial marker CD31 and macrophage marker F4/80. We determined the majority of α-SMA+, NG2+ and CD31+ cells were non-bone marrow derived, while most FAP+, FSP+, and F4/80+ cells were recruited from the bone marrow. In accord, transplants of prospectively isolated BM MSC prior to tumor development indicated that these cells were recruited to the tumor microenvironment and co-expressed FAP and FSP. In contrast, fat transplant experiments revealed recruited fat derived cells co-expressed α-SMA, NG2, and CD31. These results indicate TAF are a heterogeneous population composed of subpopulations with distinct tissues of origin. These models have provided a platform upon which further investigation into tumor microenvironment composition and tests for candidate drugs can be performed. ^
